I have to jump on the bandwagon here. I really love the pizza box. I'd love to see more watercolors; you seem to have a good grasp of leaving just enough of the background in the composition of the character. I've seen watercolors that would've been done just as well with acrylic -- not fully taking advantage of the medium.
Kudos.

cool pics dude; welcome to the posting side of this. when'd you cut and dye your hair?
i think your 20.7 SP is the best one of the bunch. keep adding more and more emotion and expression in your SP's, that way you work on your pic and work on expressions (as well as have some decent variety in your SP's). keep on drawing, keep on posting dude. what do you study at uni? take care!

The have a nice style. One possible negative I can throw in the wind is that all your eyes seem to look too similar, as if you are sticking to a generic child-like model. But maybe that is your style.
Look at the difference between your digital attempt and your traditional. Push the trad as it looks much better in my opinion.

most eyes get their 'character' in my experience from the muscles around them. I love your work, but it all kind of has the same expressions for the most part...you know, the "oh my god I better not move, i'm posing" look. ;P
after a repeat look through the eyes i think i see the issue. They are all exactly open the same amount. :o As much as I hate admitting it from having studied it on myself before....that is rarely if ever true in both eyes. Some people even have one eye that is just barely lower on the upper lid than the other eye. Not really 'half shut' per se, but will be a slight bit down and creat a 'contour' around the eyeball (and this kind of thing will give it a ton of character as well). Unless in shock or fear, it's quite rare to see anyone with eyes quite that open in any given situation, especially in a 'relaxed' pose. The lower eyelid does tend to stay like you have them however (unless you are going for a Simpson's/Family Guy effect ;P ). Take a close look at what I mean in these rembrandt paintings:
Rembrandt: Self Portrait (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/rembrandt/rembrandt4.html)
Rembrandt's Mother (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/rembrandt/rembrandt189.html)

haha. no, i don't know you dude. i assumed that the first portrait girl was you. anyway, nice to see the new expressions in the new SP. one suggestion, take it or leave it: for this SP, if you used a more solid and saturated color for the closer half of the face, i think it would pop out more; as it stands right now, it looks like it's receeding, whereas it should be coming out towards the viewer. cool stuff dude, keep posting. anatomy, anatomy! nice eyes.

with bridgman, read, draw, read, draw, and then draw draw draw. draw lots from your head once youve copied some of the drawings, and use the material you have drawn to reinforce in your mind what you have read. and keep drawing. i highly recommend bridgman for his anatomy stuff. loomis, not so much, cause of his style, but that's just my opinion. i think loomis is an excellent explainer, whereas bridgman can be somewhat confusing at times. life drawing will help with identifying what is natural (bridgman also touches on different ranges of motion for body parts, which is very helpful) in poses, balance, etc. still lifes will help for rendering and shading of body parts. other than that, i got nothin. keep searching out anatomy stuff, and then draw, draw, draw. g'luck! :)

The live drawing... it is soo helpful and leads to many a good idea, and boosts confidence.
I'd suggest doing some anatomy of, well, yourself. Understand how you work. I've learned more from drawing my hands then Bridgmans narly ass things.
Keep crack a lackin. Don't forget to step out of your comfort zone. Identify something you don't usually draw and do something fun with it.

I truly prefer Andrew Loomis and his art educational books.
It's cheesy 1950s American Suburb looking, stay-at-home moms and BUY WAR BONDS dudes...

Hey Iheart!
This is a good sketchbook!
Your Bridgemann studies look awesome and you have an interesting style in
your drawings!
Actually there is not much to critique other than your last few gesture studies.
They look slightly "clumsy", and that is a result of not getting the proportions right before getting into details.
Just remember to be light handed and "fluid" in your lines, before you lay down the law on the paper :P
But like I said, not much other than that to critique, because I love your colouring and style! (And the imagination from your last photoshop pic!) :)

Hey man, nice sketchbook. I like the gestures from this last post alot, very shape and form oriented which is a great way to look at the figure in my opinion. I can also tell you've got a great understanding of form by the pen renderings as well; nice restraint on the hatching, I always get too caught up in doing it and usually over render :$ Criticism is a bit hard honestly; you're moving in a really nice direction with your studies, and this latest digi painting has a nice solidity to it. Just keep up what you're doing I guess; and also keep with the creative stuff! :) Nice work once again.

Hello! The best drawings out of your thread thus far have to be the people studies and the anatomical drawings. In the anatomy studies you show the most confident lines out of your work, and the people studies are very lively and illustrative. Great job!
The only works I was a bit iffy over (yeah, 'iffy', great grasp of English there...) are the female portraits: I'd like to see them express more emotion than being just 'neutral'. They're just pretty to look at, but in a shallow-personality Stepford wives kind of way. There are lots of girls who don't fit the ideal; reconsider your approach to these portraits and uglify them! >:D
Play around with different facial shapes, and ages - long face, square jaws, round cheeks, laughter lines, birthmarks, and so on. As most people are telling you right now, I'd like to see a combination of your strong anatomy studies and illustrative doodles combined - maybe with a female portrait? :D - and see where you go from there. You're on a good path here. :)

Hey there! Really liking the textures to your painted work. I also like your anatomy studies. Those can come in real handy! I should get to work on those, actually... and great life drawings. :3 No better way to learn, right?
In any case, on your newest update... not bad at all for one minute on each! The face I like the most is the last one -- great features and everything. they just work. On the others, especially the first, I notice the eyes looking in two different directions. The cheeks on all of them look good -- the only thing I say to watch out for are those eyes, and maybe mouths too. :3 But awesome work! Keep it up!

As you seem decided to put a great effort into this I'll do the same with my reply. First of all, just remember at all time that I think that your work is awesome, and that this are only things that I think that you can do to improve it.
The faces look pretty good, but you still have to work on them. If your drawing men for example, you could use a larger jaw (I'm talking about those three drawings).
In the painting you've get a little better (specially because it's young, and therefore has a smaller jaw, more like a woman, still some chin, wich is good). But just, remember that the jaw is not always so pointy and rounded, but sometimes it's square.
The main problem with the painting, is that the eyes are way too big. It's common for us to tend to draw the features big at the beginning (I now that you probably have some time drawing, and you do very well, but trust me that your beginning at it).
You don't seem to have the common problem of drawing the eyes to close to each other, but you are a going just a little towards the other way. Be careful of that. Also, in the space between the eyes, don't forget that the nose and the forehead very rarely merge in a stright line. If you don't know how to draw that when you're painting the head form a front view, you should only do a shadow just below the forehead, half the tone of the shadow of the upper part of the eye.
If I were you, I'd concentrate in the drawing. If you can, grab a Vilppu book (Bridgman is great, but Vilppu explains better how to work the 3d of the form). Also, try to draw the head from more POVs. I've seen some 3/4 in here that's great, but remember that you can watch the face also form above, below, and still it can be in 3/4 try to draw some of that. Concentrate for example, in drawing the nose in all those positions. Try to decompose the shape first as a polygonal primitive, and then draw it right in perspective (doesn't matter that you don't want to draw a primitive every time you draw a nose, just do it, so that you can understand the problem in a more simplified way).
Look at the nose in the drawing that says "no- certainly not". They are in front, no funny angle or anything tricky, and still, you can see that they are flat, you can notice. That's because they are shaded white, just as the forehead. If the forehead is white, and it's a straight line, and the nose is curved, then how are those two planes receiving the same light? If for example the light cames from above then it should light the nose more than almost anything in the face, along with the very top of the head, and perhaps, the protuberance where the eye browns rest, and the bone that cames out right below the eyes. Go on, touch your head and see what parts are facing upward. Se what parts are facing downward: those should be in shadows. I'm pretty sure that you know this, but start using this stuff and you'll do great.
Get into the 3d of things. When you draw the head you should know the exact shape of all of it, to what direction is it going and how sharp or smooth are the edges.
Also, don't forget the wrist when you draw hands (yours looks like as if they don't have any, and as if they came from a blob)

i can also see what you mean by the forehead/nose, i understand that the shadow above the eye is too much in comparison to that. and noses etc, ill get onto it. seriously thanks alot! :)

hey dude. for your faces, i think that there seems to be a lack of definition in structure, and that's because the planes of the face aren't well defined, mainly in the cheek and mouth area. i would suggest work on using more flat color to define the planes first, and then change values to describe the form. remember: value change equals form change. take care, dude.

hey dude, thx for the pm. you got me moving on these.
so, i drew up some stuff real quick to explain what i meant about form and value and structure. i'm posting these openly so that they can help others who come to this page as well, but if you don't want me to do that, i can just put them in links. now, i'm not an expert in this stuff (im studying it myself, so i hope that it's good).
so, here's the paintover i did of your last painted portrait, showing what i meant by defining the planes.
434972
in your original painting, you have many different values in the cheek area and the forehead. by making these uniform, it creates a plane. using different values based on the lighting situation creates different planes which will give the image dimension and form; the parts where light cannot hit will be darker, and the parts more exposed to light will be lit.
here's some illustrations of value change meaning form change. when something is a flat value, it does not appear 3d, and you cannot understand the form by looking at it. throw in some value change, and it is easier to see what the form looks like. the value describes the form. smoother, softer transitions mean a smoother and softer form change. sharper edges, sharper value changes describe abrupt form changes.
434973
434974
these are more basic things that of the type that i have been working on to practice form: mostly simple geometric shapes, and working on nailing down form so that it looks accurate. some are better than others. :bashful:

nice sketchbook, dig the style and the sketches!
For the Fat Guy, if you draw him in simple forms (cirkles, squares,...)
maybe it'll help you understand the volume. Also draw the middlelines of the forms to get an idea of where they point at.
If your goin for a frog point f view, the belly's off, you should it from below instead of from the front, the hands r to small.
Actually its hard to crit cuz i dont know from wich point f view u want it to be :p

dont know if you know the forum section, but for critiques on a specific piece you might try starting a thread and posting your here in the Critique Center (http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=59). it might be easier to get focused crits from people that can really help you not only with the specific drawing, but with the principles you can learn to apply to your next and future drawings.
for the creepy guy, it all depends on what you're going for. in terms of perspective, we're supposed to be looking at him from below, right? initially, i would say your contours don't make it seem like it. curves that you have that encircle the body (e.g. his pants waistline, the curves of his vest and his shirt, etc.) should be drawn as if seen from below, meaning that the curve will be highest in the middle and lower on the ends. light is coming from directly above or is it above and in front? cast shadows (like those from his arms cast onto his vest) should help describe form by the way they land on an object, and form shadows (those that are on objects that show where they turn from the light, consequently showing the shape of that object) should be darkest where there is no direct light and no bounced or reflected light from other objects. in the form shadow (the shaded side of an object), because there is no direct light hitting it, the only light that reaches there is reflected light, which comes from the objects around it. so, for example, the underside of the arms should have some green light that gets bounced in, which will cause his shirt there to have a greenish tint added to the shadow. the strength of the light and the reflectivity of the materials will determine how much green light will be reflected, and what other colors, if any, will be reflected there. there's a metric tonne of information about this kind of stuff in the Peer Project 2 thread (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955), as well as this website (http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm)...apparently this page is being turned into a book, which i hope to get as soon as it comes out. maybe try some studies of cylindrical objects lit from above as well. i'm out all day tomorrow, but if i have time, maybe i'll take a crack at a paintover. definitely start with the critique center, though. take care dude, and g'luck. keep working hard, cause it's paying off.

hey dude. i like the volumes that you're coming out with in your pencil drawings. as for your painting, now i don't know much about painting, but you might try first setting your color scheme, then putting down a layer of the opposite color of the dominant color in your color scheme, and then painting over top of that. supposedly it will make the colors richer by contrast and the areas that are still allowed to peek through will give your image that much more life. i'm not an expert; its something i read in one of the threads about color theory and composition. if you can find jason manley's dark elf mage tutorial, he talks about this in there (http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials/7714). g'luck dude, and if you have any crits about my stuff, feel free to let me know. i could always use a good crit. :)

check out clochette's thread. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118282&page=6) she is AWESOME at what i described, painting over contrasting colors to get a more rich color. see posts 320 (the 3rd pic), and post 331 (the house) as, to me, the best examples. you lay down the opposite color, then paint directly overtop of that. DO NOT add black at all, just paint over that color. if you want something dark, some shadows and stuff, initially lay down a dark shade of the opposite color. i hope i'm explaining it well. keep working hard dude. where's the update?! :)

SOOOOOOO much more life in this painting. yes, this is more what i mean. good job, now keep experimenting.
on a side note, i recommend checking out the virtual art academy; they have some really good instruction on drawing and painting. i myself have the composition, observation, and color packages. not TOO expensive for how much they give, and they give REALLY good and pretty expansive explanations for things.
and, i don't feel like i HAVE to help, and that you couldn't get by without me, which you definitely are more than capable of. but trying to help you solidifies some of these things in my mind that i am working out, so by helping you i'm probably helping myself more. that, and i really enjoy helping people improve in things. :) anyway, thx for not taking anything i say too harshly, and thx for being open to crits. that's definitely one thing that will help you improve tons at your art. that and lots of hard work, which you're doing, so keep it up.
also, i think i posted a link to a bunch of free art instruction e-books that Cookiedough posted in a thread somewhere. i think she has the link in her signature, so try to find it. three books i definitely recommend are "The Elements of Drawing and Perspective" (John Ruskin), "Composition" (Arthur Wesley Dow), and "Eye of the Painter" (Andrew Loomis). hope this helps. take care dude, and more more drawings. peace.

there was just no inspiration behind the project, and plus ive only just came back to this place, i could have churned out x4 the amount that i did, if i consulted everyone here haha

That last portrait is lookin pretty damn good - loads of character and life in that face! It appears as though your skin tone palette is full of only warm hues - I'd suggest throwing in a complimentary cool colour in there somewhere to make those warms really pop!

hey, thanks for dropping by the sketchbook. I hear ya, there isn't too much animation going on, but it's nice to see the occasional posts.
With the push, I think you've got good timing down. Tho the poses I dont think convey the amount of energy needed to push the box. I think by the time the box finally moves, his spine should be stretched to give a strong line of action. Here's a little example of what I mean.
Alot of progress with every post, keep it up!

hey, I took a look at the group of animations. You have a good basic walk. The spine is a little stiff though. The lift: I think his left leg should step out farther because his spine bends over enough that he would fall over without that stability. Keep updating with animations, I definitely want to see more.
The animal studies are looking great also.
Keep it up!

there was this one pencil shading tutorial (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14035) that i think would be good for you in helping to define form more. i notice you tend to shade kinda willy-nilly (i do that too, i notice), which gives (y)our objects less of that 3d-ness which we all admire. these things can also be applied to paint, which will help bring out the form through that medium as well. glad you're working hard, keep at it dude. :)

hey dude, sorry i've been away for so long. i just spent two AWESOME weeks in spain, doing and teaching art stuff. good to see you still very productive. anatomy is getting BUNCHES better. i think what can help the next step is doing lots of studies of individual body sections as well, which would help when you bring them together with the whole body. i would also check out glenn orbik, kevin chen's studies, and some pages on here that studied/study under these teachers and i'm learning a lot from:

cool 3d models man!
as for foreshortening reference...you DO make 3d models...you don't have any figures lying around that you can use as foreshortening ref?
i would also suggest bridgman studies...figure out the structure, or even just work on the basic forms, and do some foreshortening from the mind...it won't be pretty at first, but you need mileage...it'll come. if you draw it, it will come.
more later. peace!

3d stuff's looking good. how're you enjoying classes?
rendering, painting materials and stuff, i recommend "Basic Rendering", by Robert W Gill (http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Rendering-Effective-Designers-Illustrators/dp/050027634X). best, most complete book on rending i've seen to date. besides that, do some drapery studies man! the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. even if that step is towards a plane. :P
also...arm studies! your forearms are looking rubbery. it's just positioning and memory, so do some studies of forearms in different positions, and REEEEEALLY pay attention to the silhouette in those positions.
g'luck dude; keep at it. :)

Hey fecks, gonna dump a ton of junk on you...
wish there were more hours in the day to draw, but alas, this is never the case.
Made my mind up couple years ago to go with the CG artist path and while thats rewarding in its way [ive learnt so much about 3d modelling, texturing, scuplting] i still wish i could double the days and fucking draw the shit out of everything.
I tried to tell myself "ahh youll still draw when youre not working on cg".. but im always working on cg. seems the only time i get to draw these days is when designing a character for a modelling/scuplting project
anyway, heres the past couple months in a few posts

I really like the individuality and freedom in your work. You have a great skill for developing characters.
Thanx for the heads up.

Cute girlies, the shoulders on the 3d one looks a bit too far apart, otherwise it looks really cool.

ayee, didnt have much control over the proportions of him, he had to fit inside a pre built rig [the Unreal tournament rig] which, if you know of it, has silly proportions
the plus side is that all pre-made animations in the game engine will fit him perfectly, downside, wierd shapes, I can live with the latter XD
and ill just leave this here..

this is free mo-cap data I found, which made me notice that some of the extremes are a bit messed up, specifically the skinning on the back
wont be to strenuous to sort out though :)
this isnt ever gonna be used, just wanted to see how the rig would hold up with stupid animation haha

trying out foreshortening again, Getting there, it fries my fucking brain right out. yay, brains.
*edit* just realised how messy her "fill" looks against a brown background, heh, no biggie XD
oh and been trying to get back into 30 sec studies, [45 actually, so it gives me 10 seconds to start a new layer and hide the previous one in photoshop] heres what happened when i turned them all on haha, i kinda liked it

First off I love the title of your sketchbook. It just looks so WTF in the middle of all the other SB titles ;).
I absolutely love that animation with the guy jumping around - it really cracked me up :D. #183 is fantastic as well, it looks good in a weird way. Weird is nice ;P. As a little crit though, your faces tend to look similar despite some differences in the freatures - the proportions and shape of the face are what does it, I think. They're very similar in all of them, even men.
How do you do that foreshortening thing, by the way? Do you just feel it or do you have some kind of a method? It's something I have trouble with.

did some more 30 second rubbish, cant be arsed to lay them all out, humph. Ill do some paper ones tomorree or something, maybe. also did a couple of longer ones, last time im doing that, ill find better reference than a shit model textured with shit muscle groups. they are good for quick poses, but thats about their mileage

Yeah, I agree with the posemaniacs comment. They are just textures and muscles slapped onto a figure but they really have no movement - they could do a handstand but the muscles won't show any strain. Or the boobs. The female figures can crawl on the ground and do a barrel roll or whatever the hell they feel like doing but the boobs are hard as rock and won't move an inch (a very important point...). They're good for warmup though. Anyway, I somehow like the last one despite all the chaos in there ;P. It's nice how you discover some figures every here and there, lol.

some damn fine 3d work man!! i just got into zbrush myself. trying to find some good brushes, and a decent work flow. the program is very intimidating at first though, even more so than photoshop or painter was for me. but ive been watching lots of youtube videos. the company that makes z brush (pixelogic) has some cool tutorials on there. do you have any good tips, or know of any other good tutorials online?
