So briefly about me: I'll be starting Entertainment Design at Art Center this fall. But I've lived in Pasadena since February working on my portfolio and other work.
With this sketchbook thread I hope to repay best I can the inspiration, eye candy and repeatedly being awe-struck. And, hopefully get some helpful criticism along the way :)
Cheers :yayca:
Here's some of my more recent work:
I'm focusing on value, since it's 80% of color.

I love it when I find a new sketchbook, and the "new guy" is already a monster talent.
This is one of those times.
You're gonna do fine. Welcome to CA!

a la bapsi: thanks :)
eromenos: are you thinking of applying to Art Center's Entertainment Design Major? make sure to check out the 'official art center thread" under Art Schools and Education, there are some helpful tips for what your portfolio ought to look like.
IanE: you flatter me :) I'll try not to disappoint!
If you haven't noticed my huge Sparth influence, this piece couldn't make it more obvious:

Love your figure drawing XD But I think I still like your environment more maybe bc of the style.
ah I was wondering for entertainment design is it like purely concept or does the program have more to it?
and yes I'm being quite loser-y by flattery and then asking a question that has nothing to do with your work so I'll continue gushing. I like the figure drawing of the asian?guy. His knee is awesome +_+ I love your toning and your lines and am really jealous of how clean you can get it to be. Mine is like squiggle before i start toning smudging away the squiggles. And I like the figure drawing on your computer though .. I think it's a little too dark? Or maybe that's how it looked when you were drawing. AND I LOVE YOUR DEMON. It's so cool and whispy and glowy. It's like an evil moving auroraborialis. Anyway keep up with the good work.

eromenos: what drew me towards entertainment design, is that it is all concept! but the beauty of it is that you get to design anything not just cars or just consumer products, or illustrations. In fact, I'll entertainment is probably the most diverse discipline. What did you have in mind?
each figure drawing is roughly 3 hours of work, I guess that's what allows for the precision. It's all about how well you see what's in front of you (observation) and how well you know how to use your tool. But a general tip I'd give is hold off from blending for as long as possible and really work hard to get the proportions down.
I guess the digital life drawing feels really dark because I chose to work on a dark gray ground
a la bapsi thanks :)
I'll post more stuff Sunday night

Great stuff!
Grats on getting accepted to the Entertainment Design major at ACCD :). With some classes from Scott Robinson, I'm certain you're work will shoot through the roof this year :P
Definitely keep posting more of those speedpaints and environments. I'll keep an eye out :)

eronemos I'll be developing the mecha crab into a much larger battlescape type illustration
Eerin I really do hope so :D from what I heard First and second term means back to basics learning to drawing freehand straight lines, ellipses and basic design and color theory. But I'm looking forward to strengthening my foundations. After all a pretty rendering is just a waste of time if basic principles like proportion, gesture, value arrangement aren't well laid down.

Anhedonic analog. Very nice concept designs. One thing that popped my mind from those life studies that I'd encourage you to work with anatomy and proportions. I think it'll help you a lot.
Hope that helps. Take care and keep at it and let's see some more stuff!
