View Full Version : The Imaginairy Game Studio

Hi, and welcome to TIGS!

We are a bunch of artists who really did not want to lose our inspiration during the aching days of the summer vacation, and also, we wanted to boost our portfolios a bit, and so we made our very own studio, and now we wanna make a game, or at least go through the fun parts of it!

For now, we are a bit short handed, so we are looking for more hands on deck! You want in? you send me, or algenpfleger a PM, and we'll get back to you. We will all be given asignments twice a week, and you will be expected to finish them on time and with reasonable quality (in other words, no stick men and such)

For now we are:
-Mischeviouslittleelf (Concept artist/Art director)
-Algenpfleger (Senior concept artist)
-Ravn (3D artist)
-Daniel C (Enviorments and props artist)
-lilnebo (Junior concept artist)

So on to the game setting:

We are in an early stage of the industrial revolution, but instead of coal power moving thowards refined oil propultion, they move for advanced steam techs. We are in quite a corrupt democracy, which makes it quite possible to make gameplay move from high on politics to low end underground consipracies and shoot outs, or knife fights, whatever fits you better.

For reference you can use anything, from early steam inventions to the first daimler mercedes engienes, even though these are gazoline powered, the tubes and intricate valve structures are awesome. The background for the civilization is referenced to Britian/France/West Germany during the post victorian age to the same places late 1800's.

The coruption has reached so deep into society that it is literaly on the verge of collapse and that is where our game will begins. We will follow our main character through the social revolution following the degration of government power in the lower levels of the cities of our imaginairy world. the anarchy will climb higher and higher in the social classes, and then the eventual collapse, followed by some new beginning...or that is what I am thinking now, any additional ideas will be appreciated:)

So for now, we will start working on this, and see how it goes.

All the best

Ok, so we have another concept artist on board; Welcome lilnebo^^

Now for a temporairy list of things to do:

For now we need ideas, and a lot of them. We need enviros, civilians, characters, different citizens from the highest aristocrats, to the lowest beggars. We are in a steam punk age with a good dose of fantasy, so we have a lot of wiggeling space to go on, and we can play around with ideas if we want.

Things to do:

-Enviroments:
Low levels (open sewers, beggars, thugs, whores, pirates)
Low/Medium levels (tight living spacesworkers, laborers, quarry men, blacksmiths)
High/Medium levels (large, elaborate buildingsbankers, militairy officers, beraucrats, doctors)
High levels (Palaces, Baroque-esque buildings, Politicians, wealthy citizens, political royalty)

-Bi Characters
Low levels
Low/Medium levels
High/Medium levels
High levels

(We need lots of ideas for these, so feel free to do some even if you have not been assigned them)

-Techs:
cars
trains
guns
heating
power
lighting
and whatever else you can think of that can be steampowered, or propelled by steam. It is also good if you can find alternate ways of transport, flying transports, for example, are always fun.

Now the grim thing is that I am leaving for france in 11 hours, and I will not be here for the next 7 days, so until that time DIRECT YOUR QUESTIONS TO ALGENPFLEGER^^

He is more than competent and should be able to answer, if not, 7 days is hardly that long, I am sure you will be able to wait;)

all the love;

This obviously lacks any kind of plan or structure... but I think it's gonna be fun :D
Hmm I think I'll try to make a list of tasks tomorrow seeing that our AD has gone to France right when he's needed the most.

So we have this victorian-era, steampunk, foggy-london kind of metropole. The political system is a democracy, corrupted and falling apart. I'd also love to have some horror elements in there.

First of all, we need to gather up some references, so everyone (does anyone even read this?) feel free to post stuff in here so we get a feel for what we're doing. Let's also channel our communiation in this thread.

Do you think we need an environment designer? Because I'd rather focus on characters and tech, since this is what I need to practice anyway. I also asked sketcheth if he wants to join, I hope he does. Cause we need, like, lots of designs.

Ah we'll see. Let's make this a fun learning experience.

Oh Al, yee of little faith!

This is all carefully planned, IN CHAOS!

MUHAHAHAHA-oh you are still here^^'

Well, dun think anyone is reading this quite yet, but it might be because, we are posted in the community activities section, which means people dun circulate here that much, but maybe they will^^

For enviros and props I have engaged the benevolent Daniel C to help us and he has graciously accepted, so lots of love to him!

We also have another young'n helping out; lilnebo, so our ranks have gained strength!

ONWARD I SAY!

Well hey guys, this sounds like a blast. I'm in. Same as Hannes, I'm a bit of a character artist, however! I would like to learn everything else a bit more. So I'm willing to use this is practice. I'll try to be as jack-of-all-trades-y as possible.

People this is gonne be Great.
Yea i agree with sketcheth *who rocks* i also wanna use this as a chance to practise all types of design, even if it means like practising enviros so i can try and enviro, may not really be something am good at *or can do at all* but i'll use this as a chance to learn. So am going for an all rounder concept artist :P
Now to kill you with some reference of steam engines, and victorian-ie stuff
I must admit i hate these peoples sense of fashion *if they have any*

oukay... some pretty early ideas. I gotta do lots more stuff and variations. but ideas are coming along well. I have to go to San Diego for a few days, i think until next Sunday, so i dunno if ill be able to get online. But ill be drawing stuff, that's for sure.

Soo, here's just ideas. The objects are just to get a bit closer to the univers cause.. well ive never done steampunk stuff before. So, they're just ideas. Ill try to do some more variations and stuff. The trains are pretty much the same. I thought of doing some different train tracks, where only one lane would be used for inner city roads, and more lanes for outer city roads. I still havent figured out what would be the most benefic for upper class transport, but ill get there.

The steambox would be some kind of power supply unit made in different models, depending on it's use (housing, transport, durability, power, etc etc). The support it has would be where you use it, while the box itself would be how much power and durability it has.

The residential unit is a bit like the house in the fifth element, where everything is compacted. But this one would be easy to move around since it's all fitting in a cube. It would be for the workers in the lower parts of the city. The steambox for the whole place would be in a trap below the floor. It's still pretty early, so ill keep looking around the whole thing.

About the enviro, humm well, i though making some kindof vertical separation would be cool. not too high, but pretty squary, since it's got some old technology. hummm ill keep looking on that too i think... haha

anyways, get/stay busy guys !

Hey guys what's up :D

Yo sketcheth, glad you said yes! Do you peeps think we're enough now?

lilnebo, those are some great references. Thanks a ton for those! Kinda crazy to think that people actually did wear this stuff.

Dan! What the hell! Now I look so lazy! Loving those ideas on the energy sources, those ornaments are cool too, seems like something we can incorporate in a lot of things, maybe so that every class of society (should there be classes? I think it would be interesting) has some designs that make them easily distinguishable.
Those train designs rock too, hey how far do you think the level of technological development should be? Any flying stuff? Or just ground and sea? I don't really know lol. I doubt anything with a steam engine could fly. In Last Exile, they had some kind of element caled Claudia (or Cloudia?) which was lighter than air and served as kind of a propellant at the same time.
That mood sketch and the enviro are totally cool, I'll try to do some of those too. Yay. Tell me more about that vertical separation you were thinking about, sounds really interesting! Awesome man, keep that shit coming!

Hey watch this or listen to it, it's awesome, Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway, crazy good costumes, especially when that ensemble part starts at about 4:30, mindblowing. Inspiring music too, you can just click "Play all" in the playlist and the mood starts flowing lol.

Humm, I started out by doing a few character sketches, just trying to get a feel for the universe...
The first dude could be some kind of canal worker/engineer/technician, don't really know, the second one's supposed to be some policeman, then two high-society chicks and one pilot kinda girl.

lilnebo, thanks ! get to work !! :]

algen, thanks for the vid. huumm i dont really know either, i mean right now we can still do whatever comes to our mind since the ad is away (arr .. haha).
The classes i was refering to was low/medium low etc ... :]

cant wait to see what you guys come up with !

Hey folks! I got a temporairy internett connection here in France and I wanted to check in! Some real good stuff going down here I really like the broad spectrum that is evolving here!

I wanted to share something I thought of; Clockwork technology.

It fits perfectly into the theme, and it compliments the steam stuff. I would like you to keep it in the back of your mind^^

Keep Busy Folks!

Mischevious, I know you asked me for some of those more socialite, aristocrat like character in my sketches, but these I already had and I decided I'd post these just to help fuel the fire until I can get some of those down. I do have some more elegant costume designs down, so I suppose those could work, most of it remains to be seen though, I suppose.

So here's what I've got, not much, but a little marker here, a little pen there, some pencil in between. It's been loads of fun so far. I'll try to have some rich people in really soon! And guys, just to let you know, the work done so far is just gorgeous. Love what's happening here. Keep it up, everybody.

EDIT: Apparently my images failed. So I added more this time! Sorry if I'm going outside the boundaries...

Hey folks! Some really nice stuff coming up here^^ I just got back from France, and I am exhausted, so I'm gonna get some hours of sleep and scan whatever I can tomorrow. I wanna thank you all for working as hard as you have on this, it really makes me happy.

I believe a few comments are in order:

Daniel: Very nice ideas, aching to see some more. Awesome sketches, and I hope to see more stuff as soon as you get back^^ Is Comic Con this time of year?

Anyhoot, looking foreward for more.

Algen: Very nice sketches, good and loose, and the firl with the flying cap gave me a few good ideas, also it is fun to see to you use the typical british countryside dress type, or maybe that is just me crossing wires. Anyways, keep busy!

lilnebo: Nice body of work and a teeming ocean of ideas! Keep working them and see if you can refine some of them. Also remember the age we are operating in, so I think sub machine guns and such are a bit out, or maybe not...we'll have to keep working that:)

Sketcheth: Seems pulling you on was an equivalent to shooting a golden flying thing! Awesome sketches, and the little steam droid gives new steam to the ideation process (hehe "steam to the ideatoin process", where do I get it from...)

All good, see ya'll tomorrow^^

Woot! I haven't been in here for a while D:

lilnebo, wow you're working hard! Great stuff! :D Sketcheth too! You guys make me seems so lazy.

So our AD's back, huh? Then give us some guidelines so we have something to aim for! :D

Mischeviouslittleelf
July 17th, 2008, 07:31 AM
Well, right now we need to aim for something to base the rest of the project on, art wise. We need to work out how this society of ours evolves and works, how the classes are connected and conflicts that keep them apart, we need ideation for everything, both small and large, so I think we need to work on the broad spectrum for now.

Algenpfleger, you can keep working on the first idea of yours; maintenence workers, as well as machinery and other doodads that are connected to them. You can feed of Daniels ideas for use of steam and be creative on different areas of the city that need maintenance. Do enviroments of these places and if you find spare time between this and your SP bonanza, then you can give me some ideas on bars, saloons, cafeterias and their employees etc^^

I believe the rest of you hva gotten quite specific areas to work on, so snap to it! I want to see results by saturday:D

Work hard and the rewards shall be plentyfull, or so they say^^
