j.mac - you're doing GREAT!!!! Yes.. you should measure more (not like i do :( i should do that too but lately i draw only becouse it calms my mind - and i'm in a "very hurry" every time)
so.. pay more attention to the form now.. leave the shading and values for later.
here - your value range should be bigger (more contrast)

jhibbs: i have seen much passion from you through these threads. you are doing great work! your passion is inspiring. if it isnt too much to ask, i would like to see more detail, i can see you have it in you.
jhibbs
November 8th, 2003, 12:08 AM
killing people-thanks for the kind words. to me, detail and frustration are similar words. every time i have tried to get more detailed it comes out looking like a piece of shit that i want to toss. in fast short pieces, i have the colors, and the forms, and proportions, but when i try to go more detailed, it just falls apart. not only can i not get the details/planes to feel more defined, but i also usually lose the afformentioned correct aspects of the piece. this also applies to my oil paintings; i dont know if its a problem with the way i start, or i just cant use the materials right (or PS). technical/realism based help is nonexistent at my school, and im kinda bitter about it in case you cant tell. i kinda wish i was at a more realism-based art school.... i would love help from one of the pros or people at better schools but i feel stupid asking..
enough talking, heres me trying to be more detailed for today:

Thanks oblio :D i appreciate your help. I see what you mean, i need to get more range. darker darks and better form/structure got it :p
this one is much better it looks good. i think you should work more on structure and form too, maybe less attention on your gotee (sp?) i find it to be your main focus in all of your drawings. i think just alittle less attention on that and more on the rest might help :D just a thought. i hope this doesn't offend you. keep it up.
jhibbs - i wish i could see it but there is red x man
Oh a side note, i think for each month where there is a holiday or what have you, we should have a themed sp around the end of the month. to spice things up alittle... i don't know it is just an idea i had that might be fun. what do you guys/gals think?

obilo: you are out? you may be sincere when you say it, but i dont want to believe such a thing. i hope you muster the strength to just hang in there and persevere whatever has got you down.
jhibbs: in all honesty i think you did a wonderful attempt. i thank you for trying it - that was cool. i feel for you on what you have spoke of, being lost and in need of a mentor or some sort of direction or help. all i have is a sight into something wonderful, conceptart being the small window. i dont know what to tell you - if i tried, am not sure my advice would be all that surprising to hear.

faxtar - more :D
jhibbs - nice one! i like the the pose you look style'n :D
mcm - ah good another one from you. do you always work in black and white with grays? maybe you could try some colours sometime unless you are waiting till you are more comfortable.... i dunno just a thought. :)
kp - i understand what you mean. that is what this place is for me. conceptart is truely is an inspiration to me :D
well i had a busy day today, all the trains were dumb and there was construction on the tracks so i was delayed getting to the national portfolio day review which sucked because of the mass amounts of people attending it. anyways i talked to the director of admissions there for art center and she like my portfolio which made my day :D and after finishing all of my homework for tomorrow i decide to try a sp.... which i must say i had no energy left to do so here is a weak attempt at a sp.

Hey Blankslatejoe thanks alot, that gnome took me forever, but it was worth it to have nimra (http://nimra.deviantart.com/) say "Very nice drawing" THAT dude is crazzzy.
heres one I did yesterday using a new method i learned. You start by rubbing graphite powder into your paper and then "draw" using your kneaded eraser to pull up the graphite making it a lighter tone. It teaches you to pay attention to value and light instead of lines.

same here, I've theard of the technique, but never tried it. It's very moody, very classic looking.
Thanks for that nimra link, he IS incredible. I went through one class where we learned a little about that technique, and it's lengthy process, but you do learn a lot. Here's something from that class, it's not quite up to nimra's par, but it turned out pretty well. The process took about 3 weeks. (http://www.30lives.com/images/portfolio/pf_shoe.jpg)

jmac-thanks, i shouldnt technically have time for these, but after so long doing it you always find time. also this year i realized how much time people spend sitting around doing nothing, and try to eliminate it as much as i can. i do a self portrait every day, play footbag from 2-3 hours a day, have class, and yet i still get all my work done. never stop moving :D

jhibbs- i really like how you use the paper tone as your shadow area. I'd like to see your eyes in a piece here and there again, but I do like those harsh shadows. that portrait is also pretty rad, I dig the contrast and the fact that the red color still feels like a "cool red"
mindcandy- i dig that little alien thing!
jmac- those are pretty good goes, whats with everyone downing their own artwork these days? I think everything I'm seeing is pretty solid stuff, considering I dont >think< anyone posting here is a professional.
J.Mac
November 20th, 2003, 12:25 PM
blankslatejoe - thanks :D it's just that i can do much better than that. nice sp's i like the 2nd one best, it has more contrast than the others. good work keep them coming!
jhibbs - that is areally cool style you have going there on the toned paper. i like how you are using shapes of colour suggest a portrait :D cool stuff!
MCM - i know how you feel.... but i think that you have a good sp going on there. for the most part it looks correct and has a good feeling to it.
here is mine it is more of a measuring exercise i did, after seeing fredflickston'es head tutorial (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14119) l which i suggest everyone should see. i became renergized, so i did this today i feel much better even though it isn't completed.

im realizing i havent dont a straight on view in ages, maybe becuase i find them boring and symmetrical. ill try one tomorrow.
blankslatejoe-alot of times i simplify or leave out eyes because i feel in too many portraits they become the focal point, and thats not really what im aiming for. i like to try and capture the weight and presence of the entire head as a whole. i also see in alot of figure work the eyes are worked over more than the rest of the head, also commonly oversized, which bothers me.
aside from that, i do tend to do alot of simplified/flattened work, and in those i flatten out all the shadows into one value sometimes, so with overhead lighting 90% of the time it means no eyes.
oils. made the hairline too far back :/

Jmac --thanks for the tut, I gotta remember to maesure like you did, it would save me a lot of problems later on
jhibbs-- lookin slick, i love those oils.
Blankslatejoe- I like number 2 the most. I like how you painted the planes of the nose.

I just had an idea. For christmas, we could do a secret santa thing. We could arrange something that would be where we would swap pictures and do portraits of eachother. I think that would be kind of fun :). Any thoughts on it?

I'd be in on the santa thing, it'd be fun!
nunch- those are really nice, keep posting! you look like the guy from donnie darko though, with those eyes...
killing-veeery coool.
brain-very fun, add it to the toon portraits thread. I really like the stylizing to the hair, but im not too keen on the bluring of the background; maybe abstract 'treeish' shapes just with crisper edges might work better.
faxtar-Nice green, i need to do some side profiles ones too..

wow so many people now!!! this is great to see this many poeple posting now. it was getting really thin for awhile around here.
patton art - nice colour study, i have nothing else to really say besides that those highlights in your hair seem to be kind of random and not thought about "imo" you have many more sp'sthan me i haven't even broke 100 yet :o great work
killing.people - really cool looking sp's, my favorite in the would have to be the 14th one i like the way it looks keep them coming
silvrain - i like how you used blue as your main colour scheme :)
brain - nice sp i like how you filled the picture plain :)
jhibbs - you are to funny with that first oils haha that made me laugh :D but i do like this one better. the mfa has a room of sargent paintings right now and they are awesome!! great work jhibbs i like how you can vary from different mediums. great work!!! :D
blackslatejoe - good work i like how you use your colours it the first one it is interesting.
nunch - nice start there! you have a good start, now you should measure where you features line up with other features. try and be analytical when you start than later move in to the rest. you work remember to measure, measure, measure, than mark and measure again to make sure....and repeat as needed. also no line is ever perminant so make as many markes as need :D i hope i am not being to strong to fast for you but i just wanted to help. good work and keep it up.
ok here is mine it isn't the greatest but i have been supper busy with finishing 7 paintings this weekend a sketch book and writing a paper. i would have done more sp's but i can't paint so it took me alot longer.....:(

J.mac- I'm not really big on measuring, but I guess now that you mentioned it, I should start.
blankslatejoe- It's funny you'd mention that because some of the people I know at school have said I'm donnie darko, in a good way. I'm not really that dark though, but yea, when I read that I laughed.

Messing around with Shii and a mirror again. Did this solely for the fun effect.
killing.people - very nice effects you have with the b/w in your last piece.
Nunch - old-fashioned pencil work, nice!
J.Mac - I like how you tighten up some parts of the picture, and leave others vague. Reminds me of a famous portrait artist who only drew half of peoples' faces. (as if I could remember his name, though)
Brain - Damn... that blue and green worked piece is really striking... lot of feeling in that.
Patton Art - Nice work on that one
Anyone else I missed, keep up the great sp work.

Wazzo - Love the colors and the general feel of it. It looks great! The eyes may be a little too big, but they look awesome. I'm still trying to figure out how it reminds you of "blackhawk" (Blackhawk Down?)
Silvrain - Wow! I love your portraits, they are nice eye candy. What do you use to get that semi transparent grayness to it? Just a low opacity brush?
Killing.People - That portrait looks like your staring right into me. Very nice job on it. The other self portraits look great too, especially that green one at the top of page 2 ;).
Nunch - I really love yours! I just don't see the Donnie Darko in you, though ;). You wouldn't want to be like him, schizophrenic and all ;). Although, it does produce some good art, that schizophrenia
J.Mac - Looking good, man. You may want try some new poses ;). Think android style. :)

Still with the Shi. Much like OpenCanvas, but.. slightly more versatile. Low opacity smeary brush is the rockin'. Tightened up half the pic to an insane degree, and then realized it was a good effect, as-is. Added some color, and details, and voila
Wazzo- yeah, gotta be the eyes. Wonder where he got to, farley too! Everyone who used to DSP seemes to have vanished
F3nix - Awesome color scheme, The eyes are really striking.
Duracel - The textures in that are awesome. Painter, I assume? What brush?

Nope, its Photoshop7 - i make a lot use of the Custom-Brush-Engine.
Like yours too, but your blur<->sharp is a bit unbalanced.
Fenix, ...only one word: "hot"
killing.people, good one ... a bit to smeary for my taste - some crisper edges would be nice. But hey, you felt good doing it, thats more important! ;)

Andrew -
As artists, we share a bond together. We are connected no matter where we stand in life. Some of us are students, teachers, friends, acquaintances, or we may not even know eachother. This forum connects us together, makes us a group of people that love one thing so much: art. We can inspire, be inspired, get help, or help eachother. Sadly, though, most people never truly understand how much a forum like this can mean to some of the aspiring artists out there. Your words are the most touching thing I have ever heard on the internet. If it came from anyone but you, it wouldn't mean as much. But you have a commitment to this forum and the people on it. We respect you. We love you.
Happy birthday, man.

Killing - It's great to see your face in here regularly. I remember how much I wanted you to be a regular contributor in here about 7 months ago. It's good to see you finally took the plunge. Great work man.
Nova - Thank you, I appreciate the compliment. I personally like your stuff, this SP is beautiful. The hand is kind of hard to read, but it's still a great piece. Join us more often.
MCM - Great bud, lol, love the candle. How is the school going for you my friend?
Oblio - It's great to be around again, It's been a difficult last couple months for me, but I'm sure I'm ready to roll with this again. The goatee, it's gone :D Great job bud.
Andrew - I don't know what to say. You've been the inspiration behind all of this. A year ago I was one novice artist coming across this site and dropping my jaw in bewilderment at your SP's. I still do it now, and I'm still a novice artist by all respects, but I feel a little bit wiser now to my abilities. This has especially helped me grow, I think more so than I would have without it, and I thank you for it. Keep rocking on my friend.
