This ugly mofo was completed as an art test submission for a game company.
Bare naked polys:

Textured model (no scene lighting, just 100% ambient):

His stinking ugly face (notice the burst blood vessel in his eye):

And if you are interested, a couple of process timelapse thingies. First a GIF of the texturing process:

And last a 32 meg AVI of the modeling process:
Sorry - Have to take down the AVI - it smashed my bandwidth limit and the Host shut down the site. When I find another place to host it I'll put it back up.

I want to be like you when I grow up! I NEED to be like you! Don't tell me that 21 is too old to take me as your Padawan :)
I'm amazed by your work, what program is that? Lightwave? MAX? I know for sure it's not Maya.

Nice textures and all but those neck-muscles are blown waaaay out of proportion. Looks really unnatural.
Otherwise great model.

nice work! really cool modelling and texturing, in some parts the texture looks a little stretched and you've got some bad texture seams bu hey i'm just nitpicking :D
which codec did you use for the video? i can't open it :(

In case anyone is having trouble with the codec - here is a selfrunning Techsmith Camtasia file. It's just a ZIP (if you need to know) renamed with the codec included. Just run it.
Sorry - Have to take down the AVI - it smashed my bandwidth limit and the Host shut down the site. When I find another place to host it I'll put it back up.

Great creation.
He reminds me of a skinhead.
I do agree that his neck muscles should be reduced = looks unnatural for a midsized man to have such huge neck. But its all little things.
I love the way you textured it. It is very clear and detailed.
Did you win that contest and got hired?

Fix this!

I would be so ashamed of myself if I would call this thing finished. Dont think they will accept you with a model like this. there is loads of competition so you need to make sure you send in something awsome

I know nothing of 3D but this looks very interesting. By the way, we get a 404 on your movie links (.avi and .exe)... :( *snifle*

Yep, sorry egerie and everyone - I had to take down the AVI's - they broke my site, the bandwidth was too much.
Thanks, Evil, for the very useful crit pointing out the weak spots on the model/skin. I agree with pretty much all of your concerns. I don't consider the model finished - it really does nedd a couple of polish passes - and the parts you've pointed out are worth fixing. Luckily fo me, they didn't neccessarily want to see a "finished and highly polished" model, they just wanted to see what I could personally accomplish in the specific time limit - so when the clock ran out - I had to turn the model in. I am proud, however, of what I was capable of doing in such a short time span. That much said, I do have a lot of growing to do as a modeler, no doubt about it.
Boris, thank you for the compliment and the crit.
And thanks again to everyone as well.

Evil, please watch the tone of your replies when critiquing, I would say your response borders on insulting. This forum is for helpful comments, that are not given in condescension.
Now for my critiques.
I love the model from the waiste down. Boots are killer. The bottom of the ribcage appears to sag, and looks like it needs a lift (literally) the latissimus dorsi, or wing muscles, start out way too low, Right now there insertion point is the illican crest, instead of the bottom of the ribcage and spine. The forehead, while it lends character is very square as Evil pointed out. For the texture. I think the pants and boots, again, are the strongest part, and have a nice painterly feel. The shirt blood stain is great stuff too. But the skin is kind of wierd. The definition is painted in with hard lines, and doesnt look very natural, The shadow tones are not colored, so the skin doesnt look very translucent, and the light bake overlay is a little too severe. As many have pointed out, his next muscles are kind of strained, and those shoulder muscles are just some kind of out there. Waaaay too big methinks. The nose texture also looks a little stretched on the sides. A very nice model to be sure, but still has alot of areas for improvement.

srry poopinmymouth (hihi made me giggle). I was in a bad mood, I did the same on a other board, so srry Wetterschneider. Glad you looked past my rudeness and responded in a very mature fasion.

Evil, you can critique me like that any day. The truth hurts sometimes, but as long as you show how to make a fix, and you clearly did!!!, thats constructive in my book.
Wetterschneider- It is looking good, but listen to Evil. I would also take out some of the lines you have describing the anatomy in the arms and back, or tone them down or blur them..... especially the triceps, shoulder blades, and back of neck- its just not correct.
I checked out your site and I'm very impressed with your experience and body of work. I can see how time constraints affected you for this model compared to the rest. Good luck!

How many days did you have for the test out of curiosity?
Looks awesome man, but I think evil/boris hit the critical points.

benzo, it is not what evil said, it is how he said it. Its fine to tell somoene there is stuff wrong with their work, but do not insult them while you do it.
Thank you evil for clarifying, very professional of you

What program did you use?
Im a complete beginner at 3D modeling - i want to know - How did you get the layout of all the skin so you could paint over it?

Evil, your apology is appreciated - I guessed that if you simply wanted to be a jerk - you would not have taken the time to draw up and submit such a detailed markup.
Benzo, thanks for the additional comments, the truth doesn't really hurt... much. But anyway - I'm glad you visited my site and saw some of my other work.
Poly-cube - the art test had a 7 day time frame - but I was slammed with other work for the first few days - so here's how the schedule went down:
Monday - set up working environment and rough modeling. 3 working hours.
Tuesday - detail, sent it out for some crits, applied crits. 4 working hours.
Wednesday - UV mapping. 3 working hours.
Thursday - Texturing. 4 working hours.
Friday - Texturing. 7 working hours
Total - 21 hours.
Poop, thanks for watching my back.
Boris, it's all Max, for the modeling and the UV layout (which is the flattening of the skin, if you are unfamilier with the term). I sketched the details using Deeppaint, and then painted the map in Photoshop.
I want to make a detailed tutorial of the UV layout process - and I will post it when I finish.
Thanks all!

I really light the luminosity of the guy. Great tone and color. As far as the model goes though, his bulbous upper forhead is distracting to my eye for some reason.

Good news - Rogue13 has helped me out by putting the timelapse video up on Fileplanet:
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetquake/polycount/tutorials/video/paramilitary_punk_video.zip
It is 64 megs long and full size and full color, a much nicer version than the one previously posted.

Wanted to drop by and say thanks for the video. Nice and thorough.
I think evil did a service with his crit. On first look, I did not notice the UV seams on the sides and other places. I liked the glowy color of the textures so much that I overlooked the seams.
I can see the neck muscles like people said. Or the sharp creases in the head. I thought the neck was like that as part of the model style.
I still like it.
Thanks again for the video.

I think it's pretty damn good for 21 hours work. Thats around 2 working days to turn around a half decent model. Most games companies would be pleased with that figure I can tell you...The last company I was at our character guy was taking around 5 days to complete a character so I dont think you're doing too bad on that one. Crits are fine, but I'd still say for that amount of time you've done a great job.
Nice one
