Here's the site, props to the guy who runs it:

http://animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com/

The "realism" in some of these backgrounds is astounding (check out the bird's eye view of London from Peter Pan, the white rabbit's house interior panels from A.I.Wonderland and Eyvinde Earle's forest backgrounds from Sleeping Beauty).

So what do you think? Any favorites? Anyone here draw background panels?

These are all pretty nice but I think my favorite would be in Akira, those really stood out when I took the time to notice them.

If you really like the stuff in peter pan and alice, you should check out Mary Blair, she was a concept artist on both of those productions, and her work was a huuuge influence on Alice in Wonderland.

Ooh thanks for the link! Love seeing work like this, especially from early Disney.

Hmm some of my favorite background work would have to be from Samurai Jack. I must say that Genndy and his crew reaaaallly know how to make backgrounds lol, the shapes and the colors in them are just amazing. Everytime I watch an episode I get blown away (it is, of course, one of my favorite animated shows so ;) ). Here's a link to some backgrounds by a couple of the artists (big thanks to them for putting these up): http://madaboutcartoons.blogspot.com/2007/07/samurai-jack.html

"Don't think of them as backgrounds, they're environments."
-Scott McCloud

Nice link for the old Disney backgrounds. I also liked the simplicity of the Bambi BGs. Sometimes they were nothing more than splashes of color but your mind recognizes them as a forest, sky, sunset, etc.

The Samurai Jack link is also epic win! I'd like to add:

http://louromano.blogspot.com/

Scroll down to see some of Lou Romano's color scripts and backgrounds for the Powerpuff Girls. Awesome...

Batman: The Animated Series had some gorgeous backdrops as well...

And that McCloud quote is spot on. :)

A shame that most of these glorious paintings stay on screen for a few seconds.

Studio Ghibli also does some very nice colourfull backgrounds.
You can view some from Spirited Away here.

Armand Serrano is a enviromental designer for animation.
His blog: http://www.armandserrano.blogspot.com/
Check out his drawings for Lilo and Stitch, they're beautifull!

The ones in Akira allways blew my mind, the attention to detail is just incredible.

rubbadub, those for those links. The Studio Ghibli work had me speechless for a while as did Serrano's dense forest pieces.

It's amazing how they can turn something so simple like a sidewalk, a frikkin rock, or a book lying on a table into a thing of beauty that you can stare at for hours.

Hey does anyone know if and how i can change the title of this thread to 'animation backgrounds'?

The more links added, the cooler this thread is getting. This could be a good hub for background or layout artists to draw inspiration or just check some prime work.

Thanks in advance.

*sigh* I remember Solid Serenade! One of my favorite Tom and Jerry episodes. Plus the song is catchy, too. Though I've never found out who sung it.
"I got a gal who's always late, EV-RY time we have a DATE! But I love 'er, I'm gonna ask her. Is you is or is you ain't my babay... baba-poo-day-day-didi!"

Thought I'd link to a few seriously informative and maybe even crucial articles for anyone daring to enter the realm of BG/matte painting:

Sweet stuff!

And Hans Bacher is back with a new blog! I think it's relevant enough to link in this thread :)
