View Full Version : Brigand Games :: Female Fantasy Adventurer

July 14th, 2008, 09:17 PM
Please note: this was a former CHOW activity that has been moved to the non-paying job section due to the nature of the event.
Fantasy Female Adventurer
The Basics
Iconic fantasy adventurer for the cover of a 1st-level adventure using the 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules published by Wizards of the Coast. The character must be female, but in the interest of giving the artists flexibility and creative input, there are some options: Race can be human, elf, half-elf, tiefling or eladrin. Type can be wizard, warlock, warrior or rogue. The character should be young (20's, not a teenager), but slightly battle-hardened and ready to take on a challenge. Skin color, hair, eyes, etc. are up to you (as long as they are consistent with the race you choose).
Details
She is definitely one of the good guys, but that doesn't mean she can't have an edge -- she can be an altruistic hero with a heart of gold, or a mercenary adventurer just out to make a fortune in gold. Attire and equipment should fit with the race and type you select. Keep in mind that while she isn't wet behind the ears, she is still in the early stages of her career, so she doesn't have access to high level magic-items and spells (no magic carpet beneath her feet or giant fireball erupting from her hand). If you don't play the game and have any questions about equipment, powers, spell effects or other game-specific details you would like to include in your entry, you can ask the question in this thread or by e-mail and we'll answer.
No Cheesecake
We can't emphasize this one enough. She can certainly be attractive, but we want our products to reflect a modern sensibility towards women. No art which objectifies a woman as a sex object. For example, this means that if you choose a warrior, outfit her in practical armor and equipment -- no chainmail bikinis. Sensuality and attractiveness is fine, but stay away from plunging bodices and thongs. Many of the female characters featured in RPG art traditionally have been better outfitted for the bedroom than the dungeon, and appear primed to be entrants in a fantasy edition of the Darwin Awards. The guys behind this contest are both, well, guys, but we also both have young daughters. We certainly aren't looking for anything we would be embarrassed to show our daughters a few years from now.
Location
How much background to include (or not include) is up to you. If you decide to depict location or background in your entry, here are some details about the setting for our adventure: The Eydun Islands are a remote scattering of mist-enshrouded isles in the northern reaches of the Soulsea. Each island is a rugged hunk of basalt dominated by plunging coastal cliffs and ironbound peaks thrust into low-hanging clouds. Monumental sea stacks loom above the crashing surf. The climate is windy, cloudy, rainy and cool throughout the year. Sunless, overcast days are common, it rains more often than not, and the islands are frequently cloaked in dense fog. Though treeless, the islands are green with grasses and moss. The bulk of the adventure takes place in a vertical stone tomb located in a sea stack, so if you wanted to do interior rather than exterior location, a standard stone dungeon/tomb interior background would be fine ... perhaps she could be ascending a narrow stone stair inside a sea stack carrying a lit torch, or using a magic light spell.
References
Character references - There is a lot of information and art references on the Wizards of the Coast Dungeons & Dragons website (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/welcome). A good preview of the look for 4th Edition can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4art/20080220a). Now that the 4th Edition books are out, the website is likely to post galleries from the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide soon, which would be good resources for character references.
Location references - The real-world reference for the location of the Eydun Islands is the Faroe Islands. Here is a good source for some photos of the Faroes (http://replevin.smugmug.com/gallery/1698539#83524803_xwWSt), and another (http://www.pbase.com/nielsgi/faroe). Wikipedia has some useful information, pictures and links as well (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands). Two sea stacks just off the coast of an island feature prominently in the adventure and could possibly be viewed in the background if you like. You can find images of the real-world sea stacks on which ours are based (Risin and Kellingin) here (http://www.pbase.com/nielsgi/image/77191956) and here (http://www.pbase.com/nielsgi/faroe).
The Contest and the Prize
The winning entry will be selected by Brigand Games. The winner will be awarded $200 and a contract with Brigand Games for use of the winning entry on the cover of an upcoming RPG adventure product. The contract will also allow us to use the entry on our not-yet-live website, and in future RPG products we publish. Though we'll contract for exclusive rights, we will allow the artist to use the entry in their portfolio/gallery, and to sell prints of their work. We will only use the winning entry under contract -- we're not looking for free art from other entrants (we understand this may have been an issue in the past). Rest assured that we respect copyright and artists' rights, and have no intention of "stealing" entries. If we absolutely must have any of the runner-up entries in addition to the winner, we will contact those entrants about purchasing those entries. Also, the contest winner and any other quality entrants will certainly be on our short list for future commissioned works.
About Us
Brigand Games is an RPG start-up company launching a line of fantasy role-playing material under the Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition Game System License in October 2008. The principals are Frank Alejano, an engineer in Texas, and Morris Richardson, an attorney in Florida. Our business plan is to begin as e-publishers. If we do well enough, we may make some of our products available in print.

BrigandMo: There's a lot of references to things a non D&D player would not know, and the site links provided don't seem to answer that (without buying a book). What's a "eladrin?" How would someone know the right skin or eye color for a race or acceptable weapon/clothing/whatever for a class...?? One can't really conceptualize based on the variety...without knowing what the options are (and thus...can't really email to check ;) ). Are there any other refs available?

They seem to look like elves. If in doubt, choose another race.
What I'm wondering is what time period is D&D roughly supposed to be? What sorts of ships do they have? Wasn't able to find anything about time period. Other than we're obviously still running around in armor and using swords (and fireballs).

D&D kind of flows in a medieval hybrid timeline. (there are some things that break those rules but nothing major). Think Lord of The Rings and you probably have a good idea, since that series among others were obvious inspirations for the D&D creators (though Gygax always denied such...yet was forced to change 'hobbit' to 'halfling' among a few others). Wiki article on sources and influences on D&D development: here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sources_and_influences_on_the_development_of_Dunge ons_%26_Dragons)
I'll dig around more to see if i find any other useful references. ;)

Elf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons))
Half-elf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-elf)(bit vague on this one, but it's self-explanatory really)

Fair enough. There are many good D&D 4th Edition character references at this link: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4art/20080220a. Humans and elves should be readily identifiable. Eladrin are essentially elves ... more information here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20071221. Tieflings are the refs with horns and tails, ala Hellboy. From Wikipedia: "Tieflings usually have horns located on their head, pointed sharp teeth, tails ranging from small to large (depending on gender) and eyes that are usually red or black."
When in doubt on hair, skin and eye coloration, stick close to the references in the first link above and you'll be fine. Same goes for equipment. Think high fantasy (e.g., Lord of the Rings) here. Your idea of what a high fantasy warrior, rogue, or wizard should look like is probably just about right on, and the refs can help you take it from there. Right now, Wayne Reynolds' work probably best captures the current look and feel of the Dungeons & Dragons game ... his personal gallery is here: http://www.waynereynolds.com/. You'll also find some great character work from him on the covers of Paizo Publishing's Pathfinder series here: http://paizo.com/store/paizo/pathfinder/adventurePath.
Hope that helps, and best of luck. I'll be happy to try to answer any more specific inquiries you may have.

Think high fantasy, approximately Lord of the Rings in terms of tech. Specifically regarding ships, I think it would be ambitious to include that in this entry, but the adventure is set on an island chain, so a ship scene could be fairly natural. If you're interested in that angle, there are some good refs in one of Wayne Reynold's art galleries here: http://www.waynereynolds.com/MiscellaneousGallery.htm. At least 3 or 4 have pretty good ship scenes. However, NO FIREARMS OR CANNONS please ... the art he did in this gallery is for a specific setting that allows for gunpowder. Our setting does not.
Again, I'll be happy to try to answer any specific inquiries.

Does this mean we have to know specifically what sorts of objects are in the game? I can't just give her, say, a round shield and a sword with some gems in the blade. I have to specifically use the Sword of Dragon Slaying and Convention Destroying +3?

Great question, sorry this wasn't covered in detail in the brief. I'll answer to the best of my ability, but keep in mind that I'm new to publishing, and you guys probably know far more about this than I do. Oregano, if you'd like to add anything to this or add these guidelines to the brief....
(1) Color artwork is preferred if you wish to opt-in to the Brigand Games contest ... B&W cover art is a hard sell.
(2) The cover for the product measures 8.5" wide by 11" high. Art should fit this, and allow for a .125" bleed on all sides. The upper 1/3rd or so will contain a header, logo and product title. If your art contains crucial elements that appear in this location, it probably will not work. Do not crop your own artwork if you go outside these margins. If we're very enthusiastic about a piece that suffers from this problem, we may ask if you'd be willing to make some slight changes to make it work.
(3) Images should be 300dpi, available in .jpg or .png, and artwork must not suffer when resized.

I'm all for artistic freedom on this, but we'd prefer no drow here. I personally feel it is a little overdone. Also, drow do not figure into this adventure as villains, and I'd prefer to stick with a "core" iconic hero for the cover of this product. In other words, something that could be played straight out of the 4th Edition Player's handbook. So when we say elves, we mean elves of the "good" variety. No offense to the legions of drow lovers out there....

LOL. No, no, no, you don't need to be that specific. If your entry is going to be a warrior woman, round sword and shield would be aces.

Yeah this is kinda important if you want to opt in, So I've made my template for my eventual image, but what does the bleed mean? all I did was add .125" to the documents dimensions setup guides so i can see it. It will just be trimmed there I assume.
And when you say artwork should not suffer when resized, do you mean if you have the image at 8.5" x 11" at 300 dpi and resize it bigger it shouldn't suffer?
Sorry I just want to clarify things a bit.

Bleed, trim, live art area, thoroughly explained here:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115867
Obviously, since the top third will have title information in there, you will want to have a live art area in your template that won't have your characters head up in there to be covered over by words. The bleed thing is basically just a fudge factor to account for shimmy in the page chopping machines.

RyerOrdStar
July 15th, 2008, 07:02 PM
I think it's mostly the proportions of her body that are throwing you off. Her head is a little too small for her width. Maybe make her clothing less thick? She looks like she'd be in danger of heat stroke under all those layers. It's also not very good for movement, since she is a rogue she'd probably want to be pretty manoeuverable.

Wow. In total disagreement there. She didn't even register as "larger" to me. Unless she's obsese, I do not see how that might affect her ability to be agile (especially if she's a bit of a novice and not all sinew and muscle yet) or what race she might be. "Everybody" fancies a thin, curvy chick 'cause that's what they might want to play, or play for...but really...if we were playing to reality she'd likely be solid muscle with little boobage to speak of.
I agree with RyerOrdStar that the head looks small, but I think the layered/thick clothing is appropriate for a foggy, rainy, underground, barely any flora=likely cold environment.

Alright, I'll show my cards. YES I'm thinking of showing mid-drift. It may be slightly on the wrong side of the cheese fence but c'mon, it's still fantasy. It's not like she's got exposed, magically-flaming tits or anything.
Very much WIP, I fucked up on the perspective so she has to come down a few inches. (those little round things are going to be armpit-shields... I don't know the technical name for them. They aren't boobies :))

You basically gave her a metal tube-top. Cool arm guard thingy though. I like the idea of the shot, high up and entering one of the rock stacks. Maybe try to work in a stack in the background with doors/windows/architecture on it just to make it more clear that she is entering another stack.

Jason: I like the perspective you're going for (the lighting will be interesting and epic, I'm sure ;) ). Anatomy seems decent--I like her right leg. I would definately move or lose the "armpit guards" as they do look like boobies. She also seems under-dressed for the weather she's in.

Those armpit guards are called Besagews. I agree that they do look a little like boobs at the moment. obviously you havent detailed them, but i think for a start you could maybe move them down and out a bit. The center point should sit right over the armpit crease.

Thanks guys :)
The top will actually be some sort of leather cuirass, I'm looking at some medieval/rohan stuff as reference and thinking about lamed elements as well. Thanks Arthur for the new word, yeah they're smudged up so they're quite formless right now. I wanted to put them in for some more armor than just leather and they might yield a neat element to the outline of the armor.
As for her being under-dressed, I wasn't sure how far into the land of fantasy I'd go, if she'd be a utilitarian or be an iconic "I don't need pants on everest" hero. I'll see if I can work some cloth into the mix without ruining the silhouette.
Anyways, still nearly 2 weeks to go. Plenty of time to improve. :)

From the 4th Edition player's Handbook:
To clear up any confusion about the two "obscure" races.
Eladrin are of human height. They are slim, and even
the strongest simply look athletic rather than musclebound.
They have the same range of complexions as
humans, though they are more often fair than dark.
Their straight, fine hair is often white, silver, or pale
gold, and they wear it long and loose. Their ears are
long and pointed, and their eyes are pearly and opalescent
orbs of vibrant blue, violet, or green, lacking
pupils. Eladrin can’t grow facial hair and have little
body hair.
Eladrin children grow much as human children
do, but their aging process slows to a crawl when they
reach maturity. They enjoy youth and health for most
of their lives and don’t begin to feel the effects of age
until the middle of their third century. Most live for
over 300 years, and even at the end they suffer few of
the infirmities of old age.
Tieflings’ appearance testifies to their infernal bloodline.
They have large horns; thick, nonprehensile tails
that range in length from 4 to 5 feet; sharply pointed
teeth; and eyes that are solid orbs of black, red, white,
silver, or gold. Their skin color covers the whole
human range and also extends to reds, from a ruddy
tan to a brick red. Their hair, cascading down from
behind their horns, is as likely to be dark blue, red, or
purple as more common human colors.
Tieflings favor dark colors and reds, leathers and
glossy furs, small spikes and buckles. Tiefling-crafted
arms and armor often have an archaic style, harkening
back to the glory of their long-vanished empire.

And when you say artwork should not suffer when resized, do you mean if you have the image at 8.5" x 11" at 300 dpi and resize it bigger it shouldn't suffer? Sorry I just want to clarify things a bit.
No worries, this is a good clarification question. Actually, my thinking here is that the cover image will also be used on website advertisements for the product, so it needs to look good when resized accordingly. We'd prefer if it doesn't become too muddy when shrunk down a bit. No plans to resize it bigger (though the artist may wish to do so for selling prints, etc.).

Forgot my question: what about blood? I don't mean entrails scattered about but would a smattering of the red stuff on a sword be inappropriate?
"You've got red on you." A little blood is fine. I would avoid gore.

Hmm, so, definitely portrait. That throws my idea right out the window haha. By the way, do they have horses there? I'm guessing they would be stumpier than what we think of as horses? Or maybe they imported horses by ship? Can we put a horse in it?
Horses are not a particularly good fit for the geography of this adventure. At best, horses would be extremely rare, certainly not common enough to warrant inclusion on the cover. There are plenty of sheep, but that's about it for livestock. If you are absolutely set on a widescreen/landscape view as opposed to portrait, we could make it work, perhaps as a "band" roughly centered across the cover. But we'd have to really, really be blown away by a submission in this format to choose it over the preferred portrait layout.

OK, I'm going to try to avoid commenting too much on WIPs. But I do want to say that I'm impressed with what you've done with the brief, working in both the central setting (tomb inside a sea stack), as well as evocative background elements that fit the geographical description. That said, the little round things do look like, well, boobies.

First, sorry for my multiple separate post replies above, I just figured out the multiquote feature here.
a question to the people in charge if i may... (apologies if its been asked already) but are action shots acceptable? and the inclusion of other characters for her to battle with? or will that take too much focus off the main character? is it more 'character' than 'scenario'?
Although Brigand games is sponsoring this event, it is still CHOW, and we don't want to detract from that. This is definitely more about character than scenario. If you feel it will really add to your entry by somehow emphasizing character, then you could include a foe for battle. My first suggestion would be that if you're simply going for action, you could put the character in an action pose, with the foe off-camera. If you feel you must include a foe, I would make sure that the emphasis remains on the character, and not on the foe. I want to emphasize, foes are not requested or required ... if it works for you, go with it, but I don't want anyone to feel like they must include this element.
question about the low level if I will draw a wizard and "giant fireball erupting from her hand" is a fail, well, can tell me some dnd freak what is a proper low level spell? Thanks. Also, if I decide for an action image, what creatures I may put her to fight with? Skeletons and goblins too hardcore? Wolves? Weasels?
In the 4th Edition D&D game, there are two types of arcane casters, Warlock and Wizard. I've listed some common spells of appropriate level for each. Note that a number of these reference an enemy, but you could probably convey the effect using an "offscreen" enemy, or a POV shot from the enemy's POV with the spell effect coming out at the viewer.
Warlock - Eldritch Blast (she fires a bolt of dark, crackling energy at a foe); Hellish Rebuke (she points her finger, and her foe is scoured in hellish flames); Diabolic Grasp (she crooks her hand into the shape of a claw, and a great talon of sulfurous darkness forms around her enemy); Vampiric Embrace (a ribbon of twisting darkness streams from her hand to her target's heart, feeding on his life force as she grows stronger); Dread Star (she creates a fist-sized orb of painful blue white radiance that she sends to whirl around her enemy, searing him; fierce rays shoot from it like jabbing daggers of light).
Wizard - Light (with a wave of her hand, she causes a bright light to appear on the tip of her staff, upon some other object, or in a nearby space); Magic Missle (she launches a silvery bolt of force at an enemy); Burning Hands (a fierce burst of flame erupts from her hands and scorches nearby foes); Ray of Frost (a ray of white frost streaks to her target); Chill Strike (she creates a bolt of frigid purple energy around her hands and sends it hurtling toward a foe); Force Orb (she hurls an orb of magical force at an enemy); Acid Arrow (a shimmering arrow of green, glowing liquid streaks to her target and bursts in a spray of acid); Flaming Sphere (she conjures a rolling ball of fire).
As for foes, see my response to jread above. If you feel you must, skeletal warrior(s) would be appropriate for an interior scene inside the sea stack tomb. No wolves or weasels appear in the adventure.

I guess goblins and kobolds would be ok at this lvl (http://draconusdictum.files.wordpress.com/2006/12/kobold.jpg)
as for the spells... here's a link so pick what you see fit from the lower lvl spells I guess. but I'd stay away from the necro ones since they weren't really for the good characters, at least as far as I played... :) http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/DnD_Sorcerer/Wizard_Spells

Shardana, looking great, i like the demon thingy in the background but i think the brief says that you should keep to "low level" characters? im thinking demons and things arent that...

Elven female warrior. I read somewhere in the d&d universe that elves don't use iron because it burns them or something. I'm probably WAY off, and if I am, please tell me I'm not very familiar with D&D. But, I figured it would be cool to have an elf use an iron sword, even though it burns. Like, she's trying to repent of once doing something evil or not being able to save someone she loved or something. Idk, it's just a wip. :)

I used to have an inspiration folder... Then I had to get a new computer and it all went caput V_V....
And so this isn't a useless post.
Jason Rainville - Shoulder shields, breasts yadda yadda. Other then that the composition I find a bit iffy. The character seems too small and she's the emphasis, not the background. Well that's my opinion.
Dimagyan - Seems stealthy. Like the style. Looks like a ninja.
Rushwolf - Faceshot is great, but I'm finding on my own clothing plays a large part of it. Early to judge...
Jread - Like the third one on the second row the best. Although for your latest posts the background would look great if you finish.
Wiggers - Love the armor detail (I have an medieval decorative/illuminative art fix). Looks Valkyrie-ish
And I'd better work on mine <_<. Thinking of going right to the edge for the concepts. Mohawk elf warlock, pirate rogue tiefling and the like.

Jason Rainville - ........ The character seems too small and she's the emphasis, not the background. Well that's my opinion.
I was thinking that earlier and I'll definitely make her bigger, but it said specifically in the brief that the top third is reserved for a title, so no important elements beyond that. Still though I'll probably 'zoom in' and add a few inches to her.

NARobles - It's a good drawing, but I'd say it does look more like a pretty boy than a girl -- I'm not trying to be harsh -especially on my first post!! But to make it more feminine there are 3 things I'd do....
1) Breasts- She looks pretty, uh, flat. I'm not saying you've gotta put gigantic bulging breasts, but maybe just an indication that the armor was made for a woman - and maybe curve the shoulder strap around to accentuate.
2) Booty- She's got a flat booty!! I'd stick it out a bit more, you could pinch the waist a little more, but I'd stick out the hip (the love handles) and round out the booty a bit and I think that would help and I think then the waist would be ok where it is.
2) Brow- The brow might be a little manly, maybe that won't matter as much if you curve her body right, everybody's different.
Anyway that's just my 2 cents. Hopefully I'm going to post mine later tonight, feel free to comment.

Wiggers - Very Nice! Her hand holding the end of the axe looks a -little- awkward.

Benu - I like the left a lot more. Looks less cramped.
Pixelturner - Blade wielding fighters 99% of the time are ready with their legs apart in a stance. She looks a little battle on top, not so on bottom.
Vorace - I cant wait to see how this goes. Very nice angle and pose!
Shardana - Im getting the bad girl/villainess from this. We need the heroine. I think its because you, as another said, have her looking too strong.
Matejkovacic - Framing can be very risky. Be careful. :)
Lenorekitty - I like th idea a lot. I think your should show some floor to put some perspective to the image.
Dekal - Looking nice!
MJ_alcazar- Loosen up some! Study anatomy and how armor works and fits on the body too. ;)
Hfix - I like your sketches! But Im not getting explorer from them.
EricT - Nice pose! Though you could draw a straight line from the mountain peak to the top of her head to the sea stack top. Mix it up and work on the composition to make it more exciting!
Sulk-sal- The sword is a little big, Id narrow it up and make it more sleek with the design. Also the way she is standing is a little odd to me, it shows in her bottom half a lot.
MnM - Her leg proportions are off, if that leg straightened out its be longer than the other. And th ebelt shouldnt hug her torso like that unless its sewn on as a strap. ;)
MichaelJospeh - Hey, Thanks! I was talking with a friend and I planned to make breasts more evident. :) The brow I wanted a little protruding because of her horns. And also Ill see about putting some junk in the trunk. :)

She's been read as a pretty boy twice so I've been asking how to make her more feminine.
I think the problem is mostly the pose. We see head and waist from the side but shoulders are twisted to the viewer. This is how the body bends while unsheathing a sword but it leeds to a typical male silhouette. (large shoulders - slender hip)
I would "exaggerate" a bit with extra small shoulders and larger hips to get a more female silhouette.
Ok maybe this time I manage to finish a contribution myself. No eladrin wizard yet, so here's my doodle.

I think the reason she's reading as pretty boy isn't the waist, it's the shoulders. They are very broad, and look even broader because of the armour. That coupled with the fact that she has a small chest size (which I totally approve of, by the way) give the boyish impression. (If I look at the image from waist down, or the arms, it's feminine enough.)
Otherwise I like her. :)

NARobles I like you're the best so far as far as character design, the line drawing is very clean and it seems like you're paying good attention to the directives set forth as far as things like leaving the top third part open. If you are doing this for the contest I'd just make one suggestion for your final peice, bring your figure in more because if you're leaving the .125 bleed around the edge then you're figures sword will be just touching the edge of the picture. Great piece so far and I like the colored even though it's early, can't wait to see it finished.

knightwatch - love the detail, and the whole picture gives a sense of strenght. However, you could shrink her upper torso and work a little bit on the eyes. :)
MichaelJoseph - like the idea and much of the detail. She looks a little too surprised to me though.
Hfix - I love the personality that is coming out. keep it up.
pixeltuner - I'm liking the wips so far. I can't wait to see it with a pose you like!
I hope I helped some!

Here's a quick sketch I did for this Chow. Haven't done one for a while and this one sparked my interest being a big D&D fan.
So my concept is Gisberte the ungroomed. Because in medieval type times....did they shave their legs and wax their unibrows??
So, let me know what you think.

Finally had the chance to sketch around on this...really wanted to find something dynamic...so this is where I'm leaving it for now...thumbnail is done and now I have some direction...
...time to get reference(gotta study up for this crazy pose/setting that I have in mind)...and get down to it
***she will have clothes*** just wanted to get a sense of the body...hope that persons aren't offended...
that's it for now...hopefully I'l be back soon with something closer to the final...
...comment if you wish..always appreciated....

Thanks for the feedback! I've got three more detailed thumbnail sketches, worked from the original sheet (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1842140&postcount=102). I've narrowed it down to three designs - a wizard, a rogue, and a fighter. I'm still not sure which one I want to do for the final, though...
There's some cool stuff here! I'll post some comments in a bit.

Time for some comments!
razorbjc - Right now she looks more like a warrior to me. I'm wondering about the positioning of her legs - she's got kind of a jaunty walk going on there, particularly with the left foot. I dig the perspective.
Sinix - Cool pose! It's got strong diagonals that work well. I like the pants, too.
jpedro - I like where this is headed. Good pose. My main problem is that, design-wise, her upper half and lower half are so different. Maybe introduce just a touch of that armor above her waist? I do like the contrast between a slender frame and chunky equipment though. I think there might be some weirdness with that right shoulder too.
risingfromashes - It's definitely dynamic, but I think you need to use more of the 'page' - though the arms cut across diagonally, most of the 'weight' is crunched into the right side of the frame.
FrumpyDog - /win
MJ_Alcazar - This goes for both - Absolutely loosen up. The armor design's got potential, but your proportions are off. Mainly, her head is way too big and the eyes are too high, but also watch the shapes of the feet and legs and the length of the arms. You've got to sketch in the general figure before you even think of shading or armor details. I've got the same problem. The best thing to do is get a good reference.
Timmy the Turtle - Yeah, she looks like a long-haired dude, but I don't care. It looks good. I actually like that you haven't made any concessions to 'feminity' in her armor. Maybe tweak the face if you want her to look more feminine, but it's really no big deal. The pose - particularly her hand on the sword - is nice.
feifeicreate - Really radical design, but cool. I don't know how well it fits the 'practical' part of the brief, but it's got a good sense of personality.
mcmatz - Difficult to tell where you're headed. I agree that she does seem rather sparsely equipped. The pose definitely has potential, but watch the tangency between the spear and the left edge of the frame.
thesaint - I like the design, particularly the skirt - it's 'fantasy practical' in a good way. The general asymmetry in the costume works well. It is slightly weighted to her right - maybe balance it with the background? *Edit* Color version looks good. Is this the final pose?
Pixeltuner - The costume design is quite cool, but I agree with you about the pose. She looks rather bored and slumpy. And also like she's bleeding from the face. Like your first one, she seems to be leaning back or pushing her hips forward more than she should. Moving the upper hem of the skirt higher to her waist might help too. Basically, keep the outfit, nix the pose.
benu - I'd go with the bottom one. Like you said, it has a better sense of character. In the top one, she's just kinda standing there. I also like the diagonal of the bottom figure better than the vertical line that the top figure makes.
Knightwatch - Cool pose, nice costume. The details are impressive, and there's a good sense of motion about the sketch. Watch your facial anatomy - the eyes are too close and too high on her head and her nose and mouth seem too small.
ManaBurn - I agree with the comment about the chainmail texture - it looks cheesy. This is a little too psychedelic for me too. Too many colors and too much saturation. The pose has potential, but her head and legs seem to face forward while her torso and arms are turned 3/4, which is somewhat awkward. I like the face and hair.
NARobles - She's looking significantly less boyish. It's a very evocative sketch, with a good sense of character and some nice diagonals holding the composition together. Good work.
Gib - Difficult to tell how this one is going right now. The pose has potential.
Gorgoleon - Also rather hard to tell what you're going for. The middle bottom sketch is cool - it reminds me of a zombie! Obviously that is not very helpful.
MichaelJoseph - Nice and dynamic, with a few good diagonals. It's not 100% clear what she's doing, but it doesn't especially detract from the image. She's a bit wide-eyed.
MnM - The pose and the anatomy are a bit wonky in this one. Watch your proportions - the upper half of the body is significantly longer than the lower half. They should be about equal. Watch the position of her facial features. The mouth and nose seem twisted over to her right. She also looks like she's about to slump over to her left. Definitely look for a good reference and don't touch shading, outline, or details until you've got the figure down.
Sulk-Sal - Her face and hands don't seem to match up. The hands are realistic and quite well-rendered while the face is this flat, big-eyed cartoon thing. I've also got no idea what that weapon is supposed to be. W-which part do you hit goblins with?
EricT - It's a bit hard to see the figure right now, but the background's coming along nicely. I'd watch the size of her hands and feet and how far back you put her ear and hairline. The pose has good dynamic potential, but I'm wondering if you want to leave such a large empty space to her left.
HFix - I like the staff best. The bending over pose is somewhat chessecakey, but it's got character. The eyes are kind of creeping me out.
DeKal - Nice. The opposing diagonals from the blowing hair and her knives work great. She's got a good deal of character already, but (as you said) give the girl some gear!
LenoreKitty - Cool idea with the lockpicking! There's something about the shape of her face/facial features that's weird, but I can't put my finger on it.
matejkovacic - The pose and the whole 'busting into the tomb' work well, but she seems kinda bored. I dig the boots.
shardana - Her arms seem very stiff and she looks like she might fall over on her butt. Maybe move a leg back or her torso forward for balance. The rendering and the costume design are coming along quite well.
Vorace - Dynamic, dynamic, dynamic. Good stuff. She's got a lot of character.
The Whistler - It's got potential. Her torso-to-hip region seems somewhat wide right now, but it's hard to tell.
jread - I'd go with the cloak and staff one. It fits the best with the background you're setting up and it'll give you a nice composition.
Wiggers - Great pose, great sense of character. I like the composition and the diagonals from her sword, axe, and arm/skirt a lot. Maybe her left calf is too straight? I'm not sure.
pjentaszeq - Nice armor design - heavy and functional. Watch that she doesn't lean too far forward. I'm also unsure about her left upper leg and hip - should that much of it be showing at that angle? I don't know.
Mirana - I like the armor idea and the dynamic pose. The middle of the sketch gets confusing - a bit too much going on right now, but it's definitely workable. I particularly like her face here.
Okay, I think I got everybody. Cheers!

I need to practice covers so I did a sketch.
Story. The Demon Princess emerges from the cave, standing victorious and mighty while her Black Imp carries the loot, stacking it at her feet. The ocean can be seen, because they're on some kind of isle, right? The loot makes the viewer go like "I want loot too like maybe go into the cave get some loot yeh I'd like some lot for my sexy drow elf lol I wonder what's in the chest if its gold I want dat too."

Thanks Mr. Squid, Phaeton.
LOL, that's what I get for ripping off death dealer chainmail, I should go find my chainmail photoshop brush. I felt like it was a bit too psychedelic too it was the weird shoulder pad that was doing it to me I think. I worked on it some more but not so sure how I'm feeling about it now that I got it where I wanted atmosphere wise. The models pose looked great but once I fabricated some armor shapes on her streamlined little body it just doesn't read the same. Still alot of time left, I think I'm going to work from scratch with the information I've been getting out of Frazetta's paintings and see where I can go with it. Thanks again guys.

So here is 2.0...
NARobles, thanks. After looking at her I decided to rework things a bit. Hopefully the anatomy is a bit better and gives a better idea of her stance.
Phaethon, thanks for a comment on the hands ^.^ but the hands and face should match up once I get finished with the line work. As for the large eyes, lets just say its a way I pay homage to the thing that got me into art.
The sword has been reduced in size, but the killie part is the blade which is facing away. The spikes are to keep it in line with her Tiefling heritage, as such you be seeing more spikes, buckles, etc on her armor as well.
Armor is on it's way, I just want to make sure I have a clear grip on the anatomy before I go and put it on her.
Frumpydog, that is pure an epic win. I want to see that sucker finished!

More imps, falling over spilling the golds and stuff. It's dangerous to have something at the same level as her head (she might share importance then, and that's no good). I was gonna put an imp there imitating her pose, but it didn't happen. The pants and outfit in general is haphazard.

Ok, I tried something completely different today just to get the creative juices going and get some dynamics in this one. I created 42 pages of basically random type-shapes with Alchemy while on the train and took about 12 of those pages (containing the most interesting shapes) into Illustrator as a library.
I basically then chose a shape which resembled a certain movement or action pose I liked (just by association, it were all black shapes :p) most. I then just started scribbling in a character in that random silhouette, while using al kinds of other shapes as decoration or design elements.
So here's my WIP then plus an image with my shape library. The one marked with red is the shape I used for the basic character shape. (a bit small I know, but just to show)
btw, lots of great stuff (again) everybody! This round is really smokin'

Okay, looks like I over stepped a little bit here. So thread is closed, and the contest is over for the time being.
Those that are particularly interested in this need to contact BrigandMo directly.
This may be continued outside of CA, or it might be moved to the non-paying jobs section. I'm not sure which at the moment.
My apologies folks. I'll post another follow-up note here in a bit as soon as I have more information.
CHOW 119 may be posted a little bit early to make up for the gaff.
As I said, more info later.

Now that it's not a CHOW, you're welcome to do more than one if you'd like. Since there is no final burning, I guess the best way to handle it will be to post your final work with an indication that it's final.

Oreg - I don't mean to make you keep apologizing...I'm just curious. Shit happens and moving it here isn't that big of a deal. :) Even if it'd been sacked all together a good lot of us got good sketches out of it.

Still baby steps. Altered proportions again, redrew the bottom half, changed the armor and face. I had some plants hanging over the front but it just clogged everything up.
(but damn it all if wigger doesn't already have this competition underneath his manly arm :P)

Hi,
I like in this female fantasy adventurer thing :D. The idea of Chow integrated contest was nice (pity because was canceled).
So, I made some pencil sketches of a thiefling female adventurer, a good hart one :D. About the tail, I thinking not to give her a tail...maybe something like hidden tail.
ikuru - nice thumbnails
chate noire - very nice colors, I like it. Maybe it looks too childish?
deKal - Niiiiiiiice! Beautiful pose, skin and all... probably the left arm has something wrong (jread)
jread - the composition has an interesting mood
Quinn Simoes - :D cool work! The thiefling female look really demonic

jason - like the expression, like the monotone colors. for me, the rim light is applied to sloppily and the torso is a bit crooked.
quinn - cool shit! the cropping on the left side bother me. its a little to close, and the knee and lower leg anatomy is a little too exagerated. looks like an animal the way their leg bends back. dope style though man
michael - awesome pose and action shot. the whole arm under the cape, weapons, shoulder, and that leg closest to the viewer gets lost though. all of the value and colors are extremely similar.
jread - comin out good..love the mood. her arms and hands are extrememly frail though. ha, the opposite of my manly arm problem. and id show a little highlight on the foot that is planted on the ground.
boswell - cool sketch, great pose. her neck and jaw area is very weird though. looks like rubber.
mrbo18 - i like the angle and composition but everything is too unfinished. it almost just looks like a color study. id render out the focal points more clearly and only leave the impression of some things.

Sorry to see this was moved off the CHOW. Here's some lineart I've been toying with. Couldn't come down on the side of either a warrior or a wizard, so I went for a little of both. More to come, if for no other reason than it's one more thing to show off.

thanks Jason :)
hmm the hands may have been an experiment gone wrong lol. I was trying to work similar to Justin Sweet's style...how he leaves some of the piece quite sketchy...I guess i didnt pull it off! but if her hands look out of place a will give 'em a quick paint over today :)
btw your piece is coming on great, its exploding with dramatic effect..but im wondering whether its a little too dramatic? She is meant to be a slightly experienced novice but your character looks like she has seen quite a few battles and is itching for more lol! I guess it doesnt really matter any more since the rules died with the round, but if you did want to tone it down a bit I would suggest the palette...maybe turn it to day time? I think when I saw your initial sketch, it instantly read to me as 'the calm before the storm' which I think suited it perfectly, but that feeling is lost now coz she is in a storm! lol
hope that helps?
EDIT: actually it doesnt seem too dramatic...I thought the stacks in the BG were giant waves until closer inspection, which was giving some real dramatic effect to me! so maybe emphasize they are not waves by adding some moss etc?

so what actually is the deal with this CHoW? as its in the non-paying section now does that mean its still all happening like before but just not paying? If we have posted our designs on this thread it doesnt mean they can just be plucked for the cover of a box for free does it?
J.Boswell - loving that sketch but she looks very young to me...maybe 16 at oldest?

Competition is still on, as in brigand games will select whichever they want and pay that person (or select the one they want and ask the person to adapt it for their cover) it's just not a chow anymore.
Either way it got my ass into making something :)
EDIT @ wiggers: I agree :( I'll finish the whole thing up though JUST IN CASE brigand games like, falls down the stairs and hits their heads and somehow doesn't select yours or DeKal's  I can always crop it/expand on the landscape later.
EDIT @ jread again: Do they really look like waves? :O That's odd. Maybe I've just been working at it too much I can't se the forest for the trees :D Anyways yeah I sis change the overall lighting mainly because, like you've guessed it, I'm a drama junkie. I always go for the most dramatic setup even when I shouldn't :( oh well, still fun.

Wow so many fantastic entries already finished! I admire the speed you guys work at. Seems like we got a lot of Tieflings in the mix as well. Tiefling is the new Drow!
Well I'm not too savvy at this digital thing yet. In fact, this is my first attempt at speed painting and sketching an image completely in Photoshop (normally I draw in traditional media). This is ALSO my first ever CHOW and it's been so much fun:)
It's still very basic and rough, but I'm pleased with the colors and the composition. I'm thinking of adding a cloak perhaps with a belt full of handy little D&D adventurer supplies like flints, scrolls, knives, etc. Possibly a sheathed rod since I'm thinking of making her a the Tiefling favored class of Warlock. We'll see what pops out by the deadline.

Whoa... now I know why I'm intimidated by CA.org.
The likely hood of me finishing this now is slim as I hit a major block and achieved nothing for 2 days, then took another 2 of fiddling to get the lighting right and I'm still not happy, but this is how she stands at present.
I have no idea how people work so fast!! Practise no doubt, thats what all the kids I've taught need, as well as myself!

Hello all. You are all quite an inspiration (and a severe intimidation!). This is my first post on CA, I'm completely self taught, so crits are very welcome. I have way more experience in drawing than I do in digital painting, and unfortunately I lack a tablet, so this has been done with a simple laser mouse.
Certainly a WIP, and I suffer no delusions of winning the book cover. But I figured I'd throw this up here and see what people have to say.
