Anyone use these markers for traditional animation? How do the colors hold up? Are they good for painting backgrounds? Can you use them on acetate cels?
If so, did you find them easier to use and more cost efficient than acrylic cel paint?
Cheers,

I really don't imagine they'd work well on acetate. They can't soak in at all to the material.
If your working with cels the major thing you need is something that can bend with the acetate. Try experimenting, I say.
Just wondering though, What are you using the cels for/ shooting them with?

Markers definitely would not adhere to cels, although they might make for some interesting backgrounds if used on paper.

If you're really interested in working in a marker-y style, you could do all your final art in marker, then cut it out and paste them on cels. I did this once with watercolors, and the finished results were pretty nice. However it takes FOR-FREAKING-EVER, as you are doing the whole animation several times over- coloring it, cutting them all out, then pasting them down one at a time, with registration. :/
If you're up to it, go nuts. I'd suggest you work with cels, if you have to work under camera at all.

I love copic markers, but I usually use them primarily for concept work. I dont think they would work for coloring cells because the ink is so thin that it leaves lines where they overlap. I have used them on mylar and it makes some cool effects, but I think it would be really distracting in an animation, unless that is what you are going for.

For any kind of marker work, please please please try out some marker paper! You'll experience a world of difference. But um.. why go so lo-tech when you plan on doing an cell animation? Won't a painted background be better suited for this?

I agree. If you are wanting nice color nothing really beats paint.

copic will do just fine for the characters as it will produce more vivid colors. for the background, you could use prisma so u won't need to spend too much copic... do it in copic paper for a better result...
