Hello CA,
First off, I think you should start at the last page. I have gotten so much better than when I started this thread, that I get embarrassed looking at my first pages...
But anyways, I haven't been coming here as much as I wanted. I do stop by to check out some inspirational works though. And of course there are some amazing illustrations here!! One day, I hope to be as good as any of the featured artists... One Day...
Well anyways, I finally started college and I have a new interest in drawing again! I just didn't have time before. But now, I am forced to draw, at least for my classes. YAY!!
Here are some sketches and studies that I have been doing. Please be very critical and helpful, if you are going to critique. I will use all the information (good and bad) to become better than you!! (Hopefully)

I noticed that my bodies are a little disproportionate. I tried studying the skeleton to see if that would help. Needless to say, it helped out a great deal!!

Nice Sketches man, really good stuff and good practices, you seen to learn fast!
As a question, are you sketching using ink?
Its because i think you can get a better result if you sketch with a pencil and ink over the "right lines", this way you'll have a clearer result.
Anyway, great stuff!
Keep it up!!

Yah.. Im using straight ink. I wanted to force myself into not using my shading stump. I always use my shading stump when I use a pencil. But, lets see what can happen when I use a pencil again. I am taking my family to the Zoo today. Maybe I can get some nice sketches done.

I see improvement. Keep those studies in the last few post , u surprise how much it will help u. Using ink to do some quick life drawing or studies is good. But try to use pencil when u are doing in-depth studies of anatomy and expression, so u can erase them when u get thing wrong and u can spend more time on studying it. Just remember to erase when u fell something is wrong and correct it and always ask yourself why i'm wrong and how can i make it look good.
Hope this make sense and all the best.

Carbono and Yinteck: Hey guys, I am using the pencils again. How do you like it? I will post some pen overs later. But, I am pretty happy with myself for not using the shading stump.
Dazz: Yeah, the Big Bird was pretty fun. I thought it was going to be harder than it actually was. The feathers threw me off. But, I am pretty happy with it.
These are some Concept Heads that I will be putting on my COW # 120. Hope you like.

Hey, your art's looking pretty good so far. I'd suggest drawing more skeletons to help with your anatomy, (I should do that too!), I think it would help a lot. Your first batch certainly did! Keep up the good work.

No problem man, u can use them for your ref.
They are all from HUMAN ANATOMY FOR ARTIST.
You have good render skill, you should have no problem studying complicated anatomy, it need not to be fully render. Just make sure you spend time on it so you'll fix them in your memory.
Hope to see more

I'm going to refer to the earlier anatomy studies you've made:
Watch the lengths of your torsos and hips. The heads are too big; and if you look closely at your sketch(es), the head is somehow the same length and proportion as the chest. Not the case in RL.
Stay the heck away from stylisation (the thighs are as wide as your heads, also) in your anatomy studies, and get to drawing people in public places (or get to Life Drawing Classes pronto), but WATCH for individual proportions! A lot of your females' breasts in these studies seem attached to the neck - breasts are located below the armpit and across that are of the chest, regardless of fullness/cup size.
Your other studies (colour, shading, etc.) are good, as well as the baby sketches. :) But teach yourself to LOOK and constantly compare lengths and proportions.

OMG! Yinteck! You actually returned! Thanks for the feedback. I don't think my pencils are up to my expectations.. I mean.. I have been shading like this for years.. I need to get a new grasp on tone and definition... I just didn't know what to do...
Well I kind of know. I want to draw from live figures now.. I want to so badly.. But, I don't have time in my day to go to a cafe or anything... I guess I always have my own body to draw from. Next up, a mirror.

sodAp
September 11th, 2008, 04:13 PM
Loving the portrait, I agree with JTown however, you need to push up the contrast.
My main advice would be about your linework. Try not to use more than 1 line for the same "statement". That means not breaking your lines so much and not overlaping lines that don't add new meaning. You can use more than 1 line to describe the same contour, as contours are always moving in real life (we see in stereo) and that can look great. But making almost paralalel lines, or many lines that end up shaping a big fat but broken line doesn't look as good. If you do that because you see the line is wrong and you need to place another one next to it to make the form bigger or smaller, or whatever, you could fix that by starting soft and subtle and pushing harder with your pencil as you are more confident of what's in the paper. You can also do that with your ball pen by holding it more horizontal as the flow of ink will be smaller.

Hey - Thanks for dropping by my SB :) Wow, I see a lot of improvement going on here! You've been getting great advice - a quote I've always found good for the mental side of drawing from life is 'draw what you see - not what you think you see!'
in response to the last self portrait - it's really very good with a lot of life in there too! Just need to bring in the the deeper shadows and brighter highlights and other than that just draw draw draw!
keep it up!

In general, the arms on your figures are too thick. The torsos are also very rounded. I'm not sure if it's a style choice or what. Keep up the anatomy study and tonal work. Keep posting.

Gliederpuppe - Wow so poetic. You are using an interpreter aren't you. Something like Babelfish.net? Either way THanks for the comment. I know what you are saying ;)
thespianmonsalvo - Hey thanks for the crits man! You were the only one to point out that I draw big arms. I didn't even realize it, until you said it. I will always continue practicing my tonal and anatomy studies... Unfortunately, those are harder than I thought it would be. But, the stomachs are stylized... I was told not to stylize when I am studying, but I just don't like the tummies on these models, and references.. I like a little roundness to them. But, if it is really throwing people off, then I might as well not do that anymore..
This is for a mentoring class, that I am doing.

I'm trying to find something constructive that hasn't been pointed out haha

The human skull tends to flatten out on the top fairly quickly
I noticed it here more than the others

I'm glad you switched to pencil. Pens are kind of limited drawing tools.
Definite improvement over the earlier stuff. Your rendering is very good. One thing I would suggest is studying the skull and other bones in the body.
You're on the right track.

Gliederpuppe - Its always nice to know that anybody would think that a critique of mine is a good one! You are very welcome :D But, can you be more specific about the eyes? I don't know what looks bad about it :(
I had a bad drawing session last night.. 3hrs of sleep + Serious Boredom + Hunger = Not in the mood to draw. But I tried anyways.. How else will I learn how to persevere?
More studies on the skull. I didn't finish the bottom left pic. I just wanted to move on. Then I had fun with the cartoon characters.
I tried to put my studies into practical use. So, I drew a face. Although the features are pretty horrible, I do like the way the frame looks.
SaiVix
October 5th, 2008, 09:30 AM
So... I was thinking of how to make my skulls more proportionate. All I had in hand was the George Bridgman book. The skulls that he drew looked all alike. And I really wanted to compare to other skulls. I remember looking at other skulls and seeing a huge difference with what I was drawing. Anyways.. I decided to trace the shape of a Victoria Secret's Model's Head. The result was shocking to me.
It didn't look like anything that George Bridgman did. I traced the frame of the head (I had to guess the top of the skull - the pictures were off the pages). Then I decided to put in the major bones. It turned out that Victoria secret models don't have the skulls of early 1920's drawings.
Then, I decided to stick with the skull that I just drew. I practiced with tones. And, I am very pleased with what I got. I think that I will get to photo realism, pretty soon. I really need to focus on life drawings...

hey man!
Just keep at it and keep studying :D Nice progress in here so far. Also, keep in mind your lines. Try not to go over them as much. Less scratchy lines. Use your whole arm to draw as well, it makes it easier and its much much better. For example you're drawing the skull, you can try to make the round top in one or two lines. It's kinda like trying to get your line right the first or second maybe even third time.
Just keeping going man! you'll get there !

On october 1 post, I love the way you did the punch (on the 15 panel), reminds me of the classic boxing Anime Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow's Joe / Rocky Joe) Great one.
Its good to see you practicing your shading along your anatomy. My only advice is to try to make an side darker than the other, most of your shadings tend to make both sides equally "lit".
I found out that some of your anatomy problems on the face could be easily solved using helping lines and "classic proportion rules", most of your figures eyes tend to be too close to each other.
Anyway man, keep doing the studies because you're improving everyday!
Cheers!!!

Hey - you're really progressing! :painting: just one quick thing is to watch out for lop-sided features on your faces as most of your head studies recently have one eye higher than the other (try flipping the piece of paper over and holding it up to the light to see - it's amazing sometimes how a pic you're totally happy with will look all over the place if you reverse it!)
Keep up the great work!
(p.s. don't worry I will be doing more studies from life soon - just gotta deal with a lot of stuff right now!)

October 17th, 2008, 10:33 AM
Dished - Thank you so much!! You have helped me immensely with your advice. I have been thnking hard about my lines, every time that I draw now. I make myself use my whole arm, when I draw sketches. But, I tend to go back to my scratchiness. Old habits die hard... live free!
Carbono - AHahah. I haven't seen that movie. I haven't been watching anime as much as I want to, though.. I really want to.. I have been watching Barney, and more recently, Elmo in Grouchland. Having a kid really dampens your video selection... :D
a la bapsi - Thanks for the encouraging words :))
The7Artist7 - Yeah I do see the problem with my eyes.. And whats worst is that I do flip my drawings over, even around and in the air sometimes. But, Every time I try to fix it, the other eye looks disproportionate. Anyways, I have been trying to keep it right the first time, but it always messes up. I was beginning to think that I should just draw that upper part of my faces.
(p.s. I was just joking about my last post on your page. No matter what you put on, I still enjoy it very much. I was duped, but I was still happy.)
Bleh.. I haven't been really in the drawing mood, as of late. I did manage to get some pages of practices done though. I am pretty happy with them. Thanks for all your help guys :D

Hey SaiVix - Glad you enjoy so much of my work - with the uneven eyes you can simply try drawing a very light guideline mark around or across the face where the eyes go before putting in the detail
here is an example of how uniform your uneven drawing is sometimes:
see how all I've done is to skew the whole pic and everything is pretty well aligned now!

Holy crap! Your sketches have really tightened up. :D The style you're using on the faces remind me of that European-Manga style (a mix of realism and pretty highlights :3)... It'd be nice if you could study people in real life, and diversify your faces: play with ages, body shapes, proportions, ugliness (!), with wrinkles, or birthmarks. ;) Diversify!! :D

You really are doing a nice job and improving. Keep it up. I just wanted to point out some stuff you could easily study and improve even more. :)
You're tending to draw the eyes a bit too far apart. As a general rule of thumb (and it does vary from person to person) there is one eye width between the eyes when looking at the face straight on. On this guy for example: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=482204&stc=1&d=1223128516 The eyes are much farther apart than one eye width.
Also you're tending to draw arms and legs too thick and lacking in shape. Take some time just to look at an arm or leg and you'll realized how much shape there is to them. It's easy to get caught up in thinking of them as just big tubes, but there's a lot of structure in those tubes.

Hey guys.. Um.. i haven't been posting much. I haven't been drawing much either.. I got robbed a few weeks ago. They got about $1k worth of stuff.
I was getting ready for work and went downstairs to warm up my car. I put my backpack in the car and started it up. Went upstairs to get into my uniform. 15 minutes later, I come back to the car. I noticed that my backpack was not there. I figured that I might've put it in the trunk, like i sometimes do. Well when I got to work, I couldn't find my backpack. I went back home to see if I even took it with me downstairs. Its not at home. So some punkass took it out of my car.
Along with it are my drawing journals and wacom tablet. They got my clearwire modem, drawing pencils, phone charger, wireless mouse, Left 4 Dead video game, mirror and a bunk of other things that I use to pass time by.
Anyways, I just dont feel like doing anything creative at the moment. I want to find the mother fucker and break a bone for every day that I was without my things... Anyways.. yeah i dont think I will be updating much. I have to save up money to buy drawing pencils and such again... but right now, my money is going towards my family... So yeah.. I will post when I have the money to post...

some great improvement happening in here, good work!
I think what you need to do more is drawing from life and from reference. You tightened your portraits you drew up pretty nicely, but they all still have that generic, comic-like look. Lifedrawing will help you to see how the features are placed in the face and it will help you to see how light behaves on different planes of the face. Just dig deeper into what there is to discover in the things you draw. you've done the right steps now it's time to level up :)

SaiVix, thanks for dropping by my world, just thought I'd drop in and see whats going on over here. Looking good, I'd say a great improvement from the beginning. You're learning to work with light really well. I'd agree with Gloominati and set yourself back up with reference drawing and studying anatomy; we can all benefit from that. Dueces bro!

Great stuff here!
I love all the portrait and face studies.
You have a nice, smooth style towards everything.
Definitely work on anatomy a bit more .. and I think you need a little more value in your shading, everything seems a little flat. Try doing with really dark dark's and really light light's .. If that makes sense?
Anyhow, great stuff!

Grafguy - Thanks for the advice. I will do more angles. I just dont feel like I got the frontal down packed yet. Everytime I wanna do a different angle, I end up hating it :(
Lyno - Thanks man!! I love faces. If anything, I would like to be a portrait artist.
Gloominati - I totally agree with everything you said. All the drawings that I make up are all too cartoonish for my taste. But, no matter how I try to fix it, it happens. I will try more reference drawings though. I am really worried about copyright infringements though. That is my biggest drawback in referencing.
warlock1234 - Yah man. Gloom's message was the bombshizzle. heheh. As for color. I just bought myself a set of Prismacolor. But, I haven't done anything with them yet. I'm sure there will some color pics on my next posting.
Zenobia - Hey! Yeah. I totally agree about the anatomy studies. I will put more of my time into that than I already am. I just got a hold of one of Andy Loomis's book. Although I have many digital copies of them, I can't really bring those anywhere. So, with this hardcopy, I think I will be showing a bit more improvements. As for the tones, I press really hard to get the darkest color in my drawings. I don't know what it is, but the scanned pix really does not do my drawings justice, in this department.
pradip ingale - That is one of the best advices ever! thanks man.

Update
1. Details to Blanket
2. Details to Hands
3. Darken Hair
4. Rounded forehead (thanks Spiralingvortex)
Other than that, I couldn't force myself to blindly adjust this any further. If there are any more advices, they would be very much appreciated.

Hey, went through your sketchbook real quick and I'm impressed how much you improved in such a short time, don't give up the spirit now and keep on it!
It's good that you are using the pencil as a tool since it obviously suits you better. However I would like to say, unlike someone else posted here, that a biro is not necessarily more limited in its use. I believe it's more who is using it in what way. Compare my pencil with my biro drawings and you will agree that the biro is my tool. I make a huge mess with a pencil and can't seem to get enough contrast. My point here is that you might want to pick up the biro again one day, just to see what it gives.
Another tip is that you might want to try a larger format. I haven't seen this tip here yet since the short time I'm here, but I know it helps a hell lot for me. Reason being is that you need to use your entire arm to draw a line. In that way these lines over lines over lines etc. won't turn up on your page so easily.
I also read somewhere that you like to draw girls that are well formed. You can't believe how happy I am to hear that. I just love those nice curves, makes it so sexy! Drawing teachers told me that my style is similar to the style of "Robert Crumb". He also likes the curvy woman. I have to say that I am not a huge fan of his use of lines, but the final drawings are pretty odd..

You are coming along nicely, Draco makes a lot of sense in his post take heed to it. Your last couple of posts seem kind of lifeless, were they drawn from a picture? Try and practice your observational skills more and draw from life.

Thanks for dropping by my sb. Much appreciated :D To answer the question abt changing ur thread title, just click on edit for ur first post, then "Go Advanced" button. Then u can change the title of the post which is also the title of the thread :)
Great improvement btw. Ur figure tend towards stylization. Not sure if thats what u want but i feel it is better to get the normal proportion right in the early learning phase then push it for creative result when u want to in the future. Life drawing, studying from anatomy books, drawing figure from life (cafes drawing) are great means to improve ur figure proportion skills. Keep it up dude !

Hi there!
I was reading your December post... Argh. I would die if I was robbed like that. I can't believe they took your journals too! I think I have this idiotic "good thief" image in my head that does not consist with reality at all.
Your icon is imprinted in my memory but I don't recall if I saw your sketchbook yet.
This (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=682731&stc=1&d=1243518489) is beautiful soft rendering. The pearls look like pearls and the satin looks like satin.
I have no advice to add from what others said. I'm also very tempted to make a drawing look good and to forget that all that I have to learn so I understand things, is more important right now. That baby drawing is lovely, but don't just make a finished picture of him, "dissect" what you see. Try to see the baby's head anatomy, the perspective of the box where his head is at, the volumes and planes, etc.

1. I do want to get back into using the Biros. I am just at the moment in my life where I am reformatting my way of drawing. I wanted to start of from scratch. After I feel that I accomplish my goal in Pencils, I will start using the Biro again. I can't wait though! I have all these new ideas for it too. I wrote it down just in case I forget.
2. I totally agree with you about drawing on larger paper. I just recently bought a Bristol Board book. Its like 14" x 17". I will draw on that, after I finish with a drawing that I am currently in. This is also part of my renewed studies that I am forcing myself to do. I had it planned out. Good catch though. I think only 1 other person suggested this to me.
3. Heheheh I love girls. They way they look. The way they act. The way they smell. They way they feel... They are truly the most beautiful of all the animals on this world. Most of my inspiration comes from the females that I know and love.
Eugie
Yah. The picture of my lil baby and "Girl in Pearls" were referenced from pictures. It took me a long time to figure out what you meant by "lifeless". I was thinking, "Man... I really thought they look life like." But, I think you mean that they are just "there" rather than "being there". I agree with you (if that's what you mean). I will try to incorporate more dynamics in my future posts.
Mydrako
Bleh.. Yeah my figures do have a stylization to them. I was trying to do them from my head, rather than from observation. I have been trying to get time to draw people, while im out. But, it seems like everytime I'm out, my baby wants me to play with him or fetch him the toys, food, utensils, attentions that he throws on the ground. I never have time to myself, when I go out. When I do have time, I promise that I will draw from the people around me. Even if they are only there for 30seconds.

1. yah... I look forward to the day that I meet the Thief.... Oh how I look forward to it. I have been refining my Tai Chi for that very occasion. ....
2. I use my icon in all of my internet blogs; Here, Deviantart, Steam, Aim, Yahoo, Gmail, Hentai BBS, YouTube, and other various internet sites. Maybe you have seen my comments on those pages.
3. Yah.. I loved that picture of the "Girl in Pearls". I was hoping people would comment more on that picture. But, alas, they did not. I was so proud of doing that too. It took a whole lot of concentration and planning to get that drawing out. I am so glad that you like it!!!
4. Thanks for your advices. I will absorb your words and HadouKen it onto all my future drawings.
lambd4
yay!!! I am so glad that you like it!! :)
And without further ado. Here are some things that I have been working on.
1. No Reference Heads
2. I tried to draw Sephiroth as a human. My GF really wants a 3-some with him
3. This will be my last update to the Khavi pic. I want to frame this and give it to the Baby Mamma. She says its perfect already. I just darkened the darks. Thanks for all the suggestions though! They really helped me think outside the box that I am trying to get out of. All of the suggestions will help me further my skills on future pics.
4. I have been asked to do a color pic. This will be my attempt at it. The first pic is a Sketch of a referenced pic from the Summer's Victoria's Secret Magazine. The second pic is a wash of the medium tone. I will be doing the first part of the coloring tonight. I can't wait! :)

Hey sai I was referring particularly to post 78, what I meant by that is (and of course I could be totally wrong) it seems you were too busy trying to render it correctly instead of trying to capture their expression and mood. Emotion plays a big job in art itself so it's always important to pay heed to that. Anyhow, I love your newest update it seems you actually figured out what I meant anyways on your own great!

Oh!! No.. The only refrenced pic was this

and this
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=682731&stc=1&d=1243518489
The others were just from my head. And I totally agree that their expressions were blah. My main focus was to get the planes down. But, its not going so well. So, for future posts, I will be doing 3 reference pics for every 1 imaginary pic.

Great stuff. Looking on the first page, I was going to suggest that you look for a fuller distribution of values-- a lot of the first images sit somewhere in the middle-- but on the later images it looks like you've corrected that.
The victoria's secret girl looks like she has a very slight mustache. Other than that she looks great. Could push the values on that a bit.

I just have some Anatomy studies. I really really need to do more of these. I will plan on doing a session a night. 1 reference / 3 practices
Strela - Yah I hate my first pages.. I would like to just delete them all, but that would be fake. As for the mustache, it wont be there for long. I am positive that my coloring would correct itself. The values and tones will show up, when I get more hours in that piece. Thanks for stopping by though. :)

Hey SaiVix, thanks a lot for stopping through my sketchbook thread! You're words are waaaaaaaaaaay to kind for my stuff! Good work here and good to see that you're getting back into it more. You've got a cute kid there as well! I'm sure you feel my pain trying to raise kids as well as work and still find time to do your art! That last SP painting in my thread, my son was in my lap the whole time I did it! I don't usually do that, but I just felt like I had to push something out there regardless of his insistence on trying to suck on the brush, it had just been too long!
You've had some good advice and critiques so far, so I don't have much to add to that...but you noticed I'm an anatomy dude, so of course I think you should work on that as much as possible from books and life when you can. Other than that just keep on going and draw all the time even if you can only get in 5 minutes some days, then do a five minute study of your hand or something! (I need to take my own advice more too, jeesh)
peace!
Edit: You added the anatomy studies just as I was replying, good work!

Good Loomis studies.
If I could offer a suggestion on how to practice that stuff-- do the Loomis skeletons about 2" high, right next to each other on a paper set to "landscape mode." I don't know if you're doing more than that number in a session but you might try doing more of them. The fact that they're side by side means that you have a constant height reference and you can go fast. At least that's what I've been doing and it seems to be helping. I'm also doing Posemaniacs-- do an hour of the 30 second sketches and you'll know you've been drawing-- but I'm skeptical as to how much that helps. On the other hand it's pen mileage and I seem to be seeing some improvement on them.
I'm a big believer in drills and breaking things down into pieces, then making exercises out of the pieces.

Good for you, Jacob :-)
Btw, keep up the good work with the anatomy studies, try to vary your sources, and often change book, ref and such, that'll give you a more accurate vision of the body, and will help you realize what's true and what's derived from the artist's own vision.. e.g., I don't think those thin cartoon-skeleton-like bodies will help you much, as they don't show the relation between each part of the body, plus the shoulders and hips are really vague, part of them depict bones, part muscles, it lacks clarity.
Keep it up, check other books!

Thanks foe the advice Panshi!! I'm actually going to try to have a sketch a day. I just need to find the time to do it. I was hoping to just draw from pose maniacs. I am in search of a nice portrait site, so I can practice from there (something like pose maniacs). But, I will probably just search on DeviantArt and find some nice subjects.
