I wanted to approach the ecosystem in a more journalistic or nature guide fashion. The notes that go with each creature helped me come up with the creatures as I painted and drew them. I will be adding more here as I get them finished. ENJOY!!

My story involves the same location on Earth at two different points in time (some 65 million years apart). These creatures are a sampling of the low level vermin type creatures infesting the city of the civilization that existed 65 million years before present.

I would have loved to spend more time on this, and submit a few more designs, but unfortunately i've been both lazy and unmotivated, as well as busy with work :p ! Maybe next time though, as this exercise has taught me alot (both technically, and time management wise)!

Each creature's background was developed along the way along with some research...but looking at everyone's entries, I missed out on designing my 5th creature which was the microscopic organisms that the Coral Isopod picks up in the seagrass...a more sluggish/crustacean alien creature, along the lines that other entrants have conceived...the other people's posts are fantastic! I recently started a new job...so I was limited in time in pumping out more thumbnails, so I could only get four up. This was a fantastic activity and really got me back on track. well done everyone!

After finding two pages from the presumed lost logbook of Tom Inglesson, a research team under leadership of Sir Jonathan Kingsly went down into the deep in the centre of the Tobacan sea to explore and find out what was true about the forgotten tale of the Tenterticuan.

I first watched the BBC documentary to get an idea of how deep sea creatures look like but then created a not so deep ecosystem. I imagined that part of the Utopia was made up of farms where water plants were grown as food and oxygen supply. You can see the results of the documentary and a rough image of the farm in the sketches. I then started thinking about what creatures could live near these farms, trying to keep them believable and coherent.

Background info on the underwater world:
This world is on a planet in a galaxy unknown to men at this point in time. Basically it is a society similar to Canada, in the sense that it is a land for immigrants. It has been built only 300 years ago. Species from around the universe come here, and pay obnoxious amounts of money to stay in this underwater Utopia. It has been built and ran by some of the richest and most talented individuals from around the universe. The underwater world is filled with a certain mixture of air that most species from around the universe agree with. There are certain cities however, that are filled with different types of water, for immigrants that don't use air, but still want to experience life in the encased underwater cities.
War is never a problem, poverty or hunger is never a problem, the government is never a problem, in fact, there really are no real problems here.
The creatures here are mostly harmless, aside for the Elephant whale of course.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3167/cowpage1ln4.jpg
The Elephant Whale is the most dangerous creature found in this underwater world, and also one of the rarest. Besides being almost impossible to kill while it is underwater, it is also the most delicious meat found on this planet. Not many will ever get to try it, seeing as how rare it is to see the elephant whale, let alone kill it somehow. Many hunters dedicate their whole lives to trying to hunt down one of these creatures, and those few that succeeded were able to make a great living for the rest of their lives when they sold the body of the dead elephant whale.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/8171/scan0003rz4.jpg
This sea horse is a very popular way of transport when moving around outside of the underwater city. The horses can't deal with air, so the passengers must put of their diving gear, and dive down into the aquariums built for these creatures and strap themselves onto the horses underwater. The aquarium has doors that open to let the horses and their passengers both in and out. The horses can be controlled by a wheel, as their nervous system responds to it's movements.

Concepts:
1. Ablablara - Every civilization needs light to develop itself. This tiny fish was a blessing for the first settlers, who arrived to build Undersea Utopia. Nowadays they keep Ablablaras in the special water-glasses, to light up the darkness of a deep water. Stomach of full fish is producing special extremely illuminating substance.
2. Batooro - this word means "eye". This small animals are bred on a plenty of undersea farms, because of theirs eye shaped excrescence. Like the snails who have got their shells, Batooros have got their "eye". Of course it is only an imitation and it is a delicacy of Utopia's inhabitants
3. Aroru - Every city have got its communication and transport. Tamed Arorus are perfect for this kinds of jobs. It can take all families on trips but also it is able to move all houses!
4. Gagoo - Very cute and sweet creature. This animal is favourite pet in the whole Utopia. It loves to play games with children. Gago swims using mainly it's huge ears.
5. Kerheto - Incredibly hard-working animal. It helped first settlers to dig tunnels in undersea mountains. Nowadays it's main task is finding resources under the ground.

I wanted to go ahead and provide a little something and the names kinda speak for themselves. All my prototypes are predators. Number 3 & 4 can come out of the water for short periods of times. #2's tenticles can come out of the water with the head exposed to the air but still must retreat back into the water before the skin surface and tenticles dry up. #3 comes out of the water similar to that of a flying fish.

The Island Giant
These slow moving giants follow the warmer climates around the globe. They live for hundreds of years and can measure in kilometres. The shells of these creatures have layered slates which happen to be perfect foundations to build on for our DEEP inhabitants. Large Guard fish are always near and feed from the giants belly. In turn, they protect the beast and its tenants.

The Upside Down Jellyfish.
Animal domesticated by the CHOW (Central Homo-Oceanic Workers) Republic as an ATV (anemonal transit vehicle). The bouncing motion jelly is great at shock absorption. Natural bioluminescence is used as head lights and back light for the control panel. The animals are a favorite mode of transportation when tackling rocky terrain.

A section of the utopia when it was first built was a zoo which housed as many animals as the survivors could gather when they evacuated into the underwater shelters. Unfortunately the only building breach to ever occur was in this zoo area; water flooded it and hundreds of animals perished, leaving bloated carcasses floating across the depths until only bones and skeletons remained. Some opportunistic sea creatures used the elephant skeleton as a shell to live in, almost like a hermit crab. A couple dozen sea animals now inhabit the interior of the elephant bones, using them as an exoskeleton for protection against larger predators.

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa215/hafdedplatoonleader/PestiferousQueenEntry.jpg
Species: Pestiferous (poisonous) Queen
While observing this creature, I was doing more than risking my life! The Pestiferous Queen never hesitate to kill anything in sight. They usually travel in groups of ten or more. Very selective eaters, so they constantly seek their prey. After observing a few Pestiferous Queen shredding one another, I realized and concluded that they shred apart the male (pestiferous king) immediately after mating. The males can hardly defend themselves due to exhaustion. Some have managed to get away but very few. The Pestiferous Queen usually measure up to 7 feet in height and weigh about 200 pounds, however I observed one three times this size assuming that it was a male Pestiferous. From it's secondary mouth located at the bottom of it's body, the Pestiferous releases a pink gas-like poison as a warning to creatures near or approaching their territory. Their double-limbed arms are a great advantage for swifting through the deep waters, reaching speeds at about 50 mph. Every pointed feature on the Pestiferous is poisonous and fatal. They dwell in only the darkest regions of the deep sea, resting themselves in a thick swampy-like algae mud. The three bright blue eyes on the Pestiferous work wonders for these creatures in darkness, as the four smaller ones function as they seek food in the higher and brighter areas of the sea.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa215/hafdedplatoonleader/Aqua-BatEntry.jpg
Species : Aqua-Eptesicus Fuscus ( big brown water bat)
Continuing my expedition, I approached an area so dark I couldn't see a thing even with my high-tech equipment. Fortunately and suddenly, a florescent glow came out of this ice cave. Only based on my theory, fluctuating in temperatures, the ice in these caves gets so cold that it releases gas which illuminates the ice. Dwelling in these caves was the Aqua-Eptesicus Fuscus. Enormous in size, measuring up to 15 feet long and weighing approximately 400 pounds, this water bat is very aggressive and intimidating. These creatures can have several babies at one time, I lost count after fifty. The bad thing about this is that the babies tend to drift away from their mother and get eaten by creatures lurking near by. As babies, their nearly black and become very colorful as young adults. Another problem the aqua-bat runs into is other sea creatures are attracted to the light that the ice puts out, but not a single creature that encounters the aqua-bat will physically try to compete, they simply swim away. The aqua-bat choses not to hunt for food, they rather settle for a strange looking fruit gathered from water trees. A massive pile of this fruit is kept in their caves, being that they'd rather not leave home often. Dissection studies found that these creatures are descendants of the Eptesicus Fuscus (big brown bat). Not many disadvantages for the water-bat if there are any. Feeling a bit uneasy, one of the water-bats wrapped it's tentacles around my vehicle, I'm lucky to be alive!
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa215/hafdedplatoonleader/Bone-CarapaceEntry.jpg
Species: Bone-Carapace
These creatures are nothing more than your average pest such as a tick, flea, gnat or cockroach. They stink, annoy and pollute the sea. Many creatures mistake the Bone-Carapace as tasty critters, but immediately spit them out of their mouths when trying to eat them. It's not just that they taste bad, it's their bone shell. The Bone-Carapace is probably the most well-protected creature known. Results from a study showed that it took nearly two tons to slightly crack it's armor (shell), very amazing. These creatures roam anywhere and everywhere, also feeding on anything from sea maggots to algae. They weigh about twenty pounds and measure about 2 feet in diameter. It was amazing to see these creatures swim, they swim in a circular-like motion, much like a rotating saw blade....
This expedition was fun, but far from over. I have many creatures and secrets to reveal, so stay tuned....until next time..........

I voted Saturns Gate. Great details and even greater creatures all looking as if they could actually exist. I like the effect that there is a screen around it looking like a database that would be used in an advance undersea utopia. Also the lighting adds a feel of how deep the creature would live in the water. All great creatures

Saturns Gate was really nicely laid out. The size comparisons were particularly a good idea and I wish I had done that myself. Lots of neat parallels to our above world(like the seagull-ish thing in the entertainment district).
In the end, I chose Delmar because I really liked his idea of fish as an energy source and how the different fish were used in a system of gathering nrg.

Well since my reply got eaten by the internet i'll have to do this agan ~.~
I like Delmar's because of the colours they're luminous and perfectly suited to what deep sea creatures would emit. The designs are simple but functional, streamlined but exciting. The colours are fresh and bright and amazing.

corspufo: I like your entries a lot, Leviathus Rex is my favorite. I lve the color scheme you wee shooting for. Great work
attorney: nice work, variety and designs
ibbo: I like your shapes and shading, imo a little more anatomy study would have helped out, maybe a full body view.
Adele: I love what you have put together. Everything looks professional. My personal fav. is the Bleached sea Penguins. great line work also
Tommoy: awesome work man, I think these are some of the best I've seen from you.
yoru no Megami: I see some cool designs in your pages. I'm liking "horned whale" and :blue trumpet" nice work, and some good writing
cheo36: I like your thumbnail designs and the color in your main piece
Delmar: Wow man, your final is awesome. I love the header. I wish I would have had time to get a nice layout like this. I tried to write but I suck at it. Great work over all, love your creatures. Azurey kicks major ass
Hyptosis: I like your line work. Iimo, i would like to see the contrast pushed between the creatures and the background. Looks a tad bit washed out. Great work in the composition . "Ocean Drake" is my fav.
EricElwell: I still love that green guy chasing the diver. I think your full color piece came out perfect
Pavel Sokov:Nice writing, I think your story would make a great movie.Elephant Whale is my personal fav.
Naomi: I think its awesome watching you progress, you seem to have a hunger for creating original works, and the motivation to learn. I think your entries are colorful and fun with a lot of thought put into em. Im liking that line drawing of the "water Mus-Hussu.
Roger Adams:For your 1st try at a cow I think its vary exceptional. I love the contrast between the mouth and head. The color of the mouth really draws my attention right to the face. Nice work
Digagyan:Vary nice line work and designs. Love the "Sealopus'
naroken: Love the sketchbook feel to your entries. nice work
Thalion: Awesome colors, and design. I like # 5 "Kerheto"
Vorace: This is one of the best "put togethers " I've seen. Fantastic header and layout. as for creature design ,I'm digging the Leviathan, that head look dangerous .
Lege1: good to see you fund some time, 3 eyed crunk fish is the bomb baby!
MCross: nice composition, That hairy sea worm is a long fellow
98 platinum:Awesome concepts. i love all the designs and you have some nice line work
Coldrum:I was hoping to see something from you, and you give us that awesome turtle. Nice reflection on that shell
Flashrabbit: Nice work is that water color?
Mischeviouslittleelf: Nice work all around, I like your carrier whale
Saturns Gate: Amazing work, your choice of color and composition is right on. I would have never thought that gold color could make such an amazing water color. I'm liking the Wango a lot. Great work.
hybrid 75: Your rendering is wicked, those tentacles and suction cups are right on.
these look like actual species
ImaginaryColleen: Does that thing run on gas?
Ismah: love those colors and contrast. fantastic work
EricT:I like the way you set this up, you have some cool designs and a smooth soft feel.Sabrehead Shark is my personal fav.
Luness: Wow you have a great entry. I love all the designs. your color choices are pretty unique and out there but I think thats a good thing. Awesome work all around
Ian Mack: I think you have some great ideas, and you designs have great potential. Keep at it
TMG: I would like to see some of hese ideas in color, I'm liking the parasite fish
cyborgluddite: Its nice to see some more traditional work, not too bad
Wasker: I see some cool creatures in those sketches, for some reson my adobe reader wont let me see the 52 pages :(
ryerordstar: This guy looks creepy. Seems you put a lo of work into him. I think it came out nicely
Oreg:I have seen a lot of character concepts from you, but didn't know you could bust out some sick creature designs. Love your layout
Robot Tank:thats a pretty scary creature,
prepsage:awesome creatures , I like all three
Josue: Nice work on that Ice king Bird, love you color choice . I think I like the Reef Whale the best
Darktwin:That pearl crab looks solid, nice work. I like your lighting and contrast.
Its going to take me a while to vote, so many good entries

I voted for Luness. It was almost a flip of the coin with Delmar, but I went with my first instinct. The pencil work comes through a bit in the final designs and I liked that a lot, plus your colors are really attention grabbing. I hope to have comments on everyones work up today.
Awesome stuff all around you guys!

My voting for Thalion, though, stemmed from a pretty good use of values and colors to describe specific forms/readable anatomy; pretty good attention to edges; and descriptions of what the creatures do that causes them to be at a deep sea utopia.
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _________
Corspufo- Nice presentation skills ... elaborate but dangerous ... a utopia for predators
ibbo- reads kind of like the great wall of China. (kind of abstract but not saying abstract is a bad thing)
adele- stylized and lots of attention to how it relates to human civilization. Interesting.
Tommoy- a lot of it is quite dark. If it had some light places as well you would have ever more powerful means of describing form.
yoru no megami- pretty clever attempts at realistic creatures. Some softness to a lot of edges.
arteater- Lots of effort. Between all the teeth and the typically grim colors I'm not getting that much of a utopian vibe. I know it's dark down in the sea though.
cheo 36- There are not that many different attempts in view of the relative looseness. Some people outworked you. (Some people outworked me too, so you are not alone.)
Delmar- Lots of effort and elaboration on a storyline. The digital work is of a sort that is frequently applauded here. There's a bit of a basketry look that reminds me some of lionfishes.
Hyptosis- loved the one eyed fanged copepod thing. Somehow reminded me of "Zombie Woof" by Frank Zappa and the Mothers. the outlines on these creatures and the lesser attention to describing shapes through light and shadow tend to flatten them.
Eric Elwell- You are a little bit outworked too. People with a similar degree of looseness made more individual designs than you. We are all in a great big shark tank in competitions such as DEEP and so it is always best to assume you are not working hard enough and give that little bit extra.
Pavel Sokov- Figure out which way the light is coming from, and highlight and shade accordingly. These creatures will pop more from that.
Naomi Ningishzidda- Also: Figure out which way the light is coming from, and highlight and shade accordingly. But your colors are beautiful in this competition.
Roger Adams- This is a beautiful picture but I wondered what it had to do with a utopia. Some people outworked you too. Seven weeks is a long time for one creature.
Dimagyan- I know it's hard to punch the values with pencil, but you should try anyway. I am finding that a Sanford Design Ebony pencil I have helps a lot with the darkest darks. When I really want to nail it though I use a sharpie pen (which is a little less messy than willow charcoal).
Naroken- good value contrast but not much explanation of what these creatures do or why they are associated with a utopia.
Thalion- (explained above)
Vorace- these are somewhat flattened because of not punching the values really hard. I see lots of effort at 8 pretty finished creatures.
Lege1- Lots of values but only 4 monochrome creatures and the lined paper distracts. Try harder on the presentation side of things.
MCross- 4 efforts with a pretty good balance in color/value but there are a lot of little hairy lines still showing internal to the creatures that appear to be holdover from earlier stages of the design process. I like these creatures but there is not much in the way of explanation re: why related to deep utopia.
98platinum- I know it's hard to punch the values with pencil, but you should try anyway. I am finding that a Sanford Design Ebony pencil I have helps a lot with the darkest darks. When I really want to nail it though I use a sharpie pen (which is a little less messy than willow charcoal). There are a number of efforts here but no story.
Coldrum- Interesting idea. There is just one main creature idea and the rendering is a bit loose for the amount of time available. I bet you can do better.
flashrabbit- These are cute. You should have concocted some sort of explanation about why they are hanging around the DEEP utopia. it's kind of in the instructions.
mischeviouslittleelf- The value and color thing is good here and I see some reasonable effort at explanation. the only thing I could think of was that if there was more sharpness or clarity to the whale and turtle appendages coming toward us it might have helped give more 3D look from an aquatic form of atmospheric perspective.
Saturn's Gate- What can I say? It was between you and Thalion for my vote but I thought your first two creature had some looseness about the heads and if they had cleaner work at the heads like I saw on the Wango and Mankodile you would be the only choice. I see lots of effort and lots of story.
Hybrid_75- interesting values though muted colors. There is no explanation here of how these creatures relate to the DEEP undersea utopia.
ImaginaryColleen- genetic engineered transit jellyfish. Very interesting. The darker values show the tentacle region whereas if you had specific light direction the changes of values could have shown form on both the roundness of the jellyfish body and that of the human rider. It would have helped the tentacles look more cylindrical and solid too.
Ismah- Interesting predator. How does it see prey when its head is buried in the sand? I didn't quite understand why it hangs out near the DEEP undersea utopia.
Eric T- punch the values harder. there is lots of description and the presentation is well organized. I think you should depend less on using outlines to define the form and move into light and shadow.
Luness- interesting. I wasn't sure exactly what these creatures have to do with the deep undersea utopia and there was a relative tendency toward blobbiness in the first two or three of them.
Ian Mack- These need shading. I think that would be your best next step toward improving them.
TMG- More shading, although some is there. Punch the values. I know it's hard to punch the values with pencil, but you should try anyway. I am finding that a Sanford Design Ebony pencil I have helps a lot with the darkest darks. When I really want to nail it though I use a sharpie pen (which is a little less messy than willow charcoal).
cyborgluddite- Nice draftsmanship. Pick a light direction and punch the values. For the internet you have to really exaggerate values with pastel (which is what I think this is). I saw no explanation of what these creatures are doing hanging around the DEEP undersea utopia.
Wasker- Punch values more. Nice forms so far.
Ryer Ord Star- I think a little more value contrast would help. Believe in yourself. Don't say your work is crappy while you are presenting it. Other people might disagree.
Oregano- There's a lot of detail and it's slick how you seem to have incorporated your pencil designs into this overall presentation layout. Some of the newer people could really learn presentation by studying Oregano's work in the grand overall thread they will eventually make. Internal to the pencil works I might have liked to see some darker darks such as B7-B9 or that Sanford design ebony pencil I am in love with. Scanners just don't see they way our eyes do, more's the pity.
Robot-Tank- Use value contrasts for form. Darker less saturated colors can show where shadows are falling and that will sow roundness and fins sticking out casting shadows etc. Here I mostly see mottled local color except in that really ovbvious place under the wings. (light direction in the other images?)
Prepsage- Nice forms. I'm not really sure what it has to do with an undersea utopia.
Josue- this is a nice first effort. cut down on the side scroll. the crab looked sort of humanoid (having abdominals etc.). i see lots of effort at description but it's not really very cohesive in explaining who what when where why concerning an undersea utopia. Some things were a little fuzzy here and there.
Darktwin- Interesting jellyfish effect. Shadows possibly inconsistent on octiathan. Where's the light coming from. the lighting on the pearl crab looked pretty good.
henes- Late. (tsk tsk)

My vote went to Luness, dunno it just "BANGED" a little harder then others and I really dig his style...

It was a toss up between Saturn's Gate and Hyptosis...so I went for Hyptosis with most of the votes going to Saturn's Gate at the moment. Both had a good amount of variety, colours and to the brief. I leaned towards Hyptosis more because there was some personality in the creatures that came across to me in the drawings...and they seemed like they would be a great community in a game for Nintendo or something :D
Well done everyone, now lets all cut off our legs, sew on some fish tails and swim to the bottom of the deep blue!
Corsupufo: When I went to upload mine after your entry I saw your Sea Cow and thought, thats awesome! Your creatures look like they could be from a book like that Kong Island Life book Weta published, just awesome, well done! Looks pro to me.
cheo36: I saw these entries in the Environment one or the Character one too...nice stuff but I think your entries in the other category are much stronger.
Yoru no Megmi: I like the Blue Trumpet
Arteater: Awesome amount of fish sketches...and the huge whale eating the hump backs is creepy!
Hyptosis: Great colours, shapes and variety...I really like your approach...a bit more toonish like mine. They would make a brilliant ecosystem for a game environment. I really like the little creature with the spike on the snout...so far, yours is my favourite as I write this!
EricElwell: I would of loved to of seen more! The ideas are cool, I dig the Plaetrix painting, its sooooo cool and a great idea! Nice application of colours.
Roger Adams: It looks lovely, nice painting and atmosphere. Looks like it would exist. Welcome and well done!
Naroken: Great sketches!
Thalio and Vorace: I like them, especially the Ablabara and Snortra Fish...nice work of the final five.
Saturns Gate: They are brilliant dude! Love the presentation and the Ooomus' way of harvesting small fish! ooooh, a toss up between you and another!
Luness: These colours you have done on the fish are really eye catching and imaginative concepts. I like the 'shell' like form on one of them...would be great if some of these were real!
Mischeviouslittleelf: Great atmosphere in the deep, this kind of crosses over to the character one too though...have you entered both?

What an awesome competition this has been, congrats to all who participated. It was a tough choice, but my vote went to Saturns_Gate for a number of reasons (i.e. volume of work, presentation, origional designs, fantastic concepts, etc...). However, i would like to offer an honourable mention to Corspufo, Delmar, Thalion, Vorace, Luness, and Hybrid-75. Great work everyone!
[Edit] And thanks to everyone for the crit's they gave for my design - They are much appreciated!

Vorace, Thalion, Saturns Gate
These are my favs for this event.
I think in this poll we see the problems which occure, when the briefing is not exact enough. Actually i think all 3 artists have great ideas and designs. Also the execution is very strong.
But the problem is, the different amount of creatures. I love all creatures of Thalion for example. Saturns Gate made more, but not all of them are on the same level, at least regarding the design, which is one of the most important factors in my eyes. Vorace also has strong creature designs, again 1-2 are not that good.
I think with a preset rule for the amount of creatures, we would have a better base for judging.
So, i won't vote for now, maybe i won't do at all, but currently it's too hard to decide between this 3.
I also like adeles entry, but unfortunately the presentation wasn't strong enough and also diversity is lacking. But still my runner-up to the top 3.
Thanx for the great effort to all, the next COW will start the next days...a short break won't do any harm to us, eh? ;)

Awesome work, especially from the following: Adele, Arteater, Delmar, Dimagyan, Naroken, Coldrum, Hybrid75, TMG. Naroken, I *love* those sketches; is that a brush pen, a chisel-tip marker, or what?
(BTW, I didn't enter COW because I set my story on earth, and therefore didn't make up any new sea creatures)

Thalion.
The layout etc etc. reminds me of a National Geographic. The creatures look believable, like I could just reach out and touch them.
Lastly, the topic is "Utopia" ie, paradise, so when I look at the creatures I really want to think happy thoughts. A lot of what is posted looks scary and I feel like a potential meal, but these little creatures just look so lovable and cuddly. :) I could really see them swimming around in paradise.

I have no earthly idea how I am going to vote. Seriously, I wish we could vote for more than one. I really don't know how I'm going to narrow it down. I do know that I was really leaning towards the ones with just plain MORE work. I guess I appreciate effort as well as technical rendering skill :)
Here is a list of the ones that really caught my eye.
corspufo: incredible descriptions, very well thought out.
arteater: love the intro pic, lovely. realistic, believable creature design. LOVE the toothy leviathan whale/shark thingymabob.
hyptosis: love the style you render in. believable creatures and those Drakes are very full of win. Love all the different styles of them. A lot!
roger adams: Yo, I watch your blog (Lizzie) ;) lovely concept and very believable, love the jaw.
vorace: lovely rendering and interesting creature design.
coldrum: COOLEST SEA TURTLE EVER!
mischeviouslittleelf: I wish there was more, because what you have is so good!
saturnsgate: some of the creatures I actually thought didn't make a lot of sense, but only a couple of them. they got better and more believable the further down I went ;) They are rendered EXTREMELY well, beautiful. I LOVE THE WANGO the most of any. The biggest part for me was the wealth of effort done here.
hybrid75: beautiful rendering, wish there was more!
erict: love the book style design, reminded me of the Time Life books when I was a kid :) ZOMG! Your bearded Turtle: It's Lapras! Gotta catch em all!
luness: awesome concept, very good storytelling. I got an eerie feeling while reading your entry, like I was imagining being down there, discovering this myself. Very cool and /great/ creatures!
I ran out of paper for the crits I was writing down, so I apologize to everyone after luness!!

It was a bit of a toss up between delmar and saturns gate, but in the end my eyes kept getting pulled back to Saturn's stuff, so that's how I voted. More of a gut thing than anything specific. Nice work everyone. Its a lot of effort to do these big projects and everyone should be proud they devoted the time and effort.
Looking forward to the next COW...

Only one vote allowed huh... well my vote went to Saturns Gate
If I was able to vote for more than 1.. my other votes would have gone to.. corspufo, Delmar, Vorace, adele, Hybrid_75 and of course luness
Thanks for the feedback on mine... My entry was pretty half baked... I started off sketching with grand ideas but just had no time to spare for it... so yeah I could have done better. But what I did was fun : D
Good luck everyone although I thinks Mr Saturn may have this round ; )

Thalion: You get my vote, for staying on topic, presentation, well done rendering. I would have liked to have seen more creatures out of you, but still it was to me the most "utopian-based" entry that offered unique concepts rendered in a way that they were easy to understand. I just wish others saw the same!
Saturns Gate: I feel you put the most presentation & commitment into your pieces, yet some of the illustrations were a bit too aggressively designed in my opinion. You have definitely put your name into my mind as being a great creature creator though :)
luness, sadly i didn't vote for you, even though i think you had the best visual presentation of a lot of your creatures, but there wasn't "utopia" benefits to really any of the creatures besides food. I also thought some where a little too predatory to fit within the "Utopian world"
arteater, i couldn't vote for yours either because of the predatory factor, but i also thought your thumbnails didn't offer much creativity to the table, Yes you figured out different species of fish but most didn't offer anything new to the table, If this was for a game the benefits of creating a creature nearly similar to an actual fish is void when using an actual relatable fish would ground the world better.
Delmar, i really wish i could have seen more! you were bordering on getting my vote. Also 1 out 4 of the flushed out creatures seemed a bit too aggressive.

Hello hello!
First of all, thank you so much for the comments, observations, and kind words about my final post.
I wanted to get a realistic looking render, and even though I’m still learning and that there are some flaws here an there, I’m very happy with the results and I’ll keep working on my weak points to get better. It has been a great experience to participate in DEEP.
So, I’m back from a short trip I had to make. I had a chance to vote but couldn’t make any comment about why I voted for that group of concepts, etc. Now I have some time to do so.
My final vote went to Delmar. You can find variety of shapes, textures and colors in just few pieces, all done in beautiful colors and eye-catching technique. Your pieces were my favorites since the conceptualization until the final post. Professional quality, in my humble opinion. Congratulations!!!
My other favorites, whether for technique or amount of cool interesting work (regardless the technique), or just overall greatness were:
corspufo – very creative work and great presentation
Vorace – some awesome designs, and I really like the tiny sketches on the right side of the panels
Coldrum – just one design, but a very good one. Those quick roughs are so neat!
flashrabbit – cuteness to the max. I can see this on a children’s book I would buy for my two lovely nieces without any doubt.
Saturns Gate – very creative stuff. Nice presentation and overall greatness. One of my top favorites.
Hybrid_75 – Another top favorite. Great concepts, I would have loved to see more work.
ImaginaryColleen – haha, genius. These Upside Down Jellyfish would take you anywhere and anytime, kinda slowly, yes, but in a very original way.
RyerOrdStar – you say “my crappy contribution” but I believe it’s a great one instead!!! The cross-hatching for this really cool design is incredible and shows volume, transparency and depth. I just imagine how far you could have gone with several pieces like this one. Good work.
Oregano – great pieces although kinda small to appreciate some of the details you put on them. I love the mosaic to death, so AWESOME!
Josue – Another top favorite. They look like from prehistoric times, simply awesome.
Anyways, hope to see you all and many more in any of the next challenges and contests that surely will come, right here on CA.
Thanks a lot to Fozzybar, Davi and everyone else involved in the conceptualization of DEEP. Well done guys!
Cheers!

July 4th, 2008, 11:38 AM
They were all really great pieces but what Davi said rings true for me, I guess...I didn't vote for a lot of you because the creatures were too aggressive, and even Saturn's Gate stuck an ugly monster in there, I mean guys take it easy...not everything has to eat you...
Anyways Hybrid's designs were simply the coolest, the only reason i didn't vote was the lack of color. And my favorite of Saturn's gate was definately the worm thing with the stripes...
Luness, same reason, couldn't vote greyscale only, but the designs were beautifully rendered and I still can't see the Utopia in them, but I can't be too picky about the render. :)

Thanks again for the crits and comments guys. :)
Im going to veer away from creatures and get back to some stuff im not as familiar with. I agree with ya Noami, creating something cute and believable is so hard, especially for us who are used to drawing ugly mothers like most of us here. Im inclined to try some cuteness actually... right after I finish this manly steak of course. Yum.
I dont normally vote for just gray scale drawings, but the professionalism of Luness's characters blew me away. You can just tell by the flow of the line and design when someone knows his stuff, and imo he does. Really is overwelming how much artwork has gone into this. Cant wait for the next activity. :)

Well, how about something ugly and vicious that wants to have sex with me, that I can agree with...
Consensual sex...
(I suddenly had visions of you little bastards linking me to the anal parasite topic from last year)
I think the activity leaders should torture ya'll with a round of activities with "cute and harmless" in the brief...

Well, heres those crits and comments for you all. Enjoy...
on a side note, I passed my university course! Woohoo! :)
(my brain was fried at some points, sorry about that!) :D
corspufo: really liked your rendering and overall presentation. I think the background could have helped the creatures pop out more with there saturated colors by darkening it a bit. You was a close call for getting my vote. Well done. :)
attorney: It could have helped I think to use less bright colors and maybe shaded them from the brightest white to the darkest dark. Though saying that it would have been a nightmare using those tools.
ibbo: I think you could have done something quite different with your submission if you added more work. I can sort of sense a surreal style coming through. Though to me he does not really feel underwater.
adele: I admire the amount of work you put into this and also the rough and ready style which a lot of us missed, including me. You was one of the ones up there on my voting list though it was down to personal taste of the cartoony style which does not do it for me.
Tommoy: I like your rendering on the first and last image, nicely detailed though it is a bit too dark for me to make out properly. I think if you added some more work and brightened up the images a bit more it would have boosted you up. :)
Yoru no Megami: The amount of work youve done is cool, but a lot of the designs imo are a bit too down to earth for me. Again, great effort. :)
Arteater: ahhh Arteater, you was really high on my voting list. the rendering on your paintings is great! and the amount of work youve done is awesome! The only things that put me off voting for you is that a lot of your thumbs are a bit too similar to normal sorts of fish and the big paintings are a bit too saturated. Great work overall though. Good job! :)
cheo36: I like ya presentation and thumbnail designs. If you did more work for this one it would have been high up there on my voting list for sure. :)
Delmar: As I said before, your shapes and designs for your creatures are amazing. That coupled with your fine rendering skills made me give you the vote with ease. Your looseness but precision detail add up to a big wow from me. AMAZING JOB! :)
Hyptosis: Great job man, love the style even though its cartoony in ways it appeals to me. Some of those designs are soo wacky man, awesome. :) My girlfriend LOVED your Diamus Sea Reaver. Good job, great amount of work.
EricElwell: Excellent style! and the rendering on the painting is spot on! Wish you did more. Keep up the good work man. :)
Pavel Sokov: I like the concepts though I think some color would have livened them up a bit. Nice amount of work. :)
Naomi Ningishzidda: You made a nice effort for this, I think your strongest point is your bravery with colors. The second from last creature looks really pretty and cool, they definently look a lot nicer then most of our designs! I think you should try starting off subtle with the saturated colors and then adding more bit by bit to build up. I can see you making some wildly colorful creatures soon, keep it up. :)
Roger Adams: Lovely rendering. :) If you gave in 6 more to this quality it would have been awesome.
DIMAGYAN: Some cool concepts, though a lot feel a bit too down to earth for me. Some color could have made them more appealing I think. Keep it up! :)
naroken: Some cool designs, I like how you got the flow to them. Kudos for using traditional! :)
Thalion: Awesome concepts! Rendering is great too I just wish there was more. Love that eye on the shell, sick. :)
Vorace: So close to getting my vote! Presentation is way up there, love how you left the sketchy idealization to the right of the main image. The Hoenir Orca is so fucking cool. :D Creature designs overall are great, I cant really fault it. Great effort!! :)
Lege1: Cool designs, though some of there anatomy seems a bit blobby in places. Would have liked to seen more! :)
MCross: I think the designs are a bit too familiar to our own creatures of this world. Cool descriptions but I would have wanted to see some more from you.
98platinum: Great pencil work, cool designs but again, would have wanted to see some more from you.
coldrum: Man that turtle is so cool! :) So would have wanted to see more! Great work!
flashrabbit: Nice painting! :) I like the little dude in the left hand corner, the blow up fish. Want to see more.
Mischeviouslittleelf: Good rendering and color, though some of the designs are a bit too humanoid for me. I know I keep saying it but, I want to see more. :)
Saturns Gate: What a dick.
Hybrid_75: Love the rendering, fuck! Those are some evil mothers! Definently would have gotten high up on the voting list if there was more. Good work man! :)
ImaginaryColleen: ha! Thats pretty funny, I could imagine him bouncing along on that thing. Want more! :)
Ismah: I like the rendering and how you explained how they work on the panel to the right, only thing letting it down is the volume of work.
EricT: Nice colors, and cartoony style. Though just not my taste.
luness: You was high up there on the voting list too, like the presentation and love some of your rendering and colors. You was my girlfriends favorite, she cant resist that shell like color you used. Good work! :)
Ian Mack: Its good that you did blueprints, I dont think many or any of us actually did that. The thing letting them down is the rendering and lack of color, which will come naturally the more you draw. keep it up. :)
TMG: Some of your designs are really cool, and i love that second image showing those poor divers getting eaten, lovely. :) With some color and some more practice in general you should be pumping out some cool stuff. :)
cyborgluddite: Is that chalk? If so then hats off to you, that stuff is hard to get used to. Would have liked to see some more though. :)
Wasker: Loooovely pencil sketches. Wish there was more man! Good stuff. :)
RyerOrdStar: Thats actually pretty damn cool, like the rendering style but again, need more, and some color. :)
Oregano: Design work top notch, layout is great too! Rendering is clean and pristine. Cant fault it man, you was up there on the voting list.
ROBOT_TANK: Some of the designs look a bit flat, but most of the rendering is quite good. Colors are cool too, its just that flatness that bothers me in a couple of them. My girlfriend loved your first and last creature. Keep it up man.
prepsage: Great rendering skills, though a bit too down to earth design wise and could do with some color. Keep up the good work.
Josue: Really cool design work! Nice clean layout and colors are pretty good too. Cant really fault it, just keep doing what your doing and improving. :)
Darktwin: Love the rendering on these, but would have liked to see more. Keep it up man! :)

Tough call, but I voted for luness. They seemed really interesting, and some have a really good rendering that made the animals seem sorta squishy and real.
corspufo I thought it was well drawn. Love the notes. Some are very clever.
Adele They have an animated sort of look (from me, that's not a bad thing), rather expressive, especially the isopod.
Delmar I just thought they were rather solid designs.
Hyptosis I really like Paua'nu. Also, the subtle and drastic differences between regular and affected sealife. Really like the sea dragon-ish ocean drake design.
98platinum Love the ones on the right best.

Wow, alot of votes for entries that didn't really follow the brief... Deep being about something else but the shallow waters :/
Was picking between three to vote for:
Vorace- Kickass rendering.
Saturns Gate- same as above
Ismah- stood out from the crowd and got my vote!
Find it interesting that COW have single-vote-poll and CHOW doesnt...personally I find it better with single-vote polls..

Thanks SC !... thought it was totally hopeless :^^;: ...
I voted for Hybrid 75, cool faces designs and rendering (unfortunately unfinished i think ) and creepy "face hugger" concept...
Thanks to all those who left comments...

It was hard to choose between all this great work!
Delmar wins my vote. Aside from your ideas of plasma and how it played a significant function in the ecosystem, I personally think that yours had the most functional, slick, and professional presentation than all other entries. The color palette you used for all your images made the most sense, and really communicated an otherworldliness and mystery to the viewer. You also submitted very early in the thread, which I think was a smart thing to do given the amount of entries.
Saturns Gate you're a really close 2nd in my book, I really liked your ideas as well. The size comparisons and alternate angles, those were very nice! But anything that distracts from the image and what you're trying to present, I think is a hinderance. The ornate border stopped working after a few images, and I thought the color palette was very "punchy" and conveyed "hawaii scuba" more than DEEP.
luness> I think you really nailed the kind of lighting that happens when creatures are photographed underwater. Really beautiful images, but I didn't see anything explaining their function or how they evolved etc etc.
adele> Love the style. I would still like to see this as an animation of some sorts. You've got some good stuff!
Mischieviouslittleelf> Good stuff. Definitely a 3rd place contender! Good ideas and some good polish.
Vorace> Props for entering more than 3 categories my friend. I think you may have bitten off more than you could chew, however, some images seem unpolished and hurried.
Oregano> Moar! MOaaaar! :P
To everyone else, the fact that you entered this thing makes you mighty! Really great job! (Root)Beers all around! :vodkamachine:

Vorace - nice presentation. Really big variety of species... I like it!:D

Thanks to all the playboys that commented on my Cow pieces, especially to the guy or girl that voted for me, whoever that is!
I myself voted for Saturn's Gate, there were many close seconds though, but Saturn Gate's work was the most vibrant of my fav. Very unique designs, that are fairly different from each other, in both modeling and in colors. Great work !!

I voted for luness. For his sophisticated way of painting. Which is very impeccable.
Saturns gate-has quantity and quality. Which make him untouchable
Delmar-has a liveness to his line which I really enjoy.

voted for luness entry. i liked the presentation and the type of creatures. the underwater photograph feel is a nice detail.
very good entries indeed, it was a hard call to vote.
Arteater :thanks for your comment, i like the sealupus too but is one of the discarded concepts in my entry(the type of deep world i was thinking later, was a very low oxygen, very dense and cold environment...)
arttorney:thanks for the advice
RogerAdams:thanks for your comment, much apreciatted.
mickeymao: thanks
Saturns Gate;thanks for the feedback. yes i try to make the concepts related to earth, because the world i was working was the deep sea in the earth planet, trying to think in creatures related to some existing creatures...i didn't put too much information in my entry, and didn't make to much sketches or colour studies to explore others posibilities.i guess that limited the diversity of my creatures. i see what you mean. thanks
when i have more time i would make some comments
cheers

ah... Just returning from a long week working at the Bible camp. So.. sorry if this is a bit late.
I really like Saturn's Gate's entry. Just really solid stuff! Great use of color, great variety of interesting designs, most of which fit very well with the theme (maybe not the toothed fellow so much, though he is still cool! :) ). Are the fish inside the sack screaming? :)
I also like Thallion's work, very sharp, great colors, I love playful/light-hearted creatures and characters.. though the designs and the variety of designs were not as interesting to me personally. The two on the left are a lot of fun, but the more crustacean creatures are less interesting.
Delmar's work is great! Excellent variety, excellent use of colors and values, the style is very alive and interesting! It was a hard choice between your work and Saturn's Gate. What it comes down to for me is the fact that all of your designs had glowing or florescent qualities (I would have liked to have seen some variance between the designs, not all using the same or similar qualities), rendering style (though I like your style very much, it lacked the same amount of clarity), and just the variety of work. You did an awesome job on variety, and I think you may have been better in terms of the creatures' place in the DEEP Utopian universe, SG simply pumped out more and kept them varying.
Luness, I like the variety in your work, I also like the color and the designs. but I think the rendering (black blacks and white whites) and the lack of dynamic posing is really hurting your work.

First of all i wanna thank everyone who participated in this contest for motivating me to geat my ass into gear and some work done. i'm getting a little sentimental here, but i think i can't say it often enough, that these contests and the whole ca community are the reason why I and i guess all of us have grown as artists and reached a higher level. Therefore i wanna say a big thanks to everyone involved on this site... :yayca: .......
I voted days ago but i had to work the last 3 days so i wasn't able to wright a comment.
Saturn's Gate : You've got my vote. Quality stuff and furthermore a big variety of well developed creatures, greatly rendered....everything combined in a top presentation....Yours had to be my choice....Congratulations bro!!!
Luness: I fell in love with your pencils since i first saw your SB...Now we can see some colored stuff too. It's great, Your creatures convey an extreme deep underwater feeling. In the end for me it was just the background story that was missing.....Great stuff!!
Corspufo ...Great stuff! Good variety of creatures and great presentation. My only crit would be that the creatures where too familiar. The deepsea aspect missed out a bit.
I hope i can get up some more comments soon.
Cheers
Andi
