Painter 7 Question

When you add a new layer in Painter 7, and you paint on it, how do you prevent your colors from mixing with white? Even when I set the bleed to zero, I still get the white mixing into the color.

I think there is an option in the layers menu to try of picking up colors from other layers. Also don't you want to change the resat not the bleed to stop your current color mixing into the background not the bleed. I am a complete noob when it comes to painter (I really need to learn how to use it better) so I could be wrong.
