Sketch time! The upper left looked a little bare...

The developers tell everyone the helmet is absolutely necessary for balance and it will not hinder the aerodynamics in any way. Really, they just want to see how many people they can get to wear it.

The tail flaps too :D

Ok, I tried... it's not much... and it's not in any way related to a hummingbird... haha

Hi, I'm newly registered but I just had to jump in on DSG, it' s one of my favorite forums to lurk in. :)

I love to see the different takes on this. I saw the topic but once I started to draw it somehow went from hummingbird to more bumblebee. Oh well..

Had about an hour on the ferry and must have restarted 3 or 4 times before I found a composition I could stand, so the painting is incomplete while the idea is there.

Hey, I'm also new, and this is my first DSG, as well as my first art post.

I did this in mspaint, and it took about 20 minutes or so. (i'm a slow worker.)
I normally draw on paper, but I don't have a scanner at the moment. :/

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g188/Nevei/hummingbird.jpg
Also, I know my art style is really anime-esque - I'm sorry, I can't help it. It's just the way I draw. >_<

yoitisi, i really like your picture, the colours. oooh, so thick and fluid. and liking the design, too. very nice. its awesome that you did that in an hour. can feel her lifting off the ground. too cool.

parsakoira, the wings remind me of stapled brooms. i like the reflection on the plane's nose!

chaosrocks, there's something about your picture that reminds me of a child's first remote-control toy. it's unadulterated fun. probably should work more on it, there's some issues with anatomy...

bombchu, ahahahahah. awesome helmet.

kenjitsu, i like your picture a lot. even though its not very hummingbirdish. great design on the armor and wings. should work more on it, would like to see it with lighting and colours.

scodo, liking the idea that it's an actual hummingbird device, not just the wings. please continue to work on it!

eullogy, nice sketch. he really looks like he's taking a break from flying.

hempHyll, cute. but probably you should spend more than 20 minutes on picture. and saying that you are stuck with your anime style is making me slightly sad :<

dingo, welcome to DSG. nice picture. i like the idea that they refuel using their long beak. should clean up some of the lines. the shapes are there, but some of your multiple lines are confusing the basic figures.

marsc: man I love the way you draw bodies. Flawless! Love those elegant hands. nice touch to blend in the texture, makes it look pro. Yoitsi and parsakoira: awesome job you both, I'll comment more in depth when I get some time. Got myself a copy of Soul Calibur on the 360 today :D

Went to a more traditional media, charcoal pencils. I'll try to do more with traditional media from now on. Obviously I'm a bit out of practice with it! I even found myself trying to hi "Ctrl-Z" to "Undo" a bad mistake instead of reaching for my eraser!

This image is horrendous, but I don't have any more time to work on it.
Interesting topic though. Thought I'd throw it in. It's cool to see everyone's different approach to "personal flapping wing flying device"

Parsakoira: The dynamics of your picture are simply amazing! I love the blur of the wings flapping.

yoitisi: The feathers and colors on the wings are gorgeous

Scodo: I like the way the flier almost looks like a marionette hanging from the strings. I would love to see a finished product of the sometime!

dingo: That mask being a refueler is a great idea. Just like a hummingbird

marsc: Simply gorgeous! Great proportions and look for the mask!

prepsage: I love the way it is almost like a motorcycle for the air. Single person and open for freedom! The colors are perfect for it!

So late as promised:
-Parsakoira: Maybe you got the idea wrong, but I still love the image. Quite a few things seem wrong though, love the wings are not on the smae angle..I think it would quickly sink that way :D
Aswell the wheels dont seem in the right perspective. but as far as eciting image, it has 10/10.
chaosrocks: I like the "inventor" type of design
yoitsi: beautifully rendered image. Funny how everyone adds the hummingbird masks.
bombchu: c'mon after the last topics beautifull entry you cant just give us a 5 minute sketch :D
A bit more effort! ;)
funnyface: I like the one in the top corner, the other guy seems like he's never gonna lift of wuith such small wings :D
HempHyll: nice but that just looks like a boy with wings. Where's the device?
marsc: i said it already, love it.
guggemmaneuver: that is a cool drawing! I love the style!
prepsage: you are the man. You rock with colors. no critique.
Zaphid: I quite like the old school poster look of it.
hamsta: less good then normal. The character seems pasted on the bg, maybe a shadow would help...
sudsy: quite nice. I think you're the only one who interpreted the topic fully, as in just displaying the machine rather then with a character.
alleluia: quite nice sketch, just pay attention to symmetry of your drawings, the wings look off.
Tuna Universe: if she's resting her feet on the wings while flapping, it sure is gonna be bumpy!
android27: liking the mask, funny pose aswell.

Now as for my own work, i did it straight into painterX which I only started using and to be honest I am quite lost with what brushes to use. Its a bit of an experiment so, I couldnt find small brushes for detail work so it's rather an impression. hope you can make out the character :D

I had an idea I liked then things went really bad. at last I made something I am willing to show, not without any shame though... I rushed the background and I know I have very vague ideas about lighting...

the new invention, a flapping wing flying device seemed to be a failure at first. its flying ability was smaller than its alternatives, its durabitily and maintenance made it unliked in practical use, but the machanism's little weight, the manoeuvrability and its aesthetics made this device really popular for performancers and bright-colored "Hummingbird" wings were a must for every big party for a while.

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/shiNIN666/gfx/shinin_hummingbird.jpg

EDIT: the wings has a relatively small mechanism, motor and stuff (I'm not into mechanics, but my English is even worse in this field) that follows the curves of the back of its user. I wished to show it in my picture, but at the end I failed/forgot/whatever.

I'm very tired, just a few words about the other works...

my favs are marsc's beautiful sketch and prepsage's entry.
prepsage: that hummingbird-like device is very nice to look at, I like its design a lot :) I feel harmony looking at the picture.

I like Hamsta's idea (using the wings for collecting food just like the bird does ;)) and I was most surprised when I looked at guggemmaneuver's peculiar device... ;)

Guggem, i like your picture. It looks like it comes off a retro-future illustration book. Very cool. Please finish it.

Prepsage, another awesome work. Love the suspended-hover feel created by the blurry wings. The design of the bike is also great. Definitely look like a hummingbird aeromachine! As usual, my favourite out of the bunch :>

Zaphid, looks like a poster. Specially with the doll doing the V thing with fingers. Im not clear if it is flying upwards or standing on its very sharp pointy legs....

Hamsta, hahahahah. Great idea, making it a flying fruit-picker. Very hummingbirdish. The size of the tree and the placement of figure against bg makes it look almost as if he does not really need to fly to reach those fruits though? I’d expand the picture vertically a bit, to establish height of tree.

Sudsy, i like your entry! It really looks like a flying bike, ready to take off!

Alleluia, your picture is strange. The man’s naked, and yet his pose indicate gentlemanliness. I like the idea that the helmet and the wings are connected to the man by way of spinal device.

Tunauniverse, the device reminds me of a fish more than a hummingbird. I like her helmet. It’s fab.

Android, i like the simplicity of your picture. The device is connected to his facemask is cool. Makes me think he’d fly to heights where oxygen is scarce.

Hamorhage, aaaaaaaaah painter. I’ve just recently started to use it too. It’s very difficult to use. Specially for detailing. I just cant figure it out at the moment. Liking the pose a lot. She really looks like she’s just landing and is steadying herself. The wings looks super-fast, and the armour design is great.

Digitaldust, cool design for the wings. I’d guess it’d be spinning like a helicopter’s wing when it’s on. Very nice. I am not big on the creature design though. His bone-skinny legs freak me out .... hehehe...

ShiNIN, aaaaaaarrgh, i love your little snippet that gives the picture so much narrative : D awesome. They really look like they are having a ball!

Lechri, i like perspective. Very nice. He seems concentrating to how to maneuver his wings.

Brett, awesome sketch. The wings really seem like flapping furiously. And he looks as if he’s about to hurl a rock at someone down below :>

I didn't see a new DS go up so I went back one and did this. I am keeping myself tight to the time limit and I am going to try and do one every night. So 90 minutes in and out. I really need to find a good tutorial here on drawing in PS or Corel...I don't really know what I am doing.

:)

It's fun though. Not that this really affected the final image but we have hummingbirds in my backyard all the time...there's this really cool red one and I imagined him.

Originally the legs were going to be wearing bowl-shaped gravity-correcting shoes, but for some reason i ditched that for the bone-stilts.

Hamorhage It looks like a high-tech ballet costume for swan lake.
Doesn't look like it would fly.
The colors, while warm and rich, also give a heavy feeling.

The arms are hard to figure out, and look like part of the wings.

shiNIN Ballet from you too?
A life drawing a day keeps the harsh crit away.

I'm sorry, but there are issues with anatomy, perspective, lighting, composition...

I know it's not nice to hear, but the only thing stopping you is yourself.
I'm also not saying I'm better than you. I've got plenty of issues myself, and should work harder.

Marsc Hot.
Great female form, and you lead the eye beautifully, from the detailed head, downwards.
Love the lineart, and the subtle highlights/shadows.

Arms might be a little stiff, but that's about all I can say.

Hamsta: oh I have no problems with honest crits, I'm well aware my lighting and perspective skills are about zero, I'm very week at composition too and I have an eye for the anatomy (and my only studies were about human anatomy), so I usually see my flaws, I just can't draw :)
I didn't do dsg entries for a while, I planned to learn the basics before I return, but life is more exciting with them.
sorry you all have to look at my very unskilled drawings, but DSG is very important in my art life, I became serious after I met these topics. I'm slow, I know.
"I know it's not nice to hear, but the only thing stopping you is yourself."
I know it and it IS nice to know. I'm glad it depends on me, myself is a field I have some power... hopefully :) it must be that way...
