Ok, I'm teaching myself to draw fancy vehicles but to be honest, every time I get to the wheels, I feel like a phucking baboon on dope; I cannot draw nice elipses for the sake of life.. I do have some templates but each one of them is in different angle AND different size, so I don't see much use of it.
So,
Does anyone of you fellaz know what equipment to use and (if I may ask) how)?
When I google for templates and stuff, I just get phucking online shops with crappy stuff.

Please, give me a hand here, guys.

Cheers,

Khan

If you see a round ruler with holes in it in an art shop buy it,
the ellipses in it are made for car designers to be able to make car wheels a lot quicker and it also helps with perspective and general placement once you have teh wheels in the right place.

Elipse guides.

Supposed to be used on a 4 point perspective grid but if you know the ish angle you need are still good. I have both a big and a small set and i'll sell you them for cheaper than on the interweb if you are interested because we were forced to buy some for my technical illustration course and i've not used them since the first year and i dont intend to use them again. :)

There are dozens of templates with ellipses in different sizes and degrees.

The idea is to do your sketch, then find a guide with an ellipse on it that fits. If none fits, you can just turn the wheels a bit i guess. Or start with the wheels.

I dont use those templates, so i don't know which ones you should get. But hope this helps. cheers!

Hey guys, thanks for help.
Kovah, where are you based?
janni: sounds kind of reasonable.. any useful tutorials on drawing wheels outthere?

Thanks,

Khan

Harald Belker's and Scott Robertson's tutorials on car/hovercraft/spaceship design.
I've just taken a look (for the XXXth time) at your sketchbook: you're tech stuff is just amazing, how is possible that you have problems with ellipses??

Hey Revenebo, thanks for compliments. But really, it's always a stryggle with the wheels.
I have Scott's DVD and it's not telling much about the wheels.. I guess, i need Harald's disc.

Any tipps and tutorials on these would be highly appreciated, folks!

Thanks,

Khan

I'm in the UK.

They are good for drawing elipses with as long as you know the angle you want them at. But might be worth looking up some tutorials but i dont know any off hand :s Will keep an eye out.

Try with Yoitisi mentoring about ellipses:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=117049

It's been a while since I watched Harald Belker's DVDs but, if I remember well, he explains placement of ellipses for cars wheels.

Anyway IMO ellipses templates are nearly useless, it's better to approximate the ellipse free hand and then draw it correctly with Photoshop if needed...

Hey sent you a pm :)

That price isn't fixed coz i need to check exactly which ones i have :)

They are useful if you are doing technical drawing, i've just lost interest in the drawing side and i like the 3D modelling side of it better.

Scott's first 2 DVD's are essentially all about ellipses.. the second is about drawing cars specfically, and again focuses ALOT on the importance of using templates with the right degree of ellipse, aligning minor axis w/ perspective, etc. If you were watching some of the later DVD's, I don't think it's as re-inforced (as they are meant to watch in order)
