View Full Version : Painterly Figures

Hey,
Does anyone here know who does great painterly expressive figures? [ lots of use of color in skin tone, a variety of brushstrokes, etc? ]
As of now I have a couple of other artists in mind that I can use for reference for my next painting
- Jenny Saville
- Odd Nerdrum

Also, who does really good skies? Jeff Soto's skies I do admire due to the fact that he has a lot of color interpretation and various things going on in his paintings.

Yup yup
All Help is most appreciated :)

Thanks!

The oil painting demo by William Whitaker have a lot of tips on painting and using color in general http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=83405

One thing that really clicks for me is the tip that you should push your brush handling skill to the very edge to make it look expressive and spontaneous.

I think there's an old thread around here somewhere with a lot of his stuff that's not featured on his site anymore since this is where I found out about him in the first place. Provided the links still exist.

Hey Michelle! Good to see you back - has your baby arrived yet!

Back on topic, painterly doesn't have to mean wristy brushwork, I think of it as artwork that has closer proximity to the means by which it is made, by which I mean the paint 'is' the alluding to form and light by the presense of paint as paint.

Man theres a lot of good stuff in this thread I need to check out more of.

Here are two things I think I found on the conceptart forums, but dont know who did them. If anyone does, please tell me so I can label them correctly.

The first seems like a Nicolai Fechin study, except I've never seen a Fechin painting that is exactly like that, this seems more like a combination of several Fechin paintings. I'd like to see the original work of the one who did the study though.
