Hah, nice first post, I love how she looks, really creepy and all, great feeling overall, however, I curse you! I checked on the DSG this morning and with that thought in mind, I started working on mine this afternoon and now that I'm finished and about to post, WELL.. guess what, indeed, another Red riding hood, oh wells!
Let's just hope this doesn't turn into a RRH thread :P

Both awesome entries so far. Atmosphere/attitude of Izra's is perfect. XD

I just had to look at this thread again, really curious about the entries.
Snuggles: Pft, I had a lot of anatomical problems with mine and yours is actually good, I love the cartoony style you gave it, only crit I could have is that in the 3/4's view, you would see the right side of her face too, barely though, otherwise, I'm loving the concept D:
Scodo: Holy crap the atmosphere of your Pied Piper of Hamelin is great, loved the rats following him too.
Too bad there aren't more posts yet D: keep 'em coming people~

Ok! I've decided that this will be my new strategy! I'll post my sketch first, then go back into Illustrator and finish. It's just Illustrator takes a bit to get right... and I'd like a few critiques before I do the refined version please :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/lilcutietanya/IMAGE00010001.jpg
Snow White! I drew her pretty first to figure out her clothes... but then figured I could just do a mirror imagey thing... and it'd be kinda cool? :) I might do Cinderella later :o
Edit: Mrfhglngh... Stayed up all night and did things...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/lilcutietanya/snowwhite-1.jpg
'Tis a rough, but I thought the sketch was a bit hard to figure out... so it is to help read my scribbles. I'm thinking of putting a border around each...I figure flowers for th' regular one (or maybe apples!) but Iunno for deathy. I might close her eye though... so she looks prettier XD What say ye?
Construct the criticism please~ :) but do remember it's still a little rough. Regular Snow White is pretty much done cept for shading...

Hi, I'm new here, joined the for the daily sketch thing.
I'm hoping that doing this will make me draw things that I wouldn't normally draw, and hopefully improve my skills--which are currently severely lacking. I only started drawing at the end of last year, but I was hoping that I'd be further along by now. Maybe part of why I'm not is that I kept drawing random normal stuff, and mostly male characters at that.
Sorry for defiling the forum with my sketch, but here it is:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/4493/img104bp8.png
It's an undead fairy. >.>
Critiques and comments will be highly appreciated. Delicious pie will be doled out to all who give me constructive criticism.

I noticed the rules thread said it was OK to post references and such, so I thought this might be helpful to someone. I don't know why the skin is greenish, it was like that from the start.
Posed in Daz Studio, it's the "Aiko" character.

Heart-of-the-Sun: Aw... don't be so hard on yourself =\ Part of drawing is believing! You gotta believe! (Parappa the Rapper) lol :P Even though you haven't been drawing for very long you're looking to better yourself, which is great. We're only here to share our work and help each other, not be mean and degrading. The point of this is to improve and have fun! So try not to be negative and just remember your skills are still growing :) You can only improve!
So! Reference is always super good but don't forget to draw things from real life to practice! I'm too tired to help with anatomical things but I will say I'd like to see more grossness. :o More decay and stuff all over her body and wings. Google image zombie to help inspire the deathliness :) Btw, I really like the crazy eyes and ears you've got goin' on.
Pie is delicious :o
Heart-of-the-Sun
July 26th, 2008, 02:47 AM
I was going to add a lot more grossness, but I got tired of working on the image. I just kinda got lazy and called it done. I was going to do a lot of other things, including rags and stuff. I really need to get into painting and/or coloring in Photoshop, I could do a lot better if I did.
I draw a lot from photos, but not very often from actual life, though I am always observing people and things. As far as anatomy, I know the legs are a bit shorter than they should be and that the far hand is actually bigger than the near one. Other than that, except lack of detail and generally sloppy work, I don't think it's too messed up--is it? I'd appreciate some input when you're not as tired. =)
Thanks for your advice and encouragement.

Hmm, don't know if this counts as a classic fairy tale, now that I think about it. But it was one of my favorite stories as a kid. I had to see what she looked like all zombified. :)

ok, so here for my thoughts again:
-mitze:that is one heck of a first post! Love the mood and espeically the face is very succesfull.
the left hand is quite awkward looking, and the other one holding the basket seems a bit short?
I think the upper arm is a bit too short although that's probably foresight...tricky as always.
-izra: nice work but why did the path completely stop behind her? seems like the bg dissapears into nothing too quickly.
-snuggles. clean work, dont know who it is suposed to be though..
-scodo: that's class, a creepy yet cartoony painting, whished you put up a bigger version to see.
great try at your first digi painting!
-bombchu: very impressive. that's a lot of complicated paths to draw in illustrator, must've driven you mad, but the result looks crisp and profesional.
nice work although you forgot to draw the thumb of the zombie version, the apple would fall on the ground.
-johnthebomb: very atmospheric, funny to draw a zombie version of a veggie :D
-heartofthesun, that's pretty good for a pencil sketch, though some shading would add some atmosphere for sure.
-farfetched: that's just supercool, love the simple shapes and color. brill.
-parsakoira: have u ever read stephens' king pet semetary..that's it right there, creepy!
-goran: nothing wrong with the image, great skill as always, just missing the fairy tale bit, it's almost a scene from the butcher :D Some clothes would've been cool.
-razorleaf: check your imagehost, doesnt seem to allow linking?
-plasmaernst: what story is this one? the climbing zombie is spot on, not so sure about the top one. fun idea anyway :D
-rattacat:how did you color this? Looks a bit too saturated for my taste, although it does look "sick" :D
-adina: lol, did you paste that image in the bavkground? anyway great atmosphere. the limited use of color really makes the red on the char stand out.
-hamsta: now that's a tasty backdrop, very atmospheric, and super painterly looking. For once I think this image doesnt need more definition, it's perfect in its earieness.
-gorgolean: nice skill, lol is it me or is that the cutest zombie I've seen here? His face is priceless.
-chaosrock: nice, for sucha fast sketch it nicely captured the position.
-angel2342: that reminds me of one of the older topics, cool drawing.
-marsc: perspective seems a bit wrong on that house in the background but everything is way cool, like a super creepy childrens book.
-dagreengo: surprising tot hink of robin as a zombie :D I like the way you seem to draw with ease.
-arteater: this one is a bit under-par.You're work normally always blows me aside, but this one is just average.
See once you set the bar so high, I expect to be amazed every time :)
-muleskinner: that's just amazing, I love the wooly effect and all the details. he seems to topple over a bit but lovely work!
-brett_schmidt: are these the cute bears? not so cute anymore :D
-spazizoner: is this sposed to be bigfoot? kinda cool although funny at the same time.
beelketh: lovely controlled blocks of shading, it really pulls you in. Good work.
prepsage: again i dont really know which one it is, looks like giantfoot to me :D
anyway you always mage to seem to draw a shot in the midst of something, like you can read a story from your work.
nice! I really have to work on getting more of a story in my work too.

Thank you, it was very nice of you to say something about everyone's contribution, I appreciate it.
For the record, Gulliver wasn't a giant, he was a normal human in a land of little people, and that was only one part of the story. His adventure in Lilliput just happens to be the best known part of the story.

mitze, that sent shiver down my spine! great first post for this dsg. love her expression... she's eeeeeevvvvil. (dont really want to imagine what's in the basket, either)....
izra, cute take on the red riding hood. i like her blank face, as if she's a doll of her own zombie instincts.... i noticed the arms are boney but not the legs ? and her right arm seems slightly longer than her left.
snuggles, for a skelly she manages to have all that beautiful long blonde hair intact? (without scalp?) hehehe... i like your clean colours. and her expression is gold.
scodo, awesome pic for being new to digital works! i like ambience and the rats.
bombchu, cute undead snowwhite... her decaying teeth are great...
john, really liking the eerie lighting in your picture.
heart of the sun, your pixie reminds me of undead tinkerbell... i like her eyes, so creepy. should work more on it. shading and definition of her limbs / toes...
farfetched, awesome work! great simple colours and shapes. bg is working very well. and love the simple shading / toning as well. and the mary poppins is just too adorable!
parsakoira, aaaaah, creepy puss! i like your lighting with the grey scale. it really makes the mood very disturbing for the picture.
goran, nice texturing and lighting. he seems very angry. but i get kinda hungry looking at him... lol...
plasmaernst, great picca! humorous too :> how come rapunzel's still young whilst prince already so decaying? ...lol. love your details and style, as always!
rattacat, snowwhite seems decomposing faster than her poisoned apple... its scary that she didn't manage to drag her legs out of the coffin. your colours kind of thin, probably should work more on depth and values...
adina, great simple work. love the atmosphere and the expression of red riding hood. so hilarious, yet so disturbing. love the tone and texture of the bg...
hamsta, ominous take on the red riding hood. i like the dark green, reminds me of a dream. the cape kind of reminds me of ... greengoblin cape? shape wise? and i like her walking posture, she seems.... inevitable.
gorgoleon, awwwwwww poor liliput! .... and gulliver looks half hungry and half confused. ... but more hungry.... : D
chaosrocks, sleeping beauty looks to be so much at calm, liking how you manage to convey it with very simple strokes
angel2342, big bad wolf looks still hungry.... his hindlegs are somewhat bothering me
dagreengo, hahahah, your undead robin hood is great ... with arrows all stuck to his chest... still so dashing... lol
arteater, snowwhite looks so abandoned ... and hungry... and resorting to anything she could get her hands on... lol... probably would look better with more definition and shading...
hamorhage, ....urk. your cinderella so scary! i hide from her. ... heheheh, great work on the details of the atrocity that is her undead face. i like the wildly staring eyes and the gnarling mouth...
muleskinner, my fav (already commented earlier)
brett, simple but cute. i like. bears have upgraded porridge to something more meaty... :>
spazi, ooooh your giant looks like an alien creature. i like his imposing pose.
beelketh, very dark and lovely. her hollow eyes so mystifying. and the red is very well-executed, too.
prep, love the giant's ... undead roar. it's so effective! i like composition also! run, jack, run!
sudsy, undead dwarf is undead.
shiNIN, your waking sleeping beauty is eerie and yet adorable (she looks so happy that her prince arrived)...
jtho, ugh. love your undead aladdin. his posture is very well-done. it bespeaks of the empty soul that shines out of those eyes. love the details, also.
addleheaded, your puss very villainlike. he's out to do harm, for sure. i like his eyes and pose. brrr...

Thanks for the comments!
sorry about the colors, i realize there a little slapdash. when i originally colored snow white the mix was so dull you couldn't see what was going on. I'm kinda new to coloring in photoshop- I usually either just slap acrylic to my drawings or color it in illustrator.
is it true your only supposed to work an hour on the comps? a lot of these seem more "together" than that, and my partner wanted to get in on the action, but we didnt know when the time limit was up...:lounge:

how long you work on it is up to you I suppose. The hour reccomendation is more like guidelines really. just to weed out the careless 2 minute scribbles.

Nimb- You're being too hard on yourself, just practice and youll start to groove.
I love the brushes everyone here whips up in Photoshop/Painter, but i find that its not as intuitve as just looking at the stack on your art table and picking out a real brush. When i look at the brush screen i end up either using the default brush at different thicknesses, or just whipping out my pen nibs (which i find faster)
How do you decide which ones to use so quickly, or do you have a predetermined set of brushes in mind?

wow, cool new entries :>
nimbus, is that sleeping beauty? i like the idea. she seems as if she's hiding her undeadness, to lure the prince in. should work more on it. the shading of her right breast gives me the impression that her breast is on her stomach (instead of on her chest area)...
arbor, ... nice work, can feel the sliminess and fishiness of your undead lil mermaid. the gash down her torso is just ghastly! :>
erniesthings, gosh. cute mary. she looks somewhat sorry that she's been harming her own lambs :>
dannysketch, hahahahah, love the mices. they reminds me of the brain, the grunt and the not-so-bright-yet-somewhat-good-natured combo. liking how you capture the characteristics with simple lines.
lukavi, awesome entry! i can hear her screaaaaming. gosh. so coooool. great atmospheric lighting, too. and simple but effective details / bg. looks like it comes out of a dark fairy tale illustration book. really liking it! <3

I really really really like Beelketh's. Though it looks kinda like an alien... it's still awesome! Lukavi's awesome too.

Man. I love zombies. Been a few months since my last DSG.

It's been a while, but I finally took the time out to post something. Unfortunately, there was a mishap with my hard drive, so this is the best I can do as far as finalizing my sketches.
I'm happy with how this it coming though. But I can't quite seem to get the back legs right. I asked my friend and she gave me some tips, and I did it, but it still doesn't look right. Maybe I didn't do it right.
Oh yeah, this is the beast from Beauty and the Beast

bombchu: wonderful :) a really good job! I love
lukavi: wow :) good idea, atmosphere, coloring, rendering (as far as I tell, but I like it), it would be epic if it hadn't some compositional problems (I don't know much about composition, I just sense it, but I'm pretty sure).
eiskald: I like the gingerbread figure, nicely done! yeah, zombies are fun, I just created my first completely own character and he's a zombie-like undead. DSG has influenced me :)

marsc Something about this image is making me feel it's neither here nor there... that's not telling you much, but I can't find the words.
I'll nitpick instead.
I like Hansel's devious expression, but Gretel's expression is a little blank, because her mouth isn't as defined. I like her eyes though, gives her that gaunt look.
Like the colors, especially the moon, and how it works with their heads. Like a bad acid trip or something (not that I'd know what's that like :P )
I don't like that their feet don't seem to teach the ground. You should either ground them, or levitate them higher, so I won't think it's an afterthought.
The house has a serious perspective problem, and I think that it might have worked better if it wasn't so centered.
Hamorhage Hemorrhage? A rather Disneyesqe Cinderella, as far as the dress and hair go, and I would have liked to see something a little more original.
She's an ugly one, alright. Loving the age spots, but not sure it's clear that she's undead.
Needs some work anatomy wise - legs, arms and neck aren't quite right.
Would have like to see more "pumpkin" in the carriage, to help tie it to the story.

hamsta, thanks a lot for your constructive crit : >
i feel motivated now to go back and retouch the picture. thanks very much for the tips about their feet.
and the house, someone else also had pointed out that its perspective had issues. so i will definitely try to fix that one up too.
thanks, hamsta!
(hahah, acid trips.... ;) )

>Lukavi,
Great colors, and im really gigging on those bats in the background, you capture the motion beautifully.
>Gentrifier,
its soo evil/cute! i love the mouth- it looks like the teeth are made of soggy gingerbread. The grass in the foreground needs something though, maybe a touch of definition on some of the edges?
