View Full Version : DSG 1385: Fantasy Creature • HERBIVORIC DRAGON
William b. Hand
July 16th, 2008, 11:15 AM
[ Although we don't tend to see pictures of dragons eating, it can generally be surmised by the aggressive teeth and claws that they are indeed carnivorous. ]
[ This dragon will be different. ]
[ This dragon either followed a different evolutionary branch, or was culled by some friendlier magic. ]
[ It will still be able to fly and spit fire or whatever, mind you, and can still be plenty fearsome looking... ]
[ ...But, it will not eat horses. ]

I thought maybe it could have evolved to live underwater and eat kelp...its wings have modified into swimming "arms" and its forearms and back legs have gotten smaller, shorter and webbed...(I know it cant fly but it still has its "wings"...hope thats ok)...so yeah...no wacom, no time so no color...but soon though :)

prepsage, thats just hot how you still managed to paint the dragon as a threat to humans but then hint us that he's after the veggies being sold at the market. great! Are you working professionally?

Herbivorous dragons were born and bred to be ferocious battle creatures, tamed by humans, they evolved to survive by eating plants. As companions, and battle-steeds, these magical creatures were unmatched, yet due to the low reproduction rate - very rare.
Also, incomplete and crappy sketch, but not enough time to finish. >.>

prepsage at first I thought he was going for the humans...but then I noticed the Farmer's Market banner...priceless!...reminds me of the elephants in Africa that rampage villages to eat their crops...its really terrifying actually...anyway great job!

man, I'm so loving this daily sketchgroup. It's one of the best things I've joined in ages. Hopefully after 365 sketchdays I'll be able to stand along the pros here.
Anyway here are my oppinions again on the posted works:
-sudsy: a good study, although I think you should use this as a study and now try to draw how the actual dragon should look like.
-King Acer: welcome aboard. This is a cutesy dragon lol. Did you drew from a reference and then alter it into a dragon? Again I'd love to see a full body pose of this.
-Goran: man, you are the King. spot on. Convincing enough anatomy! and epic as you included a full size tree to see just how massive this herbivor is.!
-Mitze: I thought you got these images from some fairy tale book. It's pro work and surprising to see such a classic way of illustrating. I'm amazed how fast you did these though! Thumbs up!
-prepsage: I said it before. I love the whole setting of this epic pic.
-lenorekitty: cutesy dragon again, love the dynamic pose and the fact taht you placed it in the water.
-Volchiha: nice work! it's a classic drawing but i love them this elegant. For some reason herbivoric animals feel like they should look friendly and female :D
- rampopo: haha, that's a funny one. i can almost see it chewing its mouth. fun work. Some issues with how the wings look. They look kinda unnatural.
So mine is here then. I set myself different goals each time. I'm not aiming to get the best drawing but rather learn something about what I do each time.
As for the picture itself I got inspired by prepsage and took it along for a ride. So some guy is transporting all kinds of veggies and fruits to the next village...and yeah, the herbivoric dragon is in full pursuit.
I rtried to get a kind of dynamic angle that would draw you into the dragon attacking the fruits. Its started with sketch then I applied quick black and whites and put on some colors.
It was surprisingly easy and although there might be a ton of mistakes in it, I'm quite happy. Any feedback of course is welcome.

-King Acer: welcome aboard. This is a cutesy dragon lol. Did you drew from a reference and then alter it into a dragon? Again I'd love to see a full body pose of this.I looked at a drawing of a mouse when I drew this, cause I wanted it to be a little rodent like. It actually came out cuter than I actually wanted it too be, but I'm still happy with it.
Might do a full body pose when I've got time.
Great pictures everyone!

yoohoo, some more cool designs. Man that work of light in your piece is awesome ryoken. Taiylz, you should fix your dragons teeth, herbivors don't have those sharp teeth but have teeth like cows :D You made him look like he ate that flower by mistake :D Hamsta, I love the short wings lol, its like nature laughing at what the dragon has become :D
Prepsage A graphic designer? Haha, that's what I'm studying to become, though my passion is in drawing. I always thought I was good, untill I saw you guys at conceptart. Still, never give up! I can get there with hard work! (I hope)

Ok, so if anyone's seen my previous works... (Ref: Lovecraftian and Construction Bots). I've been working in only black and white, since I have no clue how to actually control opacities to the extent of producing great works, yet. So, this is a quick jump into the color world.

nice stuff here, i like hemorhage's very much, i also love longineus beelketh, and hamsta's dragons, they're so cute.
longineus: i like his face and the way he interacts with the horse, hehe it's great =)
beelketh: i like the design and the colors a lot!
hamsta: i like the colors of the dragon, and his size...i don't know it looks pretty heh like a pet, and those tiny wings are lovely eheh =)
regarding mine, at first i was a bit puzzled but after looking at the other images i started to get an idea of where to go. I followed the ideas of rockett and hemorhage, i liked the idea of this dragon giving a hard time to the farmers hahahah it was quite hilarious in my mind, hope you'll get to laugh a bit aswell xD
my idea was that this dragon behing herbivored developed a sort of love for apples, and he ate soo many apples that he started to become fat. He wasn't flying that much cause of the weight, and his wings became small. And so he goes stealthy trying to steal apples from the farmers, and after distracting them with some fire, he grabs the apples and hides somewhere to eat his precious apples while the farmers are still puzzled =)
cheers =)

Seems to me you've used a lot of tools without any need for them. Personally I would avoid the following:
-Gaussian Blur
-Burn/Dodge, it's much better to just use the color picker and then select a lighter or darker tone to paint on top with your brush. If you use a low opacity brush and brush around like you'd shade a drawing you'll already see nice painterly 3d shape forming. There's a good bunch tutorials all over the web. For me personally a good way to understand painting is to paint old school with real paint. the more layers of transparant paint of top of each other, the more believable the surface becoms...anyway don't take it from me, there's lots and lots of crazy ass artists around to look at :D

Again some thoughts for any who like:
Anthis:very majestic..just the way I like dragons..well that. or very fearsome. I like the way his wings stack up.
pepps:that's such a funny picture. You've really succesfully portrayed a character here. See I love these scenes where a little story is told. Although I wonder how this lazy dragon managed to "sneak" around to get the apples :D
bombchu: I presume you draw the lineart in photoshop or something. It's not smooth and a bit thick. I think you're style of drawing would wuit better using illustrator which would make coloring easy as pie. Myself if I draw lineart I draw on a sketchpad and use a pen to ink it. then either use it in photoshop or trace the lineart in illustrator to easily bucketfill the work.
razorleaf: lol, 2 in one :)
riao: that's quite a nice first post. he looks frightening! And his sharp corner teeth...scary(sure he's not a meat eater :D)
takmask:what a chilled out dragon, is he snmoking pot through his nose ? :D

Hamorhage: Thanks for the tips! :) Me and Photoshop aren't on very good terms but I love Illustrator to death~ I'm not sure how to shade with it, though, which is why I tried Photoshop. Also, I never outline the Illustrator work 'cos it just ends up looking wrong. I'd like to work texture into it too but, again, I d'no how lol
Pretty much, it doesn't feel like my work has the same depth as when I use traditional media... and I don't know how to convey that without it being sloppy. :(

I should have made the wings smaller, for greater effect.
pepps Cute idea, great detail, like the belly button, and the farmer's toasy behind :P
Could use some work on the anatomy (the farmer, the dragon's legs)
Would also be nice if the dragon's head was less cluttered.
Hamorhage That is one ugly dragon, which could be a good thing ;)
It's a little out of alignment though, the face isn't exactly centered.
It's an interesting choice to make the dragon so dark, gives you that staring at the sun look, but also making it difficult to notice detail.
I'm not feeling the sense of motion you had in mind, it seems rather static.
Is it the horse on the left? The composition? The parallel lines of the cart? not sure.

I admit it came out more static then I had in mind, I feel I gave the dragon more detail then was needed though, since he's quite high up and like you said there's the blinded by sunlight kinda effect. As for the composition I was thinkingg of foreground (the 2 horses on both sides), mid (the rider) and back, the dragon. I was hoping you'd read it in that order and then get pulled back to the middle making the link that the dragon was aiming for the fruits and veggies. Geesh you're hard to please hamsta :P Thanks for the critiques though! I will aim to get better untill you like at least one of my drawings :D

Hello Everyone...My name is Claudio, And I think this is my first art post on CA.org. I hope it's ok to post on this thread, I promise that after aI do a couple of these older ones Ill start doing the new ones as they come out...if I can keep up >_>
Anyhow, here's my herbivoric dragon, He has vestigial wings that dont help him to fly but he can use them as elephants do to control body temp...I sticking to it...
Also, now that I look at him he's giving me the Gangta stare.... 0.0 hehe he's a hard-ass. I tried really hard to get out of my usual drawing box and try something different with the head..Im pretty happy with it...also the tail is my favourite! XD
True it took me a long time t do this, but it was MASSIVELY instructional, so I had to follow thru..ok sorry, here's the pic :)

How could I possibly miss this ?? maaaan I love dragons :D
1.5 hours work.. I can go on and work on this for hours... but then it could'nt ba called a daily sketch.
Gumish it's looking good. At first it looked like you had colored it with crayons.
Stormovic a very dared perspective. Proportions are pretty good too, allthough the middle toe should be a bit bigger, it seems smaller compared to the one to the left. Also I get the feeling he has very big hands :) I think it's intended because of the angle, but it looks more like he has big hands normaly than a hand close to the "camera". Other than that, keep it up.
Snorkz I like it.
Clochette I don't know how you got the same picture as qualauq, and since it's his photobucket user, I guess you did a mistake. I'd like to see yours :)
Qualauq that's cool. I love eastern dragons with horns and furr and stuff.. nice.
KuGu Welcome to CA, very good job on the dragon. It really looks like a big herbivore, and the idea with the wings is good too. Join in on more daily's! it's really fun and educational.
... I'm too hungry to be writing to the rest of you.. sorry.
