Yo, check the last page for updates
Hey everybody!
Ha, I'm really new around here, so I figured the best way to get going would be to open a sketchbook :) There's a lot of really incredible art around here, Im hoping someday my work can compare, but till then... paint like crazy, right?
Ive been into computer graphics for a while(Ive been a 3d artist/animator for like 3 1/2 years), but just got into 2d graphics at the beginning of april. I started painting in photoshop with a mouse, and quickly realized that wasn't going to work, so I got myself an intuos, and Ive been painting frequently since then....
Heres some of my better/best work(from earliest to newest). Im open to/would appreciate any critiques or links to information or just advice. No need for a newbie cushion, be as brutal as you like, honesty suits me fine :D
Peace, thanks for looking!

Ha, thanks! Atmosphere is still kinda tough for me, these are my best. I have a tendency to stick with a very narrow color palette, which has a pretty negative effect on a lot of the little paints I do that go unfinished. These are the few times that it actually worked out :]
Yeah, its by far my best, sort of one of those accidental pieces that blows your other stuff out of the water and forces you to up the ante...
Thanks again :D

I think I did pretty good, but Id appreciate any comments/critiques to improve it. This is maybe the second head Ive actually finished... so yeah, plenty to learn Im sure :)

Wow, so I started this guy, and have been painting like crazy for the last few hours trying to get it right... Definitely stylized, I sketched him out, and then painted over it(with a bit of alterations to the design, gun etc)
Any and all critiques and thoughts would be much appreciated!

I like your 3rd enviros the best, nice mood and colors, interesting forms (at least for me)... the composition could be better (I dunno how, I'm too little, sorry). and I can see the sunshine on the hut in the 1rd one :) the trees in the background should be separated from it more, I think.
the colored guy with the gun... I like it, but there are some perspectivity (gun) and anatomy issues. I can't say much more, because I'm a beginner and it's a caricaturistic person, or how I put it... so his anatomy is different from ours, but he should be balanced. he's okay to look at, but I'm sure he can be better. I personally would alter at least one of his sides (the current state is too extreme or assymetrical for me) and the position of his nipples, but you can draw much better than me, I just tell my opinion, hoping it helps sometimes.
I have a strong feeling you should hone your perspectivity skills, it would make good to your enviroments too.
keep it up, I'd like to see more :)

Hey shiNIN, thanks for the comment! Great critiques, gives me plenty to think about, I really appreciate it. Perspective and anatomy are definitely among my weaker skills :)

I like your environment pictures. The second black&white is great. I think it really sets a mood. I like the long distance fading that thickens the image.

Wow, only just seen your posts. I was geniunly struck aback by the black, white and red painting. It has immediate potential reminds me of kill bill.
Perspective books would give a great push to your standard of work.
I think with environments making thumbnails on paper is crutial-it helps with the overall composition of the piece and gives you like a helping hand in like everything afterwards because you can then incorporate a building from one ands use the composition of another with the perspective of another.
Keep the work coming+espeically the black white+red ones they are like great already with a bit of work they could be like

Thanks so much dark eagle! Im pretty proud of that first one :)
Yeah, perspective is very hit and miss for me right now, I definitely need to work at that.
You know, Ive never tried thumbnails before(I only recently found out about em actually), I'll be using that on my next enviro for sure, thanks for the tip!

Am I missing something about thumbnails? There's not a special technique or anything, is there? Just a very small version of the image? Sounds stupid, haha.
Anyway, nice last paint. Gives a very good mood -- for some reason I'm thinking london...

Thumbnail: Basically you paint a really small version to map out perspective, composition, colors, etc. You do a few of these, and then pick the best(or the best parts of each) for your final painting.
And thanks! Prague actually(I really love the architectural style that place has). Heres another one(ref'd again):

Nice work so far. I just have to say that the proportions on some of your figures seem a tad off. It may just be a stylistic choice, but in either case, looking at some good anatomy books could help. Also, your perspective could use a little bit of work.
drewfarr
July 11th, 2008, 09:58 PM
Thanks! Good call on both accounts. Perspective is something I really need to get serious about practicing... Ha, anatomy too for that matter. There is a bit of a stylistic feel I'm going for, but I definitely need to start paying real attention to anatomy and proportion.

my absolute fav is the b&w one (last in the first post) it has an awesome mood! love the backlighting.
on the Prague painting, the arch on the left, closest to the viewer, is bothering me. i feel that, in perspective, it should be higher.
drewfarr
July 13th, 2008, 12:33 AM
I am pretty proud of that one, though the small buildings could use a lot of work in retrospect... ah well, you live, you learn.
You got me there, that image is riddled with perspective issues, and that's definitely the biggest. I'll do some more refs soon here, Im hoping they'll give me a steadier hand and better understanding of perspective.
Thanks for the crits, I appreciate it :)
Anyway, here's a little wip. I started it about an hour ago, but all my attempts at working out the contrast and shading have failed(Im dead tired for some reason), so I'll just get back at this tomorrow.

Fantastic start! Looks a bit weird that your darkest tone is light grey, but the colour choices are excellent, perspective seems pretty right on, and I love the general mood. Looks kind of retro. Looking forward to the darkening of the shadows and the lightening of the highlights ;)
ninjacat11
July 13th, 2008, 12:40 PM
That new WIP you're working on looks very promising. Looks like you've got perspective right. I think for the colors, you might want to show more highlights and dark areas to make it stand out.

I definatly am digging that last one on your first post, very ominous feel to it, nice design. The "mostly" black one with a little white (law enforcemnent) one is looking sweet too I could see that being the basis for a movie poster or something. Anyways only thing I can say is maybe try doing some sketches form life on your anatomy and perspective issues, Or if you find it difficult to have time for that like me- just grab a couple good anatomy books, reference can make a world of difference in finished paintings and a heck of a lot easier on your nerves. Cheers. :)

@Xoote: Thanks :)
@benditall: ha, exactly what I thought! When I say far as I can go I meant: I lost my steam as far as this one goes. I'm sure I could push it further, I just don't really have any interest in doing so, you know? As in, I don't feel like the outcome would be worth the trouble.
And I want to move on. And when I leave projects hanging, I tend to forget about them :)
Thanks again everybody!

nice sketching going on. If you want feedback you should work more on shading - mass drawing etc. I feel that you either use too much darks or too much light in your drawings. Don't look at me though (you saw my black milk concepts.. not that comparable universe)
I think you should work out a nice balance in your light and darks - do more studies ;)

Loving this last painting, good colors and good perspective. I know what you mean on loosing steam, for me taking something far in digital is always hard to do. I think sometimes its just best to call it quits and move on to something else...
drewfarr
July 15th, 2008, 10:42 PM
@blenditall: Right on man.
@eparts: Thanks for the advice!(I'm always down for some good feedback). Well, if anybody knows about darks and lights it's you, I'll definitely think more about that when painting :) Studies for sure.
@moroi: Thanks! Yeah, exactly. Ive tried sticking it out on stuff before, but while Im still in the learning stage(its not as if any of this is real project material), its best to just move on.
Argh, so I didnt do anything yesterday, let me apologize for that, ssg buddies. I sketched for a good half hour last night but it was nothing but suck, so I didnt post any of it :( Ill put up some sketches tonight If I can push em out.
But here's a paint I just finished up. I had a lot of fun, Im starting to feel more comfortable with colors, and getting out of straight monotone palletes. Probably slightly lacking in the contrast department on the skin.... Ah well, Im getting closer.
Thanks for looking!

Made me laugh! For some reason, maybe the spelling, I picture this guy with some sort of Jamaican accent or something. Haha, weird but good character, and well done technically as well. I wouldn't say the skin is low contrast, actually. Though it could be me, it looks fine. The only area that confuses me a bit is his left elbow.
Jabberwocky_Ai
July 15th, 2008, 11:06 PM
I love your environment pieces. The atmosphere, colour and overall execution are just beautiful. The piece with the arches seems a bit weird with the arch in the foreground. The perspective seems off which is a little disconcerting in a piece where the perspective otherwise is right on the money.
drewfarr
July 16th, 2008, 02:27 AM
@blenditall: Haha, well I finished the guy up and was like 'I kinda need to something to at least fake the semblance of a concept behind it.' And I was feelin' a little gansta, so there it is :) Yeah, if you cant tell, I repainted that elbow many times... I doubt this was the best take, but ah well.
@Jabberwocky_Ai: Thank you! Yeah, ever since I 'finished' that a week ago its been bugging me, I might actually go back and fix that up... I Basically need to bring the peak of the arch a (largeish)bit to the right and it'll be fine, but as it is it totally throws your eye. Thanks again, I appreciate the great feedback and kinds words :)

those enviro's of yours are looking pretty good, can't really say much in the way of a crit tho, my bg's aren't very good.
last one is pretty good, watch your mark making with your brushes tho. your figures are still pretty rough but as you know they will come with practice, man. while you're learnin tho, you should try finding some ref that fits closely with your pic, and remember to memorize as much as you can. i can see that your thinking about lighting and reflected light, which is always good to keep in mind. keep it up man, draw like there's no tomorrow.

Nice enthusiasm, that will help loads. Ive noticed a couple of things, firstly stay away from pure black and white, it really kills and image. Secondly, try to make your likes smoother, they are a bit scratchy at the mo, almost like your lifting the pencil way to much, you should be going for smooth long lines that give a nice gesture. Third, Hit the books for a good understanding of anatomy, this will help you push both the real life drawings and the cartoon style your embarking on. Fourth, Keep it up ;-)
drewfarr
July 21st, 2008, 11:12 PM
Thanks for the advice and encouragement, I really appreciate it :) These really thin lines are actually part of my practice regime to get myself to draw smoother strokes. When I use big thick brushes(this stuff is all digital), I tend to lift too much, this is forcing me to lift less to create a cleaner image :) So yeah, hopefully thing's will get better from here.
And as for anatomy studies, I just did a few, looking good I hope?(oops, just noticed her stomach/ribcage area look a bit iffy)

I know it's kind of old news, but I want to say that the train piece with the canal had a really great color world in the first wip but lost a lot of it in the second version. Having said that, they're not bad considering the time spent only with digital. I would recommend getting some art pencils though. Mechanical is nice for some things, but usually it's better to have a selection of harnesses with a point you can use on different angles.

I agree about the values in this latest piece. Also, you might want to upload a smaller image so people with small screens (...) can see the whole thing. Your digi painting skills are coming along.
Little robot isn't childish, its awesome! keep up the anatomy studies - I'd suggest trying to slam straight on views of anatomy before going into forshortening, It'll help the proportions stick in your head
Keep up the digital painting as well, try and combine the two and youse different drawing techniques with the figure.

Again, thank you!

lovin these little flesh creatures, good idea makes me want to try it out for myself. just at a glance i'd say to try and work some cooler hues in the shadows. and what if you started giving them some scars/scabs/bits of hair? also, just nabbed alchemy for myself and its so fun but so confusing!

Thanks! Cooler hues, check :) Yeah, I'm gonna up the creepy on the next few, taking it one notch at a time haha. And I totally know what you mean! It's a really strange app, but I guess its all about finding creative resource in the weirdness.
Anyway, before I get back to those creepy creatures, here's a cuter one...

Okay, back to those flesh tones, upping the ante in this one. I've taken the crits I've gotten from various forums, and hopefully it makes for a better result. There are a few small things anatomy-wise that need correcting, but I'm gonna lay this one to rest and keep them in mind for the next.

I love the blending job you did on the last creature. The tones are great, too.

Hi drew,
Neat little critters. I actually really dig the cute blue guy. Just keep working on your values more. The last two posts are better in that area and think about some studies from life as well. Keep it coming and keep drawing:)

@Ninja: Thanks man :)
@Trashy: Thanks! Values, yessir. Life studies like just painting things I see? Or Anatomy life studies? Thanks again :)
Here's my first face study in forever. As usual, I focused mostly on the colors(haha, I'm putting off anatomy again), and I'm finding myself happier with the results I'm getting. Values and forms-wise... questionable. For instance, I find the far cheek in my portraits tends to look very fat/puffy, but when I try to tone down the shading(and implied form), it doesn't feel like it looks right. Other than that...
Hopefully not too far off.

Your new face study's pretty good, but there are still a few little bits of trouble. For example, his nose seems a bit flat right now. You should have it stick out a little more.

Thanks man, yeah, it's seriously flawed... ah well, I'll get it eventually.
I'm going back to pencil studies because I obviously have a lot of things to learn... here are some hand studies(you can tell when I started getting into my groove, some of these are terrible).

Best advice I was ever given, and it's the easiest advice to take cus you can start using it literally the second you finish reading this post:
Control your lines. You've got lots of overlapped lines, fragmented lines, and essentially a bunch of little dashes that imply one larger, more solid line. Instead, learn to draw the entire line with 1 stroke. Think about it in your mind, understand mentally how it connects, twists, moves, the weigh the lineweight changes (if it does), and the quality of the line. Know why it is necessary to the piece as a whole, why it's critical to be drawn, and once you see it accurately in your head, lay it down as one, fluid line. If it isn't as good as you expected, it's an easy fix to erase 1 line and draw it again than it is to erase many little ones :)
Keep drawing, man. Keep drawing! :)

Some line control would definitely make your images much easier to read.

draw those hands bigger! i see you got space on your sb, use it! :D
but i think drawing them bigger will help you not make the "hairy" lines, make bigger strokes and try using your shoulder instead of your wrist.

lovely critters! when I will make digital studies, I will remember this method... study, imagination (that's my weak point, some simple lovely critters will be a good practice), fun... it sounds like a great combo for me :) thanks :)

Once again, nice stuff.... it's been way too long! Sorry, last bit of summer's been insane. I'm taking art this semester though, so I'll get some time every day whether I like it or not.
Question: what is the Alchemy app? I can't find it through google...

blenditall: oh, it's a popular thing, I heared about it here too... http://al.chemy.org/ if you subscribe to the mailing list, you got the download link... but it's not hard at all to figure out what it is ;)

Hey everybody, I appreciate the great tips and kind words :) Music has kept me totally swamped for the past month or so, but I finally had some time and an idea. Did a little sketch and had some fun with it.
Thanks for looking :)

Thanks man, I appreciate it :) Heres another one I came up with today... less polished, but Im starting to figure out skin, albeit not on a photorealistic level. Im trying out strong colors and neons, as compared to the more traditional colors and techniques you'd expect. So yes, the overblown tones you'll see in the coming pieces is purposeful.
Thanks for checking my sketchbook out :)

It may be intentional, but in the last picture, why is the person's mouth crooked like that?
