My absolute favorite is the one in the top right corner, of the people marching in line. It captured the mood of that scene well. The yak is coming off as a little flat to me, though. (more contrast?) Great things, love the brush strokes. :)

these figure sketch pages are extremely cool. keep working.
colour drawings from the movie are neattoo, but try to avoid contours. work with shapes from the beginning, as if it was real paint.

I'm also slightly stunned by the volume of the posemaniac sketches. I really need to practice more.....

Hi torstan thx. Yes I'm stunned too by the amount of those studies considering that I don't see improvement lol. No it's not true lol. Now I'm much more relaxed while doing those 30 secs craps while before it was getting on my nerves and I wanted to crash the pc out of the window :P

Evergrey

The pictures from pirates show great likeness, and i think painting from a movie like that is good since you both get to do portraits and environments. The posemaniac stuff is cool, i think you should try to get out and draw real people the posemaniac-way (as in "real fast sketches") to get some variety. Well yeah, overall try to vary your work a little more.
Keep it up!

Wow, what diligence. Great studies.
I like your rough style of painting. I think the pieces that work best are the ones that combine some smooth areas to contrast the rough brush strokes (the ice pics from pirates of the Caribbean). One suggestion I would have is to not go so black in shadows. Often shadows have specific colors - like more blueish, or on skin redish, it shouldn't just go towards black, since that kinda creates a muddy look. Thats especially true for example for the Squid-Captain, where a lot of sub surface scattering is going on.

Great stuff. Looking forward to see more :)

Hendrix Coyote
September 21st, 2008, 03:32 PM
Hey Thomas thx! Your advice is great and surely it's something to never forget I see that... About my references I took a bunch of shots from the Pirates of Caribbeans at World's End and I'm working from there. So I'm trying to paint what I see and I feel that I'm learning a lot and the shots offers really many different subjects and light situations. I like it. But I think from now on I'll try to paint also from another film, and switch often between the two. I chose Star Wars Episode III and I'll paint from that one too. I love face expressions. Like this one (a lot of black in this LOL, but I :lifedrawing: this as you see without modifing the contrast, good exercise for my eyes I think).

After 8 months, here you go with a couple of 30 secs posemaniacs, I stopped doing them exactly when I posted my last one here, and it's a shame. It's a really good exercise for the hand and the brain.

When I'll be back home I'll post a painted sketch I did yesterday.

I'm looking forward to see me more involved in all of this without stopping anymore.

And thanks, Nellin.

awesome stuff, see you been busy the last days :D
i wish i did as much as you did
great stuff...the brushwork is kinda messy for my taste, what about flattening it a bit?...
great stuff though...cant wait to see more :D

Hendrix Coyote
August 4th, 2009, 05:23 PM
hi Catatafish thanks for the advice...I have like a couple of hours in the evenings before going to bed, so I'm doing one each day trying to copy those masters' strokes but without refining the work too much... I'm calling them done when I'm tired or I think I've done enough on them and just really want to move on, well I think I have just to keep doing those studies...a lot of studies if I want to improve a little bit

the following is another quick Sargent copy, all messed up

Hendrix Coyote
August 9th, 2009, 07:26 AM
Another sargent study

Hendrix Coyote
August 10th, 2009, 05:39 PM
another Sargent copy; I can't nail his perfect anatomy and features. Must study more. Must draw more.

Good night.

Konstruktion
August 11th, 2009, 08:47 AM
Well it must be hard to copy the genius of Sargents' strokes, but you seem to be studying a lot, which obviously is a good thing. I like the last update, especially her eyes. Them together with the colors reminds me of Sargent hehe, apart from it being a Sargent study so yeah that is as well a good thing

Hendrix Coyote
August 12th, 2009, 05:43 PM
lol mate nice
thanks

I feel like I'm learning a lot by doing all these studies; in particular light and colors; I can't nail well all the shapes and facial features, in particular in fast studies like this; I know that I really need to draw more and train my eye/mind more. All considered, this is just copying someone else's work: all the work was already done by them, so characters and stuffs should be copied with some grade of precision, that's the exercise...I'm failing but I feel I'm learning something and that feels good :D

The next another Sargent study. Hey that's my town! Nice, I think I know that place even...
Really quick, I call it done and tomorrow is another day :D

Hey Eve Radio helps a lot lol!

Goog
August 12th, 2009, 07:28 PM
Great studies! they have a certain quality about them which really make them pop. Only crit is that your colors seem to get muddy at times. There is usually a more saturated color used as a mid-tone when in transition between darks and lights. In this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/freeparking/522125082/) image for example, there is an ever so subtle shift to a more saturated reddish color when the transition from dark to light is made on the cheek. In your study this area appears muddy because it seems that to achieve the mid-tone in this area of the painting you simply mixed the light with the dark.

Hendrix Coyote
August 13th, 2009, 07:21 PM
Goog, thx mate for taking the time to write here!
I understand what you say...you are perfectly right
that's what I try to always keep in mind but sometimes I take shortcuts, and that's bad I know. Somebody else here, I believe, pointed me to that same issue so I see that I really have to move my ass and work on that :D
Thanks a lot for your help.

Next another study from Sargent. quick. Before going to bed. I really hope to be able to paint a lot during the next weekend. And in relax.
Goodnight

Ciao Shard thanks...
I keep on drawing and studying and doing sketches from photos, life (when I can) and posemaniacs.
I can see that I have many tons of work to do to reach the place where I want to go, but...well better if I draw and don't think to that, because otherwise I start whining about all the precious time I've lost in my life not following this road before- and that's completely unuseful and sucks

Sunday 6th of September, George Lucas will be here in my town and will give the "Leone D'Oro" (Golden Lion of the International Venice Movie Awards) to Lasseter, of Pixar.
The day after, 7th Sept., Lasseter and some other directors and artists from Pixar will keep a Master Class here...free for all students and professionals.:yum:

So, welcome to Venice George Lucas! Have a nice stay here :)
I'll go and see you on the red carpet and we will meet when I'll get a job at ILM. Do you hear me ILM? I said "when" not "if"!:wip:

So, I decided to going back to school lol
On the last days I studied for the admission exams at the Jedi Academy of Art, Painting course, here in Venice. 3 days of exams. Life drawing, questions...etc. It looks like I passed them. It will be official next week.
I really hope the next 3 years will be useful to me and not a waste of energies. (I have to work too). Well at least I'll do a lot of life drawing, anatomy and oil painting studies. It seems this school requires a lot of self-learning. Well, come on, Conceptart.org is the real Academy and is where the majority of things are learnt :yayca:

another study after Sargent I did today. I want to do a lot more of these before starting the "school" :D

wow, I love all of the study work that you have here! so many drawings! It's good, though, because that's the best way to improve.

Now, you get a lot of detail into your digital coloring, but what I'd like to see more of are crisp details! It would help to finish up the digital pieces. Keep up the good work :)!

Hendrix Coyote
September 12th, 2009, 02:57 PM
Thanks Mera for your precious comment... yeah..more crisp..means..I have to work more on detailing...zoom in more... you are right...I must do that

Still, for now, I'm having a good time (sometimes ..and hard time :P ) just trying to match all those colours and light and general shapes and features...
I want to do a lot of general studies after Sargent like these since I really need to understand him...detailing will follow :D

Back.

From now on, Ill do digital speed painting from imagination. No more copies from photos or masters, at least not regularly.

But I drew from life at the academy in the past months and I will be doing that forever I hope...will post something later on

First speed paint attempt is ugly. And all the following works will be ugly too. Until they will not be ugly anymore, I hope.
