well good start my man, i can tell from the studeis of the heads that you have some knowledge already. these are good things to study, like teh cloth that you were studying and the painting is good to mess around with. just focus yourself, bust your ass and you will improve and this is a good way to see that improvement.
good luck

Buenos dibujos Yiako. También me gustan los estudios de valores (no se si se puede traducir así a la brava), los últimos que has hecho parecen más detallados que los primeros de todo, sigue así!

i really like your line drawings a lot, i'd like to see some modeling of forms though,

and just from going from start to finish on the paintings i'm very impressed with the rapid progression..

these are great Yiako. I like your experiments with acrylics and inks (though you may not.) The red goblin face is cool and full of character. Having said that I think your caricatures cool too. Especially the big nose guy with the tiny body and the surprised/whaaa? girl. Refs are good for supporting the doodles, but when it's straight from the brain it's gold.
awesome work -steak
(cool line work too with the hatching and such, and I'm glad to see some Alien refs. as it's one of the greats)

I hear you! I am very big into reference drawing right now and reference painting. I am finding that my ability to judge color and value is increasing with every passing day as I do this.

Hi Yiako,

I can feel with you - I couldn´t draw for 2 month and everything´s feeling clumsy at the moment. But I think this is just temporary and you´ll be catching up fast. BTW I surely see development in yourr drawings, you get better definitions and the emotions of your faces are getting better and better, too.

lookin sharp a' hell yaiko! I really like how you nail an emotive (art word? or is it a word at all?) face and character with a few pencil strokes. It's very signature yaiko. you might want to think about doing some of these in ink, or even with a brush (just a thought). and yes the predator does puff blunts when he's not hunting human prey. (I like the predator, but I see what you meen.)

these get better and better. You have pleasant illustrative quality about the faces and figures, like caricature with good anatomy. You could try putting value in some of them digitally... just a thought.

here here! (in agreement with sir foster)
Yaiko, your work is turning into something very awesome. I find that a key to great artwork is to build off of good, existing techniques but add something personal to create work unique to anything preceding it. I can see that in your work. keep pushing it dude, i'm eager to see mo'

Really nice progress you're making here! I like the way you theme your studies, knees, clothes etc.. I think I will start a similar sketchbooks (yes I will copy you hahaha ;) nah just kidding, but you got me fired up here :) )
Keep posting, I have this thread bookmarked ;)

good stuff in here... proportions are a bit off most of the time, and i believe its due to your approach, which seems to me like a lot of focus on the outlines then shading em in.. theres a general lack of solidity in structure.. try to think more in terms of 3 dimensions, especially when working from a photograph.. i hope you are balancing the photo drawing with a lot of drawing from life as well..

steak-tron
March 14th, 2004, 01:09 PM
- I think your proportions are off Yaiko, if you’re going for photo-realism. But I suspect that’s not exactly what you’re trying to do. This goes along with my aforementioned statement. If your proportions were on they wouldn’t' look like your drawings. That’s not to say throw proportion out the window or that proportion is not a necessary element, but that it can be manipulated.
When I look at your sketches I do see solidity and structure (no lop-sided eyes), but an exaggeration of proportion - like caricature. That horse is one of my favorites, the head is too big for the body and the eye is huge, but it looks like its popping out at you, and the eye fits, its just exaggerated.

Hopefully that’s what you’re going for, even if it's not I still like it.

You probably could kick up the value. I got a toned paper sketchebook and it helps to find the lightest point in the drawing - an important part of understanding tone. If you keep a white charcoal pencil nearby its a great way to add solidity because it instantly sets up a mid tone. When shading its good to be additive (add ground) and subtractive, and to move back and forth

I hope that helps, sorry i wrote you an essay;)

March 19th, 2004, 03:39 PM
great work yiako, i always envy the amount of work you do and how disiplined you are, just keep at it.
i also envy your lines and shading, mine are always so sketchy and i always have trouble drawing "defining lines" you seem to have that nailed!

i'll be back:)

hey yiako my friend!you know that 2 options lung made
so everybody can tell him what they would like?
i voted for as many as quicker.one thing i wouldnt like is that he just made some quickers before logging in to post whatever.dont take this the rong way.i envy the amount of work you do (blah im repeating myself again, ... but its truth)
but if you get tired you should have a day or two just for yourself not for your thread.and do whatever it is you would like most even if it means not finishing anything up.
wouldnt want you to see drawing as an obligation after a time.

blabbling...
anyways, i said all this because i got the impression (from these last few ones) you werent very into them whilst doing them.
mostly a bad thing.
i might be rong tho.

and sth else.one thing i looooove!its amazing and i dont know if youve noticed but seems you have something specific.
your own style is buildin up.
i mostly rape other peoples :(

gosh darnit yiako. Your thread is awesome. I've been aggrevated when people say this is beginner stuff. I dont think so. You got a lot of creativity and i love your style. In fact, I just don't know why your not getting any stars. :( it sucks man. Any way lemme give you a tip: even though you have great skill try to take more time on just one piece of art work (maybe take a good while on a mechanical pencil piece.) I'd love to see what you can do then.

this stuff is coming along nicely, yiako...I'm impressed!

nice studies as always. I like the pen ones you did a while back, It's good that your working on values and color but your strength is in the lines. See if there is a way you can incorporate that into the color work. (like scanning a draw and coloring over.)

keep up the goodness.

hey Yiako, nice studies! you keep progressing.

One thing i'd take more care with is the size of the heads because sometimes they're too big (como el "cabezón" :) ), do you draw the head first? if so, try doing the body before the head instead. I have the same problem and I've seen that if I do the body first I can somehow minimize it, but when I start from the head most of the time they come out too big.

abyss
June 24th, 2004, 03:37 AM
the size of the heads..i think the real problem isnt the size but the perspective :/
..or do the whole body sketch very weekly and then work on it, adding layers and details.one thing i realised just the other day, and finally with all the glory there is to it, is-
keep it as simple as possible
:) see ya.

I dig your style dude! Sweet stuff! I think a mix of ref and no ref is a good thing. Its better to have a few bad habbits (that look good :rendered: ) than having to depend on ref for the most part. Too much ref without doing stuff from the mind kills imagination and skill in the long run. keep rocking - looks cool man.
