I got a link to this forum from a friend that thought that I need some seriouse competition in order to improve myself. I must said I was deeply impressed by the work all around here and I'm glad I had found this place.
I beg the understanding of you, kind moderators for my lack of attachements but it looks like I cannot post any yet. Why, is a mistery to me. So, if there is someone who can enlighten me about the way I can attach my work here, I would be most gratefull.

Hey guys.
First you have to have an image somewhere located on the net. Maybe on your own website....
Next on that website right click on the image and pull up properties. In the properties, under general you'll see the image address. Copy the whole string.
Then, post a new thread or reply to a thread. Fill in your reply etc, and at the end of your reply, click on the IMG button just above the place your typing your reply. A user promp will appear, keep the http highlighted and just paste the string you copied above
The string will appear in your reply box with img before and after the string. Click the preview reply button. If it works out you'll see your reply followed by the image. If it looks right click submit reply.
Your done. I had to figure it out on my own too, but hope this helps. :)

Here is another elf, still from Tolkien's world. This time from Silmarillion: Ecthelion, captain of the High Guards, Lord of the Fontain. Made this one for rage, a buddy of mine, to model him for an awsome scene in whitch he is fighting against the Lord of Balrogs.

Av I am loving the style man, amazing pencil work, I am sure I am wrong but there is a smudge halo around the first one, maybe it is just style on your part I'm not sure but I can't see it on the other ones. Maybe a quick clean up?
Anyhoo great work, if you don't color you should see if someone on the boards would be up for it.

Nomed9, its pencil, just pencil. A a little tweaking done in Photoshop.
Presence, you are right, maybe a better clean up would have make it look better. But I'm a hurried kind of man and I must admit I didn't done my best. And I'll take your advice, I don't have time to color them but maybe there is someone who can.

nikia, the first ones were pretty easy done (when you do things you like everything seems easy). "The Sleep of the Gargoyle" 'tho took me about 12 hours of streight work. I felt that if I stop I will neer work on it again, so I did stop just to eat.
Oblio, I know what you mean, I focus so hardly on the details I forget things I should focus on (like illumination or focus point). Thanks for the advice.
And are you really everywhere? Then we should build you a church! :D
Grave, I'll do my best.
jilted_one, never worked with charcoal, what you see here is just simple HB 0,5 mechanical pencil.

i'll say.. put your ass at work and start a new one - try a different approach too - a different theme also.

Killer Napkins, the tools are just tools. I use only a mechanical pencil with HB 0,5 tip. Not a fancy tool. The fancy tool is your mind - and your hand. Think at paper like is your lover. There are times you need to touch it hard and there are times you have to touch it soft. And when neither works, use your finger:D ... to smudge.
Oblio, LOL, my ass is already working my friend! But there is a tone of things to do and I must establish priorities. Anyhow, thanx for the ideea, be sure I'll do that.

November 13th, 2003, 01:32 AM
As was mentioned before, the detail is fabulous.
Pay more attention to the lighting though. The direction of the light, and where the shadows are falling. You have great control of the tones, but right now the light is coming from all sorts of random directions. You have "form shadows" but there are no shadows really caused by the light, and the various objects are not casting shadows anywhere.
I also noticed in the Gargoyle picture, the buildings look rather flat. This can be fixed both with developing your eye for perspective, as well as the lighting issues I mentioned before.
Still, on the whole, it is all very strong work. Keep posting

I'm going to make an assumption and suggest that most of what you know about anatomy comes from photos in magazines and not from life drawing. The Barbarian guy in the dungeon pic is composed of nice details of anatomy that are very well rendered, but the connections between the details is poor. Try drawing his whole body first, looselly, to get his proportions correct and then add the muscles.
Also remember that with detail, sometimes less is more. For this reason, I much prefer the Rune/magician character. His physicality and appearance is much more realistic. Very nice. Do more like that one.

December 10th, 2003, 05:01 PM
Your assumption is corect. There aren't many persons that could serve me as a model for some types of characters. Thanks for the crits, I deserve them; I tend to loose myself in details and you're not the first to pull my ears for it. I'll have to do something about it. I'm glad Rune liked you aldo the concept belongs to the good people at illuminatorsguild. I'll try to do my best and learn from my mistakes and your advices.

I'm glad to see you're still hard at work! The color in this new one is very nice, the concept and the energy are great. You have a hell of a lot of potential, your eye and hand skills are already very well developed, the main thing you need to learn is the skeleton. You know the anatomy of the muscles, but it's the skeleton that gives the figure most of it's form. Spend some time drawing the bones of the shoulder and then take a second look at how this creature's sword arm joins the torso.

your dwarven warrior is awesome man, I printed it out and hung it on a wall. The details on his axes make me want to draw dwarven axes all day :)

Thanks for the kind comment and don't get yourself down. Nobody start by being great. And I told you this convinced that I have a long way to go until I'll be great. If I'll ever be. Self criticism and hard work over all will bring to you some satisfactions and a mountain of other trails and tribulations. So get yourself a butt of iron (needed for long hours at the work table) and a steel jaw (needed when criticism is getting worst) and face the life.
As for your request I must tell you I haven't worked with the pencil lately, but I promis that, as soon as I do, I'll get a capture of the event and I'll post it.

As for the girl, those were meant to be artificial muscle fibers connected to the real muscles to help move the limbs. In my story this is a girl that not long ago was paralised. The bionic implants restaured her health. fae, who's not a Tolkien fan? Its impossible not to love that man and his vision!
Thanks all for the input. See ya soon!

Ah yes, when looking at it that way the bionic girl is much more appealing. Like a beautiful woman and a symbolic gesture of the power of technology in one beautiful piece.
I'm not sure about everyone else but I love good dwarfs (and yours are the best) because they are so nordic and stout. The beards, the array of symbols, the glorious armor and weapons that only dwarves are capable of ;) Dwarfs are my favorite of the Tolkien races, they aren't purposely comedic but they are amusing. Yet serious when needed to be.
I typically never draw tolkienesque work, unless you count the single Gnome I drew :)

I'm sure you will be as great as you want in animation, the secret is to never stop trying to do it your way. While learninng from others ofcourse. I'm really glad that you have enjoyed my gallery. I'm glad to have such a response on this guys. Its my third digital painting and the background is not so original. I was lacking the inspiration so a took a long tour into Geiger and StarGate art. Consider this some sort of mixture between these two.
As for my place of work KingOfChaos, aldo I'm honored by such consideration, I'll have to dissapoint you. I'm just a humble freelancer, dragging my life from today to tomorrow, always hopping to get a fat pay check. And, in the digital work I'm almost an infant.

Avatar,
I took the time to look at all your pieces you posted here and you have alot of talent and a great imagination. I do prefer your pencils and traditional mediums because you capture more texture and detail with those then the digital.
I hope what I'm about to tell you will be helpful since I infrequently give crits.
The one important thing is I like yourself I love to render and I love detail however I find when I am consumed with either or I lose the overall impact and structure of the whole image. It is very crucial that along with drawing from your imagination that you do life studies and draw from refrence as much as possible. It will do 3 things for you
1-It will help you see cast shadows and structure.
2- it help with your human anatomy and creatures.
3-you will be able to simulate real-world lighting from any direction you want.
The goblin you have is beautifully rendered and detailed.great imagination..however if you added some cast shadows to his form and blended some of the areas where his muscles meet it will look even more realistic. Also some texture on his skin some wrinkles and little bumps might really add to him. I know you have been to the workshop so most of what I'm saying you probably heard there.
Digital painting-
I recomend that if your going to do digital paintings..scan one of your colored pencil drawings..create a seperate layer and paint over that but allowing your underdrawing to show through. You will get the nice texture of your drawing and plus the digital paint over, I've used this technique many times.
Thats it for now I wish you could go to Austin so I can explain more. I hope this is helpful to you and others you have alot of potential.

Thanks a lot for the usefull adivice and believe me, I do tookk to the heart that workshop. Its a pitty 'tho I can't post my latest work yet because all of this are ante-workshop drawings. That workshop really changed my life. After I got home I felt like Brad Pitt (aldo I'm not looking a bit like him :D) when Tom Cruise turned him vampire in "Interview with a Vampire). The world all around me was suddenly full of colors and new shapes. Everything moved!
As for my digital, the girl in the mirror is but my third work. I still have years until I will master the wacom as I should.
Thanks again for you input and be sure I will work on my drawing skills. As long as I live.

Avatar,
Your work here really shows good imagination and determination to finish a piece. '
I agree with TARGETE regarding "detail". Something my art school instructors have driven into my skull is this: pick one spot on your drawing you want people to look at. The eyes or the hand or the gun, whatever. Put all of your detail into that spot. Then reduce the detail everywhere else. Make use of silhouette for things going back, like the rear leg or the far hand. Don't feel like you have to put maximum detail into every corner of your piece. It's OK to have 2nd and 3rd reads in your art, but they have to be clearly less important than the first read (focal point).
Best comment I got in a classroom critique: the human eye can only focus on a spot the size of a quarter, make your focal point decision based on that idea.

Poland, thanks for the good advice; I know you are right but is kind of hard for me to adjust at the needs of others just because I have a panoramic view. I still need a focal point but I easyly observe all the things around me. Tha's why the maniacal need for details.

Yeah that's cool, man, I didn't think you'd used the reference, just thought they had some cool dragon stuff over there that's worth checking out. As for the image, I think you've shown us too much of the dragon, resulting in it being kind of busy. Don't be afraid to cast some areas in deep shadow, and render some areas less thoroughly than others in order focus the viewer's eye more. speaking more specifically now, the dragon's wings and limbs just blend in with one another right now and it's really tough to distinguish them from one another. Casting some shadows underneath the wing could help with this. Btw, this color palette is much improved from your first version, very nice.

Threw you five bones I think this is pretty strong work ::: my only crit would be that you are working to hard ::: over rendering ::: you need to help the viewer ::: when you throw this much detail at them they don't know where to focus ::: creates an uncomfortable relationship with your audience.

rothgar, the squirrel was meant as a proportion reference but yes, I guess it adds some coolness to the drawing, isn't it?:)
vigostar, I do have a knack for creatures. I wish I could post more but I'm a freelancer and comissions come first because they are my only source of income. I have an entire univers swirling inside my mind.
mentler, I understand your point and you are not the first to tell me about it. The thing is that I don't want my drawings to get a quick glance, copied into computer and forgot. It hapened to the most beautiful drawings (I have my own folder with drawings gathered around the net). I want my viewers to look twice, trice at my drawing and every time to notice a little detail they didn't saw. Every drawing took me hours, and I cannot bear the thought my work is valued just in a few seconds, then forgot as the head turns towards another thing.

Nice work Avatar!
You certainly have a capacity for detail, can't do it myself.
I know what you mean about wanting people to slow down and explore the details.
I've taken in your three years of progress posts in ten minuets.
Not that said details aren't captivating, they are (especially the cockactrice piece).
But i've come to believe that the best we can hope for in this medium, to make it ,i guess, economical, is to create the impression of detail, rather than render it explicity. At least, not all the time.
I think of detail as a sum of a body of work, a vocabulary of visual ideas and the mechanics of relationships between characters.
I think we've gotta accept that other people don't always want to give as much time to our ideas as we give to them ourselves. :I

Gameoflines, I agree with you. Slowly I come to realize the importance of illussion in a painting and a drawing, yet I'm still inlove with the story every character can tell with its details. All the trinckets,, all the things speak about the personality of the character. And aldo I know people can get dizzy because of the level of detail, its a thing I might abandon in time, but not right now:D
