Blade and Soul: a threat to all MMOs?

This game looks friggin awesome. It's an MMO done by the same company that made lineage2. It may not be the death of all mmos but it looks friggin awesome. Anyway, here's the vid:

Innovation? Nah. Outstanding gameplay? Fuhgeddaboutit.


Big, pretty environments? Of course! What else would we spend our entire budget on?

Hmm they make decent quality games, but I dunno if it'll be what pulls the sword out of the stone. If the screens are anything like in-game, then I'll definitely give it a try. Why not?

Honestly this doesn't look good to me at all. I mean, it looks good, but it doesn't look good. Chingwa said essentially what I wanted to say word for word.. NCSoft fell so hard with Tabula Rasa, seems they are reverting back to what they do best (fantasy), but the universe seems like nothing I'd get too excited about.

But seriously, way too anime-esque for me. Characters wearing silly costumes and wielding silly weapons beating the hell out of each other trying to prove who has TEH ULTIMATE POWARS.

I gave up trying to claim an MMORPG to be a "threat" since WoW came out. WoW is seemingly immortal, has been for 4 years, and doesn't seem like it's going to be threatened by anything but another MMO from Blizzard.

That said, I also gave up judging an MMO by its trailers. MMOs can hide a ton of flaws that trailers cannot show, moreso than other types of games. Balance is probably the top priority for me. Another one is developer contribution. For instance, I bought into the hype of Age of Conan just to find out that a) the game is outrageously out of balance and b) the developers release stupid patches just to screw up the balance even more.

Blade and Soul looks pretty good but will it play well? Will it be continually supported by passionate and intelligent developers? Will it have balanced classes, not ones which can two-shot me? Those tend to be the bigger questions for MMOs than what meets the eye.

IMO the more people you're able to play the game with, the more the game loses its soul. The last thing I wasn't to hear when I'm trying to immerse myself in a setting or get involved in a story is the commentary of everyone else I'm sharing my experience with.

This just looks like another MMO. Another MMO I'll never play.

It looks nice, but I have a feeling that the gimics would wear off quickly. I am very happy, however, to see you guys and the Blade and Soul website referring to it as an MMO and not a MMORPG. I hope this is a trend that continues for these games that suck out your soul through your wallet. THERE IS NO ROLEPLAYING IN WORLD OF WARCRAFT. Or any of those games for that matter. It's idiots and leet speak. Show me a man that claims there is role playing on those games and I will show you a man that doesnt know what THACO is.

what always bothered me in MMO's was that there was almost no visible interaction with characters and environment. Yeah, you could push some silly buttons and see how much damage you did, and pick up some plants with big flashing icons above 'em, but I never saw a MMO where you could form decent combo's, actually DODGE attacks (instead of some random spell that increased the probability that the word would pop up above your head) , and see your foes fly away after a big explosion. If this MMO can fulfill its promising trailer, there's no doubt that it can be ranked as a WOW-beater on my list.

Art direction is pretty and all, but i'd like to see some story to back it all up. Right now all it's got is panties.

There is some role playing on some servers in WoW, and a fairly large amount in some other games. Certainly not comparable to tabletop games, but it does exist.
