I'm really quite new to even attempting to create concept art and although it's a vague question: Where does one start when they're learning to create the types of work that I see in these forums? Where would be a good place to begin my artistic journey and learn techniques, etc.?

Any help is very much appreciated and these forums are great! Thank you!

Poke around the Tutorials and References forums. Use the "search" link. Take a look at what people are doing in the Sketchbook, Critique Center and Work in Progress areas. Draw from life and observation.

Start by learning your foundations
Draw from life
draw from reference
draw everything you see
learn anatomy
study prespective
Line, value, tone, Everything
But remeber to keep it fun and also create from your mind

If drawing people is your thing, pick up books by
Andrew Loomis
Vilppu
Bridgeman
Great anatomy info, and basic drawing practice. And most can be found online.

*gets up on soapbox*

You know what the amazing thing is? In all the years this site has been running, nobody has ever asked that question before. EVER. What are the chances?

Hey man.. well that is a broad question. You would get wayy better answers by showing an example of your art. Have your ever drawn before?

Thank you all for the responses and great links.

To biggjoee5790: I have drawn before but nothing near as good as what I've seen on here. And I don't just mean how absolutely great the pieces on here are, but in terms of perspective and scale and everything like that. Most of what I've done are simple disproportionate napkin doodles and sketches.

Ok ok I see what you mean.. Well lilnebos advice was good.. Get your basics down. Draw from life as much as you can. Learn about line, value, perspective, anatomy, etc. Download the Andrew Loomis books, check out Glenn Vilppu, George Bridgman. Do some searches through the forums for good books. Other people can give you good advice to help you get going

Personaly I think it's better to forget guides and references now, they reduce your creative expression and artistic excitement, First you need to expand your creativity and learn how to express it by practice, try painting and play with colors, feel the forms and learn to express your emotions with colors...in simple, learn to have fun with art...

Personaly I think it's better to forget realism at first, just practice and find your style...

After you feel comfort and ready, enjoy tutorials and guides to learn techniques...

and again, Personaly I think it's better to forget drawing, try painting, choose big brush, and Play!...painting boost your creativity and give you new ideas in random chaotic patterns...also reduce your fear of clear white canvas...

This is what I done
