goran and prepsage - I really don't want to meet your creatures in the dark.. not even in the daytime. :) hehe
and I love Quixotic's creature! It's kind of cute~ xD

The pencil sketch took about an hour.. maybe longer. And I shouldn't have used the dodge and burn tool - it was unnecessary. :/

Funnyface: class! I love it!
goran: gruesomely awesome. love the sick colors.
hamsta: he's only got 4 fingers? guess thats ok for a freak
rencelaw: pretty cool!
tunauniverse: lol, I love the pink bandages
prepsage: aaarrghhh. best dsg entry here again, man that's hot
EDIT: fgorgot to say I loved Quixotic's idea with the actual barrel! lol that's cool!
Here's mine..not so happy with it, tried to cram too much into one so didnt focus on anything in particular and it all looks a bit euhmm..yeah. Still it's fun to play around with lighting. :D

Great job Hunger, but the face and arms are overly detailed compared to the rest of his body. Try to keep things in even detail as you work, that way it looks good in terms of composition whether you finish or not :) Wonderful lighting and overall design though.

well here we go....new to CA, (joined 2 days back) and I am sticking to my word of joining a lot of these projects to learn and grow.
My first DSG...and I am experiencing the same feelings as everyone who's ever been new here/ I didn't view the thread before I started...so I haven't seen any of the other pieces yet.
I've been drawing with photoshop for about 10 days so I am really green.
Is there a time limit on these? (or a target amount of time you should spend?)
thx.

you have to upload the image on an image host somewhere...like imageshack, just look it up in google. there's lots of them. Then in your post you click the little icon on top with the landscape, enter the url of the image et voila!
if you still have problems let us know.

funnyface, i like your creature, its fleshiness adds to the freakiness. also somehow those tiny limbs flailing creeps the shit out of me more than the gnashing teeth :>
sudsy, that's a good angle for scaring the crap out of your audience! i'd work more to create a sense of mass to the limbs of your monster, though. right now, it looks very 2d.
chaosrocks, the expression of your creature made me laugh. he seems quite benevolent, somehow. i like the spikey little teeth sticking on his upper jaw. i assume, somehow that the orange thinger is not his tongue, rather a tail of some unfortunate little animal it just ate. REALLY FREAKING ME OUT : D. should work more on it.
hamsta, he seems very pro-wrestler gone mutant... : D
goran, something about your monster ooze with malice. it's very cool. i like the scythelimbs off his shoulders.
rencelaw, your idea is great. the many legs remind me of an insect. very freaky. i like the plate-thing you've got going there.
tunauniverse, hahaha, cute wrestling pants. great belt. pink really takes off the scariness off this guy :>
brett, tough lil dude. reminds me of a spacepig monster from the star wars universe. i like his stoutness. but i feel like petting him more then running away from him...
howie, i feel scratchy just looking at it... lol. should give it a background to put its size to perspective. right now it seems less a monster, more of a flea / tick. i like the hairiness though. so effective in evoking distasteful feelings.
blackthorn, he looks like a shy demon, his pose seems more apologetic than hunched. i like the idea though. the face is hell creepy.
quixotic, hahahaha, cute pun! i also like the almost bumbling expression on your guy there. he seems like he came from a pirate-parody story.
prepsage, woaaaaaaaaaah, you always blow me away with your awesome DSGs! i really like the ambience there, as well as the monster design! the small beady yellow eyes really make the monster look very vicious, not to mention the jaw design and those gnashing teeth! i love it! <3
agatha, your lil guy's kinda adorable. he seems as if he just woke up and hungry.
hamorhage, great setting. the dead chick, half mauled and aghast at the foreground is very cool. the rolling lamp sets the lighting source very well. and the backlight from the window at the monster's back illuminate his deformed body very well. the baby head sticking out is awesome creepy too ... lol. and i like those hollow hollow eyes.
peg, i love your picture. the motions captured in it is too cool. looks as if it's a moment-defining freeze-frame in a point of time in a story. :> really liking it. the smile on the monster's face is just
killasandra, a very solid start! (and welcome to the DSG) he looks like a pup of a monster :>
Sir, awesome picture! i like his jackal-like head. liking how you shade his monstrous body. it's surreal and shiny in the freaky way. the drools look slightly static. i like the bg there, as well. it gives the picture a very nice ambience.
burrito, love your creepy monster. its got that absolutely evil smile of a monster who has done a lot of harm in its life. i like the sort-of transparent-ness of its body too. very cool.
android, your guy's just too cute. it reminds me of a koala gone postal... :> his left hand is grabbing a branch off a tree which is set in the bg. this destroys any sense of perspective in the picture for me. if the limb is stretching out to the back to grab the branch, the size of the hand should be smaller than its other hands in the picture.
maldrin, your idea is very strange and unsettling. but there's something appealing about it. the very oddly shaped limbs remind me of amputations. there's something quite abstract in your work. i like it.
hungerartist, wow. great picture! love the design and the render!! i like how it really seems as if his tail is a balancing limb for the bulk of his heavy torso / upper part of body. the legs also look very solid. i also like the sharp stabby limbs. this guy's not made for anything else but grievous bodily harm! i also like the texture, and the stripeys. great work! LOVE IT.
tzimtzum, good start for your first DSG! usually people spend around an hour or two for every picture. your monster's got quite a good start. he really can use some definition. but i quite like him as is, too, ... for some reasons ... he reminds me of a slimy sea monster that will come out to eat drowning people. i like his green fleshiness. should really work more on it.
vigilandus, good entry to the DSG. looks like its a monster off a game design. the pincers are great : D and i like his happy smile : D

Hunger_Artist wow solid.
FunnyFace cool piece! I like the tail...I do sort of wish the face was a little more scary...it looks a little like a dog with droopy ears mixed with a raptor..
prepsage nice piece...I think this is my favorite digital one.
DefiledVisions cool colors...a little hard to read in spots.
Tommoy I like yours....the color work is nice and sets a great mood.
Hamorhage I like yours...still working on how to post on these threads the most efficiently...so I lost my post to you last night..yours is like a whole story...cool mood.
Munin Raven: whoa rad...for pencil only (charcoal?) this is my new fav...great job. I wish my lines were that loose.
marsc I like this/ very nice..really solid.
shalpin interesting piece...there's something about the face I like...sort of Cheshire cat-like.
everyone else great work too...it's hard to comment on all..

here's a pencil sketch i did at work (really should actually do some work one day...)
anyway, her name is Bessie
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f77/akanaer/sketchbook/C500374.jpg
this species can be found all over idaho, working in the corn fields
they are peaceful herbivores that eat only corn
the many scythes are used to harvest corn, whilst the mandibles are used to pick corn kernels out of their teeth
they make great pets, love kids and are as friendly and loyal as labrador
in modern days, due to the rising costs of petrol that have been ridden and used to replace tractors
they also act as great scarecrows
as always, crits are greatly appreciated
cheers :)

wow, so many entries in this one!
burrito: i love them textures on the main body, his mouth is so creepy too.
hunger artist: lovely work, thats the kind work i'd like to see myself doing.
tzim-tzum: there's not a lot to it, but it's so cool...evrey geiger-esque. the blurry effect really adds to it's fearsomeness.
marsc: yeah, your drawings are just class! there's something about them, the way you draw the human figure reminds me in this one of japanese proint artist amano.
It's dreamlike even though it's a monster.
rockett: I dont think the lineart makes it silly at all, its a nice clean crisp design, I love that mouth too.
mitze: nice skills with the pencils! Very dark and scary.
great distance: good first try, i like the chill brushstrokes.
sequential 76: haha, now that's such a funny lil' fella
tommoy: that's class, nice play of light!
munin raven: I love that pencildrawing.
064: nice work, im not a big fan of the dodge tool work in the background, but i like the creature.

Hamorhage You said it yourself - lack of focus.
I think if you tune down the blue light and push the contrast with the lamp light, it would be much more dramatic.
Something about the hardness of the edges doesn't seem right, and requires more attention.
Marsc Haha, nice. Gotta love that female torso.
The space on the left works great composition wise.
Anatomy has some minor issues, the right arms of the creature (our left) don't seem quite right.

woah, these are all really sweet entries! I'm loving it. good work everyone (:
Blackthorn: I love the face of your monster, but his pose makes him seem a bit timid for an abomination. be nice to see some varied line weight too!
Quixotic: I like it (and I love that someone did the barrel chested pun. it needed to be done) and the perspective looks cool, but it'd be nice to see more shading, and a bit darker in certain areas (under the chin for example, and making that shading on his barrel darker than it is)
marsc: delicious lines! digging the use of negative space too
Saurus: I love the more saturated colours and bulging mass of the body, but the angle of his torso and bottom half don't match up too well
DefiledVisions: sicksick colours. it really jumps out at me. your lines look pretty slick too
mine took about 45 minutes along with the COMEDY LIMBS APPROACH! he's not much of an abomination though. I kind of want to give him a cuddle
