i've been watching "When We Left Earth" [sweet declassified NASA footage in there],
saw "distance", "construction", "mech", and immediately started painting on this photo
i took a couple of months back. i'd love to finish it with better kids/more painting.

Many kids dream of piloting one of those fabled construction mechs.. Unfortanly learning to pilot such a incredibly advanced machine takes half a lifetime of rigourous vr excersises and dedication. The multibillion dollar companys that own the handful of mechs that exists, adopts orphaned children at young ages to become future pilots.
I'l probably work on this a bit more tomorrow.

The city had planned to raze the bombed-out downtown and use it as a landfill for its ever-growing pollution waste. That is, until a private contractor revealed its powerful construction mechs, giant vehicles that allowed a group of five people to build or rebuild a skyscraper in a matter of hours. With the new mechs, the city was able to completely refurbish the war zone and create a thriving metropolis, all in less than a month.
A group of street urchins look curiously onward as the mechs repair the damaged Central Quarter.

Don't you love how one 2 letter word changes the conception of the drawing?

As one suggested, I did it in black and white to see values first and colored it afterward (not my favorite method, but I thought I'd give it a try, different approaches can be good for practicing!)...
One bad side is that I still use dark values weakily. Moving one arrow in level for dark value until I got to the darkest value I had so that it gets full range of values. Somehow, I don't use full range of dark values because I was afraid it'd be too dark. Any tips? I like how it turned out in this one, but what about daytime? What about one with high white exposure? I don't see any dark values there hence there's no full ranged values...
Are there any exceptions in this?
Anyways here it is.. about 1 hour sketch

I guess it all depends on your choice of lighting, position and intensity. On a bright day with the sun lower in the sky, you will have long, dark shadows. But if the sun is shining from behind you\the camera, you won't see as much shadow, so less dark values. You don't necessarily have to use a full range of values in every piece, but usually there are some small spots where you can throw in that real dark black or grey.
Like if you look at Gorgoleon's image, it's backlit, so the shadows fall towards the viewer, darkening everything up. Try painting shadows first, then adding highlights and midtones last, instead of vice versa, see if that helps any.

Hell, i didnt post a DSG for a few month, but now i am back in action again ;P
@Silentbrain: the second ink i so cool!
@terp: i love the feeling of it.
@DM7: nice....... damn nice...... i only wish to see more of the children, they look a bit lubricated.
<i want to Draw a dramatic Szene, my idea was to show the stunning moment when the Mech crushes everything they ever got.
And they know, there will be no return>

Zakarra: Thank you for the tip! It's pretty much of what I already know, except that small spots one.... I think it's more of contrast issue I have. I can't seem to blend all completely so that it achieves a realism feeling. It looks like more practice is my only solution for now. Someday, I'll have this cracked. Trust me! *determined*
TheBreast, I even remember you! I also wasn't here for few months... nice to see you back again and nice painting! Try to add some fire or something to add the dramatic feeling you wanted to express. Use saturation and contrast to your power in this one! Then, I think it would definitely be a winner! Furthermore, The attachment in here is not allowed, but feel free to use photobucket, imagesack, or whatever to host your image in here :)
DeuceRok: Oh this evil two-lettered word! Well done on this one. I actually like the lineart style with this one.. it feels a little trippy, dreamy, and fluidic just like a movie I loved! It's called, "Waking Life". Have you seen it before? :D Almost same style, me thinks!
And to everybody else, love it! :D It's fun to see how much ideas can come out of a specific topic! Way to go!:sungod:

Arteater- beautiful work. The mech is astounding, as are the clouds. There is a real strong sense of action here.
Gorgoleon - I like the second image, the really yellow one. Lots of action here too.
Great work everybody!

Silentbrain: I'd love to see your method on this. I love the fact that it looks drawn IRL. The amount of detail is tight, too. Length of time?
TheBeast: Love the concept of this. It's a little skewed on the perspective. I think your concept creating a tense and helpless scene would be enhanced by correcting the perspective. Can I just say that I love the background?! The mech is very menacing!!
Phix: Tight mech, but I hate the water. (Quick edit: the texture doesn't do the rest of the pic justice) Remember that the texture also needs to keep the perspective. I recommend creating a new brush. Great work, though overall!!

Well, here's a 1 hour quickie I decided to try. Still not very keen on mechs,
but I did my best.

Spent about 15 minutes on this one using the GIMP. I like the outline, though I think the red highlights from the red sun needed to be more transparent and ended up looking to much like blood after I looked at it on Photobucket... I'll have to come back to this one!

DeuceRok- Hey thanks. Actually it is drawn IRL though, pencil on paper with colours in PS. I don't know how long it took, a little bit here, a little bit there, maybe 4-5 hours...
klortho- nice ink-ish style!
zakarra- nice concept, kinda reminds me of those japanese self-building skyscrapers...which I tried to find ref of, but couldn't, so maybe they were a figment of my imagination...
dm7- lovely colors...and of course I have a weak spot for flying machines...

Hey. First post on this site i fink!
my idea is to show the child looking up at the assembly structure and the shadows of beams, etc. making patterns on her face. It took me about an hour. And I decided to dodge and burn the hell out of it... because it looked crap without it. IMAGE LINK (http://echosilver.deviantart.com/art/dsg-1376-90091634)

bbwolf - I really like those buildings, but I don't know how to create things in speedpaints with such straight lines, you know things that look more real and less sketchy. How exactly did you create those backgrounds?
bbwolf
June 30th, 2008, 04:41 AM
I created about four custom brushes with the marquee tool. Set the spacing higher, about 200%, disabled stroke, made straight lines with shift held down and then used the transform tool to align with my perspective grid I had on an overlay layer. Hope that helps.
