Brush modes

Alright, I've finally gotten my lazy self to get involved with COW. I started and did some very basic work on my pic yesterday. Today when I loaded up my pic, the brush was automatically in "threshold" mode. Now, the only 2 brush modes i can use are "dissolve" and "threshold", everything else is greyed out, and the normal brush mode isnt even there. Could anybody help me out?

When I start a new item, the brush is back to normal mode and i can use all the different modes. I dont know whats wrong. Thanks

Im absolutely not sure and maybe im completely off topic but couldnt it be related to the color mode of the whole pic like lab color, RGB, etc.?

Before toshop used to change my color mode eventhough i didnt ask for it and it had this kinda effect on my layer modes for instance.

i was in "indexed color" mode. Dunno how it switched to that. Thanks for the help :)
Well its too late to finish my image now. :( ah well i know how to fix the problem for future reference.
