DESCRIPTION

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus)

Icarus! HOWEVER, can be any version of Icarus *except* the original Greek Mythology version.

Feel free to play around to make things interesting, but make sure to stay true to the original idea!

NOTES:
No, I does not have to be a literal retelling. Aka, you don't *need* to have wings. But you WILL want it to read as belonging to the same story/moral. For example, the soldier one is probably too vague - could relate to absolutely anything, there's nothing 'Icarus' about it in particular. The one with the boy on the edge of the cliff is much closer to what I mean. (But I think I will still have wings in mine anyway. :) ) Keep in mind that if *I* can't see the Icarus in it, or Oreg can't, it won't be going to poll. I know it's a tough order, folks, but I also know you can do it!

Yes, He has to be male. Sorry! I love love love gender-switching and all that, but Icarus is pretty specifically male. :)

No, the image does not have to involve the fall. Necessarily, anyway. But his fall *is* the most obviously recognizable story-point, and if you're diverging far from the subject matter, you'll want to keep as many cues as possible. If you were, however, taking Icarus literally and putting him simply in a different period, you could even just having him standing around - other visual cues will give us a clue to who he is.

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE? (reserved for rounds with a large amount of entries).

--------------------

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/ChowPics/frame.jpg
:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
Chow##_Nickname
example: "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg"

THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling.
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

Here's my take on Icarus and his attempted escape. I appreciate the comments from the other thread and wish I had time to incorporate them - you're right that the needle could be clearer. I also wish I had time before heading out to give critiques. I'll do that when I get back at the end of next week. Good luck everyone!

Hi everyone

This is my approach to the idea of Icarus.
Actually Icarus is the small guy on the left being burned to ashes...RIP
The hurled character on the right is Daedalos surviving this explosion...

Story

They were about to invent a new kind of fuel, but Icarus was greedy and wanted too much... now he pays the prize for it..
Daedalus actually is the real hero of the story...because he invented something great and he knew its limits...Icarus was the young kid that misused the whole thing...
( Like in modern society the atomic Bomb for instance )

My inspiration for the pic was Breugels "The fall of Icarus".

Can you find Icarus? ;-)

Enough talk... hope you like it a bit...

PS: I hope Ill make it to the poll...:asskisser:

I decided to go with a space version of Icarus.

The basic story is that as it flew further out into deep space and closer to Saturn the special space flight suit known as the icaRUS began to malfunction, ultimately leading to exploding equipment and the loss of pressurized containment of the body within.

There goes mine:

Icarus was a silly child who wanted to feel hot and smell the clouds, so he looked into the Davinci studies of flight prototipes and attached a bizarre havoc of primitive machinery to his back. Watch him at the moment of glory before the terrible fall!

For those about to draw, I salute you!!!

i had an emergency, so this will be my final.. TT _ TT

icarus is falling was the most popular idea to explain the whole story, however i simply want to avoid from doing real wing. to make icarus more dramatic, i choose the moment he's drowning. to be honest, this is my first time doing underwater picture and i change (more to improve i guess) my style of painting a bit. so far, i'm really proud with the result eventhou there are alot of elements can be improve more there.

Uh, yo! Hey ladies and gents. Firstly I'm just gonna go straight out and say my heart is pounding, haha! This is my first entry, ever, on conceptart, so, uh, yeah. Don't go easy on me, ;D Mostly I hope I get this posting thing right!

I went with my own interpretation of the Icarus prompt, and this was a last minute entry change, since I fail at coloring like some of the old pros on here, much to my chagrin. :D

Meet the Morning Star, the original Icarus. Lucifer owns a special place in my heart, with his pride and his sad resignation; being so close to the sun wouldn't be a crime, if the sun wasn't so jealous. Consider this mid-fall, in the throes of a defiant angel's rebellion.

(Er. Sorry about the size of my font, lol. I just realized how big it is, and I've already flattened it, and it's too early in the morning for me to figure out how to fix it.)

Icarus was High Ruler of his tribe for he had the power to make light and heat. Worshipped as 'The solar deity', 'Bringer of light and life' and 'The Bird Titan' Icarus lived unchallenged with his Shaman and council in order. However Icarus was no more than a magician with gold and feathered masks to propel him into the fears and successes of every citizen in his rule.

Icarus grew tired of his status and showed the foolish nature of vanity and self importance when his ambition compelled him to desperate fantacy. He wanted not just celebrated life but eternal omnipresent existance to controll peoples fortunes, turning common men into enlightened beings. This fantacy swelled in his mind and making Icarus deluded and psychotic.

In his mind he is a God.

After summoning every Shaman, councilor, sophist, warlord, peasant and beast from all corners of his rule to his grand Palace Icarus gave order that the 'Transcendence of the Supreme Ceramony' shall begin. Standing on his Royal Pilar of excellence Icarus then proceeded with an astonishingly antagonizing speach calling all men pathetic and trivial, useless and disgusting, and claiming how he can save the individual one at a time turning each citizen into angry vengeful people. He then displayed his powers by making his staff shine with all the majesty of the Sun. The crowds were frightened and a deep silence fell over the regimented masses. As the light grew Icarus laughed manically and calmed he could feel his blood transforming to eternal roots of time and his mind was one with the Earths soul. The light shone so brightly that by this time people could not look directly at him nor in his direction and half the crowd were unable to see anything. Icarus run towards the Pilars edge flapping his arms and as he did so he lept into the air and cried out 'Remeber your Ruler the Bird Titan and reveal in my new glory as your God!

His voiced stopped suddenly and the light from his staff vanished leaving a dark and lonely astmosphere. At the bottom of the Royal Pilar of excellence, the Icarus corpse lay motionless decorated in gold that shined no more, and feathers that had fallen apart.

Icarus had left a legacy of the High Ruler who wanted God status and his story was passed along from generation to generation. However for the beings who were at the 'Transcendence of the Supreme Ceramony' they were left with more than just a story they were left with lives without light. So bright did Icarus's staff shine that he had blinded the entire gathering forcing his people to live a life without light.

Yeah...

Enjoyed this one!

So here's my first chow ever , don't know if the character needs a brief introduction . I made it today , the last day :) . For a more detailed view , you can check out my sketchbook.

So this Icarus belongs to the modern world the world , trying to get out of the life of urban maze he aggressively roles he's skates over the desolate buildings roof tops spreading his wings, flying a dream.

My final.
Mike Sunder,a test pilot on a military base in Colorado, always loved to fly. His father, a former general and now a military scientist, had gotten him into the army. Although he was constantly wrecking planes pushing them to their limits, he was allowed to stay because of his father.
Finally, a new challenge presented itself. A jetpack nicknamed the "Icarus Project" was invented by his father. It could go further than any jetpack in existance, but it had yet to be tested. Although his father and several other scientists warned him, Sunder could not resist this new challenge.
On a routine flight, he pushed past the others in the group, going higher and higher, trying to see how far he could go. Unfortunately, the jetpack went out on him, and he came tumbling back to the earth beneath him.

Excerpted From the News Sun Times:
"Obsessed with the sun, 28 Year old Icarus Johnson spent his time and meager funds to build a small (very small) manned craft to experience the star up close. He never got beyond the mesosphere (about 45 Miles up) before his ship broke up and burned over eastern Ohio. Residents report a wide variety of parts falling from the sky as well as some very crispy snack cakes Icarus had planned to use to sustain himself during his doomed flight. Snack cakes he will now never get to eat.

Icarus is the latest work of a serial killer that calls himself "the oracle". known for staging the deaths of his victims like greek mithological tales. Here he is, sending "icarus" a.k.a. Ivan Gallardo, leader and bassplayer of the pop rockband "fireflyer", to a last walk near the cliff from wich he will drop to inminent death and later will be found by the police in the morning. In the rock he pulls, carved goes a message: "Here lies ICARUS, who flew so close to the sun, that burned his wings and fell to his death. His music sucked as well."
The killer cutted ivan's back and put a couple of metal wings on him, chain an oil lamp on his hand simbolizing the sun, burn his eyes and chopped one of his arms off, presumibly a throphy for the the oracle.

Ivan and his band were on the top, making successful records, tons of money, and touring the country. Many fans blamed Gallardo and his manager for being a sellout and firing the other original members of the band after they got a juicy record deal and not wanting to follow his "new" musical direction. Fireflyer began as a metal band that had little success with his 3rd album "Ode to the sun".

Icarus the Fallen was a proud and mighty angel who thought himself not only above all creation, but the equal of God. Wings aflame and exiled from the heavens, he now looks skyward and thinks to himself only one thing:

"Their loss."

Every 6 centuries, in the 7th region of hell, a demon resurrects with a soul shard of the dreamer Icarus. Filled with visions of power and glory, the Icarus Anointed soars across the pits to challenge the Gate Keeper of Heaven. For to touch the pearly gates is to claim the diabolic throne of Proto Lucifer. Alas, no one has ever reached the price. Like a moth to a flame, he will burn his wings and crash down into the void.

I didn't stray far from the original story, I just changed where he was from. I went with an asian paper box kit/fan look... I liked the concept of Icarus being passionate and I think paper wings that catch fire help emphasize that aspect of the character. I don't feel that this is as finished as I'd like it to be, so I'll definitely be revisiting it later.

First CHOW Entry, First Piece w Tablet.

Story:
Icarus was a hermit, and a philosopher. He lived high in the mountains, far from the noise and worries of civilization--he traveled to town only when he needed a new batch of books to study. Icarus came home one day to find that a mysterious note had appeared on his simple desk. The note claimed to be from his father, Daedalus, but this was impossible--his father had disappeared several weeks earlier.

Daedalus had his own cottage, not far from where Icarus lived. The life-long goal they shared, had been to escape the prison of mortal reality through spirituality and philosophy. The note which now laid on his desk was written in strange, cryptic grammar, only vaguely representing sentences.

Icarus hiked to his favorite mountain peak to meditate on the strange note. Suddenly, the words flashed in firey licks before his mind's eye, every line forging new connections within his mind. He was overwhelmed by the sensation of transcendence, and as he swam through the newly discovered otherworld, his physical form began to float into the sky.

His curiosity overtook him, he delved too deep too quickly, the pure energy of the other realm was too much for his astral form, which began to burst forth, tearing his mortal vessel apart in a flash of brilliant light. He had escaped the prison of reality, only to find oblivion.

(Hope that wasn't too long. Please let me know if I've done anything wrong and I'll fix it ASAP.)

Okay, pheew.. Worked so hard my hand's hurting. I'm sorry it's only half-finnished. Wanted to get it presentable

Icarus F. Barrett

Blessed with a cunning mind and blazing ambition, Icarus excelled his friends allready at a very young age. His father was a successful craftsman and a historian. After hearing the story of the man whom he got his name from Icarus's mind was set - He knew he was destined for great things.
Mr. Barrett warned him of how hybris caused the mythical Icarus's death, but the young man didn't care. After all, he wasn't going to fly towards the sun.

As the years passed, Icarus enrolled prestigious educations and passed with top grades. He soon got a job at the huge buisness complex known as 'The Sun'. With an everlasting ambition and eyes on power, he soon got promotions and climbed the ladder of the company. As his salery increased, so did his spendings. Wasting money here and there, Icarus didn't consider the consequences of his actions. He was soon in debt. Whilst running the company, expanding it's stocks and earning it huge reputation, he also used the companys resources for own intentions.

The Sun went bankrupt.

Being forced to sell the company, and allready having massive debts, Icarus lost everything. His father had recently passed away and he was stuck in a black hole. As a homeless being forced on the street, avoiding the financial system - he had no other options than to hide.

One day he came to recall the tale of Icarus, how he, filled with the freedom of flying, strived to reach higher. He realised how well the tale fit in on him. How he, blinded with his ambition and bright, money-filled future, strived to reach higher only to have his wings of success burned by 'The Sun'.

Icarus chose to dissapear. The once so successful man was now gone, and was never to be found again.

This memorial statue depicts Sir. Icarus F. Barrett. Born - July 24, year 1976 | Death - Unknown.

Well I didn't paticipate because somehow I can't see it in my mind, if I can't visualize it, I don't want to draw it. There're a lot of amazing works, but some of them feels like a bit off from "Icarus". So I only voted for a few.

one exception being Villa's wonderful piece. It doesn't really go with the topic...IMHO at least, but it's just a really strong piece in both lighting and concept. I just have to vote for it.

Indeed, daestwen was a bit lenient with some of these. Some quality levels as well as the level of finish/polish on a few - you guys be glad daest was in a good mood!

Voted for podimus for a great modern day interpretation of the character, nemnomico for beautiful wing mechanism design (though it comes close to dwarfing the character, which might have been avoided), and villa for high quality and beautiful finish work (even though I find the backstory ridiculous - a bit too Saw for my tastes, no offense).

I think septomin did a beautiful piece, but it's more Lucifer than Icarus to me. And props to armando for doing both Icarus and his father, Daedelus. It's interesting to see the similarities and the differences between father and son.

This is the cruel fate of internet... I cannot see the bigger version of the robot entry, or guess who did it... but I love the look of the thumbnails, so I broke the rule of never voting on thumbnails.

My vote went to:

UCT: The design is very creative and visually pleasing. It's nice to see you focusing on the design instead of losing your head on other stuff like me :P

Vandalfish: Your piece looks so full of emotion, and the colors and composition are amazing. I love the dream-like quality of the illustration. Sweet style!

The big robot entry I'm fated not to see for real: really cool design and great sihouette, also you are the only one who took the mech character approach!

Close favorites:

David-David: the movement and energy in your piece is great, and I love the wing design. The kid's face kinda freaked me out though!

Podimus: I meant to click on your check box but somehow missed :( I love the simplicity of your design, and the confidence with which you rendered your character. The dare-devil approach is very clever.

DefiledVisions: I really hope you finish this piece despite of the chow having finished. Love the rich colors and the magical lines of yours.

Rodriguez: Very clear reference to the topic. The burning wing looks cool.

oddy: Your idea is really cool, with Icarus sinking and the bubbles forming wings that do not carry him. The perspective of the top bit of the picture is differentn though - Icarus is sinking down into the painting, yet the mountains in the background are parallel to the picture plane.

Great round this time with amazing ideas and beautiful paintings :) looking forward to the next round!

JSpayde: Yours ended up cut simply because it was too messy and hard to read. The concept was a decent one, but I didn't feel that your image was getting it across - instead all I was reading were explosions and blood. I felt that if you hadn't put "Icarus" on his wing, then it wouldn't have read at all the way you wanted to! My suggestions: Try to keep the image cleaner next time - either less cluttered or more clearly rendered. Also, a face would have gone a long way into making the character on this one. :) To get what I mean, check out the Robot in the poll, or Posh's robot back in the original thread - both aren't human, but their 'faces' have a real sense of character that lends itself to the image. In the end, ChOW is ALL about character!

trp: Yours came down to quality issues. Some that I picked out: First, it looks a little too shakey - did you maybe use MS Paint for your image? Secondly, you have some anatomy issues, lighting issues (the shadow he casts is backwards from where it should be according to the light on him), perspective issues, etc. Your concept was interesting, so just keep working at it and you'll see yourself up in a ChOW poll someday soon.
