So it can't just be hairless? it would have to have been shaved hairless to qualify? is this as wide open as I am imagining? It can shave something it self or be shaved?

in case anyone is having a creative block, remember that hair isn't the only thing that can be shaved.

Hmmm...interesting. Does it have to be an active participant in the shaving process, or can it be like a sheep and be shaved (well...sheared) by a person or other species?

This will be my first weekly activity. I'm in! Got my idea, did some studies, workin' on something epic. This should be fun!

The creature doesn't need to be the active part, so sheep is ok (if it wouldn't exist already, muha).

just finished a quick sketch of an idea i had.
essentially it uses its massive front teeth to shave wood off trees which it uses to insulate its burrow for the winter months. the face is kind of naked mole rat-esque and it's intentionally front-heavy which helps it shave off the bark, it just kind of rests its head and pushes.
it'd love to hear (read) some critiques if anyone has any because i think it's lacking something... i just don't know what.

Speaking of which, I think this would be a good time to recommend this series of short films about animal reproduction (bugs!) by Isabella Rossellini called GREEN PORNO:

WIP - BarberBug: This insect lives a similar life to a flea but is usually not noticed by the host animal unless there is a large population living on it. This insect feeds on the animals hair and has razor sharp limb to harvest/shave the animals hair. It also has a large jaw to scoop up large amounts of the hair which is instantly digested by powerful digestive acids. This fast burning of food allows it to mow through large areas of fur. In large numbers they can strip an animal bare but is usually not a problem as they only spawn in spring so the animal can shed heat better in time for summer.

Right, so I got my concept done, did some thumbnails and studies and I'm going the route of a massive (I mean seriously huge) ocean-dwelling creature that is the last remaining source of fresh water on earth. How?? It grows its own ice, glaciers really, surround by little chunks that break off into icebergs. The creatures will be so massive and critical to human survival that its species will be colonized (temporarily of course) by humans, to shave and harvest ice from its top side as it drifts about the seas. I've settled with thumbnail B4, a nice wide flat creature with frozen tendrils that catch the currents. It'll have glacial crests and be quite the environment in itself.

What do you guys think?? Here are the quick studies:

'kay, so work is piling up and I might not get to finish, but I thought I would motivate myself to try by posting my quick and dirty thumbnail:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a379/neorepto/shaveitbaby.jpg

The concept is like this... this little lady has a very hairy belly, chest and inner legs, because that's the nest where she lays her spawn when they are born. In order to feed they have travel down her belly chewing threw (shaving) the hair on her... udders...

In other words I am being rather literal: Shave it baby!

The creature grows excessive hair in the worst places, so in order to thrive it needs to be shaved.

Hehe hey jaecks I have kinda similar idea too :( allthough mines involving gigantic males using their furr as hosts for colonies of females, talk about a harem.. the females have to "shave" away furr to reach the male reproduction organs, and to make space for a nest in which they will live and give birth to offspring.

I love sheep, so I'm eager to take part in this with a sheep-like critter!

Problem; I do draw (for fun) but I'm a far cry from a fine art artist, but I can take part with just the concept if I find an artist partner, right?

Even if I'm coming in a bit late for this one (I imagine most of the pieces are well on their way), how would I take part in the future?

Do I just type a concept in here (accompanied with a sketch of my ideas or not) and hope one artist thinks "sure" or am I meant to choose and contact an artist directly?

Oh well. Either way, I'd have gone with something like this:

The Apocalypse sheep (Ovis ursula, literally sheep bear) is found on the derelict planet of Earth. Evidence of the area suggests that, whilst the planet was still lush, "sheep" were a domesticated animal. However, following the series of events that transformed this planet into a harsher territory, the creatures evolved into animals more apt at surviving the toxic areas, with what little vegetation there is in the plane areas being high in toxins that most of Earth's inhabitants still find fatal.

Apocalypse sheep have distinctive curling horns (a feature that helped identify them as "sheep"). These large, bull-like, animals have thick skulls, especially on the males, and very powerfully built front quarters with necks that can withstand the head taking substantial hits head-on. They have exceptional eyesight which they use to keep a look out over their flat habitat. Sheep will viciously defend their boarders, and have been known to give chase from up to a mile away, the leader of the flock (normally the oldest present, whichever gender) giving the sign to attack and the whole herd then charging the unfortunate creature, which must quickly retreat to thicker cover if it wishes to survive.

These sheep are dangerous, and the surviving humans (homo sapiens, the once dominant race of the planet, now largely unheard of apart from with intergalactic traders of the area who deal in cheaper goods) mostly avoid this species. However, the "wool" (a human term for the type of fur produced) provided is important the human's lives, providing bedding, fuel, and is a main part in some intergalactic biodegradable products (as a cheap and surprisingly sturdy substance, apparently more useful than the original "wool" sheep produced).

As no human weapons can safely kill the sheep (and Earth is not allowed to purchase such weapons), humans instead commissioned the creation of a creature they call the Shaver ant (Arthropod product #378:697:55328). Although resembling Earth "ants" in some ways this creature is closer related to their arachnids. It has strong jaws, sharp ridges on its legs, and an instinct to collect nesting material. Whilst collecting this material it will build it into a nest, using a glue like substance to hold it together and onto its back, forming a "shell" that it will then return to its colony with.

The humans are given several Shaver ant queens which are then cared for around the edge of Apocalypse sheep territory. Though the "wool" of the larger animals is too tough for the Shaver ants, the "lambs" are left almost bare. This does little to affect the sheep themselves, as only the adults tend to make use of the armour-like protection offered by the thick coats of matted hair. The Shaver ants also collect shed hair, and the hair of decaying dead sheep, particularly useful if the sheep has died far into sheep territory.

The humans are still paying off their debt for the commission of the Shaver ant, as well as the annual fees to replace their queens (under intergalactic law primitive planets are not allowed to have altered species capable of breeding) but the wool profits are enough to keep their species alive, and hopefully will teach them the importance of intergalactic trade.

Thank you for purchasing today's article from Arthropod Commissioners Limited, get our next issue for information on our new offers and the commission topic of Boat centipedes.

Don't be shy SaiVix. I'm also new to concept art and this will be my first try at COW too. Had a look at your sketch. Concept sounds good but from the sketch it's hard to say how you plan to realize it. Can only say; full frontal is dangerous.

WIP:
Some bloodsucker who feeds on exteme hairy creatures. Armed with a foam gland and saw like legs, it softens the hair and cut it off to force it's way down to the skin.

One question about zanzans entry:

Can you or anyone else explain me where the shave part is in the concept? I am kinda confused, since i don't see anything shave related. I didn't want to post in the finals thread to keep it clean.

How much more needs to be done before this is good enough to enter? Changed my concept because the other one's description was too long and seemed quite dull.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/9e0111e5d9.jpg

And yes, I know I fail at texture/colouring, I'm working on that...

Here's the description that goes with it:

Shigeons are the only feathered animal that requires shaving. Originally commissioned for genetic engineering by Ms Peep, these creatures are a hybrid of pigeons and sheep. They possess characteristics of both animals, for example; the wool placing/length tends to come from the sheep. Their unique homing ability cannot, as with pigeons, be based mostly on landmarks as shigeons do not fly. They cannot naturally fly due to their weight and lack of wings, and tend not to use airplanes as they're very environmentally aware.

In 98% of cases of shigeons not returning it seems to be the case that they suspect they would be eaten. This heightened intelligence has lead some people to speculate that mouse genes may have also been spliced in (resulting in hyper intelligence), but there is no evidence for this. Either way, shigeons are not ideal meat creatures and better kept for feather production or as pets.

As they no long yeild wool or mutton, the shigeons could be viewed as a failed project, but they do meet the requirements first requested, and chances are that if you leave your shigeon alone it will come home (flitting its tail behind it).

...just for the record my entry also in this thread...

http://www.kidomatix.com/ca/cow/cow_120_shaveitbaby_foz.jpg

Artist: Fozzybar

Concept: Af Robin
When the moonlight hits the grounds of the Somalian velds the Af Robins love dance starts. Standing in the moonlight the sexually mature males try to impress the females with their courtship. While dancing they throw off glittering scales, which they produce, from their wings and feathers.

The mature male Af Robins have a bush-like accumulation of feathers on the top of their heads. After mating they use it as a nest for the eggs and the offspring. The female bird is in charge of bringing small insects for the chicks. Additionally the chicks eat from time to time a part of their fathers 'head-bush' (how biologists call the nest), which has eupeptic effects. When they grow up and have eaten up nearly the total nest, the chicks have no possibilities anymore to stay on their fathers head, that's also the time when they are fully fledged and they have to fly away and leave their parents. The offspring shaves their fathers "hair" while growing up. Nothing we wouldn't know from the human world.

The advantage of the male Af Robins weird appearance is that the father bird can always fly away with their offspring when there is danger near, which you can't with a conventional nest.

Rumors are that this little bird inspired musical artists of the 60s-70s to come up with the known hair cuts and cloths in that era. Did you know that Jimi Hendrix made a trip to Somalia, shortly before he became famous?
