View Full Version : AmishCommy's Studio Journal - Update 07.26.05 (poopy environment)

I started a Studio Journal on my website. it's the place I drop everything i did in the studio or in the sketchbook for the given day. This is an attempt to get myself to draw more often than I have been drawing lately.

Here's an image I did in Photoshop with the wacom. It took about 15 mins to do. If I spend any more time with the wacom I get bored and start longing for traditional media.

I did this almost a year ago and, like most things, i never finished it. This is a character for my friend's comic called the Vanishing Sun. We started developing it in college but it never went anywhere because Alex quit school and we lost contact with each other. Since then I've been doing some doodles and character designs for it when i feel like it.

Alex, if you stumble on this post get in touch with me.

been slacking a while.

It's getting harder to find time to do some werk fer myself. I started doing some simple still lifes to get back into the groove. i'm trying for speed and color/light. Never really practiced this. especialy in oils.

i did this in an hour. just in time to slack some more (missed Carnivale last night.) i also attached the pics of the still life set up. the colors are a bit off due to the digital camera. i had some problems with the apple. couldnt get the color right. it had more greenish yellow in it. also looking at it juxtaposed with the pics i notice some faults in the actual rendering of the fruit. whoops

have fun ripping me apart - i know i've been doing the same to a bunch of you. feel free to return the favor

quickie self-portrait in oil. it's tiny. something like 7x4 inches. I've never worked this small in oils.

Good detail for such a small size. God knows i dont have enough control with a brush to do that- and now you know that too. :p

these were dome some time ago back when my fountain pen wasnt broken. i loved that thing eventhough i smacked the shit out of it for not werking. the black and white drawings were done when the pen was running out of ink.

awesome journal!!

ive been doing still lifes recently and i found the best thing is to look for shapes. if the negative shape around the fruit doesnt look right then the inside shape wont. there isnt only the shape of the object but also of whats not there!!

for example the apple is tilted but in the picture its perfectly straight. if you look again at the still life youll see that its just shapes and you use colour to represent the shapes.

im still learning myself but i hope that helped a bit!

keep it up!

havent checked this one in a while.. nice stuff.. i like the ballpoint sketch feel to them.. are you making the faces slightly deformed on purpose(like jon foster does)?

AmishCommy
November 23rd, 2003, 10:53 PM
Main Loop - i dont think the deformed faces are intentional. i just put the pen to the paper and hope something good will come out. sometimes there may be a meathod to the madness but usulay i let my subconsious do all the hard werk.

as fo jon foster - that dude rocks. he took me and my friend lana out to lunch at the San Diego comic con. that and he hooked us up with some mad contacts.

Actually. I already found a challenger. But thanks for the offer. I'm up against Seung Ho. I have one hell of a battle ahead of me. As for the reason I have little work up... I don't own a scanner so getting something scanned is a bit of an ordeal. I tend to work in traditional mediums for any of my more serious work.

Yeah, coming to these boards does help to get inspiration..:)

Also, after having seen your thread, I've yesterday inmediately added a digital sketchbook to my site, where I'll be posting my doodles on a daily basis.....:) Like you, I was looking to find a way to push myself to produce something at least everyday, and i think this digital sketchbook feature will do just that for me...:)

Keep up the good work, maybe even drop by at my site sometime...:)

Cool stuff you got here. I think in the latest update the character gets somewhat lost in the background. I'd also like to see more details in the weapon and the fire, since that is what i seem to focus on most, and that is where the least detail is.

Maybe you can steal some of sparth's fire (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11197).

I'm way too lazy to bother with perspective so to make it werk and keep the spontanaiy i modeled some simple shapes in Maya and then used them as a guide for these sketches. Here's an example:

Sniper stuff is lookin sweet too.Um, you're way better than me, but, why don't you just throw down a freehand perspective grid instead of makin a 3d scene?!

mr. smith - thanks.
I'd vote for nader if I can be guaranteed that kerry will beat bush.

Silvertone - i'd like to check out this Alberto Breccia fellow. Do you have a link to his werk online? is there any werk of his online?

There's several reasons for me not doing freehand perspective. Although i know all the rulles and tricks of perspective, I never trully practiced them and thus i really suck at it. That and i don't have the patience for it. Plus all them lines get really confusing. and worst of all is the erasing. I HATE eracing. I'd rather start something from scratch than erace. I mean i do it when neccesary but i don't like it much. But there's another reason for faking the funk using maya. Besides practice with a program that may help in the job search, when you create a scene in maya you can always move it around and find a good shot, a better shot, or new way to illustrate a scene. its really a great tool.

ok as for my productive sunday (yeah right) here's something wierd. I know it doesnt look like anything special but this was somewhat hard to do. I went shopping for some art supplies today (there was a sale) and i got some graphite sticks. I took the HB one in my left hand and the 3B one in my right and tried drawing with both hands at the same time. the 3B in my right hand is the darker line.

This first one was fairly easy beacuse if i think about one type of hand movement and move both hands at the ssame time i'm able to get a pretty symetrical image (took me just over a minute for this one):
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-04a.jpg

This second image was a lot harder. it is really hard to control 2 seperate hands doing seperate tasks and seperate movements at the same time. I took my time with this one (about 5 minutes). once again the darker line is the right hand and the lighter is the left (in retrospect i probly should have used 2 seperate colors to illustrate my point):
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-04b.jpg

A long time ago i saw some learning chanel program where this asian monk used to write caligraphy with both hands as a method of meditation. He wrote not just different words but different sentences at the same time (all were part of the same poem or something). the most amazing of all, becides the beauty and preciceness of his caligraphy, was when he used 5 brushes utilizing his hands, legs and mouth to write 5 different lines of text.

i am slack masta....havent updated in a while.

I've been getting wednsdays off work consistantly for the past few weeks so I made myself try my hand at oils again. still not happy with the results. I'm trying to paint some simple landscapes just to get away from my "comfort zone" My 2 major chalanges here is the fact that i'm still trying to figure this whole oil paint thing out. and the other is that i'm using a tiny canvas (6x8) which i'm not used to. i like to work large.

well here's the damage:

this one took about an hour to do. for me anything over 20 minutes becomes a big mess and looses its spontinaity. my major issues with this is that the values are mostly the same. makes everything too muddy.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-14a.jpg

this one took just over 15 mins: i got tired of it real quick
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-14b.jpg

round 2: just over an hour. dissaster
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-14c.jpg

this one i did last week. took just over an hour. same problems as the week before.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-21a.jpg

here's the B/W image off my camera. Values are almost non existant.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-21b.jpg

i'll try it again this week hopefuly with better results.

if anyone has any advice or pointers i'm all ears.

ok, here comes the big post.

I started taking a figure drawing class at the local museum. I figured that i havent done it for almost 2 years and i was missing it.

NOTE: all the really yellowed ones was me messing with the contrast in photoshop so that you can ake out the lines

this was the first day:

these first 4 were fairly quick warm up gesture sketches

this took about 15 mins
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_04-13e.jpg

these last 2 were me strugling with a long pose. I get too impatient when i have to do long poses in pencil. i finish them off too quick

Composition sketch (love the right shoulder)

Day 7

I started this painting in the previous class.

This was disasterous from the begining. we spent an hour trying to get the perfect pose. No one could agree on a final. The model's poses were all too stiff and that made them boring. when we finaly decided on a pose she relaxed to take a break and the pose turned out awesome. when she came back from break though she messed up the pose by switching her legs. no one noticed untill we started drawing. it seemed wierd. then i noticed it but by then it was too late. and this is how the sucking started. the next class we picked up where we left off. and the sucking continued. I would have done better and more if i would have just started from scratch.

the smeared leg happende while driving home like a maniac. it actualy made it better.

UUUUUUUUPDATE!!!!

damn was this thread beginning to get neglected or waht?

So i moved to NYC and took my swet time getting a new comp and getting myself situated. But lo and behold - NEW WORK!!!!!

So i figured that its about time to graduate from Photoshop 5.5 (main reason is that i needed the whole folder structure in the Layer pallete - it still sucks cause i cant get extensis to work properly on PS CS) also my new comp is a little wierd and won't let me install the drivers for the Wacom. so this was done with a Wacom that only works like a mouse (no presure sencitivity and no erase)

http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2004_-_11-16a.jpg

What's really cool about the new PS is all the fun things i can do with the brushes. The piece above took forever to do and its not finnished but i got this nice textural look to it that resembles the way i normaly paint. Here's a detail:

Been cranking all week doing storyboards for an indie film. I went a little overboard with the finality of them. I know i'm spending way too long on them (especialy for waht i'm getting paid) but i want them to look sassy cause they'll be used to sell the movie to investors. Can't go into details of the movie. Still don't know a lot of them anyways. These are some of my favorites.

hey cool my vote counts!! i got you a 4... keep up the good work. its good to see you focus on spontaneity, it will be interesting to see if you can spend more time refining some pieces without messing them up like you say happens, i guess try workng tight in just a few selective areas if you dont do that already

AmishCommy

tensai - thanks dude, I'm all about the rough stuff. there's more energy there.

Hillartsympho - thanks for the rating man. I was doing my best not to be an ass and give myself a 5 (or any rating for that matter). as for tightening up -- I was looking at HPX's thread and mining it for info on his process. I got some tips about PS brushes and went to town on a quicky:

http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/2005_-_01-06a.jpg

so here's waht i did with this piece:

I started off with a quick gesture of the skull in PS8 using a small round brush. Then I rockes a dry brush for some texture. After that I printed out a copy and threw some ink on it. I use a toothpick to add some quick gestural texture. then a nib for some touchups and the splater. (I loves me some splatter) Then is scanned it in and played around with the colors in several multiply layers. (i'll post the layers over the weekend for all to see) the whole thing took about 2-3 hours but the only reason is that i was experimenting with the brushes and color.

AmishCommy
January 9th, 2005, 01:50 AM
here are some of the individual layers for the piece above.

Here's the tighter version of the initial sketch. as i said in the previous post, I did a quicky sketch in PS then layed in some tone and texture with ink and a toothpick.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/skull-A.jpg

then a background color on a seperate layer.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/skull-B.jpg

new layer> with some push and pull of color and value. note the introduction of complementary cools:
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/skull-C.jpg

This is waht it looks like on top of the background color:
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/skull-D.jpg

Then I wanted some green in there to give it a pukeish color. I made a green layer and changed the layer to overlay instead of normal. Then I pulled out some highlights and darks with the eracer:

I've sorta been meaning to do a tutorial of sorts.

so here's the start. This is generaly how i work. this is not recomended becasue in reality its a stupid way to work.

1. I start making some doodles in PS. I sould be thingking about waht I'm trying to show and composition, but in reality I just try to let go and let my subconsious drive my hand. The poses I end up doing turn out the same and fairly static. but occasionally something interesting happens.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/WIPs/vamp01.jpg

2. then i throw down some color to see if something happens that sparks my interest in the sketch. I like the one with the chick resting the gun on her leg. This is a character of mine and I sort of have a vauge story that I can attach to the sketch.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/WIPs/vamp02.jpg

3. I like the forshortened leg so I start developing it. So far everything is going good. I use a round brush with the opacity set to pen pressure (thanks HPX). Added some complimentary color and started checking my values by converting to greyscale. So i decide that I want to comit myself to this sketch and try to make it into a finished illustration.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/WIPs/vamp03.jpg

4. here I crop out the other doodles and flatten all the layers (i had the line work on layer 1, initial color on layer 2 in multiply mode, and a color overlay on layer 3). Then I bump up the image to 300 dpi at about letter size. I like to work big.

Then I move the arms a little to fix some anatomy issues. left shoulder in a little and right shoulder a little higher. (in reality to save yourself time you should work out the anatomy and composition sketches first then start in with the color.) I fix up the face a little but looking aty it now It looks way off and will definetly be changed.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/WIPs/vamp04.jpg

5. this is really not a big step from #4 - extend the canvas and work out the left leg in a new layer.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/WIPs/vamp05.jpg

tomorrow I'll start fresh on it with more work. Also try to convince friends to pose for reference. Tune in tomorrow night.

AmishCommy
January 27th, 2005, 02:35 PM
did another hour on the WIP.

Over waht little sleep i got last night my mind resolved the composition slightly. So the back story is that her teammate was just injured by a terrorist bomb. Her Teammate is a HUGE dude that is not easily injured. She managed to get to the terrorist first - cornered him in an alley. I basically have this loose framework for a story and i'm playing around with scenarios and story ideas.

6. So here I basically addes the dude on a new layer. Had to have him lean on something so I added the box. I started adding some backgrounsd elements but then got rid of them because they didnt help the composition and I was doing it haphazardly without much thought. I'll work on it a little later.
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/WIPs/vamp06.jpg

7. Added some color. Gonna change the lighting to come more from above rather than the left corner. De-emphisized her face so that it stops distracting me. That probably what i'll work on next.

AmishCommy
March 14th, 2005, 01:38 AM
Moysturfurmer - thanks dude. I redid the image a few times becasue i wasnt happy with the lighting. Still not entirely happy with it.

the boards were for a movie called "The Pure" The movie was scrapped last month. I didnt find out untill Friday though. I even started the next batch of boards. It was supposed to be a break out movie for this director, Z (he's got some wierd arabic name that i can never remember), I met in NY. It was also supposed to be produced by Jeff Most, one of the dudes responcible for produssing all the "Crow" movies. The movie was scrapped to work on a Live action version of the "Razor" comic. That's what the previous sketch is for. I think i was supposed to keep this under wraps for another week but fuck it. I'm not getting paid enough to care. The Razor movie was writen by Most. and so far the script sucks. I can't get past the first 10 pages on it. Z is planning to change a lot of the script.

http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/CGNetChallenge/girl-Ideas05b.jpg

this is charcoal and chalk on velum. its a lot of fun to play with. the Charcoal glides on like paint and comes off similar to the same efficiencey as working with a photoshop eracer. spent about 20 minutes on this one. started off with the head and then the drawing kinda evolved by itself.

AmishCommy

i am such a slacker. fist update in 3 months.

here's something i started a few weeks ago and now i'm sitting back down with it and i'm lost.

so it started out like this (some washes layered in PS with some effects on top. got the technique from Scott Robertson):
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/funeral-proccession01.jpg

and here's where its at right now:
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/funeral-proccession02.jpg

and a darker version
http://www.arkadyroytman.com/drop/StudioJournal/funeral-proccession03.jpg

so this is supposed to be a funeral proccession. i havent gotten that far though. the things in the foreground are monks simillar to the one on the bridge. havent done any details on them either. so other than the unfinished portions, any problems you see, or critues you have, lay them on me.
