Greetings!
I recently stumbled upon this forum and was very impressed by the quality of work on display. This place seems like a great resource to share ideas and criticism. I hope to contribute where I can.
Here are a few character concepts I created earlier this year for various projects:

This work is just mind boggling. When I first saw them I thought they were 2D, but at second glance they look 3d and then rendered and painted more in photoshop. Is this correct? These pictures just look too damn realistic to be only 2d. Great job on this and I love these creatures! Welcome to the forum!

This is tremendously wonderful. The first worm thing is just awesome, I'm really impressed.

Lol! I LOVE the weird multi eye stem thingy on the bottom. :)
The tail look inflated a little in the center... does it shoot stuff out form there or something?? (O_O
Anyway, cool stuff! :)

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I didn’t want his tail to be too long so I shortened and inflated it a bit to balance the weight distribution.

If it is just a still image, I can usually get away with roughing in the character in 3d and then detailing in PS. I find this method is the best way to play with color and experiment. When the project requires animation, I construct the whole thing in Maya (model, texture paint, rigging, etc) which can take quite a long time. Maya’s artisan tools are powerful but the texturing process is much slower –especially when working with several 2k maps.
In the first image, the texturing and modeling were completed in a 3d app called Electric Image. I used PS to paint the background and adjust the scaling of the right leg. I used 12 texture maps to create the variegated skin.
The second image was a quick 3d rough in EI and then PS for the detailing. It was completed in under 3 hours.
The third character is almost entirely Maya and is rigged for animation. I texture painted with artisan and used a customized paint effects tool for the ground. I used PS to adjust the color levels and highlights.
