P.O.W.! Challenge 11-A
Deadline: Sunday, July 27, 2008, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.
Topic: Strange Bedfellows
Now that DEEP is over, it's time to get this mess back on track. First, the Giant Bugs theme got buried by DEEP, so I'm going to repost it again at some point in the future--which is why this Challenge is labeled "11-A.". There is a major change in how we'll operate -- the Challenge will be posted late Sunday night--Monday morning at the latest, and will run THREE WEEKS with NO overlap. This seemed to be a problem with a lot of people, and hopefully, the extra time with no overlap will give us a better chance to do something a bit better than quicky sketches.
A bit of clarification for those of you unfamiliar with the term "Strange Bedfellows" -- it comes from Shakespeare's The Tempest ("Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows." It was spoken by a man who has been shipwrecked and finds himself seeking shelter beside a sleeping monster. It's often used in modern speech as a comment on strange political alliances. You can interpret any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color.
You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a tentative maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.
P.O.W.! Special Challenge 12 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, July 27, 2008.
Make sure you've read everything above. I've made some changes to the deadline date and Challenge timing.

Since I seem to be back into actually drawing...I think I'll do this. Panels are the cooliest.

I am currently designing for CHOW and COW. I might combine those designs into a comic, as 'friends' or even lovers. Could be a strange and unique story...
July 11th, 2008, 03:52 PM
I'm posting this as a WIP since I haven't erased away pencil lines or drawn on the trim marks yet.
July 11th, 2008, 03:54 PM
Im working on my second panel but it's quickly quickly turning into the third panel with a missing link....
July 11th, 2008, 03:57 PM
If timing works out, I'm gonna be in this one. Got an idea two nights ago that combines politics, religion, evolution, UFOs and sex...heeheehee

what is bleed size? In fact, what do all those terms meen?
July 14th, 2008, 10:00 AM
Dunno bout comics, but I assume it's the same as graphic design.
Bleed=Total size of paper
Trim=Size the paper gets trimmed down to
Live Area= Safe Area- All text should be contained within this area
July 14th, 2008, 10:44 AM
Yeah. Ilaekae described the meaning of the terms in pretty good detail in the Read This First sticky thread.
[Edit: All right. I'll Make a different page here].

I've been doing comics for a few years, and recently work and life got in the way and I completely put it aside. Now I really want to get back to it, and POW is a great way to get those storytelling muscles pumping again.
Here's my first page pencils (well, they're PS brushes, really...but they'll pose for pencils for argument's sake).
July 14th, 2008, 11:01 AM
i was scrolling down the page and wondered if no one would go with the original meaning from shakespear - sleeping. not That sleeping... thanks for strengthening my hopes :) Also I really love the artwork; will browse by at your sketchbook...
Besides I don't like the excessive nudity in the upper pages. Not that I'm square, but I think it's wrong on a page, every little boy could stumble upon when typing in the name of a video game in google...

arttourney: Thats nasty. and her vag is too low Im pretty sure.
prespage: Thanks for the descriptions, I appreciate it.
Chate Noire: It shows that you have been doing this for years, great expression and flow, cant wait to see more hopfully on a regular basis.
July 14th, 2008, 05:27 PM
Where did the vagina go??? Damnit I miss everything...
July 15th, 2008, 11:58 AM
Thanks Zeitwolf and MonkeYoakum!
Here's the second page. There were supposed to be 3, but I feel another one would only be stretching the point. I'll see about that.
July 15th, 2008, 06:09 PM
total loss of inspiration just hit me
i need romance to restart my creative enginery. damnit.
I like your story chate, can't remember where but I've seen that story someplace, I think in a movie...maybe it was Band of Brothers? You may not have seen it, but it shows something like it. It may have been that codetalkers movie too. I've seen all the war flicks from the past decade or so...
July 16th, 2008, 07:03 AM
The scene from chate's new page somehow reminds me of "Im Westen nichts neues" ("All quiet at the western front") by Remarque...
July 16th, 2008, 11:54 AM
Page 1, inked.
July 16th, 2008, 04:52 PM
I'm not submitting this, it's just the only image that came into my head and i couldnt think of anything to do with it. If anyone else could run with it that'd be awesome! Thought Ilaekae might appreciate it at least...
July 16th, 2008, 10:38 PM
Ilaekae when are you going to post some panels, its been three days now, jeez
July 17th, 2008, 12:12 AM
Hahahaha...I'm starting in a couple of days, Dear. I 'm still hassling with sheet rock and shower tiles.
Chate Noire: I have the distinct feeling this is NOT your first time on a comic. Looks good...
Melonby: Did you get my PM?
July 18th, 2008, 08:49 PM
I'd love to do comics but I suck at it. It's one of the hardest thing to do. Well, not to suck, I mean to do comics. You really need to master everything, and I don't. I guess the only way to learn is to get into the fray.
I did something which is pretty literal... perhaps. We'll see where it goes, because I'm improvising. Who knows what beasties may lurk on a desert island.
July 19th, 2008, 12:44 PM
jesus... that was funny ...
July 19th, 2008, 03:11 PM
wow! some really awesome stuff in here already. Chate Noire - your pages are off the hook man, really cool.
i'm on a holiday right now so don't know if i'll make it this round, i have an idea but it's crap and totally not original at all. will try to work in out though. keep up the good work everyone :D
July 20th, 2008, 02:31 PM

July 27th, 2008, 05:51 AM
Mydrim, I guess that's a good thing =)
July 27th, 2008, 04:56 PM
July 27th, 2008, 09:35 PM
Arttorney, what am I gonna do with you? :P
I'll do the poll in the morning, so anybody needs just a few more hours past the deadline, I won't be in a position to notice. :)
The next Challenge is gonna be a nice change--we've actually got a script this time! (Be up later tonight...)
July 28th, 2008, 12:02 AM
My idea was strangely similar to Melonby's. My scanner and watercolor paper do not agree - tried to fix it as well as I could.
July 29th, 2008, 02:09 AM
both of you people
July 30th, 2008, 01:46 PM
No time to finish mine. I had some roughs for page 3-4, but it needs a few more pages.
She washes her face at the beach. It's too hot for clothes (!). She gets ambushed by a land squid (alien) who also has crash landed.
July 30th, 2008, 02:33 PM
Yayyy!!! Roughs are better than the nothingness a lot of people have made.
