Hi...
Umm i had a sketchbook here at conceptart.org but due to the low quality of the drawings nobody wanted to comment on my drawings (At least i want to think that is the reason -_-)
Anyway my name is Liron Gabriel AKA Leon :B Sadly i live in israel.
I am 18 years old and I want to be a concept artist some day..
For 2 years now art was a part of my daily life.Evrywhere I go i think about art and i want to express myself through art.
Even though i find it very very VERY difficult. I know that someday i will make it and i will never give up until i will achive my goal and be a concept artist.
I will do what ever it takes to get to that goal.
Darn i tend to talk to much XD so sorry about that burst of emotions :)
Anyway i bought a scanner (Finally) and the quality of the pics are allot better...
P.S
I have a few questions:
1) Can i practice anatomy without a living model in front of me ?
2) Are there any good books about drawing in prespective ?
3) What is the overall way to enchance my drawing skills ?
By the way if you guys want to draw on my drawings to show me some guidelines feel free to do it :sungod:
Well that is all hope you guys will comment and help me out <3
I love conceptart.org! :yayca:
Here are the drawings:

I think I know what you feel. I don't like copy either, because I tend to copy the lines and not to listen how to construct the body. I'm currently at the stage I know I need anatomy studies, but I don't clearly see the way before me.
but I do some studies after anatomy books (only if a picture says something to me, I should be interested in it and find it beautiful), I study the human skeleton and the muscle groups (they're essential and I dislike drawing a line because "I saw others do that and it looks good", it's much better to know "oh yeah, biceps femoris is there" and I will never able to draw different poses from my head without such anatomy basics) and draw whenever I find a really tasty-looking sketch, draw poses and stuff ;) sometimes I feel down, but I continue. I'm a perfectionist who usually don't make extreme poses, details and coloring on a messed-up anatomy, I need a solid base first. you seems to be serious too, so if you keep going, there must be progress. sorry that my post wasn't really useful, hopefully you'll have better advice...

Hey - RainShinobi - I had a look at your posts. There are some great things here! I especially like some of the figure studies where you are looking at the figures from different angles. I know it can be really frustrating - but it is important to play and have fun with all of it. Enjoy the drawing and don't judge too much - with practice comes improvement. You draw better now than the first time you tried - and not nearly as well as you will in six months or a year - so ENJOY IT and have fun. The more your draw the happier you will be with the drawings down the line. I find it really helpful to find places to go drawing - playgrounds, parks, museums - anywhere that is people friendly and has cool stuff to draw. Even if it is just people sitting or walking or a family pet. Drawing living creatures AND the environments they are in will really help. For inspiration - Dover has a great line of books that you are fairly inexpensive that you can look through and drag around and just in general pound on without worrying too much. They are here: http://store.doverpublications.com/by-subject-art-fine-art--history-of-art.html I would pick some ones that seem interesting, and I always prefer to look at drawings over paintings - I am firm believer in the value of drawing as a staring point for all art. Good luck! I look forward to seeing more. P.S. As my long time mentor would constantly say - draw hands and feet!

RainShinobi - I totally agree with what other posters have been saying - your drawings are growing from the first post to the last already. Really great job!! You mentioned you were open to people drawing over the top of you drawings and making suggestions - so here is what I think would be helpful to you. I'd like to see you get as much volume into your drawings as possible. You're starting to do this already - I'd like to see even more. The figure is made up of basic shapes and volumes moving through space. Don't be afraid to overdraw the volume and even exaggerate it a little for now. Remember you can draw around the shapes, make marks and scribble - anything you want to do to get your line to show the forms moving through space. You don't have to outline just the outer shapes either - don't be afraid to draw the structure inside the figure as well. Even if you think you are winding up with too many lines and marks at first - observe people as they move as much as you can and see how they are shaped, see the volumes that make up a person. I made some notes over the top of one of you pages. It's attached. Always draw hands and feet as much as possible! HAVE FUN! Play and enjoy drawing!

Just a quick nudge for ya (I'm a beginner too). You are improving, and that's always good to see.
Are you continuing to block in your figures like WDM suggested? I noticed the blocking on that post right after he suggested it, and thought there was a BIG jump for you on that post.
Be blessed! Peace in Israel!

I can see that your anatomy sketches are getting more fluid and more realistic. You're doing great work - keep it up! Your lines are also very straight and angular, on the whole, I think that you can use that to your advantage for nice, dramatic effect or consciously try and soften and round out your lines for other drawings. As a beginner at art myself, I can understand your drive to get better, and you're really doing a wonderful job improving on your own!

Rain!! Glad to see you back! Don't worry about how much progress you are making from drawing to drawing - the secret to progress is to draw as much as you can, look at art books and master drawings and keep playing and experimenting!! Try not to have good drawing days or bad drawing days -just have drawing days studying and don't judge yourself. You'll be surprised how quick you grow when you aren't worried about it. More ideas attached.
P.S. HOLY CRAP!! You made more posts while I was drawing up notes - you're improving TONS!!

Rain - hey, KEEP GOING - these are coming along great. I like that you're starting to draw objects from life as well. Can you draw the a whole room? All the objects - the space they are in, how they are placed one to the next to the next? I doesn't need to be a rendered drawing - just try drawing the shapes and the spaces. Get some people to pose for you to draw some hands and feet and faces - You'll be surprised how quick the drawings grow. Will keep popping in here and there - KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

Rainshinobi, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned yet, but have you been to posemaniacs.com? go to the 30 second drawing page and just start sketching pose after pose. it's great for anatomy practice and you said you don't have many poses in your mind so it might help you out a lot. just thought i would pass along that website since it's really been helping me. good luck. i can see definite progress.

Hello. I see some good growth. Keep up with the studies!
Also be sure to keep a system of proportions in your head. e.g. elbow is close to level of belly, upper leg is about length from glutes to top of pectorals. Doing copious anatomy studies will engrave this into your memory.
Keep drawing and have fun.

I just chanced upon your SB, but I feel inclined to leave something because of the remarkable progress I see. I find myself just finally venturing into art, so take any of my thoughts with a grain of salt, but I feel it's remarkable how well your images come out when working with a reference - especially right after the advice about blocking out your subject. I think that made (as many others have noted) a marked improvement in your work.
If I were to offer advice, I would suggest you keep working hard with reference material, especially those 30-second poses. I see a a lot of positive change here. Kudos for you and good luck!

Rain - I agree!! - and the credit goes to all the work you are putting in. It is starting to bear fruit - keep rockin!! I think having some drawing books to look at would help move things more. Have a look at: http://store.doverpublications.com/0486223841.html, or http://store.doverpublications.com/0486465225.html or http://store.doverpublications.com/0486200248.html or http://store.doverpublications.com/0486212335.html or http://store.doverpublications.com/0486430642.html - the last one is a steal. You don't need to try and copy any of them - but I think you'll find that when you look at drawings the parts that fit your personality will rub off a bit and stick. Will keep checking in - GREAT WORK as always!

Rain - hey - quick bump for you - where'd ya go?? Would love to see more drawings.
Hey wdmdesigns the reason Iv'e been gone for some time is because i am applying to my army service.. Beacuse you know that every teenager that reach 18 in Israel need to apply to the army so well i reached 18 and i am applying to the warrior division .. so there is a slight chance that i wont come back alive XD but oh well :)
But f*** it I see my army service in this point of view:
In the army i will meet a tons of differnt people ! And for me to be able to draw them will be very very VERY good to me .. Just think about it 3 or 4 life drawings every day for 3 years .. thats kind of good aint it ?
So in conclusion I think the army service will do only good for my drawings :)
Anyway, dont ever think that i am giving up on drawing ! I am drawing every single day .. Now i want to focuse more on life drawing but my family is not that supportive so they are not really allowing me to draw them but ! I somtimes go outside and i draw trees .. its really relaxing to draw trees i dont know why :)
About the figure studies.. I am keeping on with the studies i dont feel my level in figure drawing have improved yet so yeah thats kinda dissapointing
But thats not bothering me at all i will keep on with the studies !
Well here are some of my recent drawings ... I will start posting agin beacuse i know its importent for my drawing skill :)

Rain,
Hey - I figured it was around time for army service for you. I always worry about people. I have family members in the armed forces, and my long time mentor served as well. I totally disagree about your progress though. You are making LOTS and LOTS of it!! Just keep at it and try not to worry so much about what a FINISHED drawing is - that always changes. Rendering and shading is a very small part of art (and there are some I'm sure who would disagree with that) - what is more important is moving the line - saying what you have to say about what you are drawing and completing the idea. Picasso talked about how finishing a drawing was disaster for the drawing and worse still for the artist - and he had a point. Just think with them and let them breath - they'll start to live and talk more and more as you practice. Thanks for the note in my sketchbook as well - more scanning and drawing to do this weekend so keep checking. I liked your note as well - does that make me a drawing Jedi?? :-)

Hey guys...
I really would like to start get into costume design .. I would like to know how to draw all types of armor lether steel all of them !
But i dont know where to start :( i thought about doing a research about how the humanoid armor "works" ... but after i tried to google it i did not found anything that can be helpful .. so my question to you guys is !
Is there any book/guide/pic's that show how the differnt parts of the defult armor works ? when i say "defult armor" i mean full plate armor.
Just so you guys could see how much i suck at costume design here is a sample ! :donk:

nice start, maybe you could google armor and put some helmet's and shields on these guys - you could try to use some reference to further your anatomy of bodies and faces also, it really helps. Nice sketches here.

What I use to do was Watch movie on my computer using "Cyberlink power DVD" application. Im sure there are many other programs to use that have the screen capture feature, but this is just what ive always used.
I just watch movie I enjoy with armor and other functional clothing and with one click I can save a screen shot of clothing armor, action, and specific expression.
Even a Nude still frame if you realy want, hahah You get the idea though.
Good luck man, and keep posting.

Rain - Hey - for someone who is so busy - you sure are making a ton of AWESOME progress!! Your figure studies are coming along like gold and the armor drawings are looking better and better. Want to point out picture making to you know as well - just to add some more spice to the mix. I see a lot of times that you are running one drawing into the next into the next - and you are letting the shape of the page control your drawings. If you start making thumbnails of your pictures and picking out different kinds of shapes to draw into - it will force everything to grow more and more - I grabbed one of your posts - made some thumbnails of how you might have mapped it out - and some notes as well. You don't have to try and live with my shapes or ideas - you're looking for YOURS - so don't be afraid to play around with the idea and come up with YOUR ideas! PLAY is key. You're doing great!!! Will keep checking in where I can. Stay safe and keep working!

hey good progress, try not to do so much volumetric shading (everything is kind of evenly shaded the same) on your sketches. draw a little circle where the light is coming from and then go from there.

Looking at your art, I'd say you've done a wonderful job. Lots of different studies here, and overall its really good.
There is one thing, that keeps on nagging at me though. I'm seeing a lack of structure in the heads, or it could be just me. Try and put some structure it, making sure everything lines up based on proportion (ie. in 3/4 views the eye farthest is smaller than the one closer), and the general anatomy of a person. So in other words, what may be bugging me. Is that the eyes/eye brows don't match up to the top of the ear. Remember, since the head is curved the ears don't match up based on a straight line. Try curving the lines, as if the head were a ball.
Hope this helps. :)

I have a problem with anatomy.
I am already trying to learn the methods and techniques to draw the human body the most accurate in terms of anatomy. But I just cant do it.
Basically when I try to learn anatomy, I'm just taking some anatomy book and copy the drawings.
I realize now it was not the correct approach to study anatomy so that i can master it.
But the problem is that I do not know how to study anatomy.. I know only copy.
I have a problem with rendering
I have a total problem with rendering and i have no way to escape from it i need to now how to render. The problem is like my anatomy problem i just dont know how i know there are values and my job is to mix them in the right way like in real life. but i just dont know how when i am trying it on paper i just suck donky feet ass.. =\
Those are my main problems right now
I think its a little bit stupid for me to come to a fourm that have pro artist in ask this kind of stupid question like i asked above.. But i belive that maybe some one could answer me and clear my path to become a better artist .. Because i really want to become one... I want to raise above my medium low grade drawings and advance to a refreshing level of drawing ..
Sorry about this rant but i need to clear myself i am so upset the i am not improving that i needed to get that out
So guys i am asking for your help one more time

Hey man. Your sketches have a cool loseness about them. You should try and keep that in your more detailed peices. I used to struggle with lighting and colour loads. My i suggest getting hold of Imagine fx (if you can) or going through their guides on their site. It is what did it for me.

i think you should try a different paper or a different pencil just for fun. a mechanical pencil might help you get some cleaner lines and shading. not that you can't have a sketchy style, but i think it would be good practice.
or maybe practice with a thick piece of charcoal, blocking out shadow areas. for instance in the last picture, if you are looking at a ref, squint at where the shadows are and really understand the face in terms of planes.
