Welcome to CA, don't be intimidated. Figure out your goals and the little steps you need to take to get there, we're all learning and trying to improve. I would say go out in the world with pencil and paper, do lots of drawing from life- buildings, cars, quick gesture drawings of people or animals, just get a sense of how things exist in real 3D space. Good luck and keep posting and drawing, you'll get feedback and get bet better faster.

hey dude, welcome to the .org!

check out the link below; it's a thread for working on color, value, and form.

http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955

your pictures don't look very three-dimensional at all, and that comes down to value and form. knowledge and hard work will help you overcome that. don't be discouraged; keep working and learning and drawing every day, and you'll get there. peace, dude; happy trails.

some ok stuff here. Just keep practicing. Look into anatomy, grab some books from the libray. Draw & Sketch. Dont stop. It's amazing how quickly you will see yourself improve. I look at my stuff I did in February this year compared to what I have done now, it really is cool to compare how much you improve. Go sit in the garden, draw whatever you lay your eyes upon. You have a nice start, you just need to practice, much like myself. We're all in the same boat here my friend. Welcome :)

i guess i didn't explain myself that well.

when i mentioned 3d, i meant about form, or even an appearance of depth. that's what shading is about; trying to show that something has form and isn't just flat. the thread i sent is not a tutorial so much as a workshop, with exercises to help you practice shading in such a way that it helps you create depth in your paintings. learning how to draw things in real life will help you when you draw them from your imagination, as i'm assuming that all of these are. just reading it isn't gonna help you; you have to do the exercises as well. anyway, its up to you. as for digital art, the only things you've posted here are digital pieces, but if you have non-digital art please do post. keep working hard dude, and i hope you continue to improve. take care!

Hi thanks for stopping by my sketchbook :) Your pencil sketches in the above post are out of proportion, but your second one is much better than your first. Did you say you are 14 in your first post? Well I'm like 10 years your senior, so look at it like this. You keep practicing, never put down those pencils & you will be much better than me when your my age. If it's something you love doing just dont quit, like i did. Anyway, i think what you need to do is work from reference pictures or better still, draw from life. If you want to draw people, wait till your mother has finished with those gossip magazines & rip out all the pages that have people on them & draw the crap out of it. Trust me they help, I have lots & lots of these, he he :) Study the shapes, look where it's lighter or darker & where the light is coming from. People are one of the most difficult things to draw. I have tons upon tons of people sketches that are way off, as you saw in my sketchbook. But sometimes you get one that you like. Start off simple, draw a cup or mug or plates. See things as shapes not items. Items are generally made of Sphere's, Cylinders & Cubes ( boxes ). Keep working :)

I would suggest you spend more than 10-20minutes on a drawing..
Also, draw your hand. Draw it and keep drawing your hand till it looks just like it!
Or draw an eye from reference, but keep on drawing till you think it looks like a copy, this will give you a sense of detail and alot of understanding =)
Infact im gonna go that my self right now.

Ok listen my friend, it comes down to a really simple thing if you wish to improve:

Studies

Since you're new around here I'll try to explain to you how this can be beneficial to you. To draw something, you need to KNOW it. to know something is to understand its construction, its form, its masses, proportions, etc... I promise sooner or later you will se big improvements if you do those studies.

Proof: MindCandyMan's 6 years 51 pages sketchbook. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870)

Good luck!

It's always pleasure to me snooping in the new Users SB's! Your fantasy is pretty mad! I suggest you to draw first from reference, memorize the forms and other stuff like that then start to develop your shading skills (if you have some)! So it's going to be hard work but you're 14 and have a spare time to practice! Gain some experience from the top artists then post stuff!

While you should draw for fun, if you want to do this for a living when you are older, you need to do some more formal exercises. So take your hand, hold it in some position and draw it using only lines, no shading.
Do this every day and post them. Srsly.

advice from these people is so valuable, yet you seem to have not even read the posts?
you asked for advice, people have given it, but yet you just carry on doing what you were doing before, completely ignoring it
do some studies, go out and draw, from life, draw something over and over until it looks like it
sorry to be brash but when people put in the time to help you, and it gets ignored, its annoying as hell

Hi dude,

I can only repeat what others have said, you have to draw some people from pictures or from life to learn. Draw some things from magazines etc. Not just people, but everything, it could be anything around you, work on some drawings as realistically as you can, like others have said, you have to study to learn! Good luck !

Of course people will tell you to practice more til' you do ... You're just drawing stuff from your mind, which could sure be called 'practice' in some way, but unless you practice practical stuff like from Life or Images or whatever and start training your VISUAL-LIBRARY.. You won't get much better.

Its cool that you're trying, but you don't have a single study in your sketchbook... You'd be a lot better ( and I promise you it feels good when you start to nail shit down ) if you started to do studies.

You've got some awesome critique up there and tips.. So why are you complaining about people caring and trying to help you ?...

i got through my illustration degree by getting critiqued. u need to be told what is "bad" with ur art. it makes u better
why do you want praise so bad?
ok here is what you have done "good" so far-

You started a sketchbook thread on a forum with some of the best artists in the world available to crit ur work.

that is "good"

the bad-
YOU REFUSE TO LISTEN TO THEM! why why why!

ok thats it for the rant

here is what u can work on right now:
take time with ur line
ur lines look furry
because ur unsure on your line u have a "searching line"
draw with pencil
ur not ready for digital
straight up not ready
learn how to make art traditionally first

NICE man! Thats what we wanna see! at least you tried man, absolutely don't get discouraged by your first studys result, to me it looks pretty good for a first too =)

Try to find some book on how to draw heads or smth, to get started and to get started into thinking of formulas and stuff.. perhaps grab some anatomy books.. Just draw anything man! In just a few weeks you'll be able to spot massive improvement if you do a few of those studies everyday!

heres some basic stuff too: http://media.academyart.edu/freeclass/

ah youve finally tried to do something with some realism, well done

for the drawing, its okay, you could do with looking at the proportions a bit more , and also, if you drew in the back of the head, it would look a hell of a lot more "human". i think youve done this because the photo chops it off...but youll see what i mean here.. [hope you dont mind me doing this, itll help you in the long run anyway] you could also make sure the eyes dont get too big either
but its a good start, next id give a go at a self portrait, from a mirror...its alot different to a photograph
keep it up :D

SkyTheArtist
August 7th, 2008, 03:25 AM
Hey, it's good to see you finally buckling down and getting some life drawings done!

It's very difficult when you start out. For me, this was not too long ago. Yes, it can be boring, and it can be frustrating, but if you even DREAM of a career in the art world, it's absolutely necessarily that you learn these things. Don't focus so much on how it comes out, per se...But what you learn as you explore the human form, be it in a photograph, or yourself in the mirror.

Dont give up. Keep on fighting. :) It'll pay off...Trust me.

August 7th, 2008, 08:24 AM
Hi dude, your first study is not bad at all, but if you really wanna improve your skills, dont try to copy your model, but observe it, analyze it, almost all the difference between a good drawing and a bad drawing comes from the observation. TAKE YOUR TIME TO OBSERVE THE MODEL !!! And when you think that you've assimilated the model mentally, in your head, so you can start to draw, I know that in the beginning, it can be difficult, but be motivated, draw a lot, and you will see some improvement in few months.

Hope you've understand what i mean, because i don't speak english very well and make a lot of mistakes

RandAlThor
August 7th, 2008, 12:51 PM
Some good advice being spoken here. Its always hard to make a start when there are so many others that are doing better, but treat it like starting at a new school, you know, you don't know any one and you are still finding your feet, put in the hours and don't get discouraged and the improvements will soon start to show. keep up the passion dude ;-)

Well if you want people to constantly praise you, post your stuff on deviantart. You won't improve, but you'll feel like you are...

My advice, plan when you draw your faces. Outline with the egg shapes, symmetry lines, and eye lines so you know what direction to draw in. Don't do it freehand. Try to be as loose as you can and work with sweeping lines, not stubby fuzzy ones.

Zombunny27
August 7th, 2008, 01:52 PM
You've already got a lot of great advice on here. I think it's really important to take the time to really look at what you are drawing from. Don't glimpse and continue from memory. Memory is a pretty funny thing, and can really interfere when you are learning. Make it easy on yourself and worry about what is right in front of you.

stop with the character design, just dont do any for a week or 2, study this anatomy and just draw what you see around you, draw a hand over and over and over in different positions, draw your feet, grab a mirror and do a self portrait, draw anything! then, if youve done this, go back to character design and see how different they will look

I sure hope you're going to use them. I mean sure, you made a couple of attempts, but it's going to take MUCH more than just a few to get anywhere. You gotta push yourself, work really hard at it.

And take CRITIQUE.

Yes, it's nice to get praised, but if you're only praised, you'll never see your mistakes, will be lead into false reality, only to have it come crashing down upon you when you have to use your artwork for something, like your career.

These people are not here to attack you, or not here to make fun of you. If anything, their advice is the biggest sign of caring they can give for you, because they want to see you learn. You say you know you need to practice, but they are giving you specific things. Take their advice! And dont just listen to it, but SHOW you are taking it as well.

I'm not trying to be mean, and I dont think any of us are, but if you want to go anywhere with your art in the future, this advice is vital to your growth as an artist. If art is nothing more than a hobby for you, then DeviantART would probably be a better place. It's mostly praise there.

and dont say your sick haha, you can still pick up a pencil and draw, if anything it requires the same amount of energy [or less] as playing games and creating things like that ^ in photoshop
the only person youre lying to is yourself kid

you should be copying every pose in that book. just draw it as perfectly as you can. then when ur done.... do it again
forget about blender. its not industry standard anyways.
unless you want to be a 3d modeler then id say for now just forget about 3d. it wont help you at this point.

"Wounds from a friend are better than kisses from an enemy."

dude, i really don't know what you're looking for. logically:

1) you want people to be impressed by your art
2) people want to see good art
3) in order to create good art, studies are needed
4) you do no studies

do you see what i'm getting at? dude, i say this with all the love and encouragement i can have as a fellow artist: you are not that good. you want people to comment on your art (and numerous people HAVE ALREADY!!!), but you don't want to put in the effort to get to the level where you make better art that people like! you were away for two whole months, and you have done 5 pictures but NO studies? you want to jump to the advanced subjects (complementary colors) without the foundations upon which to apply them. that's like wanting to slam dunk without learning to dribble or jump, and it just doesn't work. dude, EEEEEVERYBODY here wants to see you get better, but nice words about your art won't make it better. people giving you advice about how to get better won't make you get better. :ay: :ao: :au: have to put in the work to make yourself better. that means putting up the video games for a bit, and not drawing the "fun stuff". it means doing studies. it means reading about art. it means taking that spoon that everybody's been handing to you and putting it in your own mouth, figuratively speaking. you want comments, show that you're willing to improve your art. don't just talk about it...don't just say you're "working on" doing studies...just DO SOME STUDIES! we'll know when you've done them, cause you'll have DONE them! you do studies, i guarantee that you will have people comment on your art. with all the Thanksgiving pie that you ate (hopefully you had some good apple pie :) ), take a slice of humble pie as well. listen to people that give you advice, because they do it out of care for you. i hope this sinks in, and i really hope to see some consistent studying out of you. don't think i'm trying to tear you down, and say that your art is all bad, cause it isn't. you understand some concepts, you just don't have the knowledge to do them right just yet. shading, for example. you understand somewhat, cause you don't color everything a flat color, but you don't know correctly what all goes into making something look 3d. and there are things that can help with this: they're called "studies". we can point you to the right direction, but you gotta walk through the door yourself. so i suggest you cowboy up, take a look through AAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL the comments that were made, and the links that people have given you to some great help resources, ask questions when you don't understand things, listen to the answers, and get to steppin on some studies. we're cheerin you on man, but you gotta take the first step. do some studies.

happy thanksgiving, i really hope it went well.

It's mostly praise there.
i think tht is what my problem is

"it's nice to get praised, but if you're only praised, you'll never see your mistakes, will be lead into false reality, only to have it come crashing down upon you"

i can say my mom which she is a big part in my art life shes always says tht im the best and so i was only used to tht

keep it up, i can see improvement already. good to see you starting to understand "bounced lighting/reflected lighting". :)

and dude, if you have something to add to what you've said and no one has replied in between, you can always "edit" your last post, and add whatever new thing you need to say at the end of your previous post. there's no prize for having lots of posts, and having lots of empty posts in your sketchbook. it'll make your sketchthread cleaner and more grown-up-like.

happy belated birthday. :)

YEAAAAAAH ! You've decided to listen advices !! I really recommend you Loomis' books, t will learn your basics ( and more )of anatomy, perspective, composition, and some other stuff ! Here is the link >> Loomis (http://www.placidchaos.com/AM/index.php?title=andrew_loomis&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)<< ( just right click on books cover and "save as"). So Keep your studies up, and in a few month you will be a killer :)

This reminds me of my first sketchbook, an anime-esque art style. Stay away from that, you'll get stuck there for a long time and that'll hold you back. I did that, I tried to stay in defined styles but now I'm doing studies and the like. Very late, but better late then never.

If you don't have any money or can't head to the library try checking out some Art E-books http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=131117

The downloads helped me greatly, first download Bridgman and Loomis. I drooled over Loomis and it's intimidating at first especially when your art doesn't look like anything you're trying to draw but keep going and keep learning.

kasper - have a little grace man...we've all been at that stage sometime in our lives. let's see how we can help.

momo - though kasper was harsh with the way he said it, he's saying basically the same things that many of us have been saying...if you want to get better, you need to do more studies, and keep taking the advice that people give you. you started off on the right track with the light studies, but one study doth not an expert make. the red-shirted character is the best thing i've seen from you here, but you still need lots of work on lighting (as many of us do and are still learning how to do). dStrax gave you a great idea for a study in post 100, you can't miss it. why don't you give that a try? and don't just make up stuff out of your head for studies just yet. get real objects, and try to draw them as best as you can. we can help with advice along the way, but you gotta put in the mileage. merry christmas, congrats on the intuos; put it to good use with some studies.

i cant believe, after so much time, advice...very very good advice, that other people will beg and plead for, you still dont listen, and still dont care
purb has helped me shitloads in the past, and id listen to him if i were you.

stop making excuses for not drawing "oh i got guitar hero" or saying youre going to, dude youve been "saying" youre going to since you joined
even when im not on here, which i havent been for a while, i have something to show for it
im pretty sure before you edited your first post, it was something along the lines of i want to do this for a living etc or i want to improve.
people are giving you this on a plate, take it
and if you dont care for what people think, id recommend re-thinking what you want to be doing in the future

i would compliment the study...if you did more than 2...you started to listen, people complemented you, and you went out of your depth again

get your thumb out of your ass and listen to people

Good to see some studies. I hope you'll keep up the good work.

I've also had some trouble with life drawing for a long time, because I didn't know where to start. But then I realized that instead of wasting time thinking of what to draw, just draw whatever you see in front of you, or your own hands and feet. They're always right there for you.

Oh, and about where you didn't know how to make an egg stand on end for you to study? Put some water on the bottom of the egg (don't make it too wet), put some salt from the salt shaker in the palm of your hand and dip the egg in the salt, making it stick to the shell. Now you should be able to make it stand. =D But it might be safer to boil the egg first, to avoid making a mess.
