Love those environments. I especially like the wet, misty feel of the environment for the first one.
What are these for?

benjamin-the-fox - thanks, the environments are for some award show cinematics mostly. The two dark gritty ones are kinda hard 2 explain...they were three of them that were suppose to be used for some advertisment...
the cat burglar character and 3 other characters (the one with sherlock holmes, swashbuckler, and british officer) were for 2 different game companies.
And the other characters were for redesigning some older originally 2D charcacters for an older animation for 3D
Science Fiction Fan- Thanks that's very kind of you 2 say
Matinian - If it was a good opportunity, I would consider it. I have been jumping around quite a bit, so it could be exciting! Thanks for thinking of me!
Surion- Thank a lot. Character were fun 2 do....hope to do some more realisitc ones soon.

Clang!
If I had an iron jaw, that would be the sound of it hitting the floor. Those environment pic are, for lack of a better phrase, freaking sweet. Mad talent. The character progress sketches are great, and the finished pieces are well done, Im just not a fan of those kind of designs. Very well done.

nice environments... The top few are my favorites! i would watch for some perspective errors... particularly with that bridge in the top image, its a bit skewed...

Very, very nice. But I have to say, your pencils are better then your paintings.
That is a typical phenomenon with people who are very strong with pencils and then start working in Photoshop.
If I may, I would suggest practicing landscapes from ref, just to get your skills on the same level as drawings.
Hope you don't mind my advice,
Khan

Hello there Humza.
Once again I am just amazed at the array of great material. I have a long way to go myself before I am anywhere even close to displaying work of this nature and scale. Truly wonderful, thank you so much for sharing.
I have picked up what I can only describe as being a technical/structural ommission or error in the very first image shown. Love your thing with bridges and Airships too by the way lol. Yes, anyway, you're probably more than aware of it but I wanted to draw your attention to the bridge in the foreground across the frame, where it meets the island formation, looking below the main deck reveals what appears to be some considerable width. However when we look toward the isle detail through the structure of the bridge to the right it appears to be missing shade generated by the main deck as well as it far side structurals.
Tough to explain but study in that area reveals it clearly. It is the kind of thing I have frequently found myself doing over the years and kicking myself for lol. Easy to do. I'm sure perfectly fixable as is the domain of all things digital :)
Again, if my observation is of an arrangement that is by design then please forgive me. I remain humbled by your amazing work.
Take care,
Jan.

if im reading it correctly, i think he just means darken the area under the bridge on the left stantion...i only see it because within just a few "feet" in the painting it seems to be substantually darker. It's not a big deal to me and obviously is a pretty smal fix. nice work man.

Yeah thanks Wayne, I think I understood what he was talking bout the 2nd time around, I'll take care of it as soon as I get a chance. Thanks.

Hey Humza,
One brief crit. In a few of your environmental paintings I couldn't help but notice the use of cloned elements. Particularly the birds and blimps. My only advice would be to use cloning a bit more sparingly or paint some details in over the clone work to give some more variety to the areas. In the case of the flocks of birds, you may try to vary their size a bit more so they don't seem quite so repetitive.
Otherwise keep up the good work. It's coming along nicely.

I think I know what Mox3d's original critisism was, even tho he didn't express it very well.
I have attempted a clumsy paintover in order to demonstrate what I think he meant (forgive my execution, I'm not a photoshop guy, & I had to do this with a mouse..) which is basically a problem regarding perspective, & the percerption of spacial depth.
Mox3d: I fI inderstand your meaning wrongly.. i apologise.
On the left is your original, on the right my 'fixed' version.

Bullseye sir. Thank you. I obviously couldn't explain it very well at all lol but Staz, you got it. It was glaring at me, as it no doubt is now glaring at Humza lol.
Good show :)

thanks.. i hope you didn't think i was stealing your thunder, or stepping on your toes.
btw.. for what it's worth, i think you made a good job of attempting to express your critisism, it's just that defining a visual problem in words is sometimes near impossible.. which is why i didn't even attempt it.. just went straight for the.." i can't tell you... but i can draw it"" approach..lol

Thanks 2 both you guys for taking the time.
And Staz has a point, sometimes it can be realy difficult and confusing to put a visual problem into words. I have definitely had that experience. Some of the best help that I have ever gotten painting has been from people taking a painting I had done and doing a paint-over on top of it, as oppose to people trying to explain it.
It's funny, I had totally been aware of that while I was working on it, but it was so small I figured I'd wait until later 2 fix it....and then had just been staring at the painting for so long my mind jus kinda blanked on it...thanks again.

Hi humza - I will make another attempt of verbalizing a point of critique. First off, I really love your worlds. Very imaginative, very unique in its mood. Thanks for showing these.
One thing i recognized is that your skies keep displaying the same brightness values as the environments. That doesn't work in favor for the readability of your images. It becomes more obvious, when you desaturate your images..
I want to show you what I mean with a little paintover which I had the audacity to make..
Hope you don't mind this one too!
best,
Mücke

Hey man nice work. Is your storyboard stuff in conjunction with Doug Chiang that would kick ass?

Thanks ab4185. These storyboards were done in conjunction with LucasArts. Although it's funny you should mention Doug Chiang since we went to the same school and I just talked to him recently at Siggraph.

Here are some character work I would like some feedback on. I usually wind up doing environments and stuff work wise and don't really get the opportunity to show do other character side thought I'd like to.
Anyways, critiques and comments encouraged!
