View Full Version : alchohol and art?

k, so i was just curious. Have any of you ever thought that ideas and inspirations come to you more easily under the influence, or otherwise?

Edited: i'm talking about creating ideas, and not creating art. trying to create art while under the influence is insanity unless you have a lot of self-control/hand eye coordination/awesomness. so i left out that part of the question.

*NOTE I DO NOT CONDONE NOR ENCOURAGE THE USE OF SUCH THINGS IN ANY WAY OR FASHION*

anyway, just curious.

POST!!!! XD

No. It makes it hard to concentrate, can't organize thoughts, can't hit shapes worth shit.

Talk about a weird question. No, alcohol doesn't have the 'mind altering' effects or at least not in any consumable quantity that would leave you functional and not pissing yourself on the ground.

Same as everyone else, i can't concentrate hard enough to draw when drinking.

I sketch better when drunk. As for ideas, maybe, but I'm usually too lazy to write them down.

In my past experiences of expirimentation I can say that being high caused me to get obsessed with patterns. My friend had one of those persian rugs and I got entirely entranced by it, copying the details in my sketchbook, and had some weird idea there was something very spiritual about the pattern that I had to unlock that would give me a glimpse into the meaning of life.

I dont think I've ever even wanted to draw while drunk haha, when i do it comes out horrible :(

I've always wanted experiment with drawing while intoxicated.
Never got around to it, though, and it's not I'm gonna bust out my sketchbook in the middle of a party.

I used to think my ideas were genius when I thought of them under the influence. Then the next day, I realized they were stupid, stupid stupid.

I did draw someones portrait once at a party when I was drunk. And suprisingly it came out good. But besides that, no luck. :(

I once swore i would drink and draw, never happened.

but on the occasions that i have tried to do so, i end up forgetting vital things... like "armour has to have something in it."

ideas? im a mean drunk, so nothing positive.

personally ive never tried it before, when in drunk the object that is removed the furthest away from me is a pencil :)

But a friend of me once was tipsy in class and then he drew this awesome cool robot, normally he cant draw that good. But he is kinda a hippie so maybe that has something to do with it :p

to be honest i think it works rather well. ok, you lack a lot of precision when you draw while drunk....but on the other hand you stop thinking about what you are doing. your drawings become much more loose and subconcious. i don't think that it helps to come up with ideas....because alcohol kills every kind of creativity......but try for example to draw your souroundings while being wasted......your mental state/perception is completely different and the result will also be :sungod:

I know a lot of 'hippies' who are pretty good artists, you'l get further drawing baked than drunk

My brain barely functions on it. I'll have a blast, but no inspiration... ever. The next day during the hangover I can't function at all, and generally need to avoid other people ... I'd say i get a lot less accomplished when I drink. A lot less.

At college a few mates and myself used to pitch our ideas for films in the pub and flesh them out.

I think it helps that it was a more relaxed setting and the alcohol helped relax our thought process. I don't think inspiration comes more easily it just that you try and brainstorm and force ideas it feels like hard work when you are pub half pissed and come up with an idea it feels like you didn't have to work at it all.

your environment and current emotional state will always affect or have some say in the ideas you create.

I don't think it's a good idea to draw or paint while under the influence. I knew a certain artist that used to smoke up as a crutch to get his creativity going, and he developed an unwanted crutch. Definitely not a good thing, as you don't want to get high every time before you draw or paint.

Drunk no, but I have a real problem with anger and patience when I'm drawing. Having a beer can loosen me up and improve my mood without impacting the quality of my art.

I get alot more done when im drinking a couple of beers, im more loose more relaxed and have more fun.

but im talking 2 or 3 beers while drawing, not being wasted then starting to draw, though i've done that too, and my drawings were so much cleaner its like i want this line ok now this line, rather than i think i want this line or maybe this or maybe this, 20 featherd lines later move onto next line. if you know what i mean, natural line economy.

sometimes , I drink a beer or two...or take a sip of that mysterious booze one of my buddies brought me from serbia. But only on rare occasions to loosen up a bit. I tend to kill myself more with strong tea and cigarettes.

Although I did some experiments. But it all never really worked out. When I am drunk I tend to be eather tired , in a "singing jerk" mood or try to get laid.

Thank god it is very rare that I ever drink enough to become a real idiot...

well i learned something about my culture with alcohol. You drink; You work.
It's not you drink and go to sleep. If i was over there and i drank...man i'm gonna draw my ass off even if i want to sleep instead of working.

Alcohol and art for me doesn't go well, but for video game....hehee thats something else...

Alcohol is a depressent, so I can't imagine it would be much of an aid to creativity. On the other hand, alcohol does lower inhibitions, so that could be a good thing for creativity. Still, I can't remember ever producing anything worthwhile after a two hour lunch spent in the bar, regardless of how uninhibited I became.

Alex Chow

I probably have the least tolerance for alcohol. The one time I drank even a little bit, I became wobbly (swore myself off it after). I just can't see myself coordinating my body to draw if I drink more.

Dusty

Alcohol is bad for the artist, imo.
I speak as someone who loves drinking, btw, haha...

But I have recently stopped drinking because I found that one night of drinking (which is normal) would turn into several days of not doing art. For example, first night I obviously wouldn't draw. The day after, I wouldn't draw either because I would be hung over and definitely didn't feel like drawing. Then sometimes on the 3rd day, it would obviously be totally out of my system, but the lack of motivation and laziness would still be present.

So I felt 3 days of doing no art whatsoever (generally a weekend) is counterproductive to my career. Drinking is fun, for sure, but it's a complete waste of time and money to do regularly if you have goals with your art.

I pretty much keep the drinking to special occasions right now, and I think it works out well.

I'm not really interested in drinking in general. It certainly doesn't help me produce any ideas. But, being a little tipsy is fun. No more than that thank you.

Shouldn't this be a discussion on how Marijuana produces ideas?

I agree with dusty. drinking in moderation is a good thing, and too much can make a negative impact on the career befcause of the aforementioned reasons.
But as for me, drinking helps ideas come outt for me. I havea slightly chaotic thought-process, and drinking slows it down a bit, so that i make more connections, ideas, inspirations, questions and answers. Drawing while drunk is not really a possibility for me though, so i tend to write a lot. (in my journal, on a napkin, record stuff on my phone, and occasionally a rough sketch of what i was t hinking about at the time so that i had a better chance of making that connection again.

and for all of you " man i had a headache the next day" peoeple, a hangover is due to dehydration, fyi. I have three rules when drinking:
1. never go to sleep when the room is spinning.
2. if the room is spinning enough to greatly affect your motor skills, MAKE YOURSELF THOW UP. Believe me, voluntarily throwing up is MUCH more preferable to involuntary spewing.
3. After you start sobering up, switch to water. beffore you go to bed, chug a glass of water, and time some vitamins if you want. If you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, drink at least a half glass of water each time (if more than once)

you should wake up headache free, au natural style.

For 2 days I tried painting something and it kept turning out crap, so later that 2nd day I had a few pints, just to relax a bit, re-attempted it again, and I got what I wanted in just half an hour. I've also been to life drawing class after a few pints and never had any problems what-so-ever. Being tipsy seems to work wonders.

From what I know though, this guy makes absurd cartoon under influence of alcohol any time he draws one. But since he had a delerium, he quitted drinking during drawing. Would'nt surprise me or this is false by now. Well, that's what you get I guess...

I've found that if I'm having one really bad day - some alcohol will take the edge off of it so that I can get some fluid ideas down without aggravating myself half to death onthe picture - and sometimes those pieces turn into something. One of my favorite personal paintings was done while mildly intoxicated (Mildlly being a possible understatment - I had problems walking across my room). At the same time, usually it just makes me fall asleep faster.

So it can go either way for me.

I dislike being drunk though, at that point nothing artistic is going to come out of me.

Love all the comments so far!

Though one thing i really feel like pointing out is this:
Artists thrive on creativity. We all know this. Creativity requires an unbiased, open mind, so those of you who are condemning this, are RETARDED.

Unnless, that is, that you have already tired it. And then, u completely have your say in this conversation.

I had a Muslim friend who drank beer. Then again, I have many Christian friends who think alcohol is evil and wouldn't touch a drop. Whatever...it's a personal opinion.

Anyway, here is an interesting article I found on absinthe (http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/080429-absinthe-effects.html). Apparently, it was probably not alcohol or other ingredients in absinthe that influenced artists like Van Gogh who attributed their creativity to the absinthe drink, but maybe it was the opium that was mixed in the drink.

Drinking's a personal call. I could care less how much another person drinks until it affects me. And if one wants to drink until they're royally messed up- then they got to suffer the heaves for it. Puke all you want. Puke on me and then we'll have issues.

I seem to get a lot of brilliant ideas when I'm kind of out of it, like slightly drunk or falling asleep. Problem is if I get up and write the idea down, when I'm fully awake the next day I'll find my wonderful ideas to be complete crap...

I tried to do an experiment with drink-drawing with my friend a while ago, but we just passed out instead of really drawing anything.

I actually draw a lot better when I've been drinking the night before. Not when I'm properly hungover, but just really tired and out of it. It forces me to slow down and really concentrate.

I come up with a lot of ideas when I'm drinking, but either they don't work when I try them in the morning or I forget them.

I think your state of mind is more important, rather than whether you're on any particular drug. Sometimes alcohol relaxes people and that is a good thing with art, to be relaxed. But it also impairs your decision making which is why drink driving is so dangerous, you think you're doing alot better than you actually are. I dunno about other drugs but I wouldn't ever want to think that my creativity hinges on being under the influence of any drug.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Laudanum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laudanum)...?

I don't know anything about Van Gogh ever using it though, I'm guessing he was just a creative person who enjoyed getting drunk a lot :P

VulgarDragon

Yeah, could be. Laudanum was widely used in that time and easily obtained. Opium and their derivatives are very powerful hallucinogens. I had surgery once and the doctor prescribed me some codeine to help with the pain. While on it, I was having a lot of very vivid thoughts and dreams, in lurid and terrifying details. Some of it was bloody and hellish. It scared the shit out of me and I quit taking it...I would rather handle the pain than that. I don't recommend taking drugs like that for any reason.

You know, i've personally concluded that "bad trips" or whatnot related to your situation are a product of subconscious stuff. I'm not saying you hallucinated that u killed people therefore are thinking about killing people, but more like a nightmare scenario, all junked up with stress, worries, anger resentment, etc, etc. So i dont think that it would be like that all the time. But then, i've never had anything powerful enough to elicit a hallucination or otherwise. I wish though. I have some CRAZY ASS DREAMS so i think hallucinations with be effing awesome. unfortunately, if it were that awesome, i would likely become addicted to it for the sheer question " I wonder what i'll see next"
LOL
