So i've been working towards a career in the graphics arts for some time now, and concept work has become my foremost interest (i'm a student). But i have this question, and i don't know where else to ask:
How well do concept artists do, really? On average (not the superstars, per se, but a respected and talented artist with steady work) how much does a concept artist rake in a year? I realize this is an odd question, but i want to know what i'm in for and get a sampling of how people are doing out there.
Thanks.

I actually just graduated last december and have been trying to scrounge whatever freelance gigs I can get as I wait to hear from a few studios about work.
Right now, I'm not making enough to really make ends meat by doing concept work alone (hell . . . most of my clients still owe me!) . . . I'm also working on drawings to sell at arts festivals and trying to get into galleries, and I still need a bit of help from the parents to pay bills . . . college is a hell of a bill. So right now I'm sort of like an Impressionist minus the boozing . . . recognition . . . and talent!
Also find your niche as soon as possible . . . it will help out in the long run.
Again I'm new to the game but things should pick up . . . it's just a matter of staying optomistic and on your toes!

More than most teachers, less than most executive type people. It's all location, experienced, and skill based. Don't expect anyone to tell you- if you are in studio, it's enough to make ends meet comfortably. Don't worry about the money. Attitude is everything, and if you are only motivated by money than you won't go anywhere in the field.
