i've taken a lighter to the canvas but it just wont burn!
any suggestions?

Canvas is a tough material. You could try poking a small hole where you want to burn - the frayed fabric will ignite easier.

You could try burning another type of fabric or a paper, and use it as reference for painting burn marks onto the canvas . Be careful though, fabric and fire is a dangerous combination, reccommend having a firefighter nearby.

When I was taking care of exhibiting paintings in a local café for other artists, we had a guy who blowtorched his paintings. It did look good, but it was also very fragile and we were very afraid of them being broken when we carried them. Painting a fake burn is the best option imho.
