The Crustacean Elk or reef crab as it is more commonly known, lures its prey with its two horn like growths.

The Crusty Elk uses large pincers on its head to capture prey! On land it looks a lot like a backwards lobster which is why it spends most of its time in the water.

Somehow it ended up this way! It barely looks anything like the original sketch... But at least I think I'm getting the hang of my tablet.

I found this idea too funny to pass up. This prawn had decided he wanted to be superior to his kind and so he donned coral-horns to become the King Prawn Elk of the sea. Fear his powers of looking silly. Photoshop CS3. about 2hr sketch.

Hamsta: I really like the motion and perspective in your entry. In fact, a lot of your DSG entries have really good colors, composition, and energy. I also think a lot of your entries could benefit leaps and bounds if you fill in a few details near the focal point using a small plain round brush.
burrito: Interesting design! I like how the front and hind legs are completely different. Very creative there.
Gorgoleon: Beautiful texture work and colors. It looks like a real creature. Funny thing is we do tend to name sea creatures after land creatures they only partially look like, if at all, so I can totally see someone uttering "Elk Crustacean!" when they see your monster.
prepsage: Your entry reminds me of, well, evolution. This just might be where the first elk came from. Love the form and perspective.

so here's my reactions then:
tommoy: love the goofey design, it's real fun!
arteater: love that, looks like a cool monster for some rpg game.
prepsage: this is the second image I saw from you and it rocks again.
it's just epic. can't believe u just pull that out of your ass :)
bluez3023:it's simple but I like the style of drawing crisp n clean.
gorgolean: there's almost no elk to be spotted anymore but your play with light is inspiring. nice.
bombchu: that's just cute ^^
earniesthings: you couldv added more depth by adding some grass in front of the creature.
attic: that is one crazy drawing
goran: love the atmosphere and darkness, awesome
kolpar: good lineart just would've made the horns a bit more organic.
jhgoforth: how the hell did he get that string around his ears?
nightblue: thats just awesome, lovely design, awesome colors.
burrito: again, awesome. love the organic flow and soft shading.
dabble: apic pose and light, nice one.
shram: haha, its like one of those disney baby versions :D
hamsta: interesting that you put two into play, the design is a bit vague but there's nice sense of life through that piece.
silentbrain: that's just evil, ncie textures. it makes it look like a deepsea creature.
aryul82: looks more like an elephant with the horns below like that.
jan3II3: nice dreamy, fantasy like, a shame most of teh creature is hidden..but I guess it adds to it's mystery.
come to think of it, mine looks overweight :D

happy with this (first thing in ages ive done that has been satisfactory for me)

finally closing in on my goal of getting quicker. just less than an hour for this, i'm sure I can go faster, but the main thing is that it felt quick to me to do and I wasnt labouring over it or noodling in the detail too early - my biggest habitual error.
will crit later, headache coming.

ashton Reading this is a little hard. Both ends of the thing look pretty similar, and the appendages don't look quite functional.
I like the graininess and of the background, the colors and the small detail work.
Hamorhage Your elk does seem overweight :P
I don't see crustacean though, more of a freaky dark Gothic gigeresqe sort of deal. What's with the skull face.
Nightblue I know what you mean, I really have to find some way to put that extra detail in.
I love the colors, very fitting for the family, and they pop right out of the bg. Good sense of form, but the "horns" seem out of perspective.
It's also a little bland. Maybe a more exciting crop is in order, or something more in the bg.

@hamsta - i think you critted me there - thanks - i agree on all counts about the horn perspective and lack of dynamism - I shall concentrate on dynamism next dsg.

A friend advised I do some grayscales to get a better understanding of colour and all that.
C&C would be lovely.

Elba the Elk was just minding her own business when out of the blue *ATTACK!* she didn't know where it came from, and it was gone just as quick as it came (no pun intended)

But at least it did have the decency to send it child support checks a few months later. nonetheless the child suffered from an poor upbringing. you see the mother would never admit who his real father was, and this troubled the poor lad.
