New stuff is on the last page! GO FOR IT!

Hey, everyone. I'm generally pretty happy with my nose in a sketchbook, and spend a nice bit of time there, but since the end of highschool, I don't really get any feedback on anything I draw in it. I'm now halfway through college and a bit frustrated at the lack of ability [and sketchbook crits] I run into when I go to render scenes from my head. So! Any comments and crits are welcome.
To start it off, here are some recent studies, with stupid doodle auras.
414988 414993

This is part self portrait and part skull study. It's still unfinished. More updates on that later.
414997

A quick sketch I did of one of my friends in an attempt to draw from life more often.

Thanks for lookin'.

Here's and update on the self-port/skull study. Not done yet, but getting closer.

I'm not sure the perspective is correct, but that self portrait skull thing is coming along... nice work so far.

July 22nd, 2008, 12:36 PM
Hokay. This is about as finished as this is going to get, spare a few details.
418747

blenditall: Thanks! Some angles look a bit weird to me too. Most of all the angle that the nose and the nose bone comes out of the skull at in relation to the angle that the cranium has been cut. I'm not sure about it though. It may just look strange.

I did a bit of figure painting to help pull myself out of the minor slump from earlier this week. One's pretty assy. The other a bit less so. The second was done from a photo by mjranum stock (http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/) . He has some good references and such for anyone looking for some fun stuff to draw or paint by the way. The other was done from a photo from female-anatomy-for-artist.com
Quick figure.
421311

90min sketch.
421313

I don't have too much history doing any figure painting at all but I do find myself doing that more than most other projects and in longer doses. More likely on the way.

The two figures you did digitally are lookin' pretty good, especially your second one. Watch the left shoulder of the first one. It looks like it's a bit too far forward in her direction.

Also, If you haven't checked out posemaniacs yet, you definitely should because it's a great resource if you wanna do some more figure drawing.

Keep'em comin'!

lemming-clone-
July 26th, 2008, 11:53 PM
BadGeometry->Thanks for pointing that out. I ran into a bunch of problems while I was trying to sketch her. Posemaniacs is good fun! I don't have any paintings like you do but I did do a bunch of sketches. There are some wacked out camera angles in there.

Two more 90 minute studies today. One with lots of clothing, and one without. I need work on both, so it seemed like a good idea. Anyways.

First study of somebody clothed. Done from a photo that's part of the series Jakub Fighting series from human-anatomy-for-artist.com
422109

Second is done from a photo from mjranum stock (http://www.mjranum-stock.deviantart.com) .

Hey I know that skull!
Good stuff man, keep drawing from that that book, and don't forget life studies as well, one will feed off the other and the magic begins.

brentos8: Haha. I'm trying to take some life drawing classes when I can so I can get actual live models to work from but right now I can't. Unless I do an Alex Grey and start painting and drawing myself nude. I definately agree though. I notice it easily when I'm working through classes.

Two more 90min studies again. Today was a slow day in the land of figure painting so they're a bit busted. mjranum stocks (http://www.mjranum-stock.deviantart.com) used for both.

Apologies for the lack of updates. I got a bit frustrated about this fabric stuff and let it go for a few days. :nohope: Here are the few I did though. Any tips on fabric would be magnificent!

90min study from a picture by lisajen stock (http://www.lisajen-stock.deviantart.com/) .

Started as a 90min then turned long pose and eventually died to frustrations. Also a lisajen stock (http://www.lisajen-stock.deviantart.com/) .

60 min study. Done from a photo but right now I completely forget by who. Will update that when I find their page.

Currently I'm working on a personal project which will probably be posted in the Crit Center in a couple weeks.
Until then, peace and hair grease!

lemming-clone-
September 3rd, 2008, 05:44 PM
I've been working through these since the last week of August and taking my time, too. I'm trying to find a middle ground between the diagramatic drawings from anatomy books and a real world use for them in situations where an understanding is really required to work through obstacles such as foreshortening and differing body types, etc. The original versions with skin are out of Sarah Simblet's anatomy for the artist.
The last two are unfinished but will be finished soon I swear!

454485

454488

454489
This last one I'm also going to be etching and printing. More details on that later!
C&C appreciated.
Also, how do you guys handle processing anatomy?

lemming-clone-
September 24th, 2008, 11:47 AM
So! I finished the drawing I decided to use for a print.

472939

I scratched that into the ground and realized that there was a nice bit of extra space on the plate. After messing around with some ideas, I came up with this.

472938

I etched it everything into the plate and started cranking out test prints. I'm planning on aquatinting the background to a dark grey color and lightening up the figures a bit.

472940

This is the cleanest of the bunch. The scanner was a bit to small for the print by about half an inch on the bottom and right side so a bit got hacked off. Apologies. Anyways, here's a detail for those interested.

472943

Thanks for looking!

Got a few more test prints out today after toning my background in with a rosin aquatint along with a little spray paint aquatint.

I added a detail linked here because it's a rather large file.

shamandalie - No problem, just keep up the improvements!
And many thanks for the compliments!

kuwakovski - Thanks a lot!

I'm starting a self portrait piece. After a doing a few sketches, half a failed bunch D: I settled on this one.

485931

I'm leaving the hair unfinished on the sketch right now. The experience I have with my hair generally tends to be one of abstract experimentation no matter how many times I render it.
It's large and curly.
Bush like even.
Harboring denizens of my imagination.
When I get to it on the plate, I'll be doing it directly on the plate without the help of drawings.
So, here's a proof of the plate so far.

485932

I'm using burnishing and scraping over a triple aquatint for this instead of line work.
Any comments are apprecitated!

lemming-clone-
October 14th, 2008, 03:40 PM
I got my self portrait to a much more finished level. It could still use a bit of tweaking but, for the most part, it's pretty finished.

491814

Hopefully I'll have some more stuff quicker than these have been going.
Any crits or comments would be awesome!
Until then, peace.

Just to mess around in Painter again, I did an Andrew Jones style portrait. Might I say, the workflow is freakin' sweet! Even though it's grossly incomplete and still pretty rough, this is probably the fastest I've gotten something whole looking done in 3-4 hours digitally.

Hey, d00ds
Here's what I've been up to in the land of figure studies->

506052506038

506039

I'm trying to show the inner layers of muscle while still showing most of the outer layers as well. I have an 18 x 24 version of the standing male figure that I'll be etching I think. More on that later. I've also been trying to do more drawings from life.

506040

506043

I also bought myself a small sketchbook for quick life drawings. Mostly portraiture and retarded doodles thus far though.
506048
506049
506050506051

For the record, the first and last pen drawings do have the likeness of Tom Warbuton in them from when he did a presentation at our school! =)
The man's amazing.

C&C always appreciated.

Hey, everybody. I resurrected my Hogarth book and started doing some stuff from there. Mostly head studies with a few chest studies around the edges. I think I need to get better at finding the large forms and being able to render them in space.
I've also been keeping up with some pen portraits over lunch.

514619514622

514615
514618

I've been a bit busy with outside stuff lately but I have managed to get a bit of work done on a couple prints. Mainly on the smaller of the two. It's not done yet, but most of the tedious crap work is out of the way I think. =D

Here's the first proof fresh out of the acid.
523110

2nd proof-> Started adding in a background with some ball ground and newspaper. Got some bubbles from the acid though. Hopefully not a big deal.

523112

I'm going to go back and try to darken the background with a bit of aquatinting but for now, this is the result.

I haven't had much time for sketches but hopefully soon!
C&C appreciated. =)

lemming-clone-
November 26th, 2008, 10:52 AM
This is the finished black and white version of this print. I added a second aquatint to the background to make it a bit darker and to give the figure a bit more glow. Hopefully later I will be able to make a few color prints of this but for now, it is what it is. =D

528280

Will get back to studies soon.
I swear.

hi there! thanks for stopping by my book. :)

that last experiment is really cool!

you wanted crits.. hm.. perhaps try and work on the lines, try to draw with much lower pressure at first to really find your line, and then make your line, in one move, so you can avoid the "shaky" feeling.. does that make any sense? i hope so! :D

keep the studies going!

lemming-clone-
January 12th, 2009, 04:30 PM
notic -> Thanks! I'll keep thinking about that in future sketches. I think I have a natural tendency to get myself into a scribbling fury!

Here are some more studies and doodles. I kept up with the head construction a bit so a lot of them have to do with that and started trying to create some faces from my mind. Most of these are from the later half of December.
563131563126

lookin' good. i recommend paying careful attention to proportions when you do these longer studies. maybe try doing a simple block-in of the model and his/her proportions before you get into the detail. also, try and draw the light/shadow shapes before you put tone down and keep the values simple. squinting helps with this. just keep chipping away at it. i can see you've improved.

Amarok
May 15th, 2010, 02:54 AM
Nice anatomy/figure studies so far! :)

I definitely agree with the previous poster about blocking things in roughly first, though. On your left figure, first image in your last post, for example, the legs are a little short proportionally, and that's a lot easier to change when you're not already locked in. Don't be afraid to change around the bigger forms before you work your way to the details!

ohhhh, some of your works really impress.

Your anatomy works are very neat.

sometimes you show proportions a little distorted - but this is all about practice!

If you haven't read this post by Dave Rapoza, you should. Right now. It's an absolute truth that everyone of us has to struggle with at some point. I know I did over the weekend.

Wasn't too productive this weekend. .
Here's a bit of it though.

Hey dudes and dudettes. Here's what's shakin.
I pissed at getting my ass kicked by everyone on earth but at right now I'm pinned down with school. I have about 5 paintings, 2 prints and 2 drawings to do my the first week of December. So, until mid December, I probably won't have too much presence here. Which is kind of how it's been since October. .
I think the point here is school takes up way too much time for me to actually improve sometimes.
But anyways, here's a still life I did a bit ago in ink.

It's great that you've been doing so many observational studies! Keep experimenting with color, and really try to push your values - your most successful paintings have been the ones where you pushed the contrast and really observed the values, like the onion paintings and color studies of people. Also, keep in mind how you use hard and soft edges in your paintings, because your brushstrokes tend to all have the same softness, and it makes your subjects appear a little blurry and undefined. Use varying hardness as a way to emphasize things and lead the viewer's eye around the painting. Keep up the great work!

Sorry for the giant hiatus here. I've been cranking out lessons in Maya which are all pretty boring so I haven't been making as many studies or work lately. But I have been working on an older painting that still needs some love. --> ( http://www.illustrationandrew.com/home/albums/SCENE01WEB.jpg ) The gray, cloudy blob behind her was intended to be an anonymous crowd buuuuuttttt, it's a blob. So I'm working on painting an army of figures to create some chaos as only a crowd can. They're all a bit sloppy yet, but I'll tighten them.

good show of improvement through your sketchbook :D. The faces on this page are much stronger even from post 77 to 100.
Colours are a weakness for me too. Your colours seem to be desaturated (I'm told I have the opposite problem, my paintings look like Lisa Frank went on a drug-trip) . If your working from a digital source it's important to note that the eye dropper steals colours about 25% desaturated.
When in doubt use something you think is too saturated. It's easier to go grayer if you get too out of control.
Below is an example - If I think the first colour is correct I'll use the second colour. The tone is the almost the same but you can see it's a richer hew.

Hope that helps!

I really like all the studies you are doing. You can tell when someone
is on the path to turn steps and strides into leaps and bounds.

just keep pushing hard at things specific things you want to learn. I suggest
this to everyone but it's what someone told me to do and I reaped the benefits.

Really hone in on something to learn, i.e values, and do a study as long as it takes
you to get it 100% perfect. My first one took me almost 50 hours, but its like rare
candy from pokemon instant level ups. (excuse the nerd reference =o )

Hey dudes. Sorry about the hiatus. September and October have been crazy months. Anyways, still working on some studies.

Thought I'd jump on the cloud boat seeing how popular they are these days. :)
And daaamn they are useful. I've always thought about doing them and I don't know why I put them off this long. This one still has problems with depth but the amount of knowledge that you can get from just working with the atmosphere is ridiculous. I think I'll be grinding a few more of them out sometime soon.

Still working on the last traditional study. Really, just waiting for paint to dry so I can do the last bit of work on it.
Got another cloud study here and an SP.

13527041352706

As I was working on the cloud study, I was thinking that I was using a really counter-productive way of working. Instead of doing something like working with a simpler grey value and shadow color to start the whole thing, I was putting in the highlight color and a shadow color that didn't appear in the ref. This process is kind of how I used to do things, and I'm now really discovering how it was a completely dumb way to do things.

More updates here. :D

13561341356135

1356136

These cloud studies are kicking my butt. I still have no understanding of atmosphere yet. The blue from the shadow seems to come from the atmosphere, and the lighter the shadows get, the grayer they seem to get. Which makes sense, but what really gets me are the gray values that crop up that don't fit into that. The ones that seem to not respond to the color of the light or shadow, but end up making sense spatially. I've seen it happening in a bunch of places but I still can't figure it out.

C&C always appreciated. Thanks for stopping by!

Well, I'm back from Canada now, one less than amazing interview later, and some less than successful studies later it would seem.
I still can't figure out how the one head is constructed in the portrait studies. So, I went back to some more basic observational drawing for a bit. Made some slight improvements to finish up that gorilla, err--, cloud study from a couple posts back, too. :D

Alrighty. I learned yesterday that a little thing called DEATHLINE started in early November with the Daggers. I can't believe I completely missed this but, I'm jumping on as of today: DECEMBER 1, 2011. So my three goals to complete by DECEMBER 1, 2012 are:

1) Learn more about light, atmosphere and environment painting. It's something I've avoided for way too long and is causing my progress to slow. I'll have some weekly and monthly goals for this to break down and relate those big ol' topics there.

2) Move out of my parents house. As sexy as living there is, it's time for change. And I hate Pennsylvania.

3) Write and illustrate a book for the web. AKA, build up some portfolio. Book illustration and narrative is what got me into art and it's something that I've avoided because I never thought I was good enough. As long as I have a drive to improve, I'll never think I'm good, and I never want to go through a time where I don't want to improve. So, it's has to be done now!

Here's the paper map for it. If anyone wants to name a river or a forest or mountain or town or whatever, chime in. I still need lots of names for stuff! There's a larger version here-> http://www.illustrationandrew.com/home/albums/papermapweb.jpg
and a geographical map here->

Couple more landscapes here. Definitely getting better with picking out colors. It makes painting in the basic shapes go a bit quicker :) . Hey man! Thanks for the nice and helpful comment in my SB.

Lots of fun stuff in here! The painterly stuff is looking great. Only thing I feel competent to crit on is your faces, they seem to suffer a bit from a lack of construction and eyes also seem to big most of the time (i suffer from the as well hehe). I think AztcFireFlower (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3309483&postcount=) summed it up pretty good.

Drawing #2 here. Did a little Aquarius bit. Definitely fun to draw, even though this one was a little bit bumpier in terms of how I managed the process of actually drawing it. The clouds seem a little menacing for her character as well. Improvements to make for next time I guess.

your anatomy is getting deep man! Nice practical approach to understanding it. Which is inputting them in models and not just copying them. I think your environments are also getting stronger. Maybe I would suggest getting familiar with an established approach to the digital painting, so it can flow smoother. Or maybe your going for a certain style-- i dunno. Either way, keep doing your thing!

Peace!

Thanks for the comments! :)

Hey lemming, thanks for commenting on my skb.

Keep up wiht the life studies. In some of your sketches proportions look good in others they are so-so. But that's normal, I have the same problem. Also, when (if) you are drawing from a real model it's best to do your studies on big format paper so you can really concentrate on accuracy and proportions.

Also, some of your faces in your finished pieces look smudged in one direction or another. Do you make structural sublayers for them like you do in your sketchbook? That might be a good idea. For example, the head of the girl with the knife seems way too elongated vertically.

On the other hand, I really do like your landscapes, especially for the colors.

@ your last post: I don't know about getting darker values by smudging graphite powder, but maybe for the darks you can go ahead and try to draw directly with a 4b-8b pencil?

Thanks for commenting in my sketchbooky, you had some interesting points that I'll keep in mind next time I do art!

I think you are making good progress. I think some of your life drawings seem to have probs with proportions - I'd recommend focusing on understructure more - at least in poses you find difficult.

I think the composition on #155 is a little odd (is there a story for that one btw?) The waterfall goes right down the middle, which draws your attention to the center and then vertically down which I don't think is what you want. The highest contrast is also right along the waterfall, going down, reinforcing the split in the middle. I'd study or think about composition more and I think that would benefit you a lot. Your darks aren't very strong in that image, which also makes it a little hard to read. It looks like you put a lot of work into it though, which is the #1 sign that you will make a good artist! Keep it up :)

im really liking your environment studies, definately some good brush work in there. Your figures have some pretty lines but i'd look out for proportions as they seem quite off in places , other than that, good progress, keep at it:)

December 26th, 2011, 08:36 PM
Tea of Doom-> I'll definitely dig up some larger paper for figures. When I had a life drawing class, I did all of my sketches on 18x24" paper, but since then, I've used a small sketchbook. I didn't do any sub-structure for the girl knife painting job. I did that all from my head which explains some of its deformity but it does happen a lot in my observational work, too. I'll try that next time I get a chance. Thanks for the crits! :D
Jephyr X-> The trendy art study band wagon does have it's moments and cloud studies are one of them. They're really worth it. Thanks!
Lav-> Thanks! :)
Wholewheat_keyboard-> Proportion (and composition) is still a big problem of mine. I really have to work on it. There's not really much of a story but post 155 is a drawing about Aquarius. She's pouring water. . .(I guess that's a hobby of hers?) Yeah, the composition is a little funky with that white stripe of water in the middle but it was the best solution I had at the time. Definitely will work on composition, though. :D Thanks for the crits!
JoeS-> Thanks!

Whew, thanks for the comments and cirts, everyone! All I have right now is a graphite study still-life that took way longer than I planned. Approx 13 hours. .
Definitely made a lot of mistakes. Some of my verticals aren't vertical, the edges could use a little more love, not too mention the composition got a bit muddled amidst the drawing process. And the cacti just look awkward.
1388700
I should have used the powdered graphite a bit more, as well. I think that would have cut out a lot of time and created an overall better result. Note to self.

Great sketchbook! c: It was enjoyable to page through.

It looks like you might be trying a little too hard when you're doing your figure drawings. You've got a lot of nice details and forms, but it doesn't amount to much if the perspective and proportions aren't right. It looks like your biggest problems are with the legs and feet.

I'd really suggest studying the skeleton of the foot for a bit, then looking at photos of feet or your own. It helped me out a lot when learning how the foot curves and such.

Also, I'd suggest looking into a book called Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators (http://www.amazon.com/Force-Dynamic-Drawing-Animators-Second/dp/0240808452) by Mike Mattesi. There's a lot of great tips and techniques in it that can really bring your figures to life.

Sorry for the lack of activity lately. I have been working landscapes and getting a solid base down for my web comic. I have made a good bit of progress on that.
Although, on a somewhat unrelated note, I made this over the last couple of days and learned a good bit about work flow and textures in the process. I wanted to make a map that looked like a painted paper map. Similar to the Dragon Age: Origins map. That one was pretty sweeet.
