Great sketchbook man, your designs and concepts are top notch stuff. It´s rare seeing a artist to be good in more than one style and to understand different subjects like characters, vehicles ,environment etc.! :chug:
ericdee
October 25th, 2003, 04:10 PM
Thanx Roberto, good to hear that!:chug:
When I start to develop a complicated illustrations with several interactive characters, I first make a rough sketch in a smaller size, about 10 to 15 cm. The problem is, I cant´t stop sketching, and then I develop this bullshit small sketch till I´m not able to understand whats going on there. Here is one of that "overforced" sketches:
http://www.ericdesideriu.com/Pics/sketchl.jpg
And some other more developed/clean sketches.

Excellent work! Your skill with the human form is fantastic. I aspire to such a level. :D
one crit, the other animation style pictures don't seem as strong structure wise. I would suggest to draw through the object and put more lines across the face where the eyes go, nose and mouth goes etc.
Hope you post more!

Actually, I work with the lines in my working process, but when I sketch in the book, I try often to sketch more directly, without constructing too much. Not with too much success, as you can see :) !
Here some rough storyboards frames, I´ve done for a friends short movie.

Great stuff here. Just one small thing I noticed though. The tires on your motorcycles seem really flat, like perfect cylinders. My bike and all my friend's bikes have more doughnut shaped tires... dunno if that describes it correctly.
Um if you laid the tire down flat on it's side it looks a lot more like this

as far as drawing, you really need to work on faces more.

November 15th, 2003, 11:48 PM
wowX300.... breathtaking stuff.. only crit i have is that you should really take the time to study and practice facial expressions, and faces in general.. they hardly ever seem to sit right within a cranium.. it works in the more cartoony style you have, but when you go for more realistic faces, its not nearly as strong..

Animals, yepp, I made some animal live sketches in the zoo, i will search for them tp post them. But animals I draw not so often, unfortunately. I have to change that, as soon as possible.
@Landmate,
actually I´m working on the faces, but you´re right, I have to do it much more often, with more concentration. Good point!
@MainLoop
I will post soon also some more realistic stuff, from my work.
@Spok,

ERic!
Wowsers---those battle scenes are BRUTAL... What type of technique are you using to produce these? is it some kind of colored pencil, or another medium? I did see the Pelikan paper in your procedural pictures, but I guess I'm not sure how it works? is (for instance) the sexy cowgirl done with this process? do you work these up from pencil sketches, or is the blue tool what you sketch with?
Sorry for all of the procedural questions; the technique is exceptional. I especially like the page where the blue-pencil stuff overlaps with the brown ink. That sketchbook page is priceless.
Please tell me you are doing this professionally... This stuff is killer! and do post more MoRe MORE
regards,
the gugg.
ericdee
September 25th, 2004, 07:55 AM
Hello guggenmaneuver,
the blue sketches you have seen are done with a blue pencil, from animation, a "Sanford col-erase 20044 Blue", in fact nothing special:).I use this pencil mostly for the work.The Pelikan paper is just usefull for paintings, to transfer the drawing on the painting board(of course, also by overdrawing). Sometimes I use also another colour, to see some difference in detail, or to get some new ideas, like the brown sketch.
Thanx a lot dude, I hope I could help you a little bit. I will post very soon more(hope I still have some freespace on my server:))

stunning, i havent seen figurative linework as good as this since marko's last update ;)
as jon said before, its amazing how you are able manage very complex scenes with apparent ease. every line fits and all the proportions work, even though they might not always be perfect in anatomy or realism. excellent job on gesture, design and perspective. adorable.

Hi Eric,
Really cool comicbook style there! Reminds me of early Marshall Rogers maybe mixed with some Rick Leonardi, with a dash of J Scott Campbell line finesse. That's a compliment! :)
I like your storytelling a lot. Great use of camera angles and sense of movement. Your style is really shaping up nicely, very unique and detailed. I hope you will keep posting, it's great to see other comic styles around here.
Great work, man!~~~JadeDragon (Nice painting technique too!)

Hello guys,
I´m really sorry for not responding at once, I was busy doing almost 80 storyboard frames during the past three days. Unfortunately I was juts able to check quick the thread, but I wanted to respond with patience and also posting some new sketches. I try to answer to all of ya:
@Hanuka
Thank you very much, for your kind words. I really love to do complex scene, full of details. Sometimes I lost myself in details, a crazy tick of mine. My commercial work is background work, storyboards, layouts, concepts, stuff like that. Unfortunately, Germany has a lack of conceptwork in the entertainment industrie, thats the reason why my work is mainly concentrated in advertising. As I said, unfortunately, my love belongs to conceptart and comics:).
@Squal
Shit, don´t hate me man, I promise to sketch also with normal pencils;):)Thanx dude;)!
@sone_one
Thanx for the stars, I wil post more often, I´ll promise.
@JackalAnubis
Oh, sorry for the "X", sometimes the server goes down, pretty weird "freenet" servers!
@JadeDragon
Thank you very much for the compliment dude, its a honor for me to hear that. I just ckecked your sketch and I was impressed, but this I will write it there;). Its obviously that I love comics:)!
Thanx again to all for your kind words, here some working sketches for some in fact two illustrations, not finished yet, still scratching the ideas. The "amazon"g(a)uy with the sword in the hand was not my idea, it is a 70´s ScifiHero, wanted by the producers. Jesus, he´s style is a little bit.... :[ ;)

It is over a year since I made my last post in this thread, I dont even know if it is allowed to revitalize this sketchbook, but I try. After seven months of working at a movie project, almost without free spare time, I would like to post here more often, so kill me if I shouldn´t.
@Oddity, dont knoe exactly how much time I need, sometimes an hour, sometimes a couple hours, depend of the theme and the job, if there is a quick deadline or you can handle the concept over a couple days:)

I want to vote for five stars. I like them characters of yours really much!!! Linework is working, poses are interesting and beautiful and their expressions lively. I likes. This is what I would like to learn also.

wooo, great lines. You've got some really dynamic looking poses in here. I'd like to see you go a bit freer with your painting though. Try to do some without overlaying lines...the one of the helicopter was really nice.

November 28th, 2005, 04:48 PM
@Theo, treeeees??:) well then, good luck let us see some tree sketches:)
@Recursive, thanx:), the render depends often of the job, but indeed I like it as easier as possible.
@Hiipi, thanx:), also for the stars.
@Hi Mull, whatyamean with "freer with the painting"?Sorry, got it, yepp, thats the next step I try to go further, but it takes me a little bit time(and courage to post). This small storyboards you have seen(with the helicopter) are the direction I like to try more often, have to take the time to exercise more for that.Thanx:)
@Yina, I just remark, that the ölast time I worked for an RPg with strong b/w lines is about 9 month ago, I really miss that style. Hope to come back soon.
What I really like working as a conceptartist/illustrators is the varierty of styles you have to apply to some projects, today is it more SciFi, tomorrow more "reality", soon more cartoony an so on.... It is never borring. Thoug, I envy comicbookartists developing on single style to perfection, for example Creg Capullo, Travis Charest, Benoit Springer, Mathieu Lauffray. Just awesome dudes. Claire Wendling, also to mention one of the best ever strongest drawers on earth, a fantastic woman:)
Return to sketches, on of them you see finished above:

Hey there. You certainly did not get your stars for nothing. Great work here. I think I've seen your art somewhere before (on some site related to gnomon or something). Only crit here is that these posts are huge. Took a century to appear on my screen. Going to have to study your style quite carefully.

ericdee
March 8th, 2007, 10:16 AM
Hello guys, thanx a lot for your kind words. I am drawing since I was a kid, of course, but I think about 90% of the forum members here have the same past;) Of course you need sometimes references, its part of the job. If you start to design a character, after the brief, you first check some inspirations, some references, to start to create an idea out of common, or at least, you try it:) Thats a normal process at the beginning. But you dont need that for simple scribbles or sketching in your free spare time.
Here some more linework,

Coming back with a WIP for an illustration, still not finished, hope to finish it at the weekend. You can see th single steps, from the scratch and playing around with the background. I extended the background before I combine and integrate the character in the background and coulors.

Geez man TONS of awesome work in here. Do you use a lot of refrence for your costume designs or just kinda pull it all from your massive imagination? Love the detail you put into that stuff.
Great work man. :P

Hi guys, thanx a lot for your kind words.
"TheKastOne", yeahh, sometimes I got also the feeling that I need to draw more:) Unfortunatley the day has just 24 hours, damn:)
"Recluse", for sure, sometimes you need to use reference for costumes, especially when they are historical ones. I studied fashion and grafical design, so I already had a small library of costumes in head, and you simply combine a lot of ideas. But in case you need to work more realistical, then you need to have a closer look at reference material.

Hey guys, happy new year for 2008. Finally, slowly I got the chance to show some of the work from 2005, 2006 and 2007. Starting with some storyboards I did for Crysis, about one year ago. I put them on the sketchbook, cause they are done in a pretty sketchy style, so they fit much better here, then in the finally finished section of the forum.
Cheers, Eric

Your Crysis storyboard looks really good.
I've played the game but I didn't like it very much because of the bad ending. As I bought the game I thought it is a complete game with an ending and not part 1 of a trilogy. I haven't heard this before just read about it in an interview which came out after the release of the game.
I was so curious to see the ending and now I feel 'left hanging'. It is somekind like going to an action movie and just when things are start rolling the curtain clothes and you have to figure out there will be another part of the movie without having heard of this before.
Bad gaming experience but great artwork ;)
Best,
Chris

Hey Chris, how´going? I cant say too much about the game itself, personal I liked it but I also known from the beginning, that it is just the first part of a trilogy:)
Here more of those storyboards,
cheers,
Eric
