Nice individual piece, but it doesn't necessarily say "post apocalyptic" yet, despite the guys body armour looking fairly Mad Max-y. The post apocalytic look really relies on everything looking jerry-rigged, making do by nailing two scraps together to make a third, that kind of thing. Okay, this scene doesn't necessarily need that kind of thing, but make sure to bear that in mind in the tech. and tools that your characters use.

But as I said, I like the piece. If the look of the character is how your style of human anatomy runs, it could look really neat as long as it stays consistent. He also looks like he could kick a few asses. ;)

Oh, and if it's a nuclear apocalypse you might want to give it a darker sky, or consider the environmental damage.

Post more!

Now that truck says "post-apocalyptic" to me. Nice. Loving the bomb guy too.

Some very nice concepts here. I love post apocaliptic stuff :) But as Donalfall said....In your first pic you should definatly try a darker sky. Something nice and stormy looking. Maybe a desert type terrain, to stay consistant with your kick ass character you have in the foreground. Maybe this would say "mad max" a little to much with a desert terrain. Maybe more of the edge of a city perhaps. That brings to mind "Blade Runner." but then that may cloud the focus point you have on your character. But all in all, nice work. Keep plugging at it. It's looking great so far. I'm eager to see you improve upon your concepts :)

Mr. Gadbury
July 20th, 2008, 08:02 AM
Some kind of wealthy evil guy, I thought maybe he could trade slaves or something - Tried to make it look like a wilted flower on his suit but it just looks like a bunch of bananas:nohope:

Alright I started one more, but its not going anywhere really tonight - Its a bit of a mess, not really sure where to take it from here... shame because I had a good idea in my head for this guy, not sure why hes looking this way

Mr. Gadbury

Couple of mutant animals, a dog and a bug - More to come later!

Started another WIP - Its going to be some tribal people occupying an old prison or something - I used a photograph of half life 2 as reference.

Mr. Gadbury
July 22nd, 2008, 11:03 AM
Heres an update on the last environment - Meant to be some tribal people occupying an old abandoned prison - Not sure where to go with it so I'm calling it finished :D ... Anyone got any tips should I choose to colour it? I suck with environments..

Mr. Gadbury
July 23rd, 2008, 03:28 PM
This guy is meant to be some kinda beserker type guy, I called it a destroyer, maybe part of a faction of them who just go round destroying... I'm not really happy with the design though. I'm still going to work on it more though :uzi:

Izra
July 25th, 2008, 03:21 AM
Well damn, this stuff is really nice and it really drags my attention, specially because it's post-apocalyptic (I love that stuff.)

I gotta say that I love the prison and destroyer the most and mind you, I'm not good with either colours or environments either, but perhaps a bleak tonality for the prison could look good? hah, can't comment much on that, but they're definitely great, keep 'em coming.

The gates to a city, and an unfinished piece :uzi:

Maybe play around with some hard edge brushes to add some more depth to your work. Also try using reff for when you are drawing hands.

Keep it up!

Couple of rats - Done the second one in a different view because the body looked strange in the first

Mr. Gadbury

Might be the last one today I think :)

This dog took longer than it looks.. :(

By chance do you do any thumbnailing before going straight to painting?

iheartmyself
July 25th, 2008, 07:33 PM
love the bomb guy and that truck-a-ma-jig
and basically all of your environments, they are so cool
i suck big time at environments, its the no patience with straight lines i think that gets me haha

Mr. Gadbury
July 25th, 2008, 07:48 PM
Thanks - I know exactly what you mean about the environments, I suck too, but I'm trying to learn them better now in the hope that it'll come more naturally to me, although it doesn't seem so!

Mr. Gadbury
July 25th, 2008, 07:52 PM
Kaffinated - No I don't, although I really should I think after seeing step-by-steps by you pro's on here. I saw Hurricane's step-by-step around page 50 or so of his sketchbook - I'm not sure why I dive straight into a painting, because that last dog of mine took so long because I had to keep changing and changing just because I wasn't sure on anything to begin with I suspect!

This stuff is amazing. reminds me of R.E: Apocalypse. I think it's the truck... And the desert-ey stuffs.

Also a big fan of zombies and mutants.. aliens etc.

Keep it up, I'll be checking back in this thread often!

An update on this one

I just realized that this duder has a really big head, and his forearms are pretty scrawny for the muscular looking upper arms you've given him.

Keep this shit coming, it ruleeesssss!

Mr. Gadbury
July 30th, 2008, 05:31 AM
King Denver - Thanks man, I appreciate the comments! Yeah now that you mention it, his head looks pretty damn big lol, I think I draw all my heads a big big...

Here's an update on the last one.

yes yo,

love your pencils ... so sweet. your digital art is amazing too.
just a small crit to your last one: you should change the position of shoulders and sitting of the "victim" guy.

i keep watching your progress mate :)

Just some quick studies from an anatomy book for today, they came out a little contrasty on this scanner. Made me realise how desperately I need to do more studies...

seetsy
July 31st, 2008, 10:49 PM
nice start to your sketchbook. i can really see u developing a nice style if u keep working on it..
the last image, with the guy with the gun, maybe the angle of the gun is too straight, it wouldnt sit on his shoulders like that, as if its being suspended by wires or something. I like ur rat designs, nice weight and i particularly like the head design..

maybe try some more colour stuff.. I think doing some value/colour studies
will definitely help you.. keep up the good work!

seetsy

whoops didnt see ur second page.. the painter stuff is really nice and good to see some nice hand studies!

I actually like the sketchy raw brush quality...not distracting. But it would be pretty awesome to see something a little more refined than the usual.

Mr. Gadbury
August 1st, 2008, 08:06 PM
Seets - Thanks for the comment, yeah I should do something about that, and s lot of others, lol. Yeah I'll try more value and colour studies from now on :)

Gardenrasalka - Thanks for the comment, I think I'm a bit impatient or something, I really need to spend a good few hours on a more finished piece, I agree

---

Well here's a few more pencil studies and quick sketches, one is a female character for this project, I really should draw more female characters. Also a quick sketch of a girl I was talking to on messenger.. lol.

These all look rough as hell, I'm going to slow down and spend more time on a finished drawing from now on. Cheers

August 3rd, 2008, 03:51 AM
I didn't update yesterday so here's some from last night and this morning - More studies, some ink ones, some pencil. A rather bad portrait of a friend from a photo - I eyedropped the colours for it.

And a long study - Getting the colours and skin tones is mega hard, but I tried! I apologize for the step 2 and 3 not being much different... Anyway, its about 3 hours so far I think.

Oh wowza... if you don't already have a job in an art field, you look like you'd make a good concept artist for a future game company.

Keep working on it, you've got a great start here!

Just trying some longer studies now, really enjoying it - This one is from photo reference, about 2 to 2.5 hours, in Painter.

August 5th, 2008, 03:02 AM
phenomenal work! I love the freedom of the lines on the group of models that was done (i believe) with brush and ink. I like to see how few lines and values can be used to express a form and i think you pulled that off very nicely. i don't have a real critique for you, i just wanted to say i really enjoy your work and keep it up. :}

Diaforetikos
August 5th, 2008, 03:15 AM
I love your brushstrokes. Not my type of art, but it is good. I can't give you much of a critique. Just keep working on your anatomy. Look up color theory and lighting. Just keep drawing and have fun.

Mr. Gadbury
August 5th, 2008, 10:05 AM
Cohen - Thanks :)

Diaforetikos - Thanks, I will do that !

Just some gestures, the first ones are from photo reference, and the last from my head.. Didn't go to bed last night so I'm gonna take a nap... bit of a lame post but I'll put it up anyway...

gardenrusalka - Thanks, yeah she's a hottie... on the photo lol

Just a couple of pencil sketches, just bought a new mechanical pencil so there's more to come later. I seriously need to practice more with the old pencil!

Oh and the tonal sketch of the lady is from the other day, forgot to scan it, I started a WIP for the current character of the week, Icarus - but its so all over the place at the moment theres no point posting just yet, I'll work on it later today and post it :)

Kaffinated - Cheers dude!

---

I woke up at 5am today, and worked for hours and hours... Lol.. anyway here's some pencil studies, a creature and character, and some digi drawings - coloured version of the pencil dog thing I posted last, some skelly dude and an apple study from life.

I will be continuing the post-apocalyptic theme, I'm just going a bit nuts with all sorts at the moment.. lol :xpld:

Oh man somethings happened to the dog thing, it looks all shitty like an older save or something, and its the only version :(

Mat Kaminski
August 8th, 2008, 11:31 AM
I'm really digging your post apocalyptic thing you got going on. I'm on the same kind of kick. Unfortunately for me, it's much harder for me to express my thoughts like you have here. Keep up the good work!

I'm liking how you're getting confident with your linework. The edges are getting thick.

I'd say continue with your sketch work and just keep on going with your life studies.

Mr. Gadbury
August 9th, 2008, 02:34 PM
Just a sketch for today, I'm swamped with written work that I've left too late :(

I came across an old CHOW challenge, a character for Degenesis, the post-apocalyptic RPG. I know its over but I wanted to draw something :)
The description was - 'ohann Alaric is a mystic, living in the urban ruble of the world we know today. He is somewhere in his late 50’s through late 60’s.

He is a healer, wiseman, guide and council elder for his tribe, who dwell someplace in northern Europe, possibly near what was once known as Warsaw. His is a world of snow, ice, concrete, metal and brutality'

I'll colour it soon. Cheers

Mr. Gadbury
August 15th, 2008, 06:21 PM
Thanks Gardenrusalka :)

Still swamped with work, and will be for some time, so I apoligise. I put it down for a while to do this CHOW - For the Red Sonja CHOW currently underway!

Expect mega updates in the coming weeks!

August 15th, 2008, 06:25 PM
more more more! some really cool style you got going there!

RandAlThor
August 15th, 2008, 06:49 PM
Nice stuff here mate. Im liking the post apocalyptic theme. Tell me, do you have your brush set to flow opacity on pen pressure?

Mat Kaminski
August 16th, 2008, 11:09 AM
Man, looking good.

The only critique I can say is that the edges are all smudgy... is that a stylistic choice? Or do you do that by accident?

Mr. Gadbury
August 19th, 2008, 10:07 PM
Thanks for the comment, guys -

Hamorhage - Thanks, I'll be posting again once I get this written work out the way.. d'oh!

RandAlThor - I use Painter, so the settings appear a little different, I have opacity set to 35% with the expression set to pen pressure. I use Grainy soft cover, with grain on 75% so it uses the paper texture underneath. Hope that answers your question!

Malakai SinClair - Thanks. I'm not sure, I do like to aim for the rougher painterly style, but the smudgyness I need to sort out, it always just looks like it needs more definition.

---

Got a new piece for uni, I won't be posting for a while again (still written work to do :( ) but I think I'm too tempted by the new CHOW to stay away :D

I posted the piece in the finished section, so I'll just copy the description on the piece over :P Its in Photoshop this time - Sorry for blabbering on again :D

---

The idea is based on the ideal body/attainable beauty and how the media bombards you with images of 'perfect' people, which makes beauty seem normal and much more attainable. The concept is the media as a big monster which some women try to climb to reach supposed beauty. I know I could have pulled this off better, as I know it seems a little confusing... - I hope I don't come across too sexist for just including women in this picture, as I know it affects men too, I just felt maybe it would best to keep it as just women, as it affects more young women than men - So if I do come across as sexist, I apologize, it wasn't my intention

Also, please so crit and comment

Reject-D
August 19th, 2008, 11:26 PM
thanks for stopping by my sb!!
some things i could say to work on is lighting.. the lighting is wasy too sharp.. when you look at an object the part closes to the light is the brightest and then fades as it goes to dark..

but so far your doing better keep it up!!

Mat Kaminski
August 20th, 2008, 08:22 AM
Oh neat.

That newest piece, although not completely amazing art-wise... is still a great piece to get your point across. Personally I like the message that it conveys.
Also, it has a very nice comic book style, easy to understand, and lastly, is not smudgy ;)

Hey you have some cool stuff in here.

These are looking nice, they look very natural with poses

Those last 2 are looking a bit stiff though, but it happens, and there is no quick fix, so we shall keep drawing! :)

Keep it up!
