Hey guys. I have been thinking for a while about this but i wanted to know if anyone has done this or if u guys think its a good idea to do it or not. What im thinking is since i think i am probably depending too much on the digital tools i think i should get away from all for like around 6 months- 1 year. And during that time do only traditional work. paper and pencil or ink all the time. do studies every weekend on canvas etc etc for like 6 months. and then go back to digital. i dont depend on my digital art to survive right now so i can stop doing it and its gonna put me on a very uncomfortable place since im not use to do anything traditional. i wanna make a little schedule of things and goals i should look for every week or month or something to keep myself on track and so i can be organize.

so pretty much all the time i usually spend on digital ill spend it studying and practicing by myself. i have been self taught all this time so thats no problem.

so what u guys think? any ideas or suggestions before i start shutting off everything? :D

You don't have to stop using the digital medium completely, dude.
Find balance.

It's not about the tools, it's about what you do with them.

No harm in learning new tools mind you, but I'm not quite sure how useful eschewing digital entirely will be.

Perhaps just regiment your schedule a bit more steady - like a 80% traditional 20% digital time frame for awhile and then slowly get it closer to 50/50 as you feel more comfortable.

My worry is that by shutting off one and diving into another you'll stay unbalanced with each respective medium - when in reality both have skills that could intertwine in producitve ways.

don't you have requirements- plates or homeworks that are easier done digitally?

I not... then go ahead.

thanks for the response guys...im actually surprise hehe... with me i have to go a little extreme on how i learn things i know if i give too much room for digital ill rely too much on things i should not.

thanks for the response guys i think i found what im gonna do. camidole has a good way to approach it. maybe ill stick to digital very minimum. i draw everyday so maybe do 1-2 day digital and the rest with just me and my sketchbook. i love sketching so im gonna bring it with me to try capture everyday life things. we will see how it goes. :) thanks again!

As they said, you don't have totally detach yourself from one thing to focus on another. Besides, trust me, there will come a time when you will be bored by one medium for long and you just want to try out another. Just strike a balance.

I can kind of relate. My PC got raped by malware Saturday and I thought I was going to lose years of shit (I'm working on saving it all right now, which is taking for freaking ever, then I've got to reformat) which upset me at first but then it made me realize that I rely on the computer too much. Photoshop, the internet and its plethora of digital references, while wonderful things, have made me lazy. I need to use real paint once in awhile and definetely I need to get out more and draw real people.

I think life (temporarily) without layers and Ctrl-Z could be a valuable learning experience as long as you don't get dogmatic about it.

At the very least it'll force you to think more before you make a mark, gotta be good.
