Concept: Avrisaurus Groenlandis
Avrisaurus Groenlandis (Ground Reptile from Greenland) was absolutely unique dinosaur. He was discovered in northern Greenland in 2008. It is true that at the north and south pole was warmer than today, so in summer plants, even some trees could appear in that areas, but the arctic winter was very cold and snowy. Evolution gave to Avrisaurus special tool, its upper limbs was adapted to be used like shovels. Creature could dig to find plants and theirs roots under snow or ground. Animal has got two big ventricles in its cheeks, scientists suppose that dinosaur could store up like hamsters. Paleontologists analised the construction of tail and announced that creature was able to accumulate fat in it, preparing itseld before the arctic winter. The last interesting thing was the sail-like structure on animals back. It was probably used to attract females. Avrisaurus Groenlandis was an amazing creature, perfectly adapted for the polar climat nad low temperatures.

Concept: [*COLOR=White]Bearded Snow Titan[/color]
[/b]
The Snow Titan is a snuggly, squishy pile of love in the shape of an immense white carnivore. Evolution has removed its forelegs entirely. It draws heat through crude solar plates along its neck and back that spread heat via its blood vessels to its extremities. Large portions of its underside are covered in thick black hair. A ridge of spikes above and below its eyes shield its vision from arctic glare. A mystery to scientists is how it manages to grow to over 200 tons in an environment that doesn't provide enough food for a creature half its size. Another mystery is how it got so adorable.

Concept: Niviraptor
Speculated by many scientists as an off-shoot of the Oviraptor, the Niviraptor has evolved to survive in the harsh and bleak climate of the Antarctic. To combat heat loss, the Niviraptor has grown to a size that rivals that of polar bears and walruses, as well as developing a large fatty deposit on its back, much like a camel. Still retaining its egg-theft ancestry, the Niviraptor is known to eat penguin eggs and penguins.

Global warming doesn't kill polarbears. This thing does! Reports of a "Yeti Godzilla" living in Antarctica are old, but it's only recently that the scientific comunity sent Pierre Lafourche to investigate if the rumours are true and maybe photograph the beast and find out if it has a polarbears on the menu: "Ze rumors, zey are true! I have fotografiated ze beast and also found out it has polarbears on ze menu."

Concept: the arctic apatasaurus
the AA is the largest known dinosaur to inhabit the arctic. its sheer size and forest of hair help it survive the turbulent and harsh conditions. its hair is much like the hair of the polar bear, which traps heat exceptionally well. the spikes on its back are actually extensions of its spine, and are helpful in warding off predators. it feeds by dipping its head into the chilly water and gathering up tons of krill and shrimp, much like a whale. :yum:

Concept: Omethius

Omethius is said to have horns of black ice and breath that stinks of freeze burnt flesh. Tribes say that the stink of the beast is something coughed fourth from hell itself. It is said if it is smelled once, leaves the victim a lifetime of nightmares and vile hallucinations, slowly leading the sufferer down a path of insanity from which they never return.
Most who fall prey to this fate, end up disappearing from their villages. It is rumored that their mind dies as they slowly fall under control of the beast. Eventually leaving their homes an empty husk of their former self, on a path that always leads north, to where the ancient beast is always feeding.

Concept: Ice Raptor
The only known predatory Dinosaur to have roamed the wastelands of ice in the arctic, the Ice Raptor is a creature built for its environment.
Everything from its black scales and solar sails to retain the sun's heat, to its thick hide, rugged furry coat, and double talons on each claw allow this lone wolf species to survive in an environment where many cannot.
With its awesome eyesight, and an excited leap, this raptor spots lunch waiting in the depths of an icy pool, and pursues its favorite meal, fish. As an added bonus to its evolutionary survival in this unforgiving and most dangerous terrain, this rare and cunning predator has developed a finned tail, allowing it to swim as fast as its prey.

Concept: Smithosaur

Discovered by Professor Smith. The Smithosaur is the only Dinosaur and perhaps reptile to have ever been found in the Arctic. People first thought that the remains of this creature happened to arrive in the Arcitic via a slow moving glacier, however research found that the Smithosaur's diet consists of the local animals found in the Arctic, such as penguins (ancient penguins).
In order to survive in this harsh climate the Smithosaurs body is covered with blubber. A trait normally found with marine mammals. This creature is however very slow, conserving as much energy as possible.

Concept: Glacieplanusaurus

Known to be the only dinosaur that lived exclusively on the ice plains of the arctic the Glacieplanusaurus is said to be the only dinosaur that completely resorted to cannibalism as there were no other animals of the size to serve as food. Especially the males lived almost their whole life without any social contact except for the very short time of mating season. Palaeontologists have to rely on a very small number of discovered bones to prove their theories but they say that wounds and scratches found on said bones that could only go back on other glacieplanusaurus' horns imply this as the reason why it was extinct this early in history already.
with their tiny legs resting no longer that 20 minutes at a stretch to lose no temperature and their big bulgy bodies keeping organs warm enough they were equiped to spent a life in this cold climate.

Concept: Nivaceratops Ansonni
The ancestors of the North-American snow trike ( Nivaceratops Ansonni ) were of the few dinosaurs that managed to survive the major extinction. They travel in herds of 20 to 30 and feed on lichens and graminaes. They use their horns to probe the snow and uncover their meal. They have a fleshy overgrowth on the nose that warms the air before it penetrates the lungs. When threatened, by a polar bear or another arctic predator, the herd forms a circle around its youngs, creating a jungle of horns and feet wich is practically unbreakable. Fur on the trike’s back is in fact composed of protofeathers that evolved into long insulating fibers during the ice age. Quills on its tail are not poisonous, as opposed to the ones of their ancestors. They are only used for display in the mating season, a period in wich they become drained in blood.

(P.S. it was never proven that ceratopsids possessed quills. It has only been found on primitive ceratopsians. This is my own interpretation. )

Concept:Polar Diplodocus

Description:
The Polar Diplodocus has, over the millennia, adapted its jaw to a horizonal position. This female's head usually waits in the water for the fish to enter its mouth. The heat produced by the warm-blooded dinosaur attracts the fish - and because of the cold, this diplodocus can store her captured meals in or above the freezing ice.

It does take a while for the near-frozen creature to capture any food, though - movement takes away heat. Thankfully, her huge body mass retains heat in and underneath the creature even in the thickest of winters.

Concept: Niphraxis /greek: snow-armour/
Niphraxis sports an odd combination of armour and tall legs. Both were adaptions to the artic climate in which it lived. The tall legs lifted the body out of contact from the snow-covered land, and the armour minimized the number of blood vessels exposed to the chilly air. Its head was also perfectly shaped to plow through even the deepest snow drifts when needed.

This Prehistoric beast was believe to be the great great ancestor of whales, particularly the Killer Whales. He would live on land but float in the oceans for food. His belly is white and underwater creatures often would mistake him for a giant glacier, giving him great camoflage. Meanwhile his back is black allowing him to absorb heat from the sun. He is able to keep warm during the coldest weather because of he can store massive amounts of blubber and the ability to hibernate during sunless months.

The male with its softer and fatter body guards the egg and keeps it warm in a dark cave the female hunts for food and protects the family from those that might prey on the weeker male and egg. The female is larger stronger for hunting and fishing and more brightly colored to scare hunters away from the male. He is smaller with more blubber to warm the egg and his coloring is darker and less saturated to better hide in the icey cave.

C.O.W 121 Arctic Dinosaur (Ixnaski Shoanasuar) Aka: Terrible
-Snow runner

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v668/SpiderofLeng/Arctc_Dnsr_020.jpg

The terrible snow runners were a virtually unknown arctic Dinosaur. The only stories of these voracious hunters were told by the ancient Inuit peoples that had discovered fossil remains
of these beasts in the high arctic glacier plains. It was theorized by scientists that due to the cold environment of the reptiles, that their eating habits and metabolism must have been hyper-active to say the least. Due to their snowshoe like feet, they were quite mobile in the the snow drifted surroundings. It is also theorized that due to their constant movement
and frequent diet of high blubber content, that the reptiles staved off the freezing effects of the cold by never slowing down long enough for ice to form on their skins. The Reptiles
had quite keen eyesight through slit like eyes. The shape of their eyes actually prevented glare and snow blindness, while most of their pray would lie motionless and blind in snow storms, the Ixnasi would run circles around the packs of seals slaughtering and feasting. It is also believed that even to this day the shape of their eyes had influenced the Inuit hunts men's eye goggles.

It was pretty hard to choose, but I voted for Timmy the Turtle. I love the dynamism of it’s piece, and the overall design of the dinosaur stunned me right at the beginning. And I have only one more word to say : poor polar bear!

Thalion : I love the way you digipaint. Your background is awesome ( and the creature too of course!) I’d love to learn how you do those kind of texturing.

Mr. Man : Pretty sweet! I think it looks like old school dinosaur drawings.

Monotony : I must say that I was intrigued by your creature since your first w.i.p. and was not sure i'd like it, but finally I do. Those tiny legs contrasting with the bulking body, that's not a bad idea after all! That's even pretty cool!

Eloth : I really like your piece! I find it ice-age-esque ( reminds me of the ice age 3 preview!) The dinosaur design is pretty cool!

Orion 9282 : Beautiful piece! This creature seems full of wisdom and reminds me of a great sage. I like your composition too.

Anthis: I find cool that you invented a dinosaur that doesn’t look much like one we already know while keeping dinosaurian characteristics at the same time. That’s great.

Spiralfish: I just love your design, but this creature reminds me more of a mammal than of a dinosaur. But apart from this, you do the kind of creature design that I like. Your lines are simple, but beautiful.

Aedant.

I love the attention to known dinosaur facts, and it's weird how few artists in this round seemed to take temperature into consideration! A human figure for size would have been nice though, to give it more of a dino-exhibit feel.

Your yak social reference was not missed, plus I love the pic!

Also, Dr Midnight? Your dino does look very cuddly! Probably the one I'd most like to see sold as a plushie.

Mitze, your arctic dinosaur seemed most believable to me - they look like they really, really belonged in the arctic, which is hard to imagine for a dinosaur. Well done.

I made it more of a scene than a creature design, I wasn't too happy with it in the end. My concept was perhaps too hard for my skill at the moment. I gotta lot of work to do on my digital art.

My vote went to Antne, for the overall cuteness and weirdness of the piece :D Tough pick though..
Thalion's was the most convincing, National Geographish.
Aedant's was really cool too (love the whole bizon + triceratops thing going on there :D)
Spiralfish's has an awesome concept, it's too bad the creature ain't put in a composition, it would have kicked ass seing that thing slice the ice with that horn thing and eat an orca or somethin' :D

Wow, what a difficult choice!

After much thinking I have decided to vote for Thalion. This entry has a nice charm to it. It's a believable concept for a start and I like how the Dinos are placed within the environment.
I have to admit Im not too keen on all of these furry Dinos. It seems like too much of an obvious solution to go for.

Mind that I'm no pro, so here are just some thoughts and crits. I hope they are useful.

Xezor1324 ; It's nice that you've thought about different methods for keeping your creature warm, even though I don't see how it would work :). I like the effect on the snow, I tried to get my snow to look dynamic too, but couldn't figure out how. Looks like his tail is missing though. Also, starting with good anatomy will really help you to build up your creature later on.

Thalion ; Like the style of your work. I also enjoy how you paid attention to the environment, as it also makes your creature more believable. Your dinosaur seems well-suited for an arctic environment. My only crit is he looks a little stiff, as if he's just posing and not actually moving. Perhaps because all creatures are side-viewed.

Dr Midnight ; I like your composition with the fisher in the front. Adds a nice dramatic effect and some sense of scale. Scale looks a little off though, perhaps the person should be smaller. Or he's standing too close to your horizon. Also you left a big blue spot on the bottom left. Your creature isnt very detailed, perhaps the problem of him standing so far away.

Gorgonzola ; Fun to see a brightly coloured creature. Quite original, since most of the entries are very gray or white. Nice you picked a dynamic pose too, although perhaps the area where his front legs and neck meet seems a little odd. I think your creature is placed too far to the left though, composition-wise. Shame you didn't get to finish it, seems you left some linework.

Timmy the Turtle ; Nice action shot, very dynamic. Think the bear is the best part. I think its a shame we can't really see most of the creatures body. Not sure if you intentionally blurred it for the movement effect. Its.. alot of fur. Or perhaps you didn't finish it yet.

Paul Kang ; I like the way you've rendered your creature. He really fits into a harsh environment. He looks wild and rugged. I don't quite like the color of your piece but that might be a matter of taste. Think having a little more color would add some contrast and would make it more attractive to look at.

ArtZealot ; Of all entries, I like your execution most. Love your technique. Nice job on the surroundings too. Think you could have done more on the concept though. Somehow it still feels like a 'normal' triceratops, arctic-styled.

Kasen Kato ; You've achieved a nice and harsh look. Really looks like a tough arctic creature. Scars, ice, everything. Think you could have gotten an more interesting concept though, he looks a bit like a restyled, regular dino.

scorge ; I always enjoy your renderings and this is no exception. Think the sail(s) on its back stand out. Nice job on the concept too, you really added some interesting elements. Somehow I can't help but to think he looks a little flat in some areas. Not sure how come. Perhaps its too much of a side-view. Or it could be some of the tangent points (tail touching the left border, left-back leg touching the water's edge, front-left legs' nails lining up with the ice). Hope you see what I mean.

Mr Man ; Fun colors, and like the blubber. As a concept, I think its a shame there's little besides the blubber though. I think your creature is adorable.. in a way. Until I saw the people you put there for scaling.

monotony ; Crazy creature. Some nice out of the box thinking. It also seems like no cold could ever harm it. Also like the added light in the sky (forgot english name). Crits: ground looks a little rushed, and those really small legs are a little odd for such a large creature.

Quinn Simoes ; What a nasty sight. The way you put the seal there, as if dragged into the cave, really adds to the mood. Think your creature's "character" is very strong. He's more of a monster than a dinosaur perhaps, though. Small crits; think you should have added an outline of his tail in the back. I'm also losing some sense of depth/perspective on its head, if you know what I mean. Not sure if those horns are standing straight up, for example. Off topic; I like the 'border' of your piece, and the font you used. Clean.

Aedant ; Although perhaps it looks like dinosaurs we know, I think you've added quite alot to set it apart as a different creature. Great job on the fur btw, and nice rendering overall. Believable anatomy too. However, because you rendered everything extensively (and equally), I think its missing some sense of depth.

Eloth ; Nice action. Your dinosaur has a nice crazed, raging look about it. It looks hungry. Like the subtle rendering on its skin. Perhaps your dinosaur looks much like the dino's we know, which is my only crit really.

CamSyko ; Like what you did on the snow and bg. Your creature seems stocky, but also quite immobile. As if he is cold himself.

Orion9282 ; You gave your own twist to the dinosaur, which is nice. I like the smooth fur too. Some of the shapes are a little hard to make out though. He seems to disappear into your background a little. Loads of shadow, snow, and hair are hiding the creature. I like the snow blown around.

Relic ; Nice to see you took a somewhat penguin-ish approach too. The polar bears work well for scaling. I think your creature is a little too smooth and stiff. You can't really see whether its muscled, or has alot of blubber. Perhaps its missing some form.

Sir Bret ; You gave a nice twist to the diplodocus. I also like how its packed with snow and ice. Perhaps you could have added more anatomy, the stiff legs and flat stomach make it look a little like a table.

os2008 ; I like the style of your piece, I think you did a nice job on achieving a harsh, gritty look. Perhaps its a little too much in some areas. I assume the chunks of ice in the air are being thrown away, but it looks like they are floating. I like how your dinosaur looks, but I think its too much a regular dinosaur with added ice.

Mitze ; Convincing arctic creature. Stylish environment too. You'd expect some more footsteps around, probably. Also, perhaps the shadows in the snow are off. With a light source in the back, you wouldn't expect the tails shadow in the snow. Very stylish piece.

Spiralfish ; I like how you went for a real original creature, rather than a dinosaur with an arctic makeover. Shame its sketchy. Not that I don't like it as a sketch, but you'd want to know how the creature looks closeby, what its skin looks like, how it survives its environment.

chrislomaka ; Looks like a tough creature. Nice take on the long legs. He still looks a little skinny for living in the arctics though :). The snow texture looks a lot like the skin texture.

Rizza ; I like the smooth, almost oily skin. I like how you shaded that. Perhaps your creature looks a bit too much like the dinosaurs we know.

Antne ; I think your creature has a great deal of character. It has a nice, somewhat bird-like appearance. I really enjoy your rendering too. You can clearly see which parts are scaled, feathered, or blubber. Original creature, but clearly dinosaur. I think the male's neck area has lost some of its shape where he turns his head. Same with the female, the head is just.. turned around. Thats the only crit I can find though. Nice job.

Azathoth ; I like how your solutions for living in the arctics (the slitted eyes, feet). Although he's perhaps a little skinny. The slitted eyes, and the mout almost makes it look like he's smiling, which is a lot less menacing. Perhaps a shadow, or footsteps would help really placing him in his environment.

Not sure about my vote yet, quite a few favorites. I really enjoy the visual appearance on some pieces, and some interesting concepts too.

Man, there were soo many great entries, wish we could vote for more than one. But anyways these were my favorites,
Thalion loved your description of how your dino could survive in colder climates. The background was amazing and your picture looked very professional like other illustrators who do these kinds of things.
Timmy The Turtle Really loved the face of your dino and that adorable polar bear and would've voted on it if I had seen more details in the body, you can of lose it towards his hind legs and tail. Also great description
Anthis Really cool design, very original and fun. I love their fierce birdlike appearance when combined with triceratops features. Kind of looks like samurai armor too.
SpiralFish Another cool and original design, didn't stick with the typical looks of a dinosaur but still kept the feel that it was one.
I ended up voting on Antne's picture because i loved the look of the dino and how he added a look into it's personal life such as difference's between male and female. Also loved his color and detail and the dinos and the background, feel like I can really see their personalities. The only thing I didn't like but don't mind was the person but it works well with him there.

Really nice entries!

I voted for Timmy the Turtle, very nice rendering and sense of action.

os2008's and Mitze's entries really stood out for me as well.

Gotta keep this short as I'm at work, but:

Xezor1324 - i love the glowy spikes.

Thalion - my #2 pic. awesome everything. My only nitpick is that it seems awkard having hooves held up like that.

Dr Midnight - nice mix of cute and scary:)

Gorgonzola - nice work. I like the coloration, but I think the orange might be pushing it just a bit for living in a blue-white landscape.

Timmy the Turtle - Strangely, I think my favorite part is the polar bear! Nice lines and action here.

Paul Kang - Nice choice w. the sunset. I think you could push the shadows and contrast a bit more, though.

ArtZealot - Nice scene and composition. (though that line of dinos are herbivores ;) )

Kasen Kato - Nice battle scars - something I don't see enough of! I think some texturing would really add a lot to this piece.

scorge - I like the attention to details like the added long claw on the foot.

Mr Man - He's soo cute! Kinda like an overgrown iguana.

monotony - I love the pose (except for the curly tail). It's hard to balance large body / thin legs (i was trying to figure that out myself)- I think I would have liked thick legs on this guy better.

Quinn Simoes - Scarrrrry!

Aedant - Wonderful design and simply stunning in b/w! Got my vote.

Eloth - Awesome pose. Are the ice spike on him a part of him or the snow that has collected?

CamSyko - I'm sure his cuteness helps him survive, too! Is it me or does it also look part gorilla, too?

Orion9282 - Cool look.

Relic - News flash- penguin(dino) eats bear! heh. I actually thought the front fins were actually feathers... Maybe add a little webbing?

Sir Bret - Cool pose. Fore some reason I kept thinking i was looking into a cave before I actually saw it.

Anthis - Nice design. I like how you added armour to the thighs. (i was trying to figure that out myself)

os2008 - awesome pic - nice composition, movement, scale!

Mitze - This scene reminds me of something from a dino book. Great job illustrating not only the dino as a species and including their way of life. I'm not sure how a horn on the top of the head would be usefull for breaking through ice, though...

Spiralfish - I love the head design, though it suggests something more aquatic, though.

Rizza - Neat concept.

Antne - Nice use of colors here.

Azathoth - This guy looks like he's in a children's book (in a good way - i like the style)

Tons of awesome art here all!!!

Timmy the Turtle: my close second, if only i get to see more of how the creature propel itself so fast!

Aedant: another close second for me, like the rendering a lot, the creature feels alive and breathing for me

Orion9282 great rendering, the creature feels very much at home in the arctic, just didnt came across more as a dino for me, then again that's probably my preconception

os2008my vote, very similar to eloth's take, but somehow the rendering and ambiance works for me, guess i will have to grow out of the t-rex thing....

Spiralfish interesting creature, almost shark-like, seal-like skin to conserve energy while swimming across iceberg? would be great to see more of its head!

Nice entries all around. My vote goes to Ante,Nice rendering and concept. Scourge a close second. Timmy nice one thought the bear was nice but was a little let down by the blurred camera shot idea, not much of a body or rendering
besides the head.

Thanks for the critiques guys. They made me laugh. Yeah the design of my creature was a bit of a joke cos there's no way he could survive. He's too big to survive on plants, and is too slow to catch anything hehe. But is stocky to stay warm.

Voted for monotony at the end...nice design, readable and neat.

Just couldn't see Timmy The Turtle's creatures whole body, otherwise i would have voted for you.

There isn't a single entry here that doesn't kick ass, but my vote has to go to Quinn Simoes. The way you portrayed the creature as a scavenger is spot on, down to the colors, skin textures and pose.

I also really dig the bg and fonts. Great job!

Timmy The Turtle- I like the intensity and idea of abomidable Godzilla. The polar bear was a nice touch and gave it some scale.

I voted for monotony, i liked the design, the contrasting proportions in the body and the details in the face.
