All my stuff is in boxes, because I'm going to move as soon as I can sell my house (yes, now. I am so screwed). I'm going nuts without my art stuff to play with. Rather than unpack boxes or buy more of the same art supplies I already have packed away, I decided to try gouache again. Always sucked at it, but hey...time has passed.
Even most of my kitchen is packed, so I couldn't rustle up a suitable little plate to use as a palette. Then I found this thing in Whole Foods. It's a cutting board made out of a material they call paperstone: recycled paper and resin. Very dense; heavy for its size; slightly matte surface; dishwasher safe; pretty much impervious to everything. I could wish it was gray rather than black, but it's great with gouache (and possibly oils) because it gives you an opacity check.
They had another size up, too. I don't even know why they have the hole in the corner. It's almost as though they were intended to be used as palettes (only this one is too small for a thumb). So I guess they're hangy-uppy holes. Anyhow, check it out:
