Concept: Concept:Hindock Bug

The explosive bug, commonly known as the Hindock lived throughout the Jurassic period. Gradually Dyeing out due to its explosive birth. The females of the species can only give birth to one Hindock at a time, and as the birth is rather violent (ripping through the creatures womb and outer skin, organs etc) it causes the female to die. The females have no desire to be mated with, making the males quite obviously, very agitated. Anyway, there all dead now so who cares!

Concept:Fire Mantis
The males reside in small trees and bushes eating other small insects and small mammals. the females lay their eggs on the ground, usually below a selected males territory . each sack the female lays is filled with 20 to 30 eggs covered in a film that evaporates rising up into the trees as a mist. When the mist reaches the sensors on the males abdomen , It causes the sperm sacks on the abdomen to expand and bust shooting up the slope on the thorax spreading all throughout the misty area, slowly falling and fertilizing any nearby egg. The male always dies after the explosion .

Concept: Shapecharger beetle
Ever heard of the 17 year Cicada? Pretty obnoxious isn't it? Now imagine something 3 times as big, 10 times as ugly, and 1,000,000 times as dangerous, to both trees and animals alike. Can you picture it? I've provided a picture. Now do you see it?
Like the Cicada, the Shapecharger beetle also has a long gestation cycle, 1000 years to be exact. And you can thank whomever you pray to for that. Because if or when the piercing drone of this creature permeates your eardrums, you will most definitely be paralyzed at the rhythmic vibrations of one of natures true marvels in engineering, and most brutal of designs.
Found primarily in trees along the rare river beds and moisture rich areas of the African Sahara, this varatious carnivore uses its unique body structure and chemical makeup to create a small but very effective directed explosion, similar to those used by demolition engineers to sever supports in buildings.
Attaching itself to the leg of creatures thousands of times its own size, the Shapecharger uses its specialized abdomen along with its hooked front legs to latch on and wrap itself around the legs of unsuspecting victims. A highly evolved nuerotoxin which acts to paralyze the area is quickly injected into the soon to be severed limb. Then the fun begins.
Through small valves on the underside of the V shaped undercarriage, made of a super spongy and energy absorbent skin, particalized sugars and hot air are released filling the small chamber between the abdomen and the skin of the animal. Then by way of a static charge built up through the constant vibration of the beetles wings, a small spark is created that ignites the sugary substance and thanks to the hard carapace of the beetles back, rumored to be stronger than steel, the blast is contained and directed away from the insect, cutting through blood bone and tissue alike, rendering the animal hoofless, pawless, or in some rare cases handless.
Usually traveling in packs of four or five, these 3 inch beasts can dismember and devour a full grown water buffalo in a matter of days, as long as some predator doesn't steal their kill first.
So the next time you're in the Sahara, hunting for big game, steer clear of the watering holes and rivers, especially the ones with trees whose branches have all been blown off, and watch out for what may be hunting you. It may be smaller than you think.

Concept: Explosive Bug

The explosive bug has its name from the way it gives birth to its young. As the creature grows so does its head with the little eggs attached. the creature is a unisex and when is born the creatures in the sacks are already growing. So this means that at birth the creature is pregnant; this creates a high birthrate, thus a higher survival rate. But once the eggs become too heavy for the creature to carry (varies from creature to creature, thus the failure rate too), the creature topples backwards, busting the eggs, creating a miniature messy explosion, releasing all the young in the process.

Thus the creature may forever be named the explosive bug, because no matter how it lives its life, it will forever have the destiny to explode in the end.

Dante's wasp...lovingly nicknamed the Vengeance fly by the advanced forces of the new earth expeditionary teams redefines the term "hostile".
Not much is known at this point aside from the fact that this creature despite it's size is quite the advesary...attacking in swarms it has been known to leave the standard (5) person team as little more than a slurry of porridge like organic matter...
When threatened the wasps will attack en masse attaching their abdomen to any unfortunate victim...pulling away and tearing it's self in two... effectively ending it's life...in the process a membrane is ruptured which begins the chemical process for the inevitable explosion...
It goes without saying that staring down the barrel of several thousand of these little monsters is that last thing that any N.E.E.T team member will see, should one be so unfortunate to find him or herself in that position...

Concept: Ignismortis
Consept: Ignismortis, or as some call it, firewidow, has got its name from it’s reproductive behavior. After mating, male starts to grow fertilized eggs in its abdomen. When eggs are becoming ready to hatch, the sack holding the eggs starts to glow, as the chemicals are concentrating. When this time comes, male starts “dancing” in the air to lure predators. If lucky, predator only eats the sack, but if not... thus the name firewidow. When predator eats the egg sack, the chemicals inside predators stomach and the chemicals inside the egg sack combines creating a explosive compound witch
explodes in few minutes. Predator dies, and now thehatching larva's has fresh food for consuming to start a new generation.

Concept: Explosive bug
The explosive bug has a container filled with an organic explosive, produced by his "bomb glands".
This substance is kept in the upper part of his abdothorax in a thick capsule that is thinner on the top, so when the explosive bursts it makes a directed
explosion, outwards that doesn’t significativelly injure the bug (most of the times...), but maiming the stupid predator that tries to eat it (despite the warning red head).
However, this protective bomb isn't free of costs and can explode prematurely without apparent reason, leaving the bug with no protection and
little potential to find a receptive sexual mate.
Also it is common for the bomb to go off during mating, toasting the bugs sexual partner.

The male Bumbler, also known as the Suicidal Bumbler, usually lives what many would consider a great life. It spends every moment of it sitting stationary while being brought food by the female drones. For most male Bumblers, the only time they'll ever have to move is to mate with the Queen.

The Queen also has a sedentary existence, never moving from her location under any circumstance. However, the energy required to birth the numerous offspring the Queen is constantly pumping out is more than she could possibly ingest in a lifetime.

Because of this, evolution has provided the Bumblers an interesting means of reproduction. The energy to birth the new Bumblers is from the Male's sperm, which, it spends its entire life hoarding into a membrane on its tail end. The chemicals involved are very volatile, and the sack itself is entirely unstable, but energy rich and in a state the Queen can use for birthing.

However, when a Bumbler hive is under attack, the males are roused from their sedentary lifestyles and sent on a suicidal attack. The highly reactive chemicals in their sperm instantly explode if the membrane is broken, which is a blast capable of burning through skin and bone.

The males main weakness is that it can only fly for around half a minute before its body weight catches up to its tiny wings and it falls to the ground. Making the animal even worse off is that the males have never flown before they are called to action, and recently pheromone analysis has shown that the male Bumbler is literally being sent the signal to try and mate with the attacker, presumably because it is incapable of rousing itself for anything other than sex.

Concept: Paddekkerid Skater
The bug synthesises zinc(II) diazide in its modified hindgut, secreting pellets from the end of its reinforced abdominal stem. The pellet is detonated by clapping two specialised pygidial plates together, propelling the bug forward in a powerful burst of hot nitrogen gas that may carry it hundreds of meters across the frozen carbon dioxide flats the bug is endemic to (The mook should be wearing a space suit for the rather uncomfortable environment of Banchez Furen IIB). Pellets of desiccated faeces may be expelled with incredible velocity, becoming dangerous projectiles to the unwary who may startle the creatures into fleeing.

The rear legs have evolved into vectored halteres/fletches allowing it to steer fairly well, whilst the original wings have become vestigial due to their fundamental inability to vector appropriately.

An effective defence in case of an attack on the species, preventing predators from killing multiple beetles, whilst at the same time keeps the bug safe from exploading on its own.

This is a specimen of a "Explosive bug". His real name is Xb2, a genetic modified bug, special created for only one reason: to destroy. It has an enormous destructive power and it is used to erase anything on the face of the earth :xpld: . The bug contains a "cocktail" of explosive substances. It has only one drawback: it can't breed. It is created in laboratory conditions by infecting species of bugs with an active mutating agent.

Concept: Flying Fire-Needle
Flying Fire-Needles are one of the most fear-inspiring insects to swarm the Amazon. Known for the sound they make when they attack, “Poppers” as they
are also known as, can take down both larger predators as well as prey in a few short seconds. Fire-Needles travel in the thousands, and individuals will
sacrifice their life for the survival of the colony. They can release a highly flammable gas from a sac located at the rear, and simultaneously send an electric
charge thru two pairs of antennae that extend on either side of the sac. When the charge hits the gas, an explosion occurs propelling the needle bearing
head and exo-skeleton forward into the target. While the legs, wings, sac, and internals are lost in the process, the head stays connected and dozens of
Fire-Needles attacking at once spells doom for the other party. Fire-Needles will usually not attack unless provoked, however, they are known to search out
small mammels that they can feed off of (blood suck) when their favorite flower nectar is not in season.

These insects live deep within the lost cave complexes, of the ancient tribes of the serpent people of eons ago. It was believed that through vibrations and other senses on their antennae these multi legs insects could sense their prey and approximate the distance to throw their explosive biochemical projectiles. Once the explosion and chemical reaction had immobilized the target the insect would leisurely consume the remains.

Thumbs up for the mushroom, but you better invest more effort to the creature next time ;)

Had to vote for eraserfoot...great composition...body has mass/ voulme...and it's a interesting mostly non violent take on the brief....

-Gearhart...love the wing effects and the render...but your bug had no bang(explosion... not artwork...have to make that clear)...only thing that kept me from the button...you even got the little hair to show up aginst the rim light...

-Nubb...Love the colors and the comic nature of your work...totally won over by the stubby legs...

-Scorge Kick ass render...maybe my taste buds are a bit underdeveloped but the mute palette just didn't do it for me...maybe it was just a contrast thing (or a splash of something saturated to make it pop) since most of the colors are down shade it got a lil washed/monotone...great work all the same though

-peg... I really like the simplistic shape and the fact that you can get a sense of motion from the leg placement...I would love to see that thing wobble around...

And I won't leave myself off of this (hind sight 20/20 and such)...I'm a lil pissed at myself for not putting in more time...it was a first post and had fun but I could have done better...the wings and abdomen just scream of laziness/rushing...ahh well...lesson learned

see ya'll around....

went with risingfromashes as well...really liked the concept and I've been stung by wasps and bees so I could relate to it hahaha... but the concept, the rendering and everything were really well done.

Tough choice!
Finally decided on Nubb. Nothing like some explosive, sloppy, schloppin' up of leftovers to get the juices flowin'. Great style as well. Presentation, layout and pure coolness achieved.
Some notable honorable mentions:
Humboldt Squid: Hilarious! But very serious at the same time. I do think the creature itself could've used a lot more attention, but the concept and presentation are great. Who wants kids anyway?
Eraserfoot: Great rendering. Let alone a killer concept that I'm sure will make every woman want to give birth in some sort of violent fashion. Glad to have ya.
Gearhart: Your rendering actually made me work harder on mine.(Seriously) Unfortunately missing the explosive element.
Saturn's Gate: Your style is definitely one of a kind, proven by your "Deep" entries. I love your understanding of color and contrast, technique that others would kill for and over-all great sense of mood, but this one doesn't do it for me. I really look forward to your future work, and always refer to your past work for inspiration.
Arteater: Being a big fan of the double feature myself, I truly appreciate your time and effort to render two sexes of this species.
Espenboi: Killer Style! And that's coming from a guy who dwells on tightness in a rendering!
Rising from Ashes: Badass story, and rendering to boot. Legs?
Snarfevs: Mook? I thought they only said that in New York? Man, You had me sweating as a I checked the progress of entries. Your concept and rendering especially made me want to do better.
MJ: Still here huh? Great to see you man. Work's getting mucho fabuloso. Always nice to have an old COW pro in the mix. You keep me working that much harder.
Everyone else, I'll see you in the next round. Excellent effort all around!

humboldt squid: The concept is ok, I just have a problem with the texture, a little more time with anatomy and texture would work wonders for this guy.

eraserfoot: Cool design, imo: I like your color choice, the bug's contrast to the background is great. I would like to see that little guy a little less cartoony . I really think the bugs left front leg came out nicely as in perspective. great work.

Bllues3023:Nice shape, I think the contrast could be pushed further in the anatomy above the legs, and maybe a new sketch for the female instead of cropping and re-coloring the original design. Nice concept all in all,

Gearhart: Wow he came out nice, I live that green glow, you captured it on the money. the action of the wings worked out well , my only crit. is the legs, something seems wrong with the anatomy, one of my favorites so far

saturns gate: I like what you have created here, its tough pulling something out of mid air, I couldn't tell you what this looked like if I seen it on the road, but I would know its a bug. I would like to see the contrast pushed a tad more. Nice job :D

scorge: Getting better and better, Keep pushing yourself I like where this guy was going. Crit time ! The stinger thingy on the end of the abdomen seems a little large along with the body. As for moving wings I suggest making one or two wings with extremely low opacity fixed in position, every time I see this guy I get confused and think the white curves are spider webs in the tree :P I like the face a lot, those eyes are wicked. Great color choice with those red and blues.

Nubb: This guy looks like he was fun to paint, nice composition, another one of my favs :D

Relic: well, if you would've put as much time in the dirt surrounding the insect and the anatomy of the bug as you did the mushroom, I think you would have a little better concept. maybe another perspective on the head would also help, a profile shows the truest shapes of a creatures head, straight on is confusing sometimes, keep it up.

Rist: Overall nice concept, I have some issues with the lack of exoskeleton in this bug concept. the teeth trow the design a little off as well, I suggest some bug mouth part studies :D

espenboi:Nice work , I like the way this bug came out. A little more reflection seems in order, but good overall

risingfromashes: I think you did a fantastic job, vary clean and nice work on the color/contrasts in your design, love those eyes

AP: nice work on your composition, altho I would like to see the bird in another perspective, maybe coming at us head on. nice design and concept

Saurus: yours made me laugh, great work on keeping it simple. Love that cooked bird :D

voraz: no a bad concept, I think the head is a little off center in the unexploded bug. and his legs look a little robotic.

asomata: great work, my suggestion is bigger wings, and sharper edges, Take its from me, I have been tore up on her about my soft edges :)

Adele: I like your color choices, it seems the appendages on the head are a tad over sized. Great work over all.

Snarfevs: Im liking your bugs concept and design, Ii think you have some nice textures going on, and the fire is brilliant .

Peg: I always like your entries, this one is no different, great work with them blues blended into them greens. Your texture and anatomy of the legs work perfect. Great work

CallOps:yout texture on the guy is really good ,along with your color choice and design this is one of my favorites

tsujni: wicked design, you have a way with making thing delicate and strong at the same time, glad to see you in this round.

artjedi: nice colors and design. you have a wicked style

Arista: nice concept

artiphats:that bug looks like it could hurt if you stepped on it :) I like most of your design, My only problem is the mouth parts and wing size, it seems he is too bulky for those dinky wings .

azathoth: I think some darker contrast in the shadows would make this guy pop a little more, also some sharper edges. keep it up

Michael Jaecks: Fantastic work, I didnt think I'd see ya this round and then you go and bust in with this awesome piece .Great work, my vote has to go to you :D hats off

Great entries by everyone again. My vote went to scorge for the nice rendering and great story, MJ close second for me I think scorges' description just put him over the edge for me. Peg nice simple design well rendered. Let's get to killing some boredom.....Next!!!!..........

Thanks alot for all the comments!

Way overdue here but I voted Scorge, I liked the eldritch (spelling?) look of the bug and really fearsome face area, the muted colors work well all around but perhaps a tad more saturation around the very nicely detailed head to really grab the attention. (then again dont listen to me, I always go overboard)

Two very well deserved top voted images in Michael Jaecks and Eraserfoot, great works everyone!

What I find odd about this one is that no one did a swarm insect?

I mean... Famously bees die when they sting (not actually true, but they still risk their lives to inflict pain), so I'd have thought someone would come up with a hive insect that defends itself with living grenades?

Ah well. I like bugs.
