Very real,lifelike.What is soft chavant?

DarkEden
July 29th, 2008, 02:43 PM
Thank you.
chavant is a none-sulfured plasteline. It exists in soft medium and hard hardness

beautiful work! will you be doing the body as well? also did you cast this?

Maddmaestro:afroboy:

DarkEden

I won't make the body because it requiered too much money for me, the turtle is about 30 inch long. And for a test of life-size sculpture I prefer to keep simple. And I will cast the head with resin plaster

love the neck wrinkles/ texture :) wish I didn't hate the smell of chavant so much now, this makes me want to try it again!

I love the little details on the scales, very cool. But I can't help but wonder what it would look like with a blue, red, orange or purple bandana.

Wow... I've been working on a turtle similar to this lately, and this is AWESOME.

Really great job - keep it up!

Beautiful Job! Is this the Green Sea Turtle? It looks smooth like the Green ones. I just completed a baby sea turtle and posted it...I did not see your post till now! Mine is 2½ inches tall, a life size hatchling.

I absolutely love Chavant Clay, but I messed up and bought the sulphur kind, and yes it smells bad LOL...plus I cannot use silicone for casting unless I seal the clay, rendering it useless for another sculpture.

Seriously,awesome realistic study. Great job!

The skin along the throat is so rich. The way you've knocked back the texture to create a natural feeling to it is inspiring. Makes me want to play with some thick-skinned creature concepts.

Is this a personal project or a professional assignment?

Thank you for your nice comments :bashful:
It's a perosnnal project. I'm building a portfolio with other kind of stuff than my usual 54 mm miniatures.

So it is an update. I added the eye with crystal resin over acrylic paint. I made a kind of lens over the reworked plaster casting.

Hi!
I have painted my plaster casting with acrylics and pigments.
I'm pretty happy with the result, I think we cannot see that it's casted in plaster so it's cool.
I must paint the eyes and add the resin lens over it to finish the model. I hope thta you will like it.
Best regards
Rémy

You are an expert. The head seems absolutely real!! The color tonalities are perfect, and the eye is incredible, I have a lot of interest for the way in that you have gotten that the eyes seem real, I will look for the crystal resin to prove it. A thing that I have liked much of the work has been the way in that you have given the texture to the mouth. I am wanting to see more.

Oh, yes - you've nailed it now. The paint scheme here and your lens effect over the eye have created something all too real.

This is a great example of strong reference and careful technique coming together.

I believe the lens over the eye is just a cover to protect it from the paint until it is finished, Then it will be peeled off. I do mine the same way.

This is so awesome!!!! Waiting impatiently for more!

The lens will be crystal clear when glued on the turtle. There is a shot of the finished eye without the translucent eye protection that turtle have underwater.

Man, that eye is so mesmerising!! o.O The whole sculpture is so realistic, if I saw it washed up on shore on some beach I'd seriously take it for a real turtle head!! :P (I'm not sure how large you've made it tho, so the scale could give it away) Great job!! *applaud*

:) it appeared to be you :) hehe

I remember you answering some of my questions at coolmini :)

The soft chavant plastilene...that never hardens permanently, right?

You said you were casting it in resin. What happens to the original sculpt when you mold it?

Sanjay

DarkEden
September 8th, 2008, 07:58 AM
You're right about plasteline, it never cures. So I casted the head with resin plaster and the original sculpt has been melt in the oven to re-use the clay.

Phenomenal! The paint is amaaaaazing! Can you be more specific about the clear stuff you used for the eye?

DarkEden
September 12th, 2008, 04:56 PM
I use a water-clear epoxy resin. (pébéo in europe) So I made a mold to do a kind of lens like the one we have sometime on the eye. It's sanded and polished then glue with the same resin. I apply a glazing coat on the finished eye.

SoulWraith
September 13th, 2008, 03:02 PM
WOW.
You have got to sculpt and paint the rest of the turtle now! I mean, I would be happy to see you do him flipper by flipper!!!!!

I do have to ask about the plastic on his beak though...I am assuming you are making a statement about pollution since it looks as if the turtle has bitten into plastic and is crying. I really love the sculpture and paint job without the plastic, because I can see everything, but I do understand the statement made too :)

I would love to have this! Or a casting to paint myself!

Hello. I was busy with studies last months.
So I painted a casting of a sculpt I made last year. 10 inches tall
It's made form translucant epoxy then painted with acrylic inks.
I glued my hair's leg on this poor guy. The tattoo were made by masking all the face then cuttinf the pattern in the mask. Then I airbrushed the greenish color.
The eyes are simply painted with a brush.
So there are the pics. Thank you for your attention and sorry for my english, I don't pratice for ages now...

Haha. Nothing quite says, "That's my art!" like gluing your own body hair to a piece.

The eyes are what make the paint job for me. The glistening terror they beam is excellent.

I'm a fan of your miniature there. I've been playing around at 32mm myself lately and I commend the realism you've nailed at such a small scale.
