Juchuuu, I'm the third one. Unfortunately it is at expense of quality. But I did this about an hour, and I can't believe that you, other guys, can paint such beatiful things in this time. I can't believe my eyes if I see some of your pics and them there is working time about an hour. For me it would be a matter of whole summer :)
So this is my medic bot

My version has direct feed cameras that go directly to medics in the hospital who operate the robot via remote control. The chest is a medicine cabinet stocked with anything needed in an emergency. It uses high intensity magnets rotated at either a fast speed for flight or slowly for hovering.

I really wish I had a painting program so I can start coloring these things. Any suggestions?

Until you can afford Photoshop or Painter, try the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) at www.gimp.org Since you seem to have access to a scanner, it shouldn't be too much of a problem painting your scans with a mouse if you don't have a tablet either. If you need any help with GIMP if you decide on that route (its free... Just a tad unstable sometimes due to the fact its open source... SAVE OFTEN!) let me know.

Taimic: The three eyes add a certain character to the bot, but the composition is not thaught out and the background and setting (smoke and fire) detract from the design.

Great Distance: I like the design - reminds me of the droid character in Star Fleet. The simplistic facial expression on the patient gives him a lot of character.

Gumish: Interesting idea, but the way you have painted the bot doesn't sit well with the background. I assume you are going for a speed blur look, but I suggest you try more bold strokes mixed in with the smudges.

Goran: Your style has changed since I last frequented these shores, but the reason I remember your name is becouse my brain links it with strong B&W ink tool images. I think the CG textures and saturated colour are doing your lines no favours here IMHO, but I do like the front end of the bot.

Hamsta: Another familiar name I remember. And I see from looking at the backlog that you are still one of the most consistent DSG'ers. The design works well and I like how the middle bit looks like it spins as the bot moves. The arms don't look right though.

Zaphid: The desing is nice and different (particularly the flaps), but the background and huge typography really let it down.

Android27: Your desing is very un-intimidating and friendly which is something I should have tried for. The hover part is kinda lost (visually) but your description makes up for it. Oh, and you should check out the early (free) versions of Artrage. Limited, but with a very intuative interface and can produce great results with a little forthaught.

Sudsy: The stretcher element is a fun addition and the incusion of a natty pillow suits the retro 50's style design. Like myself, you seem to have had trouble with the back end. It looks very heavy and blobby.

Ninjerina: A fun retro design - the hat is a great addition. The background and composition could have been better.

Riess: The tracks look great, but it's hardly a 'hover-bot'. The torse is nice and the head is particularly strong, but those overt black lines do a lot of damage.

Farvus: Damn nice colours (apart from the sea-green front bits). Nice design aswell, although it took me a while to work out the patient.

Revelations: Simple and clean design. The arm looks as though it is off another machine so I would suggest trying to stick to the same overall look in future.

Racasdorph: I like the design of this. All those bolts gives it a slight steampunk feel - and it does kinda look a little used and battered. Nice one. The way you have rendered the glow from the lights lets the image down IMHO.

J.S. Sabastian: I can clearly see you had fun with this. Overall it doesn't work too well and the background detracts. But I love all the individual attachments and blue splurgy (?) things. The look on the guys face is great.

Oh, and dig the username (even though I'm no good at chess. ;)

K-bot: When I squint, the overall shape looks good, but there are a number of inner elements that don't sit right with me. Your rendering is very promising, but I think you should have stuck to a few big bigger, bolder shapes to begin with. Promising stuff, though.

Archerion: Your image suffers from exactly the same issues mine does. Your lines and shapes fuck with the eye and distort perspective. The whale-like shape is cool.

TheBeast: Wicked design, but it looks like it could to more harm than good. Haha... Just nit-picking. Nice one!

Disaster: Yeah, I think the 'hover' thing is kinda lost, but I do like the fem-design very much. A bit too much bloom going on but the head design is very nice. Hajime Sorayama maybe?

DefiledVisions: Well sexy. It doesn't look like it's gonna do much health care, but the design is tight enough. The ground strokes give it a lot of energy. My favorite so far.

Vaughany_Boy: I love the turtle/carapace design of this. It shows a lot of character,

Hamorhage
August 10th, 2008, 03:34 PM
Taimic: ok crit...I'm having a hard time here. I like the droid design but the image itself raises a lot of confusion. Is that a fire he is distinguishing? Or is that the steam coming from his hovering? If so I think this paramedic would cause more harm then save lives :D
so really just try to make more clear what's happening in the image next dsg.
great distance: cute little drawing, the patient just looks to casual. If he's just been saved he'd have to act a bit different like" oh..wow..thankx mr hover droid".
gumish: That's a cool piece, looks more like a superhero :D I think he does look too human (no this is no advertsiment for the upcoming xbox360 game too human). Anyway nice approach.
goran: who, what a new approach since the last dsg. This one is even more spacy! This is almost sureal. Love the texture of the surroundings.
hamsta: really like this one, very harmonic colorscheme. its funny, I once read that fading elements should become blue-ish, even though the foreground character here is blue, and it defenitly looks closer, guess that rule was a load of #@: ;)
One of your better dsg's again.
zaphid: oh oh watch out, that background makes my eyes hurt. There's too obvious use of blurring and from what I can judge here I think you worked in one layer. try to keep the background on a seperate layer athen you could color that gray block behind the character, would look already more convincing.
android27: dont worry about coloring, there's so much you can do with a pencil. like for example block in shades ratgher then using lines to define a figure, the better your shading is (and understanding of light) the better you would be able to color.
sudsy: I like the vibrant colors. I had the same idea with the bed :D
munin raven: how epic, it almost looks like a space ship rather then a droid. I disagre on teh back end, I love the texture and wild strokes.
ninjera: very nice entry, I like the interaction witha patient. The bot is very funny too, almost like he/she/it is getting shocked herself :D Just try to give it a bit more depth, like using stronger black and whites. Just turn it into grayscale and see if it looks to dull, then add some more shades to make the picture more intense.
riess: yes you should! DSG is brilliant :D Love the bot, its very friendly looking.
farvus: class, very finished work, and believable. no crits.
revelations: again simple, but it looks like it could be ina film or cartoon. good work.
racasdorph: it's a very moody painting which I love, but the paramedic looks very menacing! I'd run away if that came to help me :D
sabastian: very confusing as to whats happening. all the characters are just staring tight into the camera. the main chracter stands out completely but doesnt like he has any emotions whcih doesnt help clarify what's going on. droid itself is good though.
k-bot: interesting piece, again looks more like it's some vehicle then a droid, love the painting technique tho.
archerion: sam comment, looks like a space ship or racer rather then paramedic.
the beast: that's a very nice drawing, I envy people who can draw with so much care.
D1S4something: I love it! Sexy bots are always on top! euhmm..well it's a lovely piece!
defiledvision: nice! I completely love the drawing, you gave lots of space around the idea and I like the detail to how it works. the color really works well, kinda gets the feeling across as if it's painted on brown paper.
vaughany boy: his head looks like it's upside down? :D

oof..that wasa whole lot to go through! :D So here's mine then, I bailed the "over" part. I was making some sketches and I thought a bot with long legs looked much funnier for my idea.
I wanted to draw the patient on the bed too bit ran out of time this evening. (dishes to do before the girlfriend comes home).
Anyway here's the sketch that started the idea (http://nightgig.com/oneminute/MYTH/conceptart/32.jpg).

Hey, I just finished my first DSG entry, I hope it's good enough.

I did the line art with vector/pen tools in Photoshop, which I havent used in a while, so some of the lines may not be perfect, but overall, I'm fairly happy with what I produced. (Probably took around 2.5 to 3 hours)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/wolveeberserker/Medi-Bot2.jpg

A few comments:
gumish those metallic reflections on it's upper body are great, but we lose the sense of 'metal' farther back. the wing on the right looks way better than the one on the left, I would suggest trying to avoid the perfectly round ends on your marks, (if you dont have a tablet it makes that a lot harder though)

sudsy I love the concept, my only problem is that it looks like the thing has no sensors (optical or otherwise) to properly diagnose and properly treat a patient, (or is it remote operated?)

Munin Raven thats just an awesome design, I'm impressed with all the little circuitry/machinery underneath, very industrial.

riess That thing is adorable! Would definately put the patient at ease. haha..

TheBeast I would love to see that colored, it's so precise, so technical--which are both things I need to work on in my art. (It kinda reminds me of the Star Wars Probe Droids)

D1S4ST3R Wow, that is so awesome. The metallic reflections are so good.

DefiledVisions The little window adds to the technical aspect of the piece big time, but even without it that thing has an incredible amount of style. Nice use of minimalistic background as well.

vaughany_boy I really like the design, I would have liked to see a more polished version of this--just a bit more precise line quality would have helped immensely.

Hamorhage Overall, I like it a lot, but I can't decide which I like more, the adorable robot, or the surprised family in the car, haha.

MattVG How long did that take you? The line quality is amazing, how did you make it? I can tell you're very tech savvy, studying industrial design maybe? Of all the sketches in the whole thread, I can envision yours flying around and moving most believably.

DefiledVisions: That's some crazy design, totally dig it. it looks insect-like yet somehow very military. The colors are really nice too.

Farvus: I love the simple elegance of your piece. It looks very 3d, and the mechanical hand design is cool.

Munin Raven: The insec-shaped body and small arm makes for some great shapes. Nice textures on your pieces.

Hamsta: great colors as usual, with good implication to space.

goran: your rendering skills is just crazy, and I love your abstract backgrounds. The design is really sleek too, right on topic. I want to know how you make those backgrounds...

Hey,

So I'm hardly in a postion to be giving feedback and all but Paul McCarthy said the love you give is equal to the love you receive or some hippy sentiment like that. (Did Ringo say that?) So I'm going to try and say something nice and something critical about everyone's Sketch.

Djinn, Thanks! The metalic parts weren't supposed to metalic but White. Oh well guess I was lazy. I like your little guy. I'm not sure if it's little really. But I can imagine it zipping around takin care of stuff. A lot of personality. I think the light on his head could use some work. When a light is red like that it's not usually opaque but red around the fall off. So it would be bright white or pale amber in the center. Something to think about.

MattVG, Very nice clean design. I would like to see a bit more function to the form. But really it's spot on. It looks like a first aid bot. I imagine it's about the size of a video camera and it's like a first response robot that arrives before the human paramedics.

Hamorhage, I like the anthropomorphism. Funny characters. I would like to see a bit more depth. (easier said than done, It's not like mine had any depth) The flat composition is usually very competitive. I had a look at your website. nice! Thanks also.

Munin Raven, Thanks for the feedback. I agree, regretfully. Thought about adding lens flares too. Kidding. Hajime Sorayama is great. I haven't thought about him in a while. Truely a master. On to your sketch. Very nice design. I can see some of your influences in it. I would like to see some function in this as well although it looks like it can do anything/everything.

vaughany_boy, I like the turtley look. I always liked that kind of head sticking out of th chest look. Like in The 5th element. I think your compostion could be more thoughtful. It's a good design I think your sketch could reflect that.

DefiledVisions, Thanks. You have a great color pallet, composition and style. tryng to find something to critque, The thrusters porportions are abit out of perspective but it's forgiven cause it's a sketch. It's very cool and your sketchbook is awesome too.

TheBeast, I really like it. I would love to see it in a 3/4 perspective or something. Not sure if there is anything medical about it but it sure is cool. I Imagine it's in an open configuration, like it alll folds up nicely into a lozenge. It looks like it would be a sweet tattoo.

That's all I can do for now. Hey Sorry if it's a Faux Pas giving feedback as a new member. Just trying to contribute.

It's great to meet you guys. I've looked at a lot of your sketchbooks and you all got talent. It's inspiring. Thanks

goran: Wow. That almost looks like a post-apocalyptic painful way to be healed!

muninraven: I like the look of the ship! It just happens to look like Boba Fett's(?) ship laying on it back with a paint job... Very detailed!

thebeast: The detail in your design is utterly amazing! I can't believe it!

defiledvisions: That's very creative with a good design. Keep up the good work.

hamorhage: I had to laugh when I had seen yours. Wonderful work, the look on everyone's faces and the elongated bed / body is classic! Thanks for the word of advice! You're right. I'm just going to learn more instead of coloring for more detail!

I would have liked to talk more about everyone's but I'm still half asleep trying to wake up for work. Haha. Thank you to everyone who suggested programs for coloring. I'll have to dabble with them someday. Once I figure out how to give thanks I'll start handing them out!

D1S4ST3R: I like your nurse-bot. The only thing that disturbs me about her is that both the needles and the lollipops come from the same compartment :P And yes, I struggled with my bots functionality. I just couldn't get it to look like it had all sorts of compact tech "under the hood" so-to-speak. I too imagined it about the size of a video camera (one with an actual tape). So I guess I got that right.

DefiledVisions: Your bot looks insect-like which gives me the impression it can handle itself in a firefight on the battlefield while scooping up wounded soldiers.

Munin Raven: I enjoy the sketchy, grungy, textured look you gave your bot. I have trouble getting a good textured look on my digital paintings but you look to have gotten it no problem.

Djinn: I'm glad you like it. I think it took me about 2.5 hrs. The initial sketch didn't take too long but I fiddled around forever with trying to get it to look functional. I don't study industrial design but I've been studying perspective and I tried to use it on this one.

Atriace: I like the clean, simple, sleek design. I'm unsure of the size though. To me it looks like it could be large and manned or small. It looks cool though.

Well done everyone! So many different ideas. I like the DSG!

Munin Raven I like the vague beetle shape of your bot, and all the mechanical details.
The front is threatening and seems like it would be a better match on a torture bot.
The bg isn't working quite right, and I cant say exactly why.

Hamorhage That was sarcasm about the rule, right? You can see that distant mountains really do turn blue and desaturated.

Your robot seems to be in a constant state of falling forward - the center of gravity is obviously too far in front, and the awkward arms (what is it holding? a cell phone?) aren't helping.
It's a little hard telling where the robot starts and the bus begins, a result of the way they line up.
The passengers are cute.

Nightblue looks like a high tech iron maiden, I wouldn't want to find myself in that thing.
Does it scoop people off the street? why does it have that wedge in front?

The contrast between the cool blues and the warm yellows is a step in an interesting direction, but something about this particular mix is a little harsh, I think a more orange tint would have worked better.
