TEEN CHALLENGE # 50
Special round: This time we gonna make a knockout challenge. We'll have tree round till the final. Each round will be one week. After this week our 3 judges (mike correiro , dave palumbo and coldrum) will judge the entries of every group.
-The first round starts with 6 groups of 5 participants. Every group will have 2 winners. Then 12 go to the 2nd round.
-In the second round we can have 3 matches with four teens in each match and again 1 winner out of each match
-The final is going to be a 3 man match.
the judges will base their decisions on the basis of :
1. idea (out of 5 )
2. clarity of idea (out of 5)
3. quality (out of 5 )
4. style and technique (out of 5)
so 20 Points max.
match fixtures :
MATCH 1 : pokepetter vs. TZA vs. johhnythebomb vs. alex c vs. zelda geek
MATCH 2 : evil_sloth vs. sketcheth vs. shmaba vs. lewis vs. rockett
MATCH 3 : ijacobs9 vs. TLL vs. a la bapsi vs. bluefruitbowl vs. constantrequiem
MATCH 4 : ronald liu vs. originaldoive vs. jake kobrin vs. vibhas_virwani vs. paperx
MATCH 5 : goog vs. auncer vs. omerta vs. cecil vs. justin.
MATCH 6 : ethan karnopp vs. the amaranth vs. lilnebo vs. takmask vs. numlaut
Topic: We'll have 3 topics every round. You can choose one.

1. Caught (caught red handed !!!)
2. Path (long way round ...)
3. Sign (sign of life)
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
the deadline is 1st of august

sweet, i got heaps of work for uni next week ^^; but I'll try my best not to puss out :P best of luck everyone!

Awesome :D First time I've done this sort of competition, looking forward to it.
Could you elaborate on "2. long way round ..." ?
vibhas_virwani
July 25th, 2008, 10:47 AM
by the way :
just in case someone missed it , each round will last one week
so the deadline is 1st of august
and i hope no one copies , coz if anyone spots that a character pose or background etc. is copied then we might disqualify their entry ... (sorry i hope that doesnt make me evil ... but we gotta be fair )
please post your finals and works in progress here itself !!!
we will take your entries to a final burning thread and the judges will relply with the results over there !!!!
when posting your final entry please mark it as final in the post as unfinished work or WIP's will not be taken for judging
another thing , if someone may want to back out for any reason , then PLEASE say it asap as TZA would like to participate as well ,and maybe someone else too could ....
thanks

I think those subjects are up to your own interpretation; "long way round" could mean anything you want it to.
Oh man. There are awesome people in my group. Let's do this!
vibhas_virwani
July 25th, 2008, 12:47 PM
all those topics are totally open for interpretation !!! and trust me , the idea matters .... you guys are the artists , put down your own interpretations for those topics and dont worry , if u screw up the topic it will probably be mistaken for humor or a unique idea ;) ...
you could translate it literally , or like a phrase as a substitute for "the harder way " (coming from the phrase : learning something the hard way ) or add some kind of humor to it etc. its upto you ...
(sorry im not good at explaining things that well ...at least i tried ... better or worse ?? Lol , artists dont really need to be good at explaination ... they leave the explaining upto their art :) )
again , judges will not just judge ur entries on the basis of the quality of art , but on the concept and ideation as well :)
PS: yes i too think last teen standing sounds better :P maybe we could change it , TLL ? :P
cheers !!

I think those subjects are up to your own interpretation; "long way round" could mean anything you want it to.
You can't interpret something if you don't know the basic definition. I knew what it meant, but I've never heard the expression before.
I PM'd vibhas_virwani and he said that it meant the "harder road." The no shortcut, detour, or easy method to a goal or destination. :)
vibhas_virwani
July 25th, 2008, 01:52 PM
yeah , well thats one way i interpret it :)
Justin.
July 25th, 2008, 02:48 PM
To be completely blunt, I don't really like the topics... I like parts of them, but 1 word topics really leave the door alot more open than anything else, like
1. Caught
2. Path
3. Sign

Wait so everyone listed up there has 1 week for their submissions
or do the people in match one go first?
or does everyone just start because this is the first round?
xinranliu
July 25th, 2008, 04:44 PM
I'm pretty sure everyone has to submit something in the first round, then 2 winners will be chosen from each match, ending up with 12 teens standing for the second round.
Good luck to everyone. I'll do my best to surpass myself.

@ Justin.: If everyone wishes to change the topics we could do that.
Your new one-word-topics are good and they fit to the old topics. so if someone started to draw an entry (with one of the old topics) he can keep on working on his painting.

Because of the dead guy's pose it looks like he didn't struggle or even was alive before he got stabbed. The killer also have a very unnatural pose and looks stiff. Due to his expression it looks like he regrets the murder. Why does the rest of his body tell the opposite?
The composition is bad, background boring, low range of hues and why is there a shadow on the ground to the right?
(Why am I helping my enemy...)
luverly_marie
July 26th, 2008, 05:45 PM
You should study a sleeping body since you're dead your muscles aren't being used. The feet would be pointing out and leaning a bit on their sides.
The killer dude should have a little more swooping action in his pose. Sort of wild, since well, he just stabbed the guy.
I think the light should be lower and the officer should have the most. Kind of like if a police car's headlights were on high beam from behind him.
zelda_geek
July 26th, 2008, 06:29 PM
About the body, I haven't really cared about it yet, cause I just started to block in an idea. The body is not supposed to lay like that (I promise), it's just that I made a rough 3d model for reference, and I haven't changed anything yet. It's like that because I just started. I thought I'd just show my idea:) And I'm well aware of all the aweful and missing elements, but I will hopefully get better when I work on it a bit more.
I'm thinking about putting a policecar in the background and maybe some spectators.

Anyway, looking forward to see what you other guys come up with:)

I know that most of the work at conceptart.org is mostly scifi/fantasy related, but does that mean that these pieces have to be? I mean concept art is technically anything. I'm not aiming for straight up realistic (like a tuscan landscape), but something set in now more likes? without supernatural whatevers?

Hey Zelda, nice piece bro but a few perspective inconsistencies like the ground pattern not lining up with the rest of the image. Make sure you make and follow a perspective grid hardcore otherwise you get into trouble with sets you image off wierdly.

First work in progress... just a value sketch. Meant to be "a sign of life". Think it makes any sense? Also, is it too dark? My monitor is very bright, so I like to check what others can see. :^^:
http://i34.tinypic.com/any3kh.png
Another version, in an attempt to bring more attention to the 'sign of life', being the one old, decrepit, surviving creature down there. Thought about lengthening the canvas downwards to show more of him, since as it is he gets lost.

bluefruitbowl: Glad to hear the depth is perceptible, thanks! I'm really enjoying your picture so far; the colors/shading seem a bit muddy or grungy, in a way that compliments the picture quite well. So....I don't know if I'm too late or not...I assume since everyone else already posted I am? But...the Teen Challenge deadlines have always been rather vague. Take me to the final if you want or not...I'm a few hours over...and also...depending on your time zone...less...maybe even early...I think we should make some clearly defined deadline rules?
Aaanyways, I worked too much on this not to at least post it. It was a great learning experience whether or not it amounts to anything. Thank you TLL for doing this. :)

By the way. After I've seen the entries of sketcheth or Justin I just wanted to ask something.
Where do you get your brushes from? Do you create them yourself? Do you have tutorials? Or are this paintings made with normal PS brushes?
@ vibhas: It's definitely european comic stile. But I know this stile more from french comics I've read as a child (like Spirou,Gaston Marsupulami etc.

But of course you can join the normal TC as every other teen can. TC #51 is going to start in a few days or maybe a week for those guys who didn't pass the first round of this challenge.

TLL, I make my own brushes, but not alot of them. Sometimes I will see a sparth brush or a M@ brush or a Cicinimo brush and think "that's a good idea", and then I'll make my own version of it. You can never use a brush to it's full potential unless you are the one that created the brush. I only used 3 brushes.
The Round Brush,
My "gear type" brush (for the buildings and mountains)
And very loosely, a "cloud brush" on the clouds (it's easy to do clouds with the round brush though)
TLL, a good way to learn is to get Vyle's DVD from the G place. But you have to listen to him. They are there to answer a production problem. Before you use them you should understand how they work, and how to replicate them with simple brushes, because then your brushes will be ALOT more potent. They only exist to save time, and to create abstract shapes you might not be able to create on your own. You don't want the Brushes to be what defines you, you want the skill to be what defines you. (I've just seen so many people who use brushes but don't understand them, it's getting on my nerves. Some people even steal the brushes, then claim them as their own)

Thanks Justin.
Ok so what happens now?
There is still time till 11:59 today for all those who aren't finished yet. Then a group of judges is going to judge the entries (this will last maybe 1-2 days) and then we'll start round 2.

Damn you guys in my group!
vibhas_virwani: Hey dude beautiful look piece I'm really jealous of the control that you have but 30 hours! I can really see where that time went but it looks like your suffering a bit from a classic case of noodling.
Rendering out things without concentrating on creating elements or working out issues.
I'd say for next time stop yourself when you get into 400x zoom for 4 hours at a time mode, zoom out, work out what the image really needs and get to it.
With all that value, colour and edge control you displayed in that piece you could pump out some pretty bitchen stuff dude.
Anyway in answer to your email I used a sketch up base and then used painters auto paint feature on the 3d model base to get rid of the lifeless edges and it also tones the canvas like if you were painting traditionally.
Then mostly used photoshops Dry Chalk brush in dry media and the spot healing brush to "heal" any spots of value that look out of place or brush marks that look random.
Awesome dedication, I'll try rendering out a piece for 30 hours, I think my best is 8.

Lol , man all that went right over my head ... i didnt know we had a dry chalk brush :P dry media ?? , whats a heal tool ?? lol , whats noodling ?? lol , all i used here was spray brushes and ink splatter brushes and the regular round brush of photoshop 7 (i dont have photoshop cs2 ) . i need to leasn about all those tools like the heal tool , burn , dodge , sponge smudge etc.
but it took me 30 hours mainly for the reason that i had just started sketching and i didnt know what i was going to draw , so i just kept erasing and sketching till i got this :P .
and thanks , i will try ur technique as well :)

So what do we you think we should do to the puss-outs? Make fun of them? Get Davi to post their names at the top of CA so we can shame them? ;) You all have 3 and a half hours to get your entries in. It's already 12:30 here but it's only 8:30 in Hawaii...

@ ethan, It's all in good fun man, lighten up. For LMS they made puss-out posters, didn't see you ridiculing them.

something to that effect. I'm up for prodding at pussouts...so long as it's not over the top or anything, there must have been some good reason why they didn't make the deadline. :\

I think since it IS all in good fun there is no reason to ridicule anyone. I'm not upset by any means but some people may have just had a busy week y'know?
On a side note: when is this going to be judged and by whom?
vibhas_virwani
August 2nd, 2008, 11:37 AM
i think ethans right , we are just teens , we had only a week and some of us do it as a hobby . there is no point ridiculing anyone , and i think there is barely anyone who pussed out anyway ...
@ethan : by the way read the first post by TLL , i asked mike correiro , dave palumbo and coldrum to judge us and they had all accepted it .
im hoping that they will be out with the results in a couple of days , they will reply in the final thread itself .

So ridiculing someone else's plight is fair game, yet using it as an example to prove a point is uncalled for? I never said I was happy to hear about OmertA's misfortune, but rather that it simply proves my point: shit happens, and there is no need to ridicule anyone because of that.

I'm not even going to fucking argue with you anymore now that you've brought someone else in who is completely uninvolved. Personally, I don't like being used as an instrument for a childish internet argument.
