Hi everyone, my name's Michael Bakerman and I'm a visual artist struggling to get better in drawing, animation, and digital painting. I've been drawing ever since I was little but never had any classes taught to me until i was in my senior year in high school. Soon after I had taken some drawing classes in college, now I'm a Digital Media Visual Language student at the University of Central Florida aspiring to get into the digital animation industry, be it movies or games, and am desperately trying to hone my skills. I also love creating concepts of characters and environments, and I hope to someday make it a profession :)

The first one was based off Gargant from Onimusha 4
Second is a cybernetic scientist gone mad with his own technological creations

Cool concepts bro! It reminds me of HR Giger’s work, very organic and gritty. Keep up the good work ;-)

First is a Prince of Persia video game concept sketch for the Princes armor, as well as an ally NPC (or possibly playable character) that could join him in a large battle. He reminds me of Kratos from God of War.

Second are Dark Elf concepts from the Elder Scrolls video game series.

Awesome stuff, your drawings are incredibly detailed and the shadows are very well done. The human-type faces on some of them are a little off-balance; the lips on some of the female faces are positioned a little off to the right.

thanks for the compliment/feedback. I see what you mean with the lips off to one side, as I've noticed it sometimes too when I finish a face haha. sometimes I lose my sense of placement when I'm working with face details. I'll keep it in mind. Once again thanks :)

I got a PEN TABLET!!!!! :D Hooray!!!!
First one is a quick sketch test of me using it for the first time. Next is a photoshop painting i decided to rework and touch-up. My previous version of it isn't too great IMO. Others are just pencil sketches Ive done the last couple of days.

Just a couple more sketches. Ive been doing a TON of other sketch work, Ive yet to scan all that in :P I also have a good amount of sketches from my life drawing class with nude models. There'll be a big art dump by me when Ive got a good amount of free time. Until then...

These two aren't life drawings, just from imagination

Here's a painting Ive been working on over the weekend. Started out as some quick doodle, but I decided to give it a shot and liven it up. Also attached is some other concept designs/sketches Ive done.

Some Photoshop paintings I did since early December, maybe even late November.

For your digital paintings I'd recommend you start and plan them out as a pencil sketch first. It seems your proportions and design suffers when you sketch straight in photoshop. This will also help when your planning out your lighting, and values. Before getting into colour I'd recommend you do straight greyscale paintings. This will give your a better sense of the values and composition.
Also it seems you are not setting your tablet to pressure sensitivity, for your opacity. Maybe you are using a mouse to paint these? This would help you blend colours and a whole range of benefits. There are many tutorials posted around these forums which should answer alot of questions about digital painting techniques.

Yea I like to call this stage of my painting development the "Paint Dabs" era haha. I've been having a hard time getting un-distracting blending with my tablet. I havent tried setting my opacity to pressure sensitive yet, and that seriously sounds like an ingenius idea...hahaha. never thought of it once :P
I'll also try planning out beforehand. I usually do when im doing pencil illustrations, but i tend to just jump right in in photoshop.

Thanks much for the help and feedback. I really appreciate it.

Here are some of the life drawings I did last week. The first two are 1-5 minute ones, The next two are 15 minutes, and the last is 20 minutes.

I'm currently having struggles with getting down the scale of the female torso and hips and their proportions, as well as the shape of female calves. As a bad habit I tend to make scratchy long strokes to try and get them down as quickly as possible, i think i need to plan out my lines a little more carefully, and utilize boxes and skeletal shapes more to rough it out correctly. Gesture Drawing brings out the very best self-critique! haha.
