Hey,
I thought it might make kind of sense to start a thread where accepted Entertainment Design Students at Art Center College can introduce themselves , meet other future students and discuss ... dont know... stuff.

Well, I'm Matt and I'm 22 years old. Currently I live in germany and got accepted to accd today.

Thank you for your attention. Next please.

Justin.

You mean like the Art center thread?

Nope, not quite. I mean. Entertainment Design Fall 2008 Term only. Just to get to know the people we will be studying with. A smaller circle ;).
I've seen your Portfolio btw. I like your life paintings.

thanks.

But there is an art center thread, and this is one of the things that it's for.

I think most people dont necessarily want to be bothered with future ED students personal issues. Always considered the art center thread to be more general...

Erm Okay I don't see why this has to be a bad thing, sure there's in Art Centre thread but if he wishes to make one for a specialized aspect of the University I say let him. I for one would like to know from first hand experienced people who have gone in before me how that major matches up and If it's worth it. And don't say you can do that in the other thread because trying to sift through all the other questions and replies is a drag. If I have a question or concerns about the specific major than I can come hear and raise my questions and have them quickly responded to.

Go on man!! Thanks for the thread!!

i know they only take applies at fall once a year but when i went to the ed speech thing scott host few months ago he said like 18 spaces fall n 20 at spring @ @???
it's kinda weird tho, i saw some porfolio from people that i dont know and a few from my friends, if there's only 18 spaces i assume like every one would be super talented, but actually even tho most of them are pretty good, i know many of them are not that impressive at all @ @, range of skills is pretty big ... so it's kinda hard to know if it's really that hard to get in or not sometimes @ @, when i saw few pp 's blog that is really good i would wonder if that's even possible for me to get in even tho i am applying for illustration first n ed at next fall, but when i look at some of the others work, they are not even that good. I understand that a lot of pp said they look for the design n concept more over to the skills, but without the illustration+ id skills, it's really hard to bring out the ideas..

Uhm ok let's set the record straight to some extent. The original plan was always to have few spots for ED. But Scott has had to eat his own words because there's more demand. Quite frankly, I think that this thread examplifies what is plaguing the school: cliquish behavior. I for one am illustration design and 6th term and have been very worried by the lack of communication/'contamination' between majors and it really does sadden me when I see this sort of thing perpetuating itself over and over.

As for the level of the ED students, I know only a handful that are truly skilled. I've seen people who entered into that track whom I have no respect for them in terms of skill base. Even some of the graduates have showed a level that is pretty abysmal (without exaggeration). That alone, made me question why I would want to get into a track like ED.

Keep your head open guys, there is a whole lot more than just entertainment.

So what are you saying ED sucks now?

evildisco
September 8th, 2008, 03:29 PM
No what I am saying is that ED is not the be-all-end-all major. It does not hurt to keep your head open to different things because there is a definite over-saturation of people who want to do what you want to do and the only way to compete is to be as broad as possible.

Also Scott Robertson is known to exaggerate a lot about his track, so take it with a grain of salt. That's all I'm saying.

I just want to be helpful, I love Art Center and it pains me to see quality go down.

In layman's term it's not of the standard that should be represented by the school. I totally understand why you want to keep AC from falling standards and i do hope that doesnt happen. Hopefully when I apply ill be much of an asset to the school as it will be for me!!

True, i heard pp taking abt the last grad show of ed suck , most of the good stuff are from the alumni @ @ ( gradshow put up alumni stuff???)
It's just that I don't want to take ent art or fine art, neither doing editorial stuff, then the only options left is illustration design or ed
ED career direction just feel more clear to me and movie/game industry feels fun.
btw for the scholarships do you need to reapply once a year, or as long as u keep up ur gpa over 3.0 and sent stuff in to show progress they will continue giving you scholarship?
cause last time i went to the scholarships exhibition
the stuff on the wall is from higher term student, but the portfolio that they put on tables are mostly from student that complete 2nd term, they don't show entry level scholarships winner or the 2nd term pp are the entry level winner ???
@ @ i 'm confuse

The ones in the major that are badass are the ones that have had more mileage, it's all it comes down to. Justin did a 11 month internship at Spacetime studios, Danny and Rob have been through the most rigorous Art Center at Night class and have know about the Ent Des major for three years.

I do agree that some of the grad show stuff is at a lower level than expected, but the way you improve the fastest is spend all the time you can working on art. A good portion of the grads have also been in other majors for several terms before switching to Entertainment.

Work super hard. Do homework first, then homework extra (just completing the homework only gets you a B-) then personal projects/ scholarship review stuff.

Also the new major is Industrial Design heavy, so often figures might suck in comparison, but it comes down to the individual to do the extra work. There are free figure drawing and painting workshops pretty much every night of the week.

As I said it's all about mileage and personal commitment. People here eat, shit, drink, breathe art center. Make friends like that and just work in groups and get your shit done, no excuses and you're pretty much guaranteed to succeed.

Entertainment Majors have an almost 100% job placement upon graduation, and the really badass ones get their dream jobs before they even graduate. you're also told not to accept anything that pays under 60K. That should give you confidence that you'll be able to repay your loans and that it's totally worth selling your soul for :D

I chose art center to get my ass kicked hard in terms of workload, I'm getting it, and I'm loving it.

As for the comment on "Cliqueing", you will naturally hang out with the people you spend the most time with in class with, or that are of similar denominations. Don't be a pussy, socialize and approach people you don't know. Everyone is really friendly and open minded. Take advantage of it!

cheers

aww... i 'm the opposite .. i'm good at figure but suck at i.d.skills = . =
main reason I didnt apply this year also.
New student and higher term student from the I.d. track and illustration track take different classes at the first 2 terms , right? What classes you taking now?

I'd say the 100% job placement is a gross approximation. There aren't simply enough jobs to go around. I do agree though if your portfolio is up to par chances of landing a good job before getting out is high.
