EDIT: Thought I'd update post number one for a new thumbnail :)

Well. Hopefully having a place to post my drawing will keep me motivated to hack together a portfolio.

These are all quick sketches that I did today.

It's funny, when I was in highschool I doodled like crazy. But now... not so much. I feel silly sitting down and just drawing whatever I want. In fact, when I was drawing these just now, I was thinking back to what I doodled back then, desperate for some guidance!

Life drawing, plus anatomy study. 2 weeks without thinking about anatomy lead to a ridiculously frustrating time in the open studio/life drawing.

I like the drawing of the male head, the rendering is great but the back of the head looks like it's cut off, as if wearing a cap...I see some faint pencil lines that seem indicate some kind on head covering. Is this so?
keep posting!

here are some quick-ish poses... sometimes I think I've de-proved. It's hard to tell without some distance and objectivity. I'm planning on applying to some art schools this winter and I'm worried that my now looser (more fun!) figure drawings wont be the evidence of solid underlying construction that they (Calarts) want. :/
If you haven't already, check out: http://www.aaroncoberly.com/ I love, love love his figure drawings.

October 28th, 2008, 07:08 AM
great pencils, i really like how loose and yet solid they feel. i really wouldn't change your style to get into a certain school, i'm sure they'll be able to see that you've got good construction skills by just looking at your stuff, no matter how loose you feel it is.
can't wait to see more.

@raskull, for the color sketches (ie the paintings?) I'm using acrylic.

What a frustrating night, I must say. I spent four hours on a bad bad painting, 4 hours!!

Here are a few more, the first one is a copy from ferdinand hodler, a new art hero of mine, you should definately try a google search. The second is a longer pose portrait I did a few weeks ago.

Oh god all you (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1987858#post1987858) talented (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=116258) people (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=120783) have me in a funk!!

So, on the left is one of my attempts at finishing something, too bad I failed to take a photo of the nice drawing it started out as.
And on the right is a 6-8 hour figure drawing I did this summer and just recently pulled out to try and improve the value gradation.

Man long time no post. I had to take a break from conceptart.org and all the crazy good art. Also taking good photos of my drawings is somewhat dependent on sunshine, which, this being the verdant Pacific North West, is rare now that it's November.
Ok, so I upped the contrast on the pencil, no pencil gets that dark. Critiques always welcome, but thank you all for the nice comments :)

drone2222 yes that is pigeon! I was just at digipen the other day visiting, Maya is so confusing! Your library is so small!!
Thank you! For your nice comments, left so long ago, everyone. :)
mischieviouslittleelf that last one is pencil, I'm just shamefully reliant on photoshop to make my grey photos look halfway decent.

Well, long time no see. I've got loads of stuff though not nearly as much as I should.... oh well. I guess I should stop reading? And I should certainly stop watching frasier on youtube.

I was talking to someone who works as a concept artist and he said that creativity is just research, well. We shall see. I have researched!

What do you think? As far as my more imaginative drawings go my biggest fear is that they look like clicheed fantasy art. Do they? Do you find yourself rolling your eyes?

Fantastic work here, like kev said that portrait is beautiful. There's something really vivid and evocative about your handling of the forms of the body and face. It's also interesting how some of your line character/memory work develops. Good work, I'm certainly going to keep an eye on this sketchbook.

Thank you! I do try on the anatomy, so thank you for noticing :)

Here are some more: some tiny kangaroos from the zoo, and a work-camel inspired by a film I watched in a Middle East Studies class called a time for drunken horses. We didn't see the end in class, but here's the Wikipedia Entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Time_for_Drunken_Horses). It's a beautiful and very sad movie from what I saw. The same directer, Bahman Ghobadi, also made marooned in Iraq, which I have seen twice now (somewhat accidentally), and is also a beautiful movie but is sort of a comedy as well, it's funny, but not laugh out loud funny necessarily. Here's the IMBD page (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317226/).
...and finally some random awkwardly posed guy (and friend?) I drew while practicing arms, check out the bicep disappearing underneath the deltoids! And, o.m.g, the lovely twist of the brachio-radialis!

Well, I will say it. I am feeling tres nervous. (read panicked)
I have to apply to school!
And by tuesday I need something coherent involving a prop a vehicle an environment and a character.
I feel like I latch onto my original ideas and have trouble moving on. So that I don't really do thumbnails progressively leading up to a finished idea, I just spit the idea out and then do a few stupid thumbnails to make myself feel better. hmmm
Honestly I have no idea what I am doing. How do you combine believability with originality?

Does picking the feel and images count? I mean honestly what creative things can you do with a desert?

Here are some photoshop attempts. I am so frustrated with it right now! I keep wanting to blame things like my computer, my tablet, my RAM, my CPU, my moniter, the humidity, the temperature etc etc. :( As a result what you see here are all with the default brush (squashed)! and I have given up on painterly and am aiming for screenprint/graphic.
The first is just whatever trying to draw something easy to limit the difficulty variables, the second is after a sorolla painting "Maria with Hat". ugh..
...The final three are with my beloved REAL LIFE media and are copies of Sargent paintings inspired by a beautiful ink sketch that Sam Weber or Edward Kinsella did... So they're like, master copies times two! :) In real life they are really tiny, which is why the scanned versions look so chunky.

JesArt Thank you, but I am not 18, I am 22. Yes I know, I am old to still be a student but, to each their own! It took me awhile to figure out that art is important to the world and that it is pretty much the only thing I truly love to do and want to do for the rest of my life. You get so much information down in your gestures, they're really impressive. Absolutely loving that last batch of 3 min poses in #97. Your longer poses are also fantastic from a page or two back.

Don't know if you've read it but, Practice and Science of Drawing has some really neat information about the impact of lines in shading based on their orientation, not a critique or anything as your line work and shading are both great, it just might be an interesting read.

Incredible work!! I am a total fan of ur life drawing. Your line control is so good.. Are they all from life or imagination? Personally i problems drawing figures from imagination. End up with millions of construction lines and a mess haa. Any advice to gain more confidence in my line work?

Ur shading is also amazing. what is ur shading method to get such quality? Hatching or using the side of the pencil or a combination of both? Do you smudge it down?

Sorry for all my questions but i want to be as good as u :)

I'd kill for that sort of control over my lines. excellent Sketchbook. Great figure drawings and gestures

And good luck with your applications. Don't think you'll need it though =D

Really nice stuff in here.
I wouldn't even worry about whether your work will make the grade. The understanding will be seen. I think you'll always keep the structure (which is good) but the emphasis will be on design. Will be interesting to see how you choose your direction and how your work matures. It's already very very strong. There is alot of understanding & knowledge you are infusing in your figures. And the design sense keeps your work interesting. Not easy to do (esp, for me) :)
This one is quite beautiful

Really love how you employ the shadows in a clear but soft render. Much thought put into your edges. This is a goal of mine to display my unique view on design without sacrificing or at least intelligently losing the structure if it calls for it.
You are definitely one to watch.

AztcFireFlower Thank you so much, it means a lot!
Josef K. thank you, I've been working on line weight
Oki Thanks, I am just biding my time by the mail box at this point
kevinwueste ha, thanks
Mydrako Thank you! I wouldn't sweat the construction lines in the beginning. For awhile I began all my life drawings by sketching in the rib cage and pelvis. Only after I did that for awhile did I start to let it go, little by little. I think it's important to force yourself to be strict about proportion etc for awhile, while you are understanding the basic shapes made by anatomy an how the figure is put together (simply), but ultimately, at some point you have to just let go of analyzing what you see and allow yourself to focus on enjoying the process of drawing it.

I do everything! I smudge, I hatch I hella use the side of the pencil! No technique is off limits :D An instructor of mine once told me that you should let the pencil push and pull and rise and fall through space as if you were sculpting the figure with your pencil... at the time I thought that was more artsy fartsy mystical language, than helpful advice... but now, I think there is something legitimate in thinking of your pencil as rising and falling with the figure.

NextToNothing Thanks, I love the Practice and Science of Drawing, I love Harold Speed!
Vorace, *ViRuS* Thank you!

Normally I have a pet peeves about small smudges on the paper on figurative work. When it could be easily avoid with another sheet of paper as a hand rest.

For some reason I don't mind the smudges too much in your drawings. I notice some smudging in your cross hatching which gives it a nice charcoal like effect. Almost like softness lightening. Was that intentional? I like the slightly bended values on her face

hey! Thank you for your comments :)
So I finally got a new computer... I am so happy!
and have been practicing in photoshop... which has been frustrating.
So... here are two of essentially the same head... but one with levels adjusted and one without... I'm not sure which one I prefer... what are your thoughts?

also... why are they fuzzy? because I accidentally resized them smaller... worked on them for awhile and then wondered why 100% was so small and so upsized them... thus they are a little fuzzy. shame I know... I am learning!

More photoshop! I don't know.... trying my hand at something semi ridiculous. It is weirdly hard to judge proportions on a screen.

I finally took a photo of something! I did this last night... after I completely dumped over my o.m.s, stepped on my pallete box, tripped over my water bottle and then proceeded to trip (and fall down dramatically) going up the stairs. Uuuugggh.

This was pretty quick.. maybe an hour and a half at most... I've been reading William Morris Hunt and he talks about getting a simple impression right away and then once you don't know what to do... just stopping. don't fuss around with no idea of where you are going (with your painting). I couldn't resist doing that a little, but I tried to stop myself before I began that arduous process of fixing something that doesn't really need it, only to spend the next 10 minutes trying to fix your fix.

here's the quick one i did after realizing I had no idea what to do for the other one
